An Extension Of Mcguire's Inoculation Theory T8 Controversial Topics, Michele S. Roberts

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extension of McGuire's inoculation theory to controversial topics. It was assumed that the employment of controversial topics would reverse the conditions described as obtaining with the employment of cultural truisms. McGuire's first study on the inoculation theory was used as a paradigm, and three hypotheses were investigated: Hypothesis One: A supportive treatment will be superior to a refutational treatment in conferring resistance to persuasion. Hypothesis Two: An active participation in developing defenses will increase the amount of immunity conferred. Hypothesis Three: There is an interactive effect between the type of defense …

The Interior Lighting Design Process, Bruce Anthony Cutler Jul 1977

The Interior Lighting Design Process, Bruce Anthony Cutler

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Interior lighting is one facet of architectural design which deserves attention. Practically all activities for which a building is designed require illumination. Lighting is used also as an aid for expressing those architectural forms designed by the architect. Therefore, the architect should be provided with recommendations on how to proceed with an interior lighting design process. Such guidelines are helpful in aiding the architect to furnish an overall lighting design concept. Many technical procedures are refined by a consulting electrical engineer. The basic areas of the lighting design process which the architect should consider are: illumination for task performance, the …

Design Recommendations For Environmental Control In Greenhouses, George E. Montgomery Jr. Jun 1977

Design Recommendations For Environmental Control In Greenhouses, George E. Montgomery Jr.

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Architecture, in one of its more basic attributes, may be defined as man's attempts to create a differential barrier between the spaces set aside for certain specific functions and the untempered environment. In the design of this barrier, passage to and from the protected space would be allowed to certain elements of the environment, while other factors would be either retained or excluded. While these efforts were directed toward providing differential barriers between himself and his environment, man carried a useful set of gauges for the determination of the adequacy of the barriers within his own senses. When he was …

Renovation As A Partial Solution To Housing Problems In Old Quito, Ecuador, Oswaldo Cesar MiñO May 1977

Renovation As A Partial Solution To Housing Problems In Old Quito, Ecuador, Oswaldo Cesar MiñO

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Quito has no distinct marginal belt, or barrio, section within the city. Rather, there are tugurios (or poor) living throughout the city, with higher concentrations in the historical city center of Quito. This historical center is rich in culture and history, as seen especially in its attractive colonial-style buildings. However, these buildings are being neglected at present and are losing their charm and historical value because they belong to the tugurio. The author feels it is important to preserve the historical relevance and charm of the old city center and at the same time provide adequate housing for those in …

Living Museum Environment: A Program For Architectural Design, Terrance J. Cisco

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Museums are a social sanctuary containing images of man's past, present and future. The task of collecting, conserving and exhibiting artifacts is the primary function of a museum. The artifacts will then be inherited by future generations so that they, too, may understand their place in the scheme of social evolution. The interpretation of the requirements of a physical plant for a museum and the creation of a unique design, which will enhance the life and experience of the visitor, is the subject of this thesis.

Museums depend upon good administration, adequate funding, well-engineered exhibit design and a sympathetic physical …

The Legal Implications Of Solar Rights Resulting From The Use Of Solar Energy Systems, Felix A. Rodriguez

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The problem treated in this paper is the simple act of one neighbor shading another neighbor's solar energy system. Such systems are capital intensive and a homeowner will invest a significant sum of money in solar collectors. What can the homeowner do? If solar heating and cooling is to be widely used, legislative bodies will have to address the problems that will arise from serious collector shading in our urban areas. At least three pertinent questions arise from this problem. 1) Does the homeowner have a right to the sunshine that is blocked by his neighbor's building or tree? 2) …
