A Proposed Analysis Of Planning Factors Within The Interpretive Planning Process, Christopher W. Sands May 1994

A Proposed Analysis Of Planning Factors Within The Interpretive Planning Process, Christopher W. Sands

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Every year, millions of people visit parks and preserves and in the process, learn about the natural and cultural resources of these areas. These resources typically include, but are not limited to, unique features of geology, hydrology, wildlife, vegetation, and historical and prehistorical influences. Many of these resources may be fragile, which is often the reason for park or preserve establishment, and therefore vulnerable to the impacts created through uncontrolled visitor use. If these resources are not protected from improper recreational use, the activities have the potential to influence the species composition and diversity of vegetation, soil properties and stability …

Sensitivity Analysis In Energy Responsive Design, Bratati Biswas Jan 1994

Sensitivity Analysis In Energy Responsive Design, Bratati Biswas

Theses

Energy responsive design involves the conscious use of climatic elements and natural processes in the design of spaces. Buildings are designed to react favorably with the environment to produce balanced comfort conditions. Passive solar building design utilizes this concept to heat or cool a building by natural means. In this approach, building components and materials are articulated to make maximum use of solar radiation and climatic elements producing energy responsive spaces.

The purpose of this research is to help designers to design with energy in mind. Energy related decisions are required during conceptual design and is not an add-on item …

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the housing characteristics and the determinants of housing production of the informal housing sector in Alexandria, Egypt. It also examines the impact of land policies on the development of the informal housing sector. Informal housing, by definition, is constructed and acquired outside the legal procedure of land and building registration and without the necessary permissions and approvals. Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present investigation examined the current water demand characteristics and the future water demand of Cache Valley, Utah for the time period of 1990-2010. The demand attributable to agriculture and seven nonagricultural economics sectors was determined and forecasts were performed based on those demand values.

Linear regression, extrapolation, and alternative futures forecasting methods were applied and the various results compared against each other. Three different scenarios were calculated for residential demand to represent different sources and composition of demand information. It was determined that consideration of water demand data excluding Logan City provided the best statistical description of water demand. …

Networking High-End Cad Systems Based On Pc/Ms-Dos Platforms, Dagmar Antje Brinkmann Jan 1993

Networking High-End Cad Systems Based On Pc/Ms-Dos Platforms, Dagmar Antje Brinkmann

Theses

The concept of today's technology has been dropped. Everything is now either oobsolete or experimental. Yesterday's technology is appealing only because it is tried-and-true and prices are reduced for clearance. Tomorrow's technology is exciting, somewhat expensive and not well tested.

In the field of architecture, where most firms are medium or small, having limited resources, the high cost initially required for a CAD installation was generally impossible to meet not too many years ago.

From spreadsheets and CAD graphics to network file systems and distributed database management, the basic systems and application tools have matured to the point that the …

Urban Regimes And Downtown Planning In Portland, Oregon And Seattle, Washington, 1972-1992, Mark Richard Bello Jan 1993

Urban Regimes And Downtown Planning In Portland, Oregon And Seattle, Washington, 1972-1992, Mark Richard Bello

Dissertations and Theses

Portland and Seattle are often considered to be divergent in character, partly because civic leadership in each city has a different vision. The adoption of contrasting downtown core plans, projects, and policies in each city allows us an opportunity to understand the nature of each city's regime. As defined by Elkin, an urban regime is the community's governing coalition, those who exercise public authority in a legal sense and those private actors able to act collectively and bring concerted influence to bear.

The time frame for this study begins with the first modern planning document, the 1972 City of Portland …

Known phenomenal techniques found in the psychology of perception are combined with the architectural design of five non-classroom art environments in which children experience and understand visual arts. The art environments are: (1) Land Marks, (2) Art Marks, (3) Color Connections, (4) Art Openings, and (5) Art Amplitude. Drawing from research conducted on cognitive learning theory and information gathered from site visit interviews, cognitive learning concepts were incorporated into the design of the art environments. Five categories of perceptual phenomenon were used as the bases for the architectural design of a visual arts center for children. The categories are: (1) …

The Poetic Streetscape, Joan Wegman Profeta May 1992

The Poetic Streetscape, Joan Wegman Profeta

Theses

Suburbia continues to consume more and more of the rural countryside, replacing the vistas of open fields and farmsteads with prolific road patterns and individualized residential structures. As the new growth continues, the local character disappears. In addition, the new development, with the exception of some individualized works, offers little in aesthetic replacement value. In response, the following work develops a Country Theory for aesthetic building in rural areas. As suburban growth revolves around streets, the theory is built around streetscape. What is streetscape, and in particular, what should it be when building streetscape in the country?

The discussion begins …

Geographic Data In City Planning Departments: The Volume And Use Related To Advancements In Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Technology, Fawzi Saeed Kubbara

Dissertations and Theses

Many local planning departments have acquired and put into use advanced automated geocoding and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to store, process, map and analyze geographic data. GIS technological advancements in hardware, software, and geographic databases - specifically, in geocoding methods to reference street address data to geographic locations - enable data to be integrated, mapped, and analyzed more efficiently and effectively. Also, technological advancements depend on organizational and institutional environments. The relationships between technological advancements and technical (data mapping and analysis), organizational, and institutional environments are not clear. The purpose of this study is to explain these relationships to help …

State Industrial Policy And The Autonomy Of State Leaders: Evidence From The Oregon Experience, Matthew I. Slavin Jan 1992

State Industrial Policy And The Autonomy Of State Leaders: Evidence From The Oregon Experience, Matthew I. Slavin

Dissertations and Theses

This research identifies variables that determined the amount of autonomy Oregon's gubernatorial leadership possessed in formulating and implementing the Regional Strategies program, centerpiece of industrial policy in Oregon during the latter half of the 1980s. The literature on state industrial policy points to instances in which the leaders of America's state governments are acting autonomously. Gubernatorial actors appear to be formulating industrial policy goals independent of powerful non-state groups and other state actors and developing the capacity to transform their policy preferences into authoritative actions. The literature is largely devoid, however, of any systematic accounting of the variables that determine …
