Length-Thermal Stress Relations For Composite Bridges, Jack H. Emanuel, Charles M. Taylor Jan 1985

Length-Thermal Stress Relations For Composite Bridges, Jack H. Emanuel, Charles M. Taylor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer-assisted analysis was used to study the relation among uniform, linear, and nonlinear stress components thermally induced in a composite bridge section for hypothetical parameters of varying span lengths, number of spans, and support conditions, as well as for actual bridges. The results were verified by conventional methods of analysis. The following was concluded for prismatic (constant) sections: (1) For constant proportionality of span lengths, each of the three thermal stress components is independent of span length; (2) variation of the proportionality of span lengths affects only the linear stress component; (3) support reactions and deflections caused by thermal loading …

Control Of Insect Pests In Recent Mammal Collections, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways, D. A. Schlitter Jan 1985

Control Of Insect Pests In Recent Mammal Collections, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways, D. A. Schlitter

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A review is made of numerous insecticides to determine their suitability for use in Recent mammal collections. Factors determining their value were based on human safety, ability to protect specimens without adverse effects, and other considerations. The more favorable insecticides to use in mammal collections include Dowfume 75, sulfuryl fluoride. dimethyldiclorovinyl phosphate, paradichlorobenzene, carbon dioxide, and naphthalene. Insecticides that are considered less favor able because of many limitations included aldrin, dieldrin, arsenic, borax, mitin, ethylene oxide, methoxychlor, methyl bromide, and pyrethrum. There are some insecticides that should never be used because of extreme health and/or fire hazards. These include carbon …

Biofilm Growths With Sucrose As Substrate, Ju-Chang Huang, Shoou Yuh Chang, Yow Chyun Liu, Zhanpeng Jiang Jan 1985

Biofilm Growths With Sucrose As Substrate, Ju-Chang Huang, Shoou Yuh Chang, Yow Chyun Liu, Zhanpeng Jiang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study was conducted to: (1) Evaluate the effect of DO on cell yield in a fixed film reactor using 1,000 mg/L sucrose as a substrate; (2) evaluate the correlations of the biofilm thickness and density with DO and their resultant substrate stabilization rates; and (3) examine the response of biofilm communities as a result of DO and biofilm thickness changes. Data obtained from this study indicate that DO has only a minor effect on the cell yield. However, the thickness of aerobic biofilm is definitely related to DO, or thickness (mm) = (2.08 x DO)/(9.2 + DO). The biofilm …

A Retrospective Study Of Renaissance Florence, Kathryn Blakeslee Dec 1984

A Retrospective Study Of Renaissance Florence, Kathryn Blakeslee

Architecture Senior Theses

"The architecture of the Florentine Renaissance was a means of establishing a visual, physical identity that represented the new values of a new society. The integration of Medieval and ancient Roman ideals resulted in the making of Renaissance space. In essence, the city of Renaissance Florence can be seen as a synthesis of order and disorder. The "new" insertions of Renaissance order accommodate what was an existing condition of Medieval disorder while simultaneously creating a new coherent architectural identity. The result of this synthesis was much more than a "revival" of ancient architectural sensitivities, rather, it was the development of …

A Performing Arts Center For Arlington, Texas, Rebecca Boles May 1984

A Performing Arts Center For Arlington, Texas, Rebecca Boles

Interior Design Faculty Publications - Archive

In the spring of 1983, several Arlington community groups formed the Performing Arts Coalition. Foremost among their priorities was the establishment of a Performing Arts Center for their community. Arlington undisputedly needs a cultural center and the growth of coalition groups is proof that the city has sufficient interest to sustain such an effort. A performing arts center would be beneficial to the coalition for many reasons. Shared staff and facilities increases the cost effectiveness of the member organizations. A consolidation of facilities would produce the best equipped showcase for the performing arts, and the consolidation of creative talent and …

William Lescaze Reconsidered, William H. Jordy Apr 1984

William Lescaze Reconsidered, William H. Jordy

The Courier

This article gives a critical look to William Lescaze's architectural career. While he had early success, his later career seems to pale in comparison. Regardless, the author praises Lescaze for remaining eclectic and not adhering too strongly to the orthodoxy of modernism.

William Lescaze And Cbs: A Case Study In Corporate Modernism, Dennis P. Doordan Apr 1984

William Lescaze And Cbs: A Case Study In Corporate Modernism, Dennis P. Doordan

The Courier

During the period 1934 to 1949, the Columbia Broadcasting System provided William Lescaze with a series of commissions that, considered together, constitute one of the largest, most varied, and most important bodies of work in his entire career.

Lescaze was responsible for the design of a major new broadcasting facility, the interior design of studio and office spaces, the design of a variety of studio furnishings such as microphones and clocks, the design of a mobile broadcasting vehicle, and the graphic design for CBS facilities across the country. A careful review of the material indicates that Lescaze made a major …

Mcmillan House, Susie Van Kirk Apr 1984

Mcmillan House, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

The architectural integrity of the McMillan House has been negatively impacted by several significant alterations. These include the addition in the northeast corner, the front door, the louvered window in the upstairs of the south wall, and the window shutters. Other alterations have occurred, but they are not particularly intrusive and could remain without impinging upon the building's architecture.

The "Modern" Skyscraper, 1931, Carol Willis Apr 1984

The "Modern" Skyscraper, 1931, Carol Willis

The Courier

This article details the history of The Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS) building, constructed through the partnership of William Lescaze and George Howe in 1932. The author argues the building to this day remains "modern", displaying complexity and a varitey of color and materials. The building is also, the author says, the first skyscraper designed in the International Style. The author also examines the PSFS in the context of other tall buildings of the period, usually described as belonging to the Art Deco style.

Foreward ; William Lescaze And The Rise Of Modern Design In America, Chester Soling, Dennis P. Doordan

The Courier

Foreword: On behalf of the Syracuse University Library Associates, I should like to say what a very great pleasure it is to welcome the Courier back into print. It began publication in 1958 and appeared regularly until two and a half years ago. Henceforward, it will come out twice annually, in the spring and in the fall. This issue, which comes to you in a new cover design and format, is unusual also in that it deals almost wholly with the career and influence of a single person, namely the architect William Lescaze (1896-1969), a major part of whose papers …
