Mu In Details Of Japanese Contemporary Architecture: Can The Void Represent An Idea?, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Although the idea of what architectural details should be varies among the entries in our survey, a common thread runs through them: they all implicitly agree that the form of an architectural detail represents a particular idea of what the detail should be, or, in the negative, that when details are to be excluded or ignored for either ideological or practical considerations, they have no particular form. This seems quite rationa~ even obvious. But in some contemporary Japanese an:hitecture there is anothercase altogether, of details that paradoxically, embody an intention to represent but at the same time to present no …

Thesis Preparatory Booklet - Suburban Civic Center, Charles Angelakis Jan 1994

Thesis Preparatory Booklet - Suburban Civic Center, Charles Angelakis

Architecture Thesis Prep

'My intention is to investigate the reestablishment of the civic center within a typical suburban town of a major metropolitan city. This new 'town square" should be the seat of local law and government, the place of the town's library, site of public services, along with some commercial and residential functions. My goal is to take a site occupied by an architectural ruin which sits as a composition of objects in a field, and by the manipulation of the landscape, along with the introduction of a new piece of architecture, create an ordered composition which begins to become the towns …

School of Architecture - All Scholarship

In this introduction, Bédard traces American architect Peter Eisenman's evolution as an architect and theorist from his work on houses from 1967 until 1980 to a body of work titled, "Cities of Artificial Excavation," which he completed between 1978 and 1988. In "Cities of Artificial Excavation," Eisenman interrogates a series of fictions by using dissimulation to produce an "artificial" architecture.

Civic Pride And The Urban Monument: A Study Of Places For Public Assembly, Jeffrey C. Shumaker Jan 1994

Civic Pride And The Urban Monument: A Study Of Places For Public Assembly, Jeffrey C. Shumaker

Architecture Senior Theses

Imagine a city where people gather in the streets by choice and not by chance[...] What better place is there to witness society at its fullest than in our cities[...] The privatization of the public realm has proven to be destructive for both the city's physical form and its social structure[...] This leads us to the discussion that becomes the reason for my writing this thesis and, ironically, becomes for me the most obvious illustrations of the present urban predicament. The city is in desperate need of a civic architecture[...] a civic architecture is one that is created for the …

Edge Strength Of Window Glass By Mechanical Test, Chris P. Pantelides, Gregory P. Sallee, Joseph E. Minor Jan 1994

Edge Strength Of Window Glass By Mechanical Test, Chris P. Pantelides, Gregory P. Sallee, Joseph E. Minor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A mechanical test is described that can be used to measure the edge strength of annealed and heat-strengthened glass. The mechanical test apparatus stresses only one of the two edge-lines on the edge of a glass specimen. The testing concept employs the theory of unsymmetrical bending. The test device loads glass specimens in a manner that places tensile stresses on the tested edge-line while keeping the other edge-lines at zero stress or in compression. In annealed glass tests, the scored edge-line was found to be 20% weaker than the edge-line opposite the scored edge-line. Comparisons between the edge strengths of …

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intent of my proposal for thesis is an investigation of the synthesis of the ideal and the circumstantial. Eureka General Plan Update, Susie Van Kirk Jul 1993

Eureka General Plan Update, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

Historic resources within the City of Eureka's planning area, which extends from College of the Redwoods to Indianola, reflect the region's development since its settlement in 1850. Significant in the area's social, economic, and architectural history, these resources include a diversity of structures, sites, groups, neighborhoods, and communities, each of which contributes to the planning area's aesthetic qualities and historic context. They are the tangible evidence of the regions past and a heritage to be valued by this and future generations.
