A Braille Translation Solution Using Autocad And Lisp, Brian E. Bennett Aug 1998

A Braille Translation Solution Using Autocad And Lisp, Brian E. Bennett

Graduate Research Papers

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1994 brought new requirements for architects, designers, and drafters to apply Braille symbol sets at various locations of public and private buildings. With production of many drawings using computer-aided drafting, the opportunity exists to automate this process, solve the problem of text to Braille conversion, and satisfy the requirements of federal regulation. This paper presents a LISP programing code structure for use within the AutoCAD drafting and design '\ software to solve the Braille symbol set translation problem with both 2D and 3D representations. An explanation of the logic and a detailed listing of …

Education Through Architecture: Carnival And Merengue Museum, Andres Pastoriza Jul 1998

Education Through Architecture: Carnival And Merengue Museum, Andres Pastoriza

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis examines the ability of architecture to educate through experience. Architecture creates environments which represents the history, folklore, and tradition of a region by way of semantics. individuals interact with the building and become part of it by providing their knowledge and recollection of the signs and symbols. Through the representation of symbols and the recreation of events, the building evokes the collective memory of the individuals who experience them. Folklore relies heavily on experience, as does architecture. The interaction of event, program, space, and form result in architecture that provides all the elements necessary to educate folklore. Post-Occupancy Presidio: How Lighting And Energy Design Goals Compare To Performance For The Thoreau Center For Sustainability, Margot Mcdonald Jun 1998

Post-Occupancy Presidio: How Lighting And Energy Design Goals Compare To Performance For The Thoreau Center For Sustainability, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

The National Park Service was intent on creating a model "green" development at the decommissioned Presidio military base in San Francisco. Two local firms, Community Equity Builders and Tanner Leddy Maytum Stacy (TLMS) Architects forged a partnership which led to one of the first successful historic rehabilitation since the base conversion. Their efforts transformed the turn-of- the-century Letterman Hospital into the Thoreau Center for Sustainability where energy and resource conservation are at the forefront of the building design and operation. The building complex, now occupied for over two years, has been well-documented as a green building and historic rehabilitation project …

Approaching Fallingwater: An Ethography Of Place, Brian Gregory May 1998

Approaching Fallingwater: An Ethography Of Place, Brian Gregory

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has always been more than just a house. It has also functioned as a workplace, a tourist destination, "the best all-time work of American architecture," and a cultural symbol. By talking to some of the people involved in its history and by examining "autho-ethnographic" texts found within the community, I attempt to use ethnographic methods to understand a complicated site. Nestled in the rural Appalachian foothills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Fallingwater is also isolated. It is tempting for visitors to view it as a work of art "plopped down in the middle of nowhere." And …

Fisheries Management Report No. 4 - Planning For The Further Development Of The Aquaculture And Marine Farming Industry At Jurien Bay, Dave Everall Apr 1998

Fisheries Management Report No. 4 - Planning For The Further Development Of The Aquaculture And Marine Farming Industry At Jurien Bay, Dave Everall

Fisheries Published Reports

There is a well documented global requirement for some twenty million tonnes of edible sea foods from aquaculture in the next fifteen years. Most of the projected increase in production will need to be from mariculture because of limiting factors on land based aquaculture. At present, approximately 85%of all aquaculture occurs in the Asian region.

Globally, temperate water species have market advantages because of their ability to supply a growing market preference for a firm white fleshed fin fish. Although significant temperate water aquaculture occurs in various countries north of the equator, there are growing environmental concerns surrounding production of …

A Buddhist Monastery And Temple With A Religious Center In New York City, Jeffrey Michael Dvi-Vardhana

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The Buddhist Temple form has remained unchanged in the last 2,500 years. The thesis will become an exploration of contemporary issues of acculturation and transition of Buddhism in the United States. The thesis will examine architecturally, the individual spirit of contemplation and meditation of a monistic religion. This allows the thesis to transform, architecturally and typologically, a Buddhist Temple and Monastery of the Theravada Sect, with a Religious Center.
