Deep Discount Group Pass Programs As Instruments For Increasing Transit Revenue And Ridership, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo May 2004

Deep Discount Group Pass Programs As Instruments For Increasing Transit Revenue And Ridership, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo

City and Regional Planning

Transit properties in the USA have historically experienced loss of market share and low levels of farebox recovery. They resorted to service expansion to maximize subsidies. Experience suggests that: (a) fare increases have not had the desired effect; (b) fare reductions can boost ridership but can also reduce revenue and increase subsidies. The challenge lies with the adoption of such strategies as deep discount group pass programs that can produce more marginal revenue than cost. Deep discount transit pass programs provide groups of people with unlimited-ride transit passes in exchange for a contractual payment for or on behalf of pass …

Knowing Today What We’Ll Miss Tomorrow: When Teaching And Practice Go Hand-In-Hand, Jill Pable, Katherine S. Ankerson

Interior Design Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

What an influence my education has had on me! I don’t mean just the subjects. Certainly that was why I went to school. To learn about architecture. To learn to design. To make an impact on the world we live in. I received an excellent education. I left school prepared to enter the professional world, and build upon my abilities with each experience in each firm. A group of lifelong friends bolstered my progress, a built-in support from those who know why we put in the late nights, know the pressure of a deadline, and the exhilaration of meeting it …

Museums are one of the primary cultural icons of the city. As such, they embody ideas not only about history, art, or nature, but also about place. A great museum develops from ideas about its place. Our proposal for Guangdong Museum (New) is "The Box of Changes." It evolves from two ideas about place: place as real artifact-the site- and place as a cultural idea-the I Ching.

New Zealand's Search For Sustainability: Ideas For California Planning, Paul Wack Apr 2004

New Zealand's Search For Sustainability: Ideas For California Planning, Paul Wack

City and Regional Planning

New Zealand, or Aotearoa to the native Maori, is a small island nation of 4 million people and 47 million sheep, located across the Tasman Sea from Australia. The home of the Kiwi (an endangered bird, a popular fruit, and the friendly people) is about the size of Colorado, although the shape of the north and south islands would approximate the elongated length of California.

Much of New Zealand would remind us of Oregon and the Sierras with their majestic Southern Alps. Overall, New Zealand reminds me of California during the 1950’s, before urban sprawl kicked in with a vengeance. …

The Tactile And Sensual: Redeveloping An Abandoned Granite Quarry As Hospice Facilities For The Elderly, Linnaea Stuart

Architecture Thesis Prep

The complex nature of one dealing with the end of their time here on Earth can never be fulling grasped by one moment, one person, or one idea of death. The cycle of life itself is a constant reflection of overlapping circumstances and memories that can only be understood in concurrence. The phenomenological aspect of 'being' both physically as well as mentally allows for this simultaneity to occur.

As one part of mans preparation of death, architecture has the potential to invoke an acute awareness of being (the understanding that one is still an individual with importance ans place in …

Objective And Subjective Evaluation Of The Use Of Directional Sound Sources In Auralizations, Lily M. Wang, Michelle C Vigeant Apr 2004

Objective And Subjective Evaluation Of The Use Of Directional Sound Sources In Auralizations, Lily M. Wang, Michelle C Vigeant

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Omni-directional sources are often used in room acoustic computer simulations, as opposed to directional sources, since measured directivity data are quite limited and difficult to obtain.  The purpose of this study is to investigate the objective and subjective significance of adding more complex directivity to the sources used in computer simulations and auralizations.  A simple hall was used as the modelled space in the software program ODEON.  Three source positions on stage and three receiver audience positions were chosen.  Impulse responses (IRs) were calculated for the nine source/receiver combinations, using (a) an omni-directional source, (b) a highly directional source beaming …

Interactions Of Model Detail Level And Scattering Coefficients In Room Acoustic Computer Simulation, Lily M. Wang, Jonathan Rathsam, Steven Ryherd Apr 2004

Interactions Of Model Detail Level And Scattering Coefficients In Room Acoustic Computer Simulation, Lily M. Wang, Jonathan Rathsam, Steven Ryherd

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

A previous study by the author showed that varying the geometric detail level across a normal range for room acoustic computer modeling has little effect on the results of those computer simulations, if major surfaces in the hall are still constructed accurately.  Scattering coefficients were kept constant across all detail levels.  If one were using lower levels of detail, though, one might assign different material scattering coefficients to compensate for the less mixing geometry.  To study the interaction between model detail level and scattering coefficient selection, three performance spaces in Omaha, Nebraska have been modeled in ODEON at varying levels …

An Introduction To Biophilia And The Built Environment, Corey Griffin Apr 2004

An Introduction To Biophilia And The Built Environment, Corey Griffin

School of Architecture Faculty Publication and Presentations

Today, the technology and knowledge exists to create a building that touches the earth lightly during both construction and day-to-day operations. However, what has been often neglected by creators of low-impact “green” buildings is the need for spaces to be habitable. Occupants of built environments don’t want simply to work, play, eat, or sleep in a functional building. They want to be inspired, invigorated, comforted, and reassured by their surroundings. They want spaces that will make them more productive and healthy, and they want spaces in which they love to be—spaces that, as RMI’s Amory Lovins puts it, create “delight …

Shandon Plan, Fall 2003/ Winter 2004, Crp 410/ 411 Community Planning Lab

City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects

Shandon is a small community located about twenty miles east of Paso Robles in northern San Luis Obispo County. The town is adjacent to state Highway 46, and its main street, Centre Street, is also a state route—Highway 41—which runs through the center of town. The town’s population is growing, and currently totals about one thousand residents. The town’s population comprises two main groups; there are roughly equal numbers of Latino and white residents living in Shandon.

Shandon has very few services to offer its residents. The population is currently too small to support many businesses such as shops, restaurants, …

We Shared In Its History: 1123 State Street, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Author writes of her personal experiences growing up in an historic house in downtown Bowling Green, Ky. Built in 1844, this house served as a private residence, an overnight guest house, the headquarters for Johnnie Massey Clay, President of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church's Women's Missionary Society, and apartments for senior adults, small families and young professionals. Over the years, what was originally a two room over two room Greek-revival townhouse built in the popular Flemish bond brick pattern had at least four additions and was renovated for creative reuses.

Updating Reliability Of Steel Miter Gates On Locks And Dams Using Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol, Stuart D. Foltz Feb 2004

Updating Reliability Of Steel Miter Gates On Locks And Dams Using Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol, Stuart D. Foltz

Architectural Engineering

As both reliability analyses and systematic inspection programs for the world’s infrastructure gain increased usage and prominence, it becomes more important to use the information from routine visual inspections to update lifetime reliability assessments and resulting life-cycle inspection/repair strategies. The Army Corps of Engineers currently uses reliability analyses to economically justify the major rehabilitation of navigation structures. This paper illustrates how the Condition Index visual inspections for locks and dams can be modified and used to update the reliability analysis of a steel miter gate. The miter gates on two existing locks and dams along the Mississippi River are used …
