What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
I am of the opinion that original African culture has not been fully portrayed especially in our Architecture, at least that is the reason we still run helter-skelter using / adopting Roman classical forms of cornices (concrete fascia), entablatures in a bit to coining ours. I believe if we could only make move to look inwards; there is richness in African originality that if harnessed would yield unfathomable impact. CPDI Africa is a platform we have craved …

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
Our Africa is a continent with unparalleled cultural richness and stories to be told. However, what we are witnessing today is only the smallest fraction of the vast potential we have got. So much resource just sitting by, time moving fast and we seem to be stuck in the present while the whole world speeding pass by us. Instead of laying back and complaining we took it upon ourselves to do something …

What inspired you to enter this competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
For the past three years I was working on research called Ethioplugin Add-on Library at my campus (EiABC). There the objective, was digitalizing the heritages of Ethiopia such as furniture and fixtures, patterns and textures, construction details, so that they will be accessible by the professionals like interior designers, architects electronically. This made me familiar with working on cultural elements and extracting designed product out of them. I was excited (about the competition) …

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
The evolution of African architecture has almost come to a standstill due to western influence. The potential of construction materials used in African designs have a far greater utility in their specific climates or natural conditions as opposed to western materials. It‘s easy to say my inspiration came from my deep passion to explore the potential of African construction materials for what they are truly worth.

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
The culturally rich and diverse nature of the African continent has always fascinated me. The long history of construction skills and know-how displayed by different ethnic groups that reflect the harmonious symphony with the various landscapes and terrains have and would continue to exert the potentials to inspire the architecture of the next generations. For example, the use of fractal geometries, which is native to various tribes of the continent, serves an important …

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?
Architecture in Africa today is a receding echo of our heritage. Africa's history and culture is rich and diverse, yet we often live in environments with imported architecture that don't reflect Africa's heritage and our identities. Architecture is the creation of spaces subjective to context, identity and the basics of life. Through architectural design that considers Africa's cultural context, history and materiality, a comprehensive, thoughtful and sustainable architecture can be developed for Africa.

Shifting The Tide: Transit-Oriented Development And Active Transportation Planning In Los Angeles, Forrest Chamberlain, William W. Riggs
Focus
Los Angeles (LA) has the reputation of an auto dependent city. Although the region is served by a robust public transportation system, the majority of the population commutes by automobile and has developed in sprawling manner leading to poor air quality, traffic congestion and unsafe streets. Despite this, in recent years, the LA region has made significant headway in reversing sprawl and automobile use. This has included encouraging greater land use densities around transit stations, coupled with investments to active transportation systems. This article presents an overview of the historical context of automobile dependency in Los Angeles, the current transit-oriented …

Sur Les Traces De La Fabrique Artistique : Quelques Réflexions Sur La Dimension Spatiale Et Matérielle De L’Histoire De L’Art, Vincent Veschambre
Artl@s Bulletin
This text gives a reading of the notion of trace in the perspective of a geographer’s scientific trajectory, committed to grasping individual and social relations to space. Applying this notion to art history probes into the identification of who inscribes art in space, and for what purpose. Such an approach bears similarities with archeology, which cares for the lesser known or recognized traces, and is able to recast the wealth of social actors that have been concealed by history.
Property Value Changes From Public Transportation: How The Greenbush Commuter Line Affected Property Values, Sarah C. Evans
Property Value Changes From Public Transportation: How The Greenbush Commuter Line Affected Property Values, Sarah C. Evans
Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby
Prior studies have investigated the impact on property values to the proximity of established public transportation stations. Public transportation is thought to increase value of towns and properties, giving residents more options for transportation to and around the city. Both benefits and consequences of public transportation exist, allowing for either a raise or lower of property values in towns with stops. This paper analyzes the Greenbush Commuter line in Massachusetts, seeing if the proximity to the stops has an affect on the property of values in the towns. A difference – in – difference model is used to investigate a …

Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali
Journal of International Women's Studies
The purpose of this research project is to put into context the role of women in Saudi Arabia through reading of symbols and signs of the physical shape of the first sky scrapers: AlMamlakah (Kingdom) and AlFaisalia. The paper analyses perceptions of modern Saudi Arabian architecture and the significance of our visual perception to gender codification is what this project attempts to analyze. The project uses three interlaced lines of investigation. The first is the relationship of architecture to the culture and the population. The research paper will study the architecture of the two skyscrapers. The second line of investigation …

Documenting Spatial And Temporal Information For Heritage Preservation: A Case Study Of Sri Lanka, Chiranthi Wijesundara, Shigeo Sugimoto, Bhuva Narayan
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Cultural Heritage Properties (CHPs) around the world have been altered or destroyed due to various unforeseen factors, both natural and human-made. Consequently, as a preparedness approach around such disasters, documenting the CHPs are crucial to any efforts to repair, rebuild or relocate them. With advancements in digital technologies, integrating them into our documentation to improve heritage preservation has become a common approach. Here the main concern is on Spatial and Temporal (ST) information and the paper proposes that with recent developments in the field of Geospatial technologies, heritage preservation can be enhanced and improved by documenting ST information parallel to …

2016 Archaeological Investigations At The Sanders Site (41lr2), Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson, Mark Walters
CRHR Research Reports
The T. M. Sanders site (41LR2) is a large and impressive ancestral Caddo mound center and village situated on an alluvial terrace (450 ft. amsl) at the mouth of Bois d’Arc Creek and the Red River. With the permission of the landowners (the Crawford family and the Sanders family), periodic archaeological and geophysical investigations have been conducted across much of the 200+ acres of the Sanders site since 2013; this article primarily discusses the work done in March 2016. These archaeological investigations, including controlled surface collections and shovel testing, recovered significant new information from many of the 39 non-mound habitation …

This study evaluated a sample of online resources on permaculture using a framework of parameters reflecting website usability and content quality. Best practice for website usability, as well as diversity of information and applicability, was addressed. …

A Simple Spiritual Building Guima Earth Shrine, Peter Blundell Jones, Derong Kong
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The Dong People live in South-West China, in a mountainous and formerly inaccessible landscape. All Dong buildings were traditionally constructed by local carpenters. In this paper will focus on a smallDong spiritual building, an Earth shrine. It is a village shrine in Guima village. The shrine links the value of the family with the fertility of the earth. It is a communal site combining individual observances for a confirmation of shared belief, and a construction of society. The shrine also serves as a spiritual place where villagers can pray for blessing. After a short general introduction, this narrative approach addresses …
