Efficient Envelope Designs To Maximize Residential Cooling Energy Savings In Bangkok Neighborhoods, Natthaumporn Inprom, Daranee Jareemit Jan 2021

Efficient Envelope Designs To Maximize Residential Cooling Energy Savings In Bangkok Neighborhoods, Natthaumporn Inprom, Daranee Jareemit

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Architectural design can significantly improve home energy-efficiency. New energy-saving techniques are regularly proposed; however, integrating all design parameters into the energy simulation specific knowledge and is time-consuming, making it difficult for non-experts in building energy analysis. This present study investigates the impact of envelope designs on household cooling energy consumption in housing complexes located in Bangkok neighborhood areas. The study selects a representative house and identifies a range of envelope designs, including thermal properties of exterior walls and roof, painted color, length of roof eaves, and window-to-wall ratio (WWR). The Latin hypercube method randomly generates two hundred sets of design …

Does Start-Up Ny Promote Firm Formation?, Woosung Kim Jan 2021

Does Start-Up Ny Promote Firm Formation?, Woosung Kim

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This paper explores the impact of START-UP NY policy throughout simulations by using the agent-based model. In 2013, Governor Cuomo introduced the policy START-UP NY (New York), designed to create more jobs by helping people start or move their qualified businesses into tax-free zones. Measuring the impact of START-UP NY, however, is difficult because the data are not yet available for causal inference purposes. The agent-based model developed for this paper is designed to simulate the impact of START-UP NY on the local economy of Tompkins County by conducting the Cobb-Douglas function into the model using the data from the …

Bangkok’S Bumpy Road To Sustainable Urban Mobility : Governance Challenges In The Promotion Of Cycle-Friendliness, Tanapon Panthasen, Bart Lambregts, Supaporn Kaewko Leopairojana Jan 2021

Bangkok’S Bumpy Road To Sustainable Urban Mobility : Governance Challenges In The Promotion Of Cycle-Friendliness, Tanapon Panthasen, Bart Lambregts, Supaporn Kaewko Leopairojana

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Many cities promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthier mode of urban transport. The challenge often is bigger than anticipated, as it involves inducing behavioural change among different groups of actors and reaching agreement about the reallocation of scarce resources. Recent experiences in Bangkok are illustrative. Here, multi-year efforts by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote cycling have yielded only partial success. Recreational cycling has increased, but utility cycling much less so. A gap remains between what the BMA delivers in terms of pro-cycling policies and what Bangkokians need in order to become utility cyclists. This paper investigates …

Nodes And Streets : Exploring The Pedestrian Mobility Pattern In The Intersection Of The Streets In Dhaka City, Zishan Fuad Choudhury Jan 2021

Nodes And Streets : Exploring The Pedestrian Mobility Pattern In The Intersection Of The Streets In Dhaka City, Zishan Fuad Choudhury

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

A viable pedestrian movement has always been a challenging for the urban planners and designers. The modern perception is to create a mobility towards pedestrian environment and at the same time limiting the dependency on vehicular movement. Pedestrians plays an important key role on reshaping nodes and the streets. The mental mapping of a pedestrian guides him to mobilize from one point to another and creates a pattern of an individual. When hundreds of points are created by the pedestrians a new order of network has created and different functions are intervened often to support them. These changes are responsible …

Ethnographic Approach For Research On Vernacular Architecture : Four Case Studies Of Indigenous Communities In Indonesia, Agus D. Hariyanto, Iwan Sudradjat, Sugeng Triyadi Jan 2021

Ethnographic Approach For Research On Vernacular Architecture : Four Case Studies Of Indigenous Communities In Indonesia, Agus D. Hariyanto, Iwan Sudradjat, Sugeng Triyadi

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Many ethnic groups with unique cultures exist in Indonesia, but their vernacular architecture and living cultures need to be supported to ensure sustainability. One example of how a more anthropological approach to the design and planning of the built environment requires a better understanding is the study of the living culture of indigenous communities. Unsurprisingly, an ethnographic approach is critical to studying these communities' architecture and living culture in Indonesia. This study aims to outline the main principles of the ethnographic approach and review the implementation of these principles in previous studies on the vernacular architecture of indigenous communities in …

Tiny House: Reflection On Participatory Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry In The Kampung Community, Elita Nuraeny, Amira Paramitha, Herlily Herlily

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

At the end of 2015, the government of Jakarta declared a river normalization program to widen both banks of the Ciliwung River and increase its channel capacity. Approximately 15 meters of inspection road was to be constructed immediately. To avoid eviction, 223 households in Kampung Anak Kali (KAKC) reduced their domestic spaces by shearing five meters off their houses, forcing them to allocate less space for daily activities, including cooking, bathing, and washing. Living in a tight space, constructing a tiny house is a necessity, not a lifestyle choice. The residents of KAKC, therefore, live in limited areas for survival, …
