Renton Highlands Library Daylighting Analysis, Sergio Palleroni, Vanessa Vanderhoof, Huafen Hu, Ben Dienes, Angela Cutright

Research-Based Design Initiative

It is common knowledge that natural light is better for the built environment and occupying such environments. It also is important to note that society spends the better part of their lives in structures or buildings; these spaces have a hand in our daily experiences. Not only do people benefit from natural lighting, physically and mentally, but daylighting systems can also lower dependency on electricity, lowering the usability and lifetime costs of a structure. There is also a chance for creating too much daylight, bright surfaces and areas can hinder the occupants and some spaces do not need daylighting. It …

This LCA looks at the cradle to grave operations of a building, quantifying the environmental impacts of the materials, production process, transportation, operating use, deconstruction, and disposal. There are several environmental categories that can be identified for evaluating global impacts including global warming, ozone depletion, eutrophication, acidification, smog formation, particulates, and fossil fuels. According to the International Organization for Standardization, there are four phases for performing LCA of a building: goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory (LCI), impact assessment and analysis of results. The goal and scope defines the intent of the LCA (cradle to gate, cradle to grave) …

Wall Assembly And Material Analysis, Sam North, Cole Poland, Reid Weber, Sergio Palleroni, Huafen Hu, Ben Deines, Tha Architecture

Research-Based Design Initiative

We researched the thought process and reasoning behind the design of wall assemblies from start to finish. We explored the specific reasoning for placement and use of every material in the wall and brought to light where the reasoning came from. The wall assemblies in question are those of an academic building currently under construction on Portland Community College, Cascade Campus designed by Thomas Hacker Associates Architecture (THA).

The project consists of two new buildings and a plaza space. The building programs consist of classrooms, open study rooms, a cafeteria and administrative offices. We analyzed the wall type and assembly …

he building was certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold after its construction, achieving a 45% reduction in energy use from the original building. A geothermal (ground source heat pump) cooling system is the primary cooling device in the building, along with operable windows in classrooms for natural ventilation and cooling (PSU).

Portland State University’s commitment to sustainability sparked the impetus to push for a design that would achieve the LEED Gold standard. Originally designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca (ZGF) Architects and PAE Engineering, the building serves as the main space for all of the branches of Portland …

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

This year (2012), the Studio returned to two previous DPAC communities--Doña Ana Village and downtown Las Cruces. Addressing these communities concurrently this time presented the opportunity to consider how they are connected and the context they share. In cooperation with the New Mexico Mainstreet Program and local community organizations, DPAC students held conversations with local stakeholders, studied the communities and their larger context (in person and through secondary sources) to identify assets and challenges, and uncover strategies that build upon the region's history and existing strengths, preserve and restore valuable ecologies, make the most of scarce resources (water), and make …

Roswell Visioning Plan, Anne Godfrey, Jose Zelaya

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

It is our strong belief that economic and community development go hand in hand, and that there cannot be success in one without equal accomplishment in the other. Our project area, as seen on the next page, reflects this belief. It includes not only the entire strip of East Second Street between Main and Atkinson, but Garden Avenue and the residential neighborhoods to the north and south as well. The class was divided into five groups, each responsible for recommending designs for a prescribed geographic area.

Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride Mar 2013

Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

Mountain View is a unique community bound by the Bosque and rich history of industry, agriculture, urban settlement and dispute. The boundary along 2nd Street marks the division within the community and its sense of place. It also marks a challenge to rethink the parameters of economy, ecology and welfare and reconcile the disparities between them. Our assignment was simple. Redesign 2nd Street. But along the way we realized that Mountain View holds much more meaning and purpose. This neighborhood has the potential to face its challenges through innovative, elegant design and serve as an example of a beautiful reconciliation. …

These non-binding design guidelines suggest how new construction in the historic core can best contribute to the distinctive character of that area. Largely developed before the rise of the automobile, the organization of historic buildings here creates compact walkable areas. Around the courthouse, for instance, business blocks built up to the sidewalk's edge define the square and nearby streets as pedestrian-friendly outdoor rooms.

A campus master plan is a far-reaching plan of action for the development and preservation of the physical campus. It is intended to guide administrators, designers, and supporters in their efforts to improve its facilities and environment over the long term.

The most recent campus master plan at Andrews University was completed in 2002 and was titled “Spirit of Place.” It focused on a series of principles and general strategies to guide planning on campus, but also included a series of actual design proposals. Many of these proposals, some of which had a much longer history, were implemented. These include …
