The design of outdoor urban environments is a dynamic and collaborative process of arranging these parts to create places with purpose. Mature trees create more attractive residential neighborhoods and contribute a significant amount to the resale value of a home (Benotto, 2002). According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, one mature tree can amount to at least $10,000 of a home's resale value and will typically account for 15 percent of the property's value (Benotto 2002). In addition, the combined economic value of a street lined with mature trees is greater than the net sum of the value of the individual trees (Benotto 2002). This research focused on preferred urban trail attributes and related these to restorative places and user experiences. Focused interviews were employed in the study. Restoration was shown in aspects of naturalness and excitement. Responses to the interviews indicated that a convergence of multiple physical features contributed significantly to a user's restorative experience on the trail, especially where tree canopy was juxtaposed with distant views and there were connections to active urban villages. Where the trail did not enhance the user experience the trail was not seen as contributing to the community in a significant way. Themes emerged from the focused …

Marie Monica Harbeck graduated from the University of Oregon and Arthur from the University of Kansas and Harvard Graduate School and met while they were sequestered as civilian employees by the Army Engineer Board at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, conducting camouflage research during World War II. The City of Dallas has embarked upon an aggressive economic redevelopment effort in the downtown area. Economic goals of this redevelopment effort are closely tied to and dependent upon a critical mass of downtown residents. The target number of residents is 10,000 by 2015 (Strategic Engagement: Dallas' Economic Development Plan. City of Dallas, Office of Economic Development, 2005.) However, the urban form of downtown Dallas is a vehicle-oriented network of streets. This paper links the study of olfaction and autobiographical memory with the practices of reminiscence therapy and landscape architecture, with the goal of bringing this life-enhancing therapy into the garden. Smells have proven to be powerful stimulators of early, emotional childhood memories due to the structure and evolution of the human brain. Research shows improved self-esteem, less depression and better social integration in older adults who are able to call up autobiographical memories in the process of reminiscence therapy. From the Highway Beautification of Lady Bird Johnson in the 1960's to the environmental issues of today, designers are focused on ways to incorporate native plant material in the roadside. Prospect-refuge theory (Appleton 1975) is based on habitat theory (Darwin 1958) which states that the ability to see (prospect) but not be seen (refuge) is basic to many biological needs. According to Appleton, the ability to see without being seen increases perceived safety which increases the esthetic pleasure experienced in the environment. Wekerle and Egan (1991) state that the perception of safety is necessary for feelings of enjoyment and comfort in urban open space. The conversion of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY) Railroad line into the KATY Trail has instigated measurable increases in adjacent property values, while new middle and high-end condominiums and townhomes have replaced older and often dilapidated single- and multi-family structures.
