Atlas Of Walls: Wall Speculations, Casiana Kennedy Oct 2016

Atlas Of Walls: Wall Speculations, Casiana Kennedy

Architecture Thesis Prep

The project lies at the intersection between the wall as device of separation + text as narrative of separation. The wall is re-examined as a LIVING architectural element that acts as an ACTOR - a necessity - in the translation of text to architecture within a city palimpsest. The wall’s capacity to create limit and separation (walled sanctuary) will be explored within the dense context of the contemporary city, wherever that might be.

The wall is not passive, it is not a given, but a constructed entity that addresses problems of space defining and ritual in a direct/efficient/explicit way that …

What Is Sacred, Maxwell K. Baum Oct 2016

What Is Sacred, Maxwell K. Baum

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis aims to reinterpret the notion of sacred space and explore architectures role in the creation of sacred space. Stripped of the religious connotations of the sacred, this thesis hopes to create an architecture that balances between the individual and the collective, fosters both introspective reflection and extrospective contemplation, and proposes architecture for the experiencing of the sacred. Ultimately this project will make sacred architecture and experience out of a normal, mundane, and profane program and elevate the users experience to that of a transcendental one.

Provisional Permanence, Ian M. Jackson, Matthew J. Marinelli Oct 2016

Provisional Permanence, Ian M. Jackson, Matthew J. Marinelli

Architecture Thesis Prep

The oceans take up 71 percent of our planet. For the east coast, Barrier Islands are the first line of defense against storms and will become the most affected areas because of sea level rise in the next hundred years. There is no stopping sea level rise and the time and money spent thus far has not been efficient and requires a different approach.

The barrier islands may be the first line of defense against storms, but they are more than that. There is a long standing allure to the islands that we’ve come to know as beach culture. For …

Charon's Passage: The Journey To Nimiety, Nicholas Kronauer Oct 2016

Charon's Passage: The Journey To Nimiety, Nicholas Kronauer

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis aims to reconsider the possibility and potential of the mausoleum as an architectural contradiction by reconceptualizing the mausoleum as a typology for public space, thus inverting the traditional objective of introspection and the object-form, interior-exterior dialectic of funerary architecture. By engaging the mausoleum with 21st-century urbanization, traditional notions of permanence, meaning, and tectonics can be renegotiated through the juxtaposition of a foreign object that activated by the appropriation and integration of a social program. Through this thesis, the mausoleum is no longer a place for reflection or solidarity but will operate as a stage set to frame and …

Cyber Security In An Age Of Insecurity, Angela Copes Oct 2016

Cyber Security In An Age Of Insecurity, Angela Copes

Architecture Thesis Prep

By combining the structure and space of Gothic Revival churches with the programmatic elements of a data center, two problems can be addressed. First, the churches avoid a fate of abandonment and obsolescence. As the Christian population declines and consolidates, these monuments are given a chance to maintain significance.

Second, through design, data centers can become a more integrated piece of the communities they serve. Instead of data centers being isolated warehouses in the middle of nowhere, people can have a better understanding of what allows their internet at home to connect them to the global network.

A Re-Application Of Neo-Plasticism: De Stijl Architecture In A Contemporary Context, Tyler Holdren Oct 2016

A Re-Application Of Neo-Plasticism: De Stijl Architecture In A Contemporary Context, Tyler Holdren

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis will apply the principles of neo-plasticism to a contemporary building and site. The aim of this project is to extend de Stijl architecture into a contemporary context, making use of modern building methods and materials in an effort to express the full potential of the neoplastic project.

In order to achieve this one must select a site that is contextually scarce as well as one that will allow the building to be experienced from all sides. A site that is not contextually rich will enable a sense of self-referentiality within the project which is a critical theme to …

Life As A House: A Manifesto For The New Iconic House, Ana Paola Hernandez Derbez, Domenica Velasco Oct 2016

Life As A House: A Manifesto For The New Iconic House, Ana Paola Hernandez Derbez, Domenica Velasco

Architecture Thesis Prep

The house, is one of the most fundamental architectural archetypes, has long been used as unbuilt or built manifestos to declare the avant garde of the discipline. As designers, we need to re-visualize design concepts to create architecture that integrates and corresponds to the way we dwell. Innovating design in the same way technology and digitalization have been innovating production and the way we live. This thesis investigates a return to the design of a house as a manifesto, focusing on today’s advanced modes of fabrication and evolving ways of living to challenge the current design mindset.

Library To Nowhere, Anna Sernicki

Architecture Thesis Prep

Using the metaphor of the pyramid and the labyrinth as a precedent, I am interested in deconstructing existing programmed spaces into the essential spatial qualities of architecture.

Is it possible to question the nature of a space, while at the same time experiencing that space?

Public Domesticities, Taylor Hagan Oct 2016

Public Domesticities, Taylor Hagan

Architecture Thesis Prep

In a lecture entitled ‘The Room, The Street, and the Human Agreement,’ Louis Kahn argued that the room is the beginning of architecture. Looking to engage in a similar conversation, this thesis recognizes the significance of the ecologywithin the domestic realm. Domesticities are constructed between walls, windows and doors, but are filled with furniture, materials and stuff that connect to personal preference, evoke a sense of intimacy and set the stage for a flux of activity. While explicit architectural form of a house or dwelling may express certain programmatic designation and usage, the user is ultimately king. Through personal selection …

Framing The Future: Imagining The City Through The Lens Of Film, Sofia Zavala Ferreira Oct 2016

Framing The Future: Imagining The City Through The Lens Of Film, Sofia Zavala Ferreira

Architecture Thesis Prep

With a great interest in the relationship between film and architecture, this project establishes its subject matter on the possibilities presented in science fiction cinema and speculative design. By extracting attributes from these that would influence design and architectural concerns, a bridge between the disconnected imagined and real, current and future, can be created through the creation of a speculative scenario and a narrative. It seeks to utilize cinematic design and storytelling conventions to successfully convey the desired atmosphere, architectural realities, and life conditions of a fictional city. By utilizing advanced digital techniques often used in cinema itself, including but …

As Above, So Below: Tapping Into The Latent Energy Of Abandoned Underground Infrastructure, Alexandra N. Ramirez Oct 2016

As Above, So Below: Tapping Into The Latent Energy Of Abandoned Underground Infrastructure, Alexandra N. Ramirez

Architecture Thesis Prep

1

Abandoned underground infrastructure is an example of an untapped surplus in energy that an architect has the opportunity to reappropriate. Tunnels in particular, can be used as systems to heat or cool a network of buildings above ground to create more sustainable urban environments. In addition to greater energy efficiency, the system could also have beneficial social implications within segregated cities by providing fluid connections between divided neighborhoods.

This thesis will establish a framework for repurposing underground infrastructures. The strategy operates under an umbrella of sustainability and urban improvement which are two concepts applicable to sites far beyond the …

Real Estate: Urban Renewal At Shibati Community, Chongqing, Wenxin Zeng

Architecture Thesis Prep

The project is a “urban renewal” project at Shibati Community in Chongqing, China. The title “Real Estate” suggested that the land never become “real” until there are activities, communications happened between the occupants. The government did several renovation project in Chongqing, either totally destroy the entire site and build a copy on the site by saying we are preserving the history, or solely refurnished the façade of the houses but leave the inside of the house at a rough condition. The project is a critique of what the Chinese government and other official agencies in China have tended to respond …

Y'All Come Back Now, Ya Hear: A Reflection On Tourism And The Carnivalesque, Kolby Forbes Oct 2016

Y'All Come Back Now, Ya Hear: A Reflection On Tourism And The Carnivalesque, Kolby Forbes

Architecture Thesis Prep

With the departure of manufacturing and industrial production from urban centers, contemporary American cities have turned to tourism as a method of turning the experiences and memories of a site into a commodity for public consumption. This pursuit of capital produces bubbles of pure spectacle that neglect historical events of significance through a series of simplifications and reductions. The investigation of this thesis is to hyper accelerate these negations, creating spectacles of commodity fetishism into an absurdist event of carnival through a series of urban pavilions, similar to those produced in John Hejduk's Masque explorations, revealing the discrepancies and contradictions …

Any Given Sunday, Dabota Wilcox Oct 2016

Any Given Sunday, Dabota Wilcox

Architecture Thesis Prep

Our lives are defined by the things we surround ourselves with. They captivate our thoughts, moods, and desires, but besides their ability to transfix us, they posses a power to transform us. They can shape our needs, values, and behaviors. They ultimately leave us with transformative experiences that provide and enforce within us our beliefs. The rise in prominence of pop culture as a force in shaping the way in which people see and confront the world has meant that our attachments are as disparate and ubiquitous as ever. We communicate and enforce that which we hold close by the …

Learning From The Informal, Cherif Farid Oct 2016

Learning From The Informal, Cherif Farid

Architecture Thesis Prep

Architecture could learn from the socio-cultural norms of informal Cairo and could implement professional expertise to create a new housing typology that achieves the people’s needs.

Housing 20 million people and still growing, Cairo mirrors the global phenomenon of unplanned urban growth. The people have been forced to construct their own dwelling units as the government fails to provide them shelter. Approximately 65 percent of the population of Cairo lives in so-called informal housing: four to ten story concrete and brick infill structures built without legal permits in the desert or on former agrarian land. These informal housing projects are …

The Architecture Of Collapse, Alison Sekerak Oct 2016

The Architecture Of Collapse, Alison Sekerak

Architecture Thesis Prep

The world is changing around us. There is no more denying it. We are running out of resources. We are polluting our air and water. Sea levels are rising, and with it, natural disasters. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, drought. We are killing each other. Economies are collapsing and countries are dissolving. The world is changing. Stories of apocalypse have been prevalent in our society for decades, but they may not be a thing of science fiction anymore. When the world does change, what are architects going to do about it?

An architecture must be designed to enable the survival of …

Ruin-Naissance, Fatma Gonca Tunc Oct 2016

Ruin-Naissance, Fatma Gonca Tunc

Architecture Thesis Prep

Ruin-naissance is the term I use to describe not only the resurrection of an archeological site, but also the rebirth of an idea about how we think about ruins and how new construction can enhance the experience of these kinds of sites.

The principle contention of this thesis is that a better understanding of the fragmented evidence presented by an archeological site can be seen through the lens of a contemporary architectural intervention that responds sensitively to an ancient site. In doing this, the intervention needs to address issues of identity, narrative and historiography. The new architecture should not ignore …

Contemporary Infrastructure For The Sustainable Mid-Sized City, Christian Martinez Oct 2016

Contemporary Infrastructure For The Sustainable Mid-Sized City, Christian Martinez

Architecture Thesis Prep

Embedded within the Feasibility Assessment of Sustainable Transportation: Syracuse study’s goals is an interest in urban mobility particularly in mid-sized cities in America. Well referenced texts tend to deliberate on issues of urban infrastructure in great urban metropolises. This presumes infrastructure improvements can universally have a positive impact on urban mobility irrespective of city size. But is it possible for the prosperity of cities to be augmented by virtue of investing in policy and infrastructure for sustainable transportation through following megalopolis biased guidebooks? Vishaan Chakrabarti advocates for a more urban America in “A County of Cities”, because of their ability …

The Allopoiesis Of The Artifact, Cristina Abondano Dec 2015

The Allopoiesis Of The Artifact, Cristina Abondano

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis contends that Urban Artifacts of Pathological Permanence, as defined by Aldo Rossi, are dead not only because of the inability of their form to allow for a new use, but because of other multiple variables. Being born with a disadvantageous Form is only the beginning of a series of possible illnesses; which flourish out of the vulnerability caused by the death of the political idea that brought forth the Urban Artifact’s Form in its original conception. The death of the political idea leaves the Urban Artifact with a dubious raison d’etre. The Form has then to be able …

The Synchronous City, Patricia Olivera Dec 2015

The Synchronous City, Patricia Olivera

Architecture Thesis Prep

Architects’ conceptualizations of cities reference and reflect trends in their societies at their time of conception. During the early 1900's architects speculated on modernist visions of cities, during the mid-late 1900's radical visions of cities emerged, and now, this project will operate among the framework of previous visions of cities by architects and envision a city based on digital information and communications technologies. We are living a Digital Revolution and exist in the age of Information. This thesis will explore the ways in which a city will be conceptualized if it was based on digital information and communication technologies (ICTs) …

Divided Cyprus, Nicola Kyverniti

Architecture Thesis Prep

Creating urban interventions in the city at different scales and sites strategically chosen to attract the city population would have the potential to expose the state of the urban fabric. Nodes designed to alter the perspective of the occupant. Exposure created through the language of architecture. Revealling dividing elements emphasizes the need for a true symbol of dialogue and freedom of discussion between the separated communities. At a global scale, conflict is not something that can truly be resolved or diminished. The notion of conflict occurs in certain locations at different periods, following the evolution of political, social, economic, and …

Subversive Supermarket: Tactical Interjections Into The Everyday Experience, Taylor Johnson Dec 2015

Subversive Supermarket: Tactical Interjections Into The Everyday Experience, Taylor Johnson

Architecture Thesis Prep

The architecture of the supermarket and the landscape of food production, processing, distribution, and consumption it is situated within, further isolates the relationships consumers have with their food and routines. Investigating the intersection between socio-political, and economic constructs that shape the supermarket, the psychology of the interior constructs, and uses of spatial theory to frame architectural tactics of intervention, the thesis aims to embed a narrative subscript into the existing supermarket experience, to expand beyond its systemic constructs and user policies.

Collaborating With Catastrophe: The User's Guide To, Patricia Cafferky Dec 2015

Collaborating With Catastrophe: The User's Guide To, Patricia Cafferky

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis contends that the narrative nature of architecture gives it the potential to act as a jeremiad, taking the present day failings of society in the face of climate change and extrapolating out a potential future dystopia to instigate a critical dialogue and challenge the status quo. Here, architecture will act as a medium, as opposed to more typical literary works or photojournalism techniques which are usually associated with communicating social critique.
