Housing In Harlem: An Investment In The Future, Kelly J. Beaudreau

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I propose to demonstrate that a housing community in the spirit of the Modern Movement can be placed in Harlem so as to provide safe housing that gives a sense of identity to the residents and which will provide an urban link between Morningside Heights and Harlem so that Morningside Park will no linger pose a threat to the community."

Symbolism Versus Abstraction: Architectural Representation In A Post-Modern Society, Nina Ebbighausen Oct 1992

Symbolism Versus Abstraction: Architectural Representation In A Post-Modern Society, Nina Ebbighausen

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis poses an investigation into the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Mies van der Rohe as elements of a formal architectural tradition in Berlin; It proposes the institution of an architecture based up on a chosen set of historical models, with the aim of providing one possible foundation for architectural renewal (of unified Berlin) implying cultural continuity. To this end, the thesis poses an investigation into the representative qualities of architecture while examining the informative potential of artifact.

Master Of Architecture Ii - Thesis (Baltimore's Inner Harbor), Federico G. Beulcke Oct 1991

Master Of Architecture Ii - Thesis (Baltimore's Inner Harbor), Federico G. Beulcke

Architecture Master Theses

This project is interested in the chance to develop a project for a "Museum of the Bay" in Baltimore's Inner Harbor area. The building would contain a somewhat historical retrospective on what the Chesapeake Bay meant for the population living on its coast, focusing in particular on the docks area and its potential development.

The museum itself and the facilities that will naturally be tied to it will be generated by the use of some of the pre-existing structures, connected to a circulation system, and able to work as a starting point for the total recuperation of the area.

Montauk Transportation Center: The Train Station As Evidence Of The Duality That Exists Between Type And Prototype, Lisa Renee Eader

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intent of this thesis is to study and re-interpret an existing building type, and to develop conceptual strategies for a prototype. It will demonstrate the advantages of the prototype and how it can be used as a building block when dealing with specific site considerations. My conclusions drawn from these analyses will depict the evolution of, and develop a relationship between prototype and type."

The Roman Villa: An Investigation Of Typology, Timothy De Noble Oct 1991

The Roman Villa: An Investigation Of Typology, Timothy De Noble

Architecture Senior Theses

"The Roman villa is a distinct typology emerging from urban precedents which are transformed by site, programs, and constructional methods and materials in order to represent the Roman city. The reconstruction of Pliny's Laurentine villa, as described in his letter to Clusinius Gallus, provides the context for this investigation of typology and for an exploration of Pliny's urban reproposition...

This scenario allows the incorporation and transformation of typological elements as well as spatial comparisons relative to the chronology o Roman structural technology. The language of the villa reflects the actual materials of the Romans while their assembly necessarily reflects the …

Where Land And Water Meet, Mark N. Rhoades

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intention of this thesis is to study the waterfront typology, and how the interplay of land and water through the insertion of architectural elements, can reform a sense of place from the shattered urban fabric. The purpose of the waterfront fabric is twofold; to present a facade to the waterfront, and activate the waterfront while maintaining a relationship back to the fabric of the city."

Twin City Recreation Center for Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota

"I will investigate the linking of two cities through the introduction of an urban square and its continuity with an urban street, with an urban bridge between the cities, and with an urban park system,. The program for the square will be a recreation center for residents from both cities, thus creating a common urban place to reinforce the interdependent and cooperation of the two communities."

The Shaping Of Urban Place: The Didactic Museum And The Dialectic Between Art And Technology, Robert J. Corson Jan 1991

The Shaping Of Urban Place: The Didactic Museum And The Dialectic Between Art And Technology, Robert J. Corson

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The hypothesis being that the Museum as building type; as expressed through the ideals of the enlightenment, can shape urban place through the its form and content. The intent is to use this hypothesis to shape a significant urban place in Syracuse, NY. The premise being that Syracuse does not have a space that serves as a public forum. This is not intended to reflect the history of Syracuse, but deal with some of the architectural and social problems that currently exist."

Echoing The Sounds Of Time: Pennsylvania Station, Michael D. Wade Jr.

Architecture Senior Theses

The intent of my thesis is an investigation that will exist on two primary levels. The first level is an investigation of urban design and will deal with the development of a city within the city using a multi-programatic complex, as the vehicle. The second level is an investigation of a modern transformation of an existing typology using the primary piece of the complex, the railroad station, as the vehicle and will deal with attempting to re-establish the station and the idea or memory of travel and arrival as an important event within the fabric of the city.

The Huntington Mansion In New York: Economics Of Architecture And Decoration In The 1890s, Isabelle Hyman

The Courier

In 1889 railroad millionaire Collis P. Huntington (1821-1900) and his wife Arabella (d. 1924) purchased a large property on the southeast comer of New York's Fifth Avenue and Fifty-seventh Street, the most fashionable residential neighborhood of the period, and undertook to build there another of the great stone piles that constituted the habitats of the very rich during the city's Gilded Age. Aspects of the history of the Fifty-seventh Street Huntington mansion have been recounted, but supplementary information about its decoration and about the artists and craftsmen who embellished it can be found in the George Arents Research Library at …

Mutual Influence Between The United States Of America And Europe In The Field Of Modern Housing, Erhard Schütz May 1990

Mutual Influence Between The United States Of America And Europe In The Field Of Modern Housing, Erhard Schütz

Architecture Master Theses

This study represents a partial summary of the research that was conducted since 1985, beginning with a Fulbright Scholarship originally intended to investigate the American “roots” of modern housing and the work of architects of lesser prominence than the acknowledged “masters” such as Ferdinand Kramer, who had been a housing specialist of the “New Frankfurt” and who later came to the United States as a refugee. In the course of gathering material and discussing the findings, the field of investigation has widened, now addressing the development of modern housing in Europe, particularly in Germany, and in the United States of …

Building On The Edge: A Dialogue Between The Past And The Present; The Re-Excavation Of History In Our Modern Cities, Lance G. Vigil

Architecture Senior Theses

"The intent of this architectural thesis is to demonstrate that a new building intervention on the designated urban site will maintain the southern edge of the 'modern' twentieth century gridded city of Rome overlooking the 'ancient' city of the Forum. This edge, acting as a seam, will attempt to strengthen the relationship between these two urban conditions. The second half of this thesis will be to develop an articulated facade for this edge to create a modern building which responds not only to the buildings of the modern city, but also to the buildings of the ancient, or archaeological city …

University Of Rochester School For The Visual Arts, Gene Browning

Architecture Thesis Prep

"FORM - It is proposed that an art school can be designed like a small community, with facilities for the work, life, and leisure of the art student being brought together in a single location. The investigation, then, would be into what form this artists' community might take, looking to other community types as precedent.

PROGRAM - It is also proposed that an art school can be designed to accommodate both traditional art disciplines like drawing, painting, and sculpture, and newer art disciplines like computer graphics, photography, and film, in a harmonious mix of tradition and technology."
