Concrete Mix Design Using Simple Equations, Hakim Abdelgader, Ramadan Suleiman, Abdalla Adam, Jamal Khatib Dec 2020

Concrete Mix Design Using Simple Equations, Hakim Abdelgader, Ramadan Suleiman, Abdalla Adam, Jamal Khatib

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

The behaviour of concrete, whether fresh or hardened, depends basically on the behaviour of its components and the relationship between them, therefore, obtaining a concrete with certain properties depends fundamentally on the concrete mix design. Concrete mix design generally includes two main steps: 1-Selection of the main components suitable for the concrete (cement, aggregate, water, and additives); 2-Determination of more economical mix ratios to fulfil the workability, strength and efficiency requirements. Currently, there are many international methods locally approved for mix designs. They are all related to each other, they give relatively the same quantities of the mix components and …

Essential Control To Environmental Regulations For Oil And Gas Industry: Spotlight On Drilling Processes In Lebanon, Rami Harkouss Dec 2020

Essential Control To Environmental Regulations For Oil And Gas Industry: Spotlight On Drilling Processes In Lebanon, Rami Harkouss

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

At present, environmental legislation bounds the drilling operators in drilling wastes removal. The rapid increasing sensitivity of drilling waste management forced many countries to develop environmental guidelines for their drilling operations. This research studies some sorts of waste produced during upstream petroleum activities, particularly while drilling. After that, many hazards and impacts on the environment are addressed, as well as their principal treatment techniques. This paper gives a modest and theoretical vision over the present environmental standard and waste management design, realized at a universal scale. Studies show that performance fluid management and total fluid management are highly recommended in …

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Over the past three decades there has been a tremendous transformation in cultural heritage, both in terms of practices and in the understanding of cultural heritage. These changes are very much connected to wider changes in the very nature of culture and reflect major social and political transformation. They are also very much evident in the re-shaping of public space in more inclusive ways for diverse histories and experiences (Gerard Delanty). Furthermore, having cultural features in the public spaces of the cities contributes in bringing communities together and strengthening the local economy as well. Thence, enhancing heritage and innovations in …

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Since the earliest beginning of history, architectural fortresses have acquired varied forms and masses. It was possible to interpret justifications for using many of them; however, usage of some of these forms and masses is still considered as a perplexing mystery for scholars, analysts and interested persons in the topic of mass formulation in architecture. For example, the Giza Pyramids in Egypt which were built 4500 years ago, whose pyramidal mass, which was the output of several astronomic and mathematical relations in the pyramid form, the world is still till our present day analyzing the inherent ideas beyond them. Geometry is an essential design generator in the Islamic architectural style. Islamic styles are distinct for using the art of geometry in their creative designs. In the Islamic designs, geometry represents the order, harmony and beauty in calculations, scale and proportion. It clearly exists in the design of plans, façade, ornaments and patterns. It expresses many concepts of Islam such as the unity and the oneness of Allah, the perfection and the infinity of creation in the universe, the containments and the continuity. The main proportions of the Islamic style depend on the square proportions(ex: Islamic proportion 1:√2 (Williams, 2006), …

Re-Defining Vernacular Architecturein Third Millennium, Ibrahim Maarouf Oct 2020

Re-Defining Vernacular Architecturein Third Millennium, Ibrahim Maarouf

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

The key purpose of this paper concerns the definition of vernacular architecture in third millennium; a topic which gives the impression of confusion from the beginning when it was a word in the book of Rudofsky. In redefining this term, supplementary conceptual issue will need to be focused briefly and the role of classification will need to be more generally because of an inextricably linked between these two matters. It may seem strange to raise such a basic question again about "What is vernacular architecture?"; because, up till now, it needs to be addressed. There has been a major revitalization …

Adapting Merited And Award-Winning Buildingdspermitted Levels And Non-Negotiable Values: The Case Of The Library Of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt, Yasser Aref, Ayman G. Abdel Tawab

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

The practice of launching international architectural design competitions to key and important buildings in Egypt is not a new trend. Once built, those award-winning buildings usually undergo a modification process either by their owners or occupants. Owners or occupants always modify these buildings so that their performance would be adapted to certain local parameters. These modifications, however, may touch upon some of the original qualities that had donated those designs merits and recognitions at the time of their selection as prize winners. Many of these significant award-winning buildings might be considered as modern heritage resources, thus developing another layer of …

Re-Humanisation Of The Arab Citiesthe Case Of Alexandria, Egypt, Mohamed Atef Elhamy

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Urban revolution is bringing about a qualitative transform which can be linked to globalization of economy and of technologies. This in turn makes transformations to the “human face” of city. The traditional Islamic city, with its humanisation features, has a cultural, social, political, economic and ecological logic in terms of physical fabric, layout, and uses. This can provide a lesson for modern planning and design practices. Time has come to re-create the conditions that will restore to the metropolises of today their role as centers of cultural influence and democracy. Fight against intolerance, poverty, injustice, social and cultural exclusion, affirmation …

Towards Adaptive Reuse Of The Industrial Heritage In Minet El-Bassal District At Alexandria, Dina Mamdouh Nassar, Shahira Sharaf Eldin

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Industrial properties are functional buildings. They are not built to fulfill the aesthetic needs of their users or communities. In urban areas of large cities, they are unlikely to have the privilege of attracting kudos for the communities in which they are situated. In Egypt, and precisely in the metropolitan city of Alexandria, Minet El-Bassal district was once a famous Alexandrian Industrial district. It was built around 1810 overlooking the only seaport in Egypt at that time. It consisted of headquarters of international trading companies, large store-houses, workers housing and "the bourse de cotton" an international marketing center for Egyptian …

اللانمطية في الفراغات الداخلية (دراسة تحليلية للفراغات الداخلية في العمارة التفكيكية), ايمان صبري عبد اللطيف

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

The Politics Of Land-Use Conversion In The Peri-Urban Areas Of The Egyptian Cities, Tarek Saad Ragab

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Linkages of rural-urban structures, in both degrees of intensity and typology, are ever changing and consequently changing the interface of the Egyptian urban setting. The dynamics of the rural-urban interrelationships constantly generate different types of powers that have been manipulating the pattern of urban growth as much as articulating distortion and imbalances of the entire urban system. The attributes of the system inputs, for example the nature of land-use policy and tools, determine to a far extent the quality of the outputs that could be epitomized in the accomplishment of the developmental national objectives. On the other hand, expanding the …
