The State Of Community Design: An Analysis Of Community Design Center Services, Donovan Finn, Jason Brody Jan 2014

The State Of Community Design: An Analysis Of Community Design Center Services, Donovan Finn, Jason Brody

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Community design is a specific type practice rooted in participatory and emancipatory notions of planning and design to overcome environmental, social and economic injustice at low or no cost to the client. Since its beginnings in the early 1960’s, many of community design’s early and then-radical ideas have become more mainstream. In order to assess the state of modern community design, in comparison to its activist roots, this project reviews the websites of 81 community design centers in the United States to ascertain the approaches that centers use in order to successfully achieve operational goals. The research suggests that the …

Multicase Algorithm For Road Realignment Of Informal Settlements: An Application Using Axwoman Tm On Gis, Husam Khalil, Ayman Ismail, Salma Anas

Architectural Engineering

Slum area redevelopment is a complex phenomenon to handle. Conventional approaches usually prescribe physical modifications to infrastructure, deteriorated building, roads or services. The problem is that these modifications are usually applied to most informal settlements regardless of their uniqueness or individuality. As a result, these policies do not achieve noticeable accomplishments in tackling slum problems from its roots. On the contrary they act as a catalyst that expedites growth in their number and seriousness. This paper offers a new methodology that sets a multicase algorithm to assimilate slum areas in their surrounding by the realignment of their roads network based …

The Plots Of Alexanderplatz: A Study Of The Space That Shaped Weimar Berlin, Carrie Grace Latimer Jan 2014

The Plots Of Alexanderplatz: A Study Of The Space That Shaped Weimar Berlin, Carrie Grace Latimer

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper explores Alexanderplatz during the Weimar Period in Berlin. It is looked at from three different perspectives: historical urban plans, Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1980's film adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. Through these three mediums, an argument forms that Alexanderplatz functioned as both a major transit space for movement of transportation and pedestrians, but also the transit space for the movement of ideas and information.

Preserving The Historic Garden Suburb: Case Studies From London And New York, Jeffrey A. Kroessler

Publications and Research

The garden city or garden suburb was a response to the social and environmental ills of cities at the turn of the twentieth century. Letchworth Garden City, Hampstead Garden Suburb, and Welwyn Garden City were built outside London in the early 1900s, and each remains a highly desirable place of residence today. From the start, each was tightly regulated, and remains so a century later. By protecting the appearance and enhancing property values, the strict application of historic preservation principles contribute to the long-term sustainability of each place. Similar garden suburbs were built in the borough of Queens in New …

Evidence Led Forward Planning - The Case For Capacity Studies, Paul J. Lawlor Mr Dec 2013

Evidence Led Forward Planning - The Case For Capacity Studies, Paul J. Lawlor Mr

Articles

The 2010 Planning and Development Amendment Act requires Local Authorities to include core strategies in their development plans that demonstrate the location, quantum and phasing of development that is proposed to meet their future needs. However, the limited availability of usable data on the issues that enable development (such as land use, transport and open space) make it is difficult for Local Authorities to establish if (and how much) new development can be accommodated in designated areas. Noting that the National Spatial Strategy recommends the use of capacity studies to provide insights on future development scenarios in urban areas, this …

Reflections On Campus Planning: Lessons For Practice, William Riggs

City and Regional Planning

Planning is a diverse field with many different areas of professional practice. Campus planning, as opposed to traditional city planning, is one of these areas—different than traditional municipal, and having a unique requirements that are framed by jurisdictional, environmental, and physical planning needs of the respective institution.

Based on my experience in this role, planners need a flexible skillset that moves beyond the traditional role of processing permits and crafting zoning codes. They need to be deep thinkers and leaders who can adapt to changing situations and understand nuanced bureaucracy. By taking advantage of it, as well as other practical …

Revitalization Of Urban Alleys, Shusei Kakimoto

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

Alley revitalization is becoming more widely acknowledged as a viable urban redevelopment strategy in United States cities. Currently, most alleys in U.S. cities are underutilized, and they evoke a number of negative images—fearful places, waste-strewn, stinky, etc. The successful revitalization of alleys presents many benefits, such as economic development, enhanced walkability, visual enhancement, reduction of crime, etc. Revitalization of alleys leads to more productive and effective utilization of public space. In fact, cities in many countries have long utilized alleys as places where many aspects of ordinary daily life of the city take place. However, the potentials of alleys and …

Masters

Settlement Selection: A Critical Consideration for a New National Spatial Strategy Plan? This Dissertation examines both Central Statistics Office (CSO) published and unpublished demographic evidence from the 2011 and previous censuses, so as to evaluate the 2002 National Spatial Strategy’s (NSS) selection of Gateways and Hub settlements. On its own, population is an incomplete measure of size. However, when used with emerging employment data, a robust methodological time-dynamic centrality model may be constructed based on population and Daytime Working Population (DWP) behaviour and other related and relevant investigations. The Model compares unpublished 2002 data of the NSS Plan with similar …

Confused Spaces: Theatricality As A Device For Defining Different Types Of Public Space, Danton Christopher Spina

Master's Theses

Confused Spaces has come to the conclusion that theatricality can be a device for defining different types of public space. This book aims to define theatricality in architectural terms by taking principles from the disciplines of theater and urban design. It limits the scope of the definition to a specific set of elements of theatricality that include spectacle, transition, flexibility, and compactability. After attempting to define why these elements of theatricality are valid architectural concepts, the text then pushes to understand the experience that these elements can create. Through the use of historical and contemporary references, an argument for theatricality …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Urban arterials are characterized by frequent intersections. Queue length and delay are the two primary measures of performance of intersection. These measures play a primary role in determining the arterial performance. This article presents a methodology to determine the number of vehicles in queue at a signalized intersection for under saturated traffic conditions. The results obtained were validated using actual values that are manually extracted. The root-mean-square error is of the range 1.3 vehicles for estimation of number of vehicles in queue. The various aspects that have to be considered in accurate estimation of performance measures are also discussed.
