Housing Choices Of Myanmar Migrants Working In The Central Business District Of Bangkok, Hsu Yee Win
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urban migrant workers play a vital role in the economic growth of a country. As housing is a fundamental human need that greatly impacts individual and societal well-being, it is crucial to ensure the welfare of urban migrant workers. While several studies have explored the factors that influence urban migrants' housing choices, limited attention has been paid to the spatial distribution of housing and housing choices among urban migrant workers in Thailand. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the housing locations and determinants of housing choices among Myanmar migrants working in the Central Business District (CBD) of …

The Relationship Between The Land And Buildings Tax Act, B.E. 2562 (A.D. 2019), And The Land Use And Land Cover (Lulc) Of Bangkok, Thailand, James Anthony Orina
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Land and Buildings Tax Act, B.E. 2562 (A.D. 2019), was enacted in Thailand with the aim of wealth distribution, revenue increase, and discouraging unproductive land use. However, since its implementation in 2020, in Bangkok, a notable increase in land use and land cover (LULC) changes, specifically vacant lands being converted to agricultural lands, has been observed. These changes are hypothesized to be related to tax avoidance activities. This study aims to investigate the phenomenon of vacant-to-agricultural land conversions in Bangkok and employ spatial analysis techniques to identify and locate these LULC changes. By employing a statistical t-test and conducting …

Assessing The Potential Of Developing An Ecosystem For Electric Scooters In Bangkok, Thailand, Rosyad Yan Wibowo
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The rising need for mobility induces challenges to providing a sustainable mode of transportation. The absence in providing door-to-door service by public transportation gives the opportunity for micromobility to take a position. With millions of people commuting every day, Thailand's capital city requires more choices in transportation. E-scooters can travel short distances in a vehicle and are not affected by traffic. However, under the current regulation, e-scooters are not recognized as a mode of transportation in Bangkok which question the existence of the ecosystem of e-scooters in the city. To address the problems, this research focuses on exploring the potential …

Motor vehicle crashes are one of our nation's most serious social, economic and health issues. They are the leading cause of death among children and young adults, killing approximately 1.35 million people each year. Providing a safe and efficient transportation system is the primary goal of transportation engineering and planning. To help reduce traffic fatalities and injuries on roadways, crash prediction models are used to forecast the injury severity of potential crashes and apply precautionary countermeasures accordingly. Most of these models are reactive as they use historical crash data to categorize crash-related factors. Recently, advancements have been made in developing …

Dissertations
This dissertation examines four urban ecological restoration projects used as public spaces in the city of Xi'an, China. The overall goal is to understand the social and ecological implications of the site features at both design and planning scale and define what is ecological restoration in China's urban context. The result of the research shows that the top-down planning initiatives approach for establishing ecological restoration sites in urban areas that meet the need for more public open space in addition to restoring healthy urban ecological systems is very different from the definition of what is traditionally understood as "ecological restoration". …

Reconstruction And Rebuilding Stability Of Post Conflict Societies: Economic And Security Interests Or Sustainable Development?, Jihad Al-Ayasa
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This critical review shed light on the problem of applying the model of reconstruction and stability building of Germany and Japan after World War II on geopolitically and culturally different cases, such as Iraq and Afghanistan as post war contexts; and probably the same model will be applied to different post war contexts, such as Syria, Yemen, Libya and others. The study discussed the reasons why the model of reconstructing Iraq and Afghanistan failed compared to the successful model that was applied in Germany and Japan. Grounding on previous literature and theoretical frameworks, the study developed a new model that …

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
Creating a more sustainable urbanism is among the most pressing issues facing the world. Social sustainability is often overlooked as a pillar of sustainable urbanism. A cohesive community, a core component of social sustainability, is an essential social resource in developing a fundamental unit of sustainable urbanism. Social cohesion has the ability to help communities navigate and overcome crisis, a quality of a cohesive neighborhood that has been brought to the forefront during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the urban planning and design literature provides insights into the role of physical form in social cohesion more research is still needed. …

Interstate 11: The Road To Prosperity In Nevada, Arthur C. Nelson
Policy Briefs and Reports
Interstate 11 (I-11) offers Nevada a unique opportunity to advance the economic development prospects of one of the state’s most economically challenged areas: Elko and eastern Nevada. Although the state used a qualitative system to choose a western route for I-11, this process may not have considered fully the costs of extending I-11 to Canada in a cost-effective manner or in a manner consistent with I-11 purposes, especially avoiding congested areas. This briefing report reviews the history and purposes of I-11; summarizes the I-11 route options; considers how I-11 might extend to Canada in a way that is consistent with …

Hurricanes And Housing: Highlighting The Ongoing Impact Of Hurricane Michael And The Post-Disaster Housing Problem, Mary Beth Barr
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hurricanes impact individuals and communities on many levels - emotional, physical, mental, financial - to name a few. Every time a hurricane occurs, lives are drastically altered forever. One of the ways that hurricanes impact individuals and communities most powerfully is through the effect that they have on housing. Unleashing uncontrollable damage to infrastructure and the built environment, hurricanes exacerbate housing problems that exist and create new ones where they did not exist before. Hurricane Michael, which catastrophically impacted the Florida Panhandle in 2018, is a case study in which the impact that hurricanes have on housing is prevalent.

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
As rural communities explore new ways to stimulate growth and development in their place, one of the biggest challenges they face is reinventing what rural community development is and has been. The conventional way of thinking goes communities must attract new businesses to attract new workers to grow a community’s population. However, population growth and industry attraction are not always equivalent to progress, especially not in rural communities. For decades, rural communities have withstood the boom and bust of industry and economy, whether it be agricultural, industrial, manufacturing, etc. These industries and more have demanded the extraction of rural communities’ …

This project studies demographic changes and emerging patterns of spatial concentration of the Latinx community in the Greater New Orleans area during the last two decades. I am developing a concept of …
