The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog
The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens caused the bathymetry of Spirit Lake to change drastically, resulting in an increase in surface area and a decrease in average depth. Subsequently, Spirit Lake is experiencing an increase in productivity. This analysis examines concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus obtained from sediment samples collected over the summer of 2010, as well as aquatic plant height data, in order to identify sources of the lake’s increasing productivity. The results of these analyses will be used as part of a larger nutrient cycling model examining changes in the lake over time.

Depression In Pierce County, K.D. Carlyle
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:This project was thought up through my interest in Psychology. Since I cannot actually map physical locations of where depression comes from, I was interested in possible demographics that could cause (not always does) depression. I was able to compile a list of contributing demographics through a literature review. Through my literature review, demographics that were highlighted were that of socioeconomic status or social standing (class). Those with a lower SES were more likely than those who had a higher SES for depression. The purpose of this research was to be able to identify areas within Pierce County that …

Ideal Apartments For International Students In University Of Washington, Tacoma, Sing Wong
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:
Beginning a new journey as an international student in a foreign country is no easy task, the same story applies to the international students in University of Washington, Tacoma. Yet, due to current inadequate supply of student housing units and the lack of a domestic host family housing program, international students in UW, Tacoma face even harsher challenges when looking for a place to live. Without many options, most international students would, therefore, choose to rent apartment units that are within reasonable proximity to the campus and other amenities as their homes. However, many international students might be unfamiliar …

Making The Invisible Visible: A Geospatial History Of The Japanese-American Community In Tacoma, Washington 1888 To 1942, Judith A. Jones
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:Prior to World War II, the urban core area of Tacoma, Washington served as the hub of a culturally rich Japanese-American community. Beginning in the late 1880’s, the booming railroad, timber, and agriculture industries attracted workers to this region, including many Japanese immigrants. Tacoma’s “Japantown” or Nihon Machiencompassed the area between 11thand 19thStreets and Pacific and Tacoma Avenues. Japantownexperienced its zenith between 1900 and 1920. After 1920, “it began a slow decline, culminating with the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II” (Morrison 2, 41,42). This once culturally dynamic area is now in need of recognition and preservation. The …

Youth Perspectives On Community Assets And Geography In Puyallup, Wa, Nathan Stueve
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:Youth poses a perspective of their communities that is unique, but not always acknowledged. The goal of this project was to examine how teenage residents in suburban Puyallup, WA perceive their surroundings. Some theoretical assumptions exist in background literature on this issue. Firstly, planners often design communities to prevent youth from engaging in deconstructive activities, not to allow them to engage in constructive activities. As a result, communities are often designed with fewer youth-oriented assets and venues. Fewer youth-oriented places to travel to will cause teens to be less physically active. In addition, youth perceptions of access to these …

GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction: The Tacoma Business Improvement Area was established in 1988 and is a not-for-profit organization with a 501(c)(4) status (Tacoma BIA, 2010). The boundary encompasses an 84 block radius in the Downtown Tacoma Area including 502 parcels. The BIA is dependent on taxation from business owners within the area, and functions under the direction of a board of directors also known as the Local Development Council (Tacoma BIA, 2010). The organization operates to improve property values, decrease crime, and clean the streets of trash. The overall purpose of this research is to test the hypothesis that the BIA increases property …

Assessing Senior Citizen Livability In Dyes Inlet Neighborhoods: Elder Livability Index And Walkable Bus Stops, Garrett Jackson
GIS Certificate Projects
Introduction:The aim of this project is to suggest to local officials where social services for elders would best be applied and also to act as an assistive tool for seniors seeking residence in neighborhoods where high levels of livability are experienced. This analysis is based on the assertion that the location, age, and condition of one’s home can be an indicator to whether an individual possesses the assets and advantages needed toage successfully. As of 2009 there were 112 million households in the United States and a full 23% contained a resident 60 years of age or older (Pynoos …
