Since Quranic inscriptions dominate the epigraphic decoration of Cairene Islamic religious monuments, the target of this thesis has been to investigate the Quranic inscriptions of some selected religious monuments of each main era of the Islamic history of Cairo: Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman. The questions examined are the following: what was the frequency of utilizing Quranic inscriptions compared to other types of inscriptions? What are the common architectural locations of Quranic quotations compared to other types of inscriptions? This volume presents the results of the 1979 excavations at the site of Efrata, a hill on the Hebron–Jerusalem road. On the summit is a tumulus, and burial grounds of shaft tombs on the slopes were in use during the Intermediate Bronze Age (IBA) and Middle Bronze Age II (MB II). The hill was apparently an isolated cemetery intensively used by semi-nomadic pastoralists. The shaft tombs were first hewn during IBA, and after a short gap (MB I), reused in MB II. The pottery and small finds are presented, and analysis of the human remains indicates that the burials in …

This multi-level site in the Ḥula Valley revealed a rare pre- and proto-historic sequence extending from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (PPNB), through the Pottery Neolithic period (PN), until it was finally abandoned in the Early Bronze Age II; it was again occupied during medieval times. The abundant water resources were the probable reason for the continued settlement here, despite the difficulties presented by the marshy environment.

The settlements were apparently small villages based on simple agriculture and husbandry throughout their existence, representing local variations of the known cultures of the various periods. The Chalcolithic settlement shows affinities with the Golan …

This volume presents the results of the 1993 excavations in two towers at the impressive medieval ‘Al-Subayba (Nimrod) fortress in the Golan Heights, on the southern slopes of Mt. Hermon. It was built by the Ayyubids in the 13th century with the purpose of guarding a major access route to Damascus against armies coming from the west. It was later rebuilt as a palace and mosque by the Mamluks, and finally destroyed by an earthquake. The excavations cleared Tower 11 to facilitate the exit route to the postern gate. The history and building technology of the fortress are discussed.

The town of Korazim is of special interest to Christendom, and thus was frequently mentioned by scholars and travelers to the Holy Land. The identification of Korazim with Khirbat Karazeh is now almost universally accepted. The site was extensively surveyed and excavated in 1962–1964, under the direction of Ze’ev Yeivin on behalf of the Department of Antiquities. Based on these excavations, the layout of the town and the setting of the synagogue within it could be elucidated. In 1980­–1987, excavations at the site were resumed, during which some 30 probes were carried out in the synagogue and its vicinity.

The excavations at Ḥorbat Rosh Zayit were conducted following the survey of the Lower Galilee, as part of the Lower Galilee regional project, by Zvi Gal. The site’s full significance was only revealed in the excavations, which have contributed much data that enable the presentation of an historical-geographical synthesis. This thesis addresses the archaeological question of the relationship between city planning and belief systems. It examines the extent to which the city plan of Nauvoo, Illinois, was influenced by the four precepts of Zion as outlined by Joseph Smith, the first President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These precepts are considered as unity, order, economic equality, and leadership. The City of Zion plan as developed by Joseph Smith was the basis for many cities, including Nauvoo. During the survey of the caves in the Jericho area, Cave No. 13 revealed a uniquely well-preserved burial dating to the early 4th millennium BCE, accompanied by burial goods that have rarely been preserved elsewhere, due to the conditions of the cave. The middle-aged male buried together with a unique flint knife anda wooden bow and arrows, among other gifts, was termed the “Warrior”, although he may have been a hunter rather than warrior. In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …

Following surveys and excavations in the area of the Rephaim Valley, within the framework of the Rephaim Valley Project, the valley was revealed to have been densely settled throughout the ages. The aims of the project were to document neglected archaeological remains such as villages, terraces and stone mounds––their chronology, ancient handicrafts and industries––and to attempt to view the overall settlement patterns in the area. This volume presents the excavations at Manaḥat.

The Latter-day Saint settlements in southeastern Utah, namely Bluff, Monticello and Blanding, were impacted by the physical and cultural geography of the area. These geographic elements hindered, and in some cases prevented, the Latter-day Saint colonizers from fulfilling the seven basic principles of Latter-day Saint expansion and colonization in the Great Basin. The impacts of physical geography were the geology, the climate, the soil and the rivers and streams. Large-scale excavations at the site of Yiftaḥ’el in Lower Galilee, revealed four strata: Strata IV–III representing a late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (or PPNC) settlement, with some evidence of agriculture; some ephemeral remains of ‘pre-Stratum II’ phase consisting of pottery that can be equated with early Pottery Neolithic wares; Stratum II representing an extensive, well-preserved ‘Early Northern EB I’ village of curvilinear buildings with an apparent emphasis on husbandry; and Stratum I comprising a rather enigmatic phase that could fall within EB I, MB I or MB II.

There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to the educational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations.
