Historical Edge Assessment: Spatial Comparative Analysis, Nabil Mohareb
Historical Edge Assessment: Spatial Comparative Analysis, Nabil Mohareb
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This paper develops a quantitative analysis method that is capable of examining the urban edges of historic cities with reference to their spatial configuration. This aim provides the opportunity for assessing the current situation of historic urban edges. Accordingly, this assessment will help in developing appropriate regeneration plans for the site. Second, it enhances the process of comparison with other cases, in order to inherit those successful interventions that might fit according to base similarities, such as the spatial configuration, architectural characteristics, or other features, in addition, searching for any repetitive patterns. Assessing the current situation requires the evaluation of …

Spatial Learning Landscape (Sll) In The Campus Of The Digital Age, Marwa Charkas
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Values controlling campus articulation are mainly rooted in the 'Connectivity' value. Its interpretation exceeds just the physical connections inside the campus to the wider links between the academia and the society. The digital age has thoughtful impacts on the way that every aspect of the life is performing. The campus' shaping values have changed considerably and the connectivity came at the heart of these changes. The way the students are connected to each other's, to their tutors, and even to the place is replaced. In addition, this technological revolution has profoundly wedged the business domain, restructuring the linkage between academia …
Encapsulating Educational Design For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lauren Praeuner
Encapsulating Educational Design For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lauren Praeuner
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This paper is a thesis/creative project hybrid split into two parts. First, it examines different aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the symptoms experienced by those on the spectrum, and the guidelines that parents, medical professionals, and educators should follow to ensure a holistic approach to the care and education of children with autism. The text also notes some of the considerations that designers should review when designing educational facilities for these individuals, as well as few precedents that successfully do so. The second part of the paper presents my team’s architectural studio project, contributed to by UNL students Lindsay …
Identifying And Positively Addressing Real And Perceived Barriers To Inclusion In Construction, Lisa Breitenfield
Identifying And Positively Addressing Real And Perceived Barriers To Inclusion In Construction, Lisa Breitenfield
The Professional Constructor
The construction industry is facing difficulties in recruiting and training new skilled workers. My essay will identify some methods companies and the AGC can use to attract new employees. Some potential solutions involve encouraging schools to expose students to the construction industry, recognizing and assisting working parents with childcare issues, companies offering employees personalized career advancement schedules, and recruiting students focused on the arts and history for detail oriented roles in the industry. The Associated General Contractors can help by advising individual companies on attracting employees and facilitate greater mentorship programs between companies and educational institutions.

The employee assessment process (EAP) is a formal evaluation system used by an employer to evaluate employee’s performance and behavior within a company. The objective of this paper is to determine the current state of the most common used practices for EAP in the construction industry; specifically in Southeast United States. Existing literature was reviewed to understand the historical context and the current documentation of existing EAP processes in other industries and within the construction industry. Literature revealed that there is no formal standardized process documented for EAP practice within the United States construction industry. Based on the literature findings …

Over the past several years small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have gained popularity in the private sector. Recent studies have shown an increasing interest from state DOTs in the U.S. for the use of drone technology. However, most of the studies did not fully investigate the depth of program integration or application. This study combines the findings of recent studies to identify state DOTs with the most extensive sUAS operational experience. The drone champions for the six states identified, were interviewed to gain substantive insight regarding program initiation and organization, the spectrum of agency use, perceived benefits, and the DOT’s …
Increasing Diversity And Inclusion Through Mentoring Underrepresented Groups, Corban Williams
Increasing Diversity And Inclusion Through Mentoring Underrepresented Groups, Corban Williams
The Professional Constructor
The Construction Industry historically has struggled to gain traction with underrepresented groups, such as women, African-Americans, and the Hispanic/ Latinx community. To combat this, industry-wide action is necessary to increase diversity and inclusion. Underrepresented communities have misconceptions about the construction industry including a lack of knowledge about the wide range of possible careers. By the AGC establishing a mentoring program with career goals and psychological attributes for grades 6-12 and college students, a positive dialog about the industry would be established. Visibility and promotion of the program would encourage students of underrepresented communities to consider a career in the construction …

The Professional Constructor
The construction industry is rapidly growing and contractors are optimistic about the immediate and long-term growth of the industry. As demand increases, the construction industry faces a projected labor shortage crisis. As the construction industry grows, it must rise to meet the challenge of solving this labor shortage by diversifying and widening its labor pool and strategically attracting new talent. This essay offers a detailed solution that includes a redefinition of approaches to diversity, ideas for short-term policies and creative long-term policies, and a lasting vision for the industry that will guide us to continue growing progressively and avoiding crises …

The Professional Constructor
There is a documented demand for an educated construction management workforce. To help meet this demand, construction education programs at numerous post-secondary institutions have established objectives and goals to recruit, train, and graduate high-quality students; and, many of these programs are charged with providing educational opportunities to students who have been traditionally underserved in higher education (e.g., female, minority, first generation students, etc.). This study compared the enrollment and retention rates, interdepartmental migration patterns, and student satisfaction and graduation success outcomes of undergraduate students enrolled in a CM program at a public university as a means of identifying trends and …
Beauty For Ashes: Reflections On Aesthetic Experience And Suffering, Douglas Gilmour
Beauty For Ashes: Reflections On Aesthetic Experience And Suffering, Douglas Gilmour
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
In this essay, I examine the relationship between aesthetic experience and suffering, and I specifically explore how and why the former can potentially serve to meliorate the severity of the latter. Of course, that art and beauty can provide a certain measure of comfort and healing to the afflicted is a universally acknowledged truth; however, the reasons why this should be so could be considered an equally universal mystery. “I feel we understand too little about the psychology of loss,” writes Arthur Danto, “to understand why the creation of beauty is so fitting a way of marking it.” By exploring …

There is no doubt that there is a close relationship between health problems and housing conditions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates in developing countries those 2 million early and unexpected deaths, with close to half occurring among children less than 5 years old die from indoor air pollution and bad housing. Housing is an important determinant of health, and substandard housing is a major public health issue. Designing and bad orientation of housing are found to have significant effects on poor respiratory health especially in children, and increase an infectious disease thereby putting them at higher risk …

Architectural Renovation Of Stadiums As A New Vision For Sustainability Case Study (Renovation Of Castelão Arena Stadium, Brazil & Soldier Field Stadium, Chicago), Sherif Khashaba, Ghada Rehan
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
By reviewing the current situation of some existing stadium buildings, many stadiums are not applicable to sustainability requirements, with the absence of the required principles in this field, where sustainability is considered now as one of the important current trends. Rehabilitation of existing Buildings considers a crucial contributor to most sustainable development aspects. It is a starting point for the redevelopment which promotes social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Both FIFA and UEFA support the need for sustainable stadiums. They set out some of the objectives which can achieve sustainability in stadiums. These objectives include efficient use of energy, …

Achieving human comfort in a space is an architectural necessity. Feeling comfort is related to the sense organs network, such as the eyes, ears, nose, tactile sensors, heat sensors and brain. In fact, last few decades has witnessed the integration of many technologies and trends into the field of responsive architecture; among which kinetic architecture has been significant. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to achieve visual comfort in educational spaces in universities, while arguing that a responsive kinetic skin is to be an effective mean for achievement. That should help refreshing student and enhancing their educational spaces visually, …

Forward To Enhancing Informal Transportation Stations In Crowded Cities, Mary Felix, Mostafa Elhefnawi
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
By observing the planning of developing countries, it is clear that there are several factors that affect the movements and behaviors of transportation. One of these behaviors is the appearance of informal transportation modes, which move along certain paths to fulfil citizens’ needs. The phenomenon of informal transportation modes appears due to a lack of formal transportation modes existing, or a weakness in planning that does not consider the users’ needs or community behavior. This paper focuses on the location of informal transportation stops, which affect transportation movements and traffic jams, by observing and documenting the location and facilities of …

Carbon Neutral Urban Spaces Under Climate Change Case Study: Renovation Of Sidi Gaber Neighborhood In Alexandria, Egypt, Abdel Aziz Farouk Mohamed
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
With growing pressure from the public on governments and organizations to address climate change, the term ‘carbon neutral’ has become increasingly used in recent years. Carbon neutral is an emerging definition that relates to measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon energy used by either a building or an organization as a whole. Buildings are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions when they operated by fossil fuel energy resources. Sustainable urban development is essential issue to enhance the quality of life of city residents and to decrease the negative impact of conventional type of energy through using the renewable energy resources. …

The Impact Of Changes In Beirut Urban Patterns On The Microclimate: A Review Of Urban Policy And Building Regulations, Hiba Mohsen, Rokia Raslan, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Previous studies conducted on Beirut have historically overlooked research in the field of urban microclimate. A better understanding of how Beirut urban development, including zoning and building regulations, has affected the current urban thermal climate is crucial in order to analyse how different factors have led to the structure of the city, including the quality of urban space and the degradation of its natural environment. Within the context of limited government capability to set out strategies for sustainable urban development, this paper examines the historical evolution of the Lebanese building regulations specifically in Beirut and investigates the impact of changes …

“Health and wellbeing”, buzzword of the era! Whether the term is revolutionizing the way people think about buildings or not is still under investigation. Nevertheless, it certainly explores how design, operations and behaviors within the places where we live, work, learn and play can be optimized to advance human health and wellbeing. Knowing that the term has the possibility of being applied to different scales and arenas, this research focuses on the scale of university campuses. Numerous studies have revealed that university campuses could play a substantial role in boosting the innovation within communities and reinforcing the mission of developing …

Language is a living organism that gets born, develops and multiplies. It is either meant to survive and regenerate whenever needed and necessitated, or to fall into inertia and stagnancy, and then to perish and evanesce. Undoubtedly, this is all directly linked to the ability of its speakers, and to their constant quest to vividly express their culture, thoughts, behaviors, beliefs and other life matters, fortifying, thus, their existence and upholding their presence in this world. The Arabic language has been and continues to be the language that refuses to age, and declines to stand still, unless this pleases its …

Myth played a principal role in old agricultural and pre-agricultural societies. The mythical thought has developed throughout the years but we got only the last versions of texts that have been recorded after being developed, though we approximately received their final version. The myth is a literary text which authors were the temples priests at that time. Its role is to determine the origins of the community’s vision towards the existence and the contribution of the society in this vision based upon a metaphysical belief scope. Thus, the text should express human feelings towards its problems on its cultural part. …

When he wrote his very first play, Willy Protagoras enfermé dans les toilettes, Wajdi Mouawad was only 23 years old. In this tragedy, he talks about freedom’s right, and wonders about the limits that society builds around that liberty. In this play, the nicest apartment of the building is divided between two families that have complicated relations between love and hate. One day, Nelly decides to leave this masquerade, while her brother, Protagoras, locks himself into the toilets and forbids anyone to enter. He refuses to listen to his parents, to negotiate with the squatters or to deal with the …

Pascal Quignard's novel All the World's Mornings is the fictional biography of a seventeenth-century musician, Jean de Sainte Colombe. The famous violist lives a life of recluse and devotion to music. A young violinist, Marin Marais, asks him to help him perfect his art, but the teacher and the disciple share opposite views about music. Marin Marais discovers the glory in Versailles while Sainte Colombe sinks more and more into solitude. However, the two men end up being reunited when the disciple finally discovers the true meaning of the music. Through his writings, Quignard represents two Baroque arts; music and …

The historical evolution of the African continent was not smooth; the region experienced many upheavals including two powerful traumas that are slavery and colonialism. It is therefore not surprising that African writers, who are mainly inspired by the world around them, revisit History to write their novels. Among them, the Guinean writer Tierno Monénembo. The writer sheds the light on the history that has painfully shaken his continent, West Africa more precisely. His novels translate the almost obsessive concern to narrate the story of the African continent. We propose to study two of his novels: The king of Kahel (2008) …

The current French literature is experiencing a tremendous renewal in all areas. At the beginning of the 21st century we are witnessing a great tendency of writing about oneself. This has created novel forms such as autofiction. The term is invented by Serge Doubrovsky in 1977. It is presented as a new version of the autobiography which takes as its subject the individual story of the subject of writing. There is a certain permeability between autobiography and autofiction. It is the fictional side of narrated events that differentiates between the two genres. Sorj Chalandon's novel 'Profession of the Father' (winner …
