Climate Change: An Alarm Raised By Marguerite Yourcenar In Souvenirs Pieux And Its Psychological Répercussions, Yvette Nasr
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
An alarming situation Although climate change is a natural element, it does not pass without impacting man in all his dimensions, man being part of the ecosystem. Food is becoming increasingly unhealthy according to FAO, which calls for sustainable diets that respect biodiversity, thus making it possible to optimize natural resources. (FAO, Biodiversity and sustainable diets, 2010) Socially, increasingly desertic, the climate contributes to leaving the land to go to the city. However, another much more subtle dimension of man is affected: the psychological one. Research areas Psychology shows the adverse effects of climate change on human behavior in terms …

Impact Of Global Warming On The Mental Health And Social Aspect Of Human Beings., Emilie Chammas Fiani
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Climate change, generally involving slow and gradual changes in the environment, including rising temperatures, presents a considerable impact not only on the ecosystem, but also on society and the mental health of human beings, such as communication and human relationships as well as negative emotion, stress, anxiety and depression... Indeed, rising temperatures lead to serious social and psychological impacts, especially among people already suffering from mental problems, particularly psychosis, or suffering from dementia or even addiction, who risk falling into illness or even dying during intense heat waves. In addition, beyond depression or stress, the functioning of our brain and …

Climate And Catastrophe In "The Shipwrecked Of The Deluge" By Christian Labori, Mireille El Hajjar
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Climate change is one of the most pressing and complex challenges humanity faces today. Over the decades, our planet has undergone significant climate transformations, largely attributed to human activity. Massive emissions of greenhouse gases, unchecked deforestation, and other anthropogenic practices have disrupted the delicate balance of our climate, resulting in disastrous consequences on a global scale. Signs of climate change are increasingly evident, with extreme weather events, rising sea levels, changes in precipitation patterns, and alterations to ecosystems. These impacts affect all regions of the globe, threatening food security, biodiversity, water resources, and human health. Thus, the need to take …

Of Ecological Identity In Literature Humus By Gaspard Koenig, Christelle Stephan Hayek
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
« In 1978, William Rueckert, retired professor of English and American literature at the State University of New York at Geneseo, published an article entitled "Literature and Ecology. An Experiment in Ecocriticism" where the word ecocriticism was used for the first time. » (Posthumus, 2017, p. 161) This is how appeared a discipline which, over the decades, has gained in insight and relevance, and whose true theoretical foundations were finally laid by Professor Lawrence Buell, in his work The Environmental Imagination, published in 1995. BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Apocalyptic, without utopia, the world, as described in La Compagnie des glaces, volumes 15 and 16 by G-J Arnaud (1983), is covered in ice, the origin of which is the anthropocene and capitalocene ecological crisis. These two series belong to the cli-fi genre, a neologism coined by Dan Bloom, and they are part of 98 episodes written by the author about her. Our purpose in this article is to study the new order that the climate crisis has engendered, an order because this world, which resembles our own, is governed by the Ice Companies that lay the railroads, which have …

Supporting Social Equity Through Informal Spaces On An Urban Campus, Eve B. Klein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation focuses on applying research to design in the setting of higher education. Specifically, it explores the informal spaces outside the classroom at a predominantly Black college in an urban setting. The existing structural challenges facing college students are many, including issues related to financial resources, mental health/wellness, family responsibilities, psychosocial identity formation, and structural racism. These challenges were compounded by the events of the spring of 2020, when a heightened awareness of anti-Black racism, combined with the hardships of COVID-19, brought college campuses to a close and masses of people to the streets to protest the unjust killings …

Utah and the greater Intermountain West are experiencing a water crisis. Many factors are contributing to this situation, including an arid climate exacerbated by climate change, rapid population growth, and a high-water-demanding landscape typology. Landscapes currently consume an estimated 60-80% of Utah’s potable water, representing a significant opportunity for water savings. However, changing the traditional water-dependent landscape typology requires educating the public regarding water-wise landscape design processes, best practices, and implementation approaches. Utah State University is the land grant university for Utah and home to one of the oldest Landscape Architecture departments in the Intermountain West. Utah State University’s community …

Utah State University (USU) offers a successful Introduction to Landscape Architecture class for college students; this class increases awareness and understanding of landscape architecture as a profession. Though this is a wonderful resource offered at the college level, high school is a key time for career awareness. Unfortunately, there is a lack of student awareness surrounding the profession of landscape architecture. In Utah and the rest of the United States, there are currently no in-person Introduction to Landscape Architecture classes available in a high school setting to increase awareness and understanding for students in a high school setting. Providing a …

One of the key benefits of a Cal Poly education is access to experienced instructors in a small classroom setting. In my final quarter at Cal Poly, I had the opportunity to glance behind the curtain and fill the significant shoes of an instructor of an introductory structural statics class. What initially was a chance to lend a hand to the department by sharing my limited experience turned into a thorough exploration of what it means to be productively engaging and of how to utilize the underrealized power of asking questions in the classroom setting. This report documents my experiences …
