The Influence Of British Culture On The Advance Of Modern Architecture In The United Kingdom, Shannon K. Holt Jan 2005

The Influence Of British Culture On The Advance Of Modern Architecture In The United Kingdom, Shannon K. Holt

Honors Program Theses

Through exploring literature, conducting on-site observations and living in London, I have examined these questions with respect to the history of Modem architecture and Britain's respective role in it, the history of Britain and of their urban planning and architectural needs, the introduction of the Modem style and the subsequent backlash, the influence of the Prince of Wales, and the direct influence of the culture itself. I have attempted to analyze both the history, the present, and to speculate on the future of the Modem movement in the United Kingdom.

Unearthing Threshold, Maggie L. Cookman Dec 2004

Unearthing Threshold, Maggie L. Cookman

Architecture Senior Theses

In addition to responding to its immediate physical context, architectural form has the capacity to reveal and celebrate history, promoting an understanding of the relationship of site and region to historic conditions no longer in their original form. Within the built environment, architecture has an inherent ability to influence the experience and perception of historical relationships. This can be achieved through prescribed interactions with the constructed form, beginning before one enters the building, and continuing through the program. The exterior begins to engage the visitor through both site and facade. The building itself, as well as its response to physical …

National Identity And The British Empire : The Image Of Saint Paul’S Cathedral, Rebecca Pierce

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper considers the historical geography of place and identity construction through the case of English Nationalism and the British Empire as encapsulated in London’s Saint Paul’s Cathedral. The research explores several themes: 1) the British Empire’s use of Saint Paul’s Cathedral as a representation, both physically and symbolically, of the ideals and power of the empire; 2) the British Empire’s employment of the Cathedral as the emotional and ideological center of national identity and imperialism in the English population; and 3) the British Empire's manipulation of the image of Saint Paul’s Cathedralas a national and religious landmark. Data analysis …

Spatial Negotiations In A Commercial City: The Red Sea Port Of Mocha, Yemen During The First Half Of The Eighteenth Century, Nancy Um Jun 2003

Spatial Negotiations In A Commercial City: The Red Sea Port Of Mocha, Yemen During The First Half Of The Eighteenth Century, Nancy Um

Art History Faculty Scholarship

The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. Drawing on contemporary Arabic chronicles, archival European trade documents, historical photographs, and field work in the city, it documents the conspicuous absence of a network of public trade structures, like the urban khan, the expected locus for trade in an Arab city …

The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection, Jonathan Boelkins Jan 2003

The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection, Jonathan Boelkins

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Complex in its cultural significance and entanglements, the Vietnam War is an event that continues to reverberate with social dissonance. The Vietnam Memorial (Maya Lin) sustains multiple, often oppositional, debates surrounding the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection examines the significance of the memorial with regard to American cultural history. The physical experience of the memorial-the decisive yet subtle geometry, the polished black marble, the chronological listing of names, and the scarring of the ground plane-is described with particular focus on the bond between material and social "reflection." This paper utilizes the Vietnam Memorial to discuss architecture's ability …

Dar Islam Mosque, Albuquerque, New Mexico Studio Design Project, Melissa Harlan Jan 2003

Dar Islam Mosque, Albuquerque, New Mexico Studio Design Project, Melissa Harlan

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In historically Muslim countries, mosques take the prescribed form of a large hall with adjacent courtyard, minaret(s), and ornately decorated entrance portal. With Islam's spread to the United States, the mosque no longer takes this form, due to construction and technological conventions, as well as the diminished economic will of the religious community. The design for the Dar Islam Mosque in Albuquerque, New Mexico takes a position of difference in response to the current debate in the Muslim community over historicism versus contextualism of mosques, where the individual's response to the space is primary, with emphasis placed on disconnecting from …

Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni Aug 2002

Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni

Sociology Faculty Research

Architectural sociology examines how architectural forms are both the cause and effect of sociocultural phenomena. As illustration of both but especially the former relationship, we could examine the role of architecture in the creation of contemporary Las Vegas, a city that has experienced almost unparalleled growth in residents (1.4 mil.) and tourists (35 mil.annually) since 1990. We consider the postmodern characteristics of Las Vegas and architecture’s role in creating this image.

A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert Jan 2002

A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The Benedictine Abbey is a product of medieval thought and society; for centuries its architecture signified the cosmology and spirituality not only of the order but also of a widely accepted Christian worldview. Through the design of a Meditation Chapel for the Benedictine Abbey of Subiaco at Paris, Arkansas, this project explored the cultural meaning and technical execution of contemporary sacred architecture. Nearly a millennium ago, the skin and bones of Gothic structure and stained glass represented a sacred ideal. In the contemporary context, however, this research probed the possibilities of using systems (interior and exterior), particularly the design of …

Lagging Behind: Fayetteville’S Historic Architecture, Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Webb Jan 2001

Lagging Behind: Fayetteville’S Historic Architecture, Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Webb

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Architecture is a reflection of what is happening in the larger cultural, economic, and artistic scene. Therefore, understanding regional variations in trend adoption is significant to understanding the relationship of Fayetteville, Ark., to the larger national context. Local architecture is a reflection of the citizens of Fayetteville as consumers of popular culture. Simultaneous adoption theory was used as the framework of this study. The project objectives were to 1) document significant architectural styles within designated historical districts and nearby areas, and 2) compare local stylistic trends with national trends to determine fit. Findings indicate that Fayetteville lagged behind the national …

Since Quranic inscriptions dominate the epigraphic decoration of Cairene Islamic religious monuments, the target of this thesis has been to investigate the Quranic inscriptions of some selected religious monuments of each main era of the Islamic history of Cairo: Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman. The questions examined are the following: what was the frequency of utilizing Quranic inscriptions compared to other types of inscriptions? What are the common architectural locations of Quranic quotations compared to other types of inscriptions? Regardless of the form of the script, whether naskhi or kufic, what were the common stylistic visual forms of inscriptions on religious …

Contemplation On Built Heritage In Ireland: Between Destruction And Preservation, Rumiko Handa Jan 2000

Contemplation On Built Heritage In Ireland: Between Destruction And Preservation, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This paper will examine the fate of several buildings in Dublin, Ireland, constructed during the British rule. The decision between destruction and preservation of such buildings naturally rested heavily on the governments' political attitudes after the Irish independence of the 19205. For example, while the City Corporation let many Georgian row houses fall to vandalism and/or destruction, the Office of Public Works recovered a number of buildings as part of a national built heritage. For example, the former Royal Hospital now serves as the Irish Museum of Modem Art. A number of questions arise, however, concerning architectural signification, which bear …

St. Finbarre’S Cathedral And Other Ecclesiastical Work In County Cork By William Burges 1827 -1881, Debbie Dawson Jan 1999

St. Finbarre’S Cathedral And Other Ecclesiastical Work In County Cork By William Burges 1827 -1881, Debbie Dawson

Theses

In this thesis I set out to examine the important role played by William Burges in the revival of stained glass in the mid-nineteenth century. I have examined how his unique vision and obsession with the thirteenth century developed through his extensive travelling abroad, studying European architecture. My central discussion is on Burges’ first major commission at the age of thirty-five; St. Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork. Through the use of local newspapers, correspondence and documentation, such as Vestry Minute Books, designs and cartoons stored in the Chapter House of St. Finbarre’s, I have tried to put the building of St. Finbarre’s …

Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to the educational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations. Due to the vast number of scores and codes generated from the Rorschach using Exner's (1978) Comprehensive Scoring System, …
