Can Environmental Law Solve The "Forever Chemical" Problem?, Mark P. Nevitt, Robert V. Percival
Can Environmental Law Solve The "Forever Chemical" Problem?, Mark P. Nevitt, Robert V. Percival
Faculty Articles
Although federal environmental law purports to provide the public with comprehensive protection against chemical risks, the U.S. chemical industry is characterized by self regulation. This self-regulation is exemplified by the dangers posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (''PFAS'') broad classes of persistent toxic substances that have now entered nearly every American's bloodstream and hundreds of public drinking water systems. Despite data linking exposure to these "forever chemicals" to cancer, infertility, and a host of other public health harms, environmental law has failed to safeguard the American people from PFAS' toxic legacy. How did this occur? And what should be done …
Every 66 Hours. Dead Or Disappeared. A Colonial Gendered Lens On Genocide: Case Study On Canada's Genocide Against Indigenous Women, Girls, And 2slgbtqqia People, Megan Uren
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
Genocide is happening today, and it will be happening tomorrow. It is not yet time to tell volunteers to stop dredging the Red River for dead bodies of Indigenous women and girls nor time for red dresses to stop being hung on the Highway of Tears. There are dead bodies in the water. There are missing bodies who were taken along wooded highways...
This article evaluates the current rates of violence against Indigenous women in Canada within (1) the greater context of an ongoing colonial genocide against Indigenous peoples and (2) with a narrow-gendered lens on women. First, I will …

Religious Leadership And Critical Junctures In The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine: 104 War Days Of Metropolitan Hilarion, Alar Kilp, Jerry G. Pankhurst
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The chairman of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR) of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) was dismissed from his office on the 104th day (June 7, 2022) of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Was Hilarion dismissed because of his ‘silence’ on the Russian invasion? We study the 104 ‘war days’ of Metropolitan Hilarion from four dimensions: leadership as position; leadership as process; leadership as result; and leadership as person. Our findings are multivocal: the Russian invasion of Ukraine did become a leadership challenge for Hilarion the way that previous military interventions (in Ukraine and Syria) and …
Federal Fashion: Uniform Modification, Self-Expression, And The Union Infantry Officer Of The American Civil War, Clayton Davis
Federal Fashion: Uniform Modification, Self-Expression, And The Union Infantry Officer Of The American Civil War, Clayton Davis
Theses
The military uniforms of the American Civil War, particularly on the Union side, varied tremendously through time and location. There were an endless number of combinationsmyriad boots and hats, coats and jackets, insignias, and trousers. That was true for officers, especially commissioned officers, who exercised the greatest aesthetic freedom. Scattered works have broached the topic of officer uniforms, especially those of Confederate officers, though their Union counterparts have gone under the microscope also. Invariably, these works include non-regulation uniforms, either compiled by officers from separate pieces or handmade by one of the hundreds of tailors working across the nation. However, …
The Next Pandemic Might Be A Petdemic, Hillary Greene
The Next Pandemic Might Be A Petdemic, Hillary Greene
Faculty Articles and Papers
A new scientific study shows that COVID-19 can be transmittedf rom cats to humans. Luckily, this channel of transmission seems extremely rare, at least thus far. But next time and there will be a next time we may not be so fortunate. This Article addresses this underappreciated risk of what I term a "petdemic" a pandemic or epidemic that involves significant disease transmission between pets and humans. With nearly 70% of U.S. households owning pets, a petdemic could be catastrophic. One of our go-to responses for even perceived petdemics, honed over the last century, is to slaughter our pets. This …
The Introduction Of Veteran Service Organizations To The State Of Montana’S Department Of Corrections, Zachary C. Rehm
The Introduction Of Veteran Service Organizations To The State Of Montana’S Department Of Corrections, Zachary C. Rehm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) exist throughout the United States and serve veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors. Some VSOs provide programming for veterans in their communities, such as job fairs, organizing fundraising events, raising awareness around the issues affecting veterans, assisting in the application process, and assisting in rehabilitation efforts. The American Legion specifically was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a 'patriotic veterans organization'. Since its conception, the Legion stands at nearly 2 million in membership, scattered throughout 13,000 posts worldwide. Most recent studies from the Justice of Bureau Statistics indicate that 8% of all incarcerated inmates are United …

Linear Programming Analysis And Diet Breadth Modeling At Bridge River, British Columbia, Sean Patrick Boyd
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Studies in diet breadth modeling and patch choice have been and continue to be a hot topic of interest among practitioners of human behavioral ecology and the set of data available at Bridge River can certainly add to these debates and discussions that have been dominating anthropology in the past few decades. The faunal assemblage of Housepit 54’s 17 anthropogenic floors have provided researchers with a plethora of data that clearly indicates periods of resource depletion and partial to full site abandonment. Using Linear Programming and Diet Breadth Modelling I analyze the most represented species in the record and establish …

Effectiveness Of Responsible Beverage Service Policies In Reducing Drunk-Driving In Maryland, Rhoda Makinde
Effectiveness Of Responsible Beverage Service Policies In Reducing Drunk-Driving In Maryland, Rhoda Makinde
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the State of Maryland and across the United States, driving under the influence (DUI) has led to a massive loss of lives and disability cases. Hence, responsible beverage service (RBS) policies and programs have been developed to prevent and control DUI incidence. This study sought to identify the effectiveness of these policies in addressing the DUI-related fatalities and injuries among young adults (18–30 years old) in the State of Maryland. Using program theory to evaluate the effectiveness of RBS policies and programs in reducing DUI, this qualitative research sampled bar patrons, club patrons, and alcohol servers/service staff in Baltimore. …
Relationship Between Demographic Characteristics And Self-Perceived Wellness Of Military Veterans, Oluwatosin Mariam Roselin Animashaun
Relationship Between Demographic Characteristics And Self-Perceived Wellness Of Military Veterans, Oluwatosin Mariam Roselin Animashaun
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An estimated 200,000 U.S. service members transition to civilian life each year and experience life-altering changes that can negatively affect how they function, their abilities, and their overall wellness. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between demographics and wellness (RQ1) and differences in wellness between combat and noncombat veterans when controlling for the number of years since discharge (RQ2). Data were collected using the General Well-being Schedule, and a sample of 144 veterans participated. The results were explored through the framework of military transition theory. Statistical analyses used included multiple linear regression and ANCOVA. …

‘It All Comes From Me’: Bahu Begam And The Making Of The Awadh Nawabi, Circa 1765–1815, Nicholas J. Abbott
History Faculty Publications
This article examines the durable, yet largely overlooked, claims of Bahu Begam (1727–1815) to dynastic wealth and authority in the Awadh nawabi (1722–1856), a North Indian Mughal ‘successor state’ and an important client of the East India Company. Chief consort (khass mahal) to Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula (r. 1754–75) and mother to his successor Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula (r. 1775–97), Bahu Begam played a well-documented role in the regime’s tumultuous politics, particularly during Warren Hastings’s tenure as the Company’s governor-general (1773–85) and his later parliamentary impeachment. But despite her prominent political influence, little attention has been paid to the substance of her …

***This book is copyrighted to Dr. Randy Clark and may not be reproduced in any form.***
This revised and greatly expanded “Response to NAR Critics” provides answers and insight regarding the confusion related to my first submission on this subject to Academia. This confusion arose in large part because my response, which was 303 pages, was not posted in full. Only 80 pages were posted. The complete document that should have been posted contained responses from seven students and one professor from Global Awakening Theological Seminary (GATS). This first truncated submission was met with several critical comments, some of which …

Chiang Mai’S Intangible Cultural Heritage : Urban Revitalization And Cultural Identity In A Northern Thai City, Alexandra Denes, Ajirapa Pradit
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Founded in 1296 CE, the walled city of Chiang Mai, Thailand was once the capital of the Lanna kingdom. In the sixteenth century, Chiang Mai’s fortunes waned, and it became a tributary state under the Burmese. This was followed by its incorporation into the Thai nation-state in the twentieth century. One outcome of Chiang Mai’s administrative integration into the Thai nation was the erosion of its distinctive cultural identity. Beginning in the 1980s, key local figures began to collaborate with communities and academic institutions to revitalize Chiang Mai’s intangible cultural heritage, including its craft traditions, rituals, textiles, and dance performances. …

Cinematic Practices: An Evaluation Of Production Theories In Service Of Micro-Budget Feature Film-Making, Andrew Myerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Bottom of a Glass Blues and its accompanying dissertation, Cinematic Practices are the basis of research into production practices used by independent and micro-budget filmmakers in the Central Florida community. The research presented in this dissertation is used to satisfy the academic requirements for the University of Central Florida's Master of Fine Arts in Feature Film Production. Cinematic Practices evaluates production theories used in studio and independent film-making in the present day in addition to practices popularly embraced by local filmmakers in Central Florida. The research found that there is no shared knowledge on how to organize film crews for …
Tech Accountability In Face Of Genocide: Gambia V. Facebook, Laurie Kim
Tech Accountability In Face Of Genocide: Gambia V. Facebook, Laurie Kim
Emory International Law Review
The exigent nature of genocide, inherent costs of litigation that may impede ongoing investigations, and general reluctance of tech companies toward international data disclosure underscore the need for states and intergovernmental organizations to enforce more expedient discovery procedures for cases involving crimes against humanity. The discovery case between the Gambia and Facebook illustrates how the current legal framework regulating international data disclosures is ill-equipped to nimbly address the exigence of genocide in Myanmar.
Existing bilateral agreements and multilateral treaties overseeing international data disclosure should be amended to compel third-party internet service providers to disclose information in the extreme and exigent …
The New Slot Machine: An International Perspective On Why The United States Should Learn To Stop Loving The Loot Box, Ajay Harish
The New Slot Machine: An International Perspective On Why The United States Should Learn To Stop Loving The Loot Box, Ajay Harish
Emory International Law Review
Games of chance are woven into the fabric of human culture. Rapid shifts in technology have resulted in the creation of the loot box, a new video game monetization scheme formed from the dregs of slot machines and trading cards. While extremely lucrative, the existence of loot boxes allows game companies to expose children to wager-like behavior, potentially creating a new generation of problem gamblers. The United States is both financially and culturally tied to video games as an industry and has been slow in its regulation of loot boxes. Given the problematic nature of loot boxes, existing regulations in …
Rural Estrangement And The Regulatory State, Ann M. Eisenberg
Rural Estrangement And The Regulatory State, Ann M. Eisenberg
Faculty Publications
In today’s polarized social and political climate, rural alienation from government is often dismissed as “just more politics” or a symptom of problematic cultural norms. This Article takes rural disaffection from government seriously, with a focus on rural relationships with the federal regulatory state. The Article argues that rural disaffection from the regulatory state is not solely a cultural or political phenomenon among white conservatives. Rural disaffection is also a broader structural issue that stems in part from the regulatory state’s crisis of legitimacy.
Two factors show that rural disaffection from the regulatory state is more diffuse and profound than …
Difficult Dialogues: Toward Building Community Through Conversation, Jessica Rhyne, David Marlow
Difficult Dialogues: Toward Building Community Through Conversation, Jessica Rhyne, David Marlow
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
This paper examines the construct of community: its nature, ontological significance, and role in society, as well as determining factors in community fragmentation and the role constructive dialogues can play in community building. With this knowledge, a campus conversation was orchestrated to explore students’ perceptions of our community and wicked problems confronting our world.
Students were asked the ways in which they engage with their communities, what barriers they identify as inhibiting community cohesion, and potential paths for progress. Challenges with orchestration as well as student responses are discussed.
This paper concludes that, among this demographic, there is very little …

Self-Care And Cultural Humility: Expanding The Practice Of Social Work Leaders, Donia Addison
DSW Capstone Projects
Social workers experience vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue regularly. Well documented in the literature, self-care has the ability to assuage these negative consequences, as well as, positively impact retention rates, decrease burnout and increase the quality of services provided to clients. Despite a burgeoning of research on self-care and burnout over the last few decades, continued empirical research is necessary. This capstone project sought to add to the knowledge base on self-care and provide pragmatic recommendations for future research and social work practice.
This capstone project was comprised of three scholarly products and focused on fostering cultural …

The Racist Roots Of The War On Drugs & The Myth Of Equal Protection For People Of Color, Steven A. Ramirez, Andre Douglas Pond Cummings
Faculty Publications & Other Works
By 2021, the costs and pain arising from the propagation of the American racial hierarchy reached such heights that calls for anti-racism and criminal justice reform dramatically expanded. The brutal murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis police vividly proved that the social construction of race in America directly conflicted with supposed American values of equal protection under law and notions of basic justice. The racially-driven War on Drugs (WOD) fuels much of the dissonance between American legal mythology—such as the non-discrimination principle and the impartial administration of the rule of law—and the reality of race in the United States. …

If against these Indians, the end proposed should be their extermination, or their removal beyond the lakes or Illinois [R]iver. The same world will scarcely do for them and us. —Thomas Jefferson to George Rogers Clark, 1780
The United States committed at least two original sins. The one, slavery, is well known. The other, conquest, is both obvious and unknown at the same time.
The fact of conquest is proven by the sheer magnitude of the land transfer from indigenous people to white Americans. Before the conquest, native Americans possessed all 1.9 billion acres of the continental United States. After …
A Considered African American Philosophy And Practice Of Arms, Nicholas J. Johnson
A Considered African American Philosophy And Practice Of Arms, Nicholas J. Johnson
Faculty Scholarship
In the spring of 1963, Holmes County, Mississippi voting rights activist Hartman Turnbow fought off a terrorist attack on his home with his sixteen-shot semiautomatic rifle. Later, Turnbow explained that his gunfire was perfectly consistent with the nonviolent philosophy of the freedom movement, declaring, “I wasn’t being non-nonviolent, I was protecting my family.” Turnbow embraced armed self-defense and political nonviolence without any sense of contradiction. In this, he channeled a generations-old practice and philosophy of arms that was an integral part of Black response to racist terrorism, mobbing, state failure, and majoritarian tyranny.
Fantasies Of Race And Place: White Nationalist And Alt-Right Undercurrents In Fantasy Roleplaying Games, Mark Hines
Fantasies Of Race And Place: White Nationalist And Alt-Right Undercurrents In Fantasy Roleplaying Games, Mark Hines
Theses and Dissertations--English
Representations of fantasy settings in roleplaying games often draw upon understandings of the medieval and early Renaissance world. This dynamic often extends to racial politics in such worlds. For the contemporary roleplaying game, this often means that game mechanics are built around race, species, or gender. Often, players interpret such mechanics as a means of bioessentializing race or practicing stereotypes rooted in Eurocentric morality and values.
This thesis examines the underlying rhetoric and implicit stakes by which race in fantasy worlds overlaps with the rhetoric and proposed stakes of White Nationalist and Alt-right actors. As fantasy roleplaying games, and especially …
The Microbiome Of The Equine Roundworm, Parascaris Spp., Jennifer Lynn Cain
The Microbiome Of The Equine Roundworm, Parascaris Spp., Jennifer Lynn Cain
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Parasitic nematodes, including the large roundworms colloquially known as ascarids, affect the health and well-being of livestock animals worldwide. The equine ascarid, Parascaris spp., was the first ascarid parasite to develop wide-spread anthelmintic drug resistance, with other species slowly following suit. There are no new classes of anthelmintics currently in development, and a solution to the ever-increasing prevalence of resistance is desperately needed. The microbiome has been shown to be an important factor in the fitness and health of many organisms and changes to microbiome composition have been associated with a plethora of diseases. The microbiome is also important to …
Racialization Of Foreigners And Self In The Chinese Immigration Project, Xunwen Zou
Racialization Of Foreigners And Self In The Chinese Immigration Project, Xunwen Zou
Sociology Honors Projects
With the Western invasion and colonization during the 20th Century, China began its internalization of the Western Enlightenment values, leading the country to an identity crisis that paved the way for its race to modernity. Attempting to understand the world and itself, China developed a new racial order largely shaped by the Western discourse and distinctly different from its ancient understanding. Based on 18 semi-structured interviews, this study explores contemporary racialization in China and its application in the racial project of immigration. I found that racial understanding in China is based on a racial/cultural hierarchy. The hierarchical top, Whites/Europeans, represents …
