Common historical interpretations of the Atlantic slave system often lose the position Africa within the political-economic haze of the era, either producing confused accounts or eliding the question of causality altogether. I argue that this tendency stems from the corrosive effects of the historian’s position as an observer from the present, and that to understand why Africa was the prime location for the source of human slaves, one needs to take a materialist approach to the problem of origins. Only through careful examination of empire, the plantation complex, and the genesis of the Atlantic working classes can one arrive at …

We study monomer melt properties and polymer properties using two approaches. The first approach takes advantage of molecular dynamics to calculate monomer melt properties. The second approach involved an experimental investigation of polycyanurate networks with varying monomer functionality and rigidity.

For our computational study we applied an existing voids method by Solca et al. to calculate melting temperature for four different cyanate esters: (a) 2’-(4-cyanatophenyl) propane (BADCy), (b) 4,4'-(ethane-1,1-diyl) bis(cyanatobenzene) (LECy), (c) tris(4-cyantophenyl) methylsilane (SiCy-3), and (d) bis(4-cyanatophenyl) dimethylsilane (SiMCy). For systems with 1 to 10% voids, the predicted melting temperature decreased due to a decrease in the free energy …

Since 1921, Black Tulsans have been looking to law and lawyers to address the harms inflicted during the Tulsa Race Massacre, albeit with little success. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) believes that logistics support is one of the key determinants of a successful large-scale invasion of Taiwan. Logistics support includes transport, materiel and oil supply, medical care, search and rescue, logistics infrastructure protection, and maintenance of war materiel reserves. Despite the recognized importance of logistics support, it is likely the PLA does not currently possess the requisite logistics capabilities to successfully support a large-scale amphibious landing on Taiwan and a possible protracted conflict involving the United States and allies. Criticism of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) runs a wide gamut. Accusations of human rights abuses, intellectual property theft, authoritarian domestic policies, disrespecting sovereign borders, and propaganda campaigns all have one common factor: the CCP’s desire to control information. Controlling information means controlling data. Lurking beneath the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) tumultuous relationship with the rest of the world is the fight between nations to control their citizens’ data while also keeping it out of the hands of adversaries. The CCP’s Three Laws are its newest weapon in this data war.

Over the last decade, "cyber power" has become an increasingly prominent concept and instrument of national strategy. This article explores the nature of contemporary cyber power, focusing on how states should respond to "cyber uncertainty." Cases of cyber operations against Estonia, Georgia, and Ukraine, as well as cyber operations conducted (and suffered) by the United States, highlight the evolving role of cyber operations as an instrument of statecraft. Given the complexity of cyber forensics and the polluted information environment of the global public sphere, the public diplomacy of coordinated attribution statements cannot be expected to cut through conclusively or uniformly. …

"Conserving" The Middle Ground: Tennessee's Unionist Press In The Secession Crisis, 1860-1861, Michael Singleton

This thesis advances scholars’ understanding of how newspaper editors framed and presented news during the secession crisis of 1860-1861. Methodologically, it draws on the publications of seven Unionist editors from Tennessee who initially resisted secession but later pursued different courses during the Civil War. Through this period, editors balanced their roles as journalists and political actors working to advance an ideological cause. Guided by existing practices and their unique journalistic styles, these editors presented a near unified message—influenced by Whig political culture—that framed their response to outside events. In the late 1800s, professional sports attracted high-stakes gambling. The potential for bribery and extortion led to a general sense that paid athletes were corruptible and competitions untrustworthy. While betting on amateur events was common, a deep divide emerged between “pure” amateurs, who were said to compete for the love of the sport, and professionals, who competed for money in the form of cash prizes or other remuneration. Current preclinical research into traumatic brain injury focuses heavily upon cellular and molecular testing to determine the effects of injury and potential benefits of neuroprotective treatments. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) mechanism and severity are heterogenous clinically, resulting in a multitude of physical, cognitive, and behavioral deficits. However, approximately 80% suffer from milder injuries. Thus, examining pathophysiological changes associated with mild TBI is imperative for improving clinical translation and evaluating the efficacy of potential therapeutic strategies. Through this work, we developed models of TBI, ranging in both injury mechanism and severity, using an electromagnetic controlled cortical impact (CCI) device. First, we characterized and optimized a closed head, mild TBI model (DTBI) to determine the clinical translatability and practicality of producing repeated mild injuries. Strong ethnic identity is associated with overall well-being, resilience to change, and higher self-esteem (Kiang et al., 2006; Martinez & Dukes, 1997; Umaña-Taylor, 2003; Yip & Fuligni, 2002) and serves as a protective factor against the stress associated with discrimination (Alvarez & Kimura, 2001; Phinney et al., 1998). Given the historical and systemic barriers faced by the Native American and Alaska Native population, including the history of genocide, colonization, and intergenerational trauma, the development of a strong Indigenous ethnic identity is a necessary area of research focus. This work aimed to investigate the degradation of fentanyl in aqueous solutions using unsupported water-soluble cobalt(III) porphyrins (55 and 56), AuNP supported water-soluble cobalt(III) porphyrins (67 and 68), and liposome supported water-soluble cobalt(III) porphyrins (69 and 70). Complexes 55, 56, 68, and 69 have been shown to remove fentanyl from aqueous solutions at 37 ºC. The degradation of fentanyl, and the identification of breakdown products were analyzed with the use of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). Complex 55 has been shown to completely degrade fentanyl at 37 ºC in as little as two hours with a 400 mol% catalyst loading. Complex …

The Watts Gang Treaty: Hidden History And The Power Of Social Movements, William J. Aceves

On the eve of the 1992 Los Angeles uprising, a small group of gang leaders and community activists drafted an agreement to curtail violence in south Los Angeles. Several gangs in Watts accepted the truce and established a cease-fire agreement. By most accounts, the 1992 Watts Gang Treaty succeeded in reducing gang violence in Los Angeles. Local activists attributed the reduction in shootings to the Treaty. Even law enforcement officials grudgingly recognized the Treaty’s contribution to reducing gang violence and a corresponding decrease in homicides.

In this study, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of vapor grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) reinforced polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) composite and PVDF/VGCNF thermally sprayed with magnetite (Fe3O4) and graphite has been investigated. EMI SE evaluations were performed in the frequency range of 30 kHz-1.5 GHz. The developed nanocomposite (NC) system was fabricated by high shear mixing using a Banbury type mixer. The material was then subjected to compression molding. Subsequently, the films were thermally sprayed using Fe3O4/graphite powder. The NC and coated NC films had average thicknesses of 0.82 mm and 0.93 mm, respectively. The NC films were subjected …
