China’S Rise And Technology Denials : A Study Of Variations In Allies’ Cooperation With The United States, Cheuk Ling Pong

US and its allies worked closely to deny the USSR’s access to advanced technologies during the Cold War. In addition to multilateral mechanisms such as CoCom, they also took similar unilateral measures despite disputes between them. Yet, compared to the US-Soviet strategic rivalry, US-allies cooperation over technology denials against China is much less coordinated. Allies have not only taken different unilateral policies but also shown major disputes with the US. Allies’ unsynchronized and inconsistent unilateral technology transfer policies and the absence of multilateral institutions similar to the CoCom demonstrate the looseness in current US cooperation with allies in the China …

In recent years, the global economy has been beset by cyber-attacks. These events disrupt business and governmental operations, large and small, and include broad-horizon attacks on infrastructure and pointed network takeovers. The attacks can include malicious online activities directed at stealing financial and intellectual property or, manipulating, destroying, and denying access to critical information. Despite increased awareness of these challenges, the victimization of private and public networks continues, and the economic impacts mount daily. This research will present the economic impact of cyberattacks on United States businesses and governmental agencies.

The democratic peace theory holds that democracies rarely, if ever, go to war with one another based on the institutional and normative features of democratic governments. Alternatively, the capitalist peace theory insists that, rather than the democratic nature of a government, states opt out of warfare when their economic interests are at play – whether that be trade interdependence or general market features. Traditionally, scholars have focused on explaining the causes of Militarized Interstate Disputes (MIDs) among advanced industrialized democracies. Space And Existential Risk: The Need For Global Coordination And Caution In Space Development, Chase Hamilton

This Article examines urgent risks resulting from outer space activities under the current space law regime. Emerging literature alarmingly predicts that the risk of a catastrophe that ends the human species this century is approximately 10–25%. Continued space development may increase, rather than decrease, overall existential risk due in part to crucial and identifiable market failures. Addressing these shortcomings should take priority over the competing commercial, scientific, and geopolitical interests that currently dominate in space policy. Sensible changes, including shifting space into a closed-access commons as envisioned by the 1979 Moon Treaty, may help in achieving existential security.

Gender-based violence is inevitable in every armed conflict zone. To survive, every human being, including women and girls, requires security. In armed conflict zones, however, women and girls are more vulnerable to the dangers of insecurity. These difficulties may influence them physically, psychologically, economically, and educationally. They may also have to live with the effects of their trauma for the rest of their lives. The effects of the Boko Haram insurgency on women’s security in Nigeria’s northeast are the subject of this study. This investigation relied on structural violence theory. To illustrate the logic and grammar of coercion, this analysis relies on decision-theory methods, such as game theory, that examine the strategic decision-making process in interactions with adversaries and partners. The intent here is not to offer predictive models of rational-actor behavior. Rather, the intent is to use game-theory and similar approaches to understand how coercion works better. This analysis considers competitive interactions between actors that have discrete and qualifiable, if not quantifiable, preferences and who behave rationally, though this analysis acknowledges the behavior that is considered rational is frequently informed by nonrational social, cultural, and psychological factors. Ouida’s Under Two Flags (1867) is not a widely read Victorian novel today, but it is offers important insight into the philosophical concerns of a novelist who was hugely popular in her time. In Under Two Flags, Ouida explores what she saw as the epistemological problem developing in the nineteenth century, a nihilistic view that promoted scepticism, aestheticism, and idleness, which is a perspective she believed was responsible for the demise of the aristocracy. Wishing to restore the power and position of the aristocracy, Ouida sends her protagonist Bertie Cecil, a dandy who embodies the aestheticism and ennui of the …

This teaching resource asks students to explore the relationship between unconscious bias and citational mechanics through a critical feminist lens.[i] In the mini-lesson, students create, compare, and discuss citations for a text with ambiguous authorship. The exercise is suitable for any undergraduate classroom in which the instructor aims for students to bring more nuanced intentionality to their citational practices. I have designed the lesson to comply with any academic citation style(s) so that it can be easily adapted either to courses focused on writing within a specific discipline, or to courses with an interdisciplinary writing component.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of successful aging of middle-aged African American men. African American men continue to have the worst health status of all ethnic groups. This study explored middle-aged African American men who identified themselves as free of any physical or cognitive issues. The study explored how the men maintained their health while avoiding a primary care provider and health care system with a history of mistreatment and discrimination. The research study provided additional information about successful aging and the lived experience of those participants.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), an offshoot of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), was established in the 1970s to struggle for autonomy and self-determination of the Bangsamoro. The Bangsamoro home of the Moro Muslim community in the Southern Philippines achieved its strategic goal of a measure of autonomy through a national plebiscite in December 2019. For a country that has been declared a democratic nation since it gained independence, Indonesia still faces the real challenge of maintaining democratic values. Currently, Indonesian legal regulations do not provide a clear standard for when speech is protected and when it can be considered actionable defamation. The obscure scope of the law means that it can affect some kinds of speech, such as opinion or criticism, and render that speech punishable as a crime.

From the COVID-19 pandemic to the Ukraine war, recent events have highlighted possible threats to the continuity of presidential leadership. The presidential line of succession in the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 has several flaws. Some of the successors it designates might be ill-suited to discharge the powers of the presidency. Others concerns include its constitutionality, inappropriate incentives it might create, and the democratic legitimacy of outcomes it might produce. This report proposes several reforms to the line of succession for pre- and post-inaugural succession contingencies.

Throughout its history, the U.S. Congress has had several brushes with catastrophe that threatened to prevent it from functioning or to change its balance of power. This report advances reforms to ensure that Congress can continue functioning if many of its members die or become incapacitated or if lawmakers' ability to meet at the Capitol is challenged. It recommends procedures for (1) rapidly replacing members of Congress in the event of mass death or incapacity; (2) declaring members of Congress incapacitated during an emergency; and (3) implementing emergency protocols.

Moses, David, and Joshua are all designated the honorific title “servant of YHWH” in the HB. Even a cursory reading of the HB texts involving these figures would leave little surprise as to why they are bestowed this exclusive moniker. There are only ten individuals who are given this title in the MT, and of these ten, the majority of them do not raise questions, except one—the sixth-century Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar. Costumes are a crucial element in the representation of historical figures. Beyond reflecting aesthetic trends, clothing is closely intertwined with culture, economics, and the personal history of the individual who wore them. Fabric simulation allows for the digital creation and animation of garments too fragile or incomplete to be used directly in film or education. This thesis demonstrates the digital reconstruction of the clothing worn by H. L. Hunley crew member James Wicks. The H. L. Hunley is a submarine from the Civil War. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to have the greatest incidence among athletes participating in American football. The headgear design research community has focused on developing accurate computational and experimental analysis techniques to better assess the ability of headgear technology to attenuate impacts and protect athletes from TBI. Despite efforts to innovate the headgear system, minimal progress has been made to innovate the faceguard. To understand Addams’s texts, readers need to attend both to her evolutionary methodologies and to her interpretive strategies. Addams was an evolutionary scientist and sociologist in the days before natural selection became merged with genetics and before sociology adopted a stance of positivistic objectivity. Like other intellectuals at the nineteenth century’s turn, Addams addressed contemporary social problems by locating them within their evolutionary histories and proposing ways of moving society toward healthy equilibrium. She used specific social theories as tools, selecting the ones best suited for each given social problem. Evolutionary theorizing served as foundation and framing for her writings. …

Measuring Judicial Collegiality Through Dissent, Jonathan Remy Nash

While scholars frequently offer ideology as a primary explanation for judicial behavior, judges, and some scholars, emphasize the importance of collegiality on multimember courts. But there is disagreement over how to determine when collegiality is at work, and what type of multimember court is more likely to exhibit collegiality among its judges. Resolving these competing claims calls for a valid measure of collegiality.

This Article develops novel measures of collegiality based on dissenting judges’ expressions of collegiality towards judges in the majority. It uses judge-level and court-level databases to validate these measures by showing that the novel measures correlate with …
