Published on April 7, 2023. In Old & New Battlespaces: Society, Military Power, and War, Drs. Jahara Matisek and Buddhika Jayamaha, examine the nature of battlespace and how one can make sense of it across space, through well-known and emergent domains, and along the various levels of war, asking where one should look, how one should look, and for what one should look. Reviewer Dr. Robert J. Bunker shows how the book executes well in its modernist …
Cultural Conflict For Veterans Transitioning To Civilian Life, Adam Francis
Cultural Conflict For Veterans Transitioning To Civilian Life, Adam Francis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
United States military veterans face many challenges while transitioning from the military to civilian life that require a new civilian perspective to navigate the differences between these experiences. Previous research is focused on psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological issues veterans face (Ainspan et al., 2018; Coulthard & Lee, 2022; Romaniuk et al., 2020). The military and the Veterans Administration (VA) have primarily focused on veterans achieving employment and education after leaving the military. Being in the military is highly stressful and requires working closely with others (Krishnakumar et al., 2019), and reflects a collectivist nature (Bongioanni, 2022; Verkamp, 2021). Civilian culture …

Factor In Fear: Interference Competition In Polymorphic Spadefoot Toad Tadpoles And Its Potential Role In Disruptive Selection, Ryan A. Martin
Factor In Fear: Interference Competition In Polymorphic Spadefoot Toad Tadpoles And Its Potential Role In Disruptive Selection, Ryan A. Martin
Faculty Scholarship
Disruptive selection arises when extreme phenotypes have a fitness advantage compared to more-intermediate phenotypes. Theory and evidence suggest that intraspecific resource competition is a key driver of disruptive selection. However, while competition can be indirect (exploitative) or direct (interference), the role of interference competition in disruptive selection has not been tested, and most models of disruptive selection assume exploitative competition. We experimentally investigated whether the type of competition affects the outcome of competitive interactions using a system where disruptive selection is common: Mexican spadefoot toads (Spea multiplicata). Spea tadpoles develop into alternative resource-use phenotypes: carnivores, which consume fairy shrimp and …

Aid And Assistance As A “Use Of Force” Under The Jus Ad Bellum, Michael N. Schmitt, W. Casey Biggerstaff
Aid And Assistance As A “Use Of Force” Under The Jus Ad Bellum, Michael N. Schmitt, W. Casey Biggerstaff
International Law Studies
Although the prohibition of the use of force is a cornerstone of international law, our understanding of what constitutes a “use of force” under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter nonetheless continues to evolve. While the term was traditionally understood to mean armed force, emerging interpretations are expanding our understanding of the prohibition’s breadth. The Charter’s text, travaux préparatoires, and subsequent interpretations and practice by States, reinforced by the persuasive reasoning of the International Court of Justice, all confirm that the notion of force extends to indirect force, which includes military support provided to parties to a conflict. Yet, to …

Something “Transcendentally Stimulating”: Resistance And Antidote To Empiricist British Culture In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’S Sherlock Holmes, Crissy Preston, Crissy M. Preston
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
Sherlock Holmes is a name synonymous with detective and perhaps more familiar to households than his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His lasting impact as a literary figure is indisputable, but the curiosity surrounding the reasons for his longevity in popularity remain an enigma to many scholars and critics. In my thesis, I will discuss some of the reasons Holmes relates to readers from various time periods, age groups, and nationalities for more than a century. The first section of this project will establish the empiricist culture surrounding the decadent late 1800s, which compose the setting for most of Doyle’s …

An Overview Of Unmanned Aircraft System Integration Within The National Airspace System, Roman Davis
Senior Honors Theses
Unmanned aircraft systems have evolved rapidly in recent years. This evolution involves the development of UAS applications that many experts did not anticipate ever occurring. This evolution has left regulatory bodies with a wide gap between the technology available and the regulation, procedures, and documentation to regulate and manage it. The Federal Aviation Administration is the United States’ lead government organization in the effort to integrate this technology into the National Airspace System. Many government and industry organizations are working with the FAA on this task, which includes the execution of research and development projects. The FAA and its partners …

Law Of Art, Law Of War: The Legacy Of The Law Of War In International Cultural Property Law, Richard G. De Schweinitz
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
Issues of international art law tend to center on the restitution of lost works of art to their owners across borders. Wars today engender many disputes over rightful ownership; but historically, these conflicts were decided rather simply by the law of nations. Per one Judge Croke, “all property belonging to the enemy shall be liable to confiscation”. However, one of the earliest principles of just war in the modern era was the extension of special protections to works of culture. This principle, developed in the international conflict context, evolved through a lineage of international agreements into the basis for modern …

Denver Law Review
This Note is the product of the Tenth Circuit Database Project, and it analyzes one year of Tenth Circuit data from April 2021 through March 2022. The Project uses two databases, including one that was specifically designed for Denver Law Review and the Tenth Circuit Database Project. The information is displayed using an unconventional approach. It is crafted as a yearbook that compares the Tenth Circuit to a high school. Although the presentation is playful, the Note is a nascent attempt at manipulating the data in a meaningful way. Ultimately, the Note finds several interesting trends in the data, including …

Checking The President’S Sanctioning Power In The New Age Of Economic Warfare, Jaden Mcquivey
Checking The President’S Sanctioning Power In The New Age Of Economic Warfare, Jaden Mcquivey
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The United States President has nearly unlimited sanctioning power. This paper agrees with presidential authority over sanctions, which has been firmly established by the Trading With the Enemy Act of 1917, International Emergency Economic Powers Act in 1977, United States v. Curtiss-Wright Export Corp., and INS v. Chadha. However, this paper does not agree with unchecked sanctioning power. By simply declaring a national emergency, the President can legally justify most economic sanctions on foreign countries. Over the last few decades, the United States has entered a new state of “sanctioning madness” and is known for its particularly destructive unilateral sanctions. …

Hospitality And Questions In Classical Christian Education, Lynn Doto
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
Christian parents continue to have few education options suitable for kingdom children. While textbooks and test scores hold prominent consideration for many Christian parents, neither cultivate a love of learning nor human flourishing. Rather, it is the language used in the learning environment that invites or repels engagement and learning. An expository exploration of sentence purposes and the type of sentence most commonly used by Christ to engage His learners reveals the power of the question. Appropriately asked, questions welcome learners to actively participate as well as to attentively listen. It is the workhorse of humility, for the question is …

Realism By Rail: Art And Mobilities In Late Imperial Russia, Stephen Tyler Urchick
Realism By Rail: Art And Mobilities In Late Imperial Russia, Stephen Tyler Urchick
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation is the first in English to consider how artists primarily from Russia’s Partnership for Traveling Art Exhibitions, known as the Wanderers, wandered. It breaks with decades of scholarship portraying these painters as pleinarist populists who went to the people, or bourgeois professionals who stayed home. Although the Wanderers rarely accompanied their group’s eponymous Traveling Exhibition as it toured by rail, the artists remained exceptionally mobile over their careers in both the literal and extended notions of this word. How did these artists exploit the accelerations of the late nineteenth century to advance their ambitions, reproduce and circulate their …

The Gospel Of Luke: Major Themes, Narratives, And Theology, Adelyn Schoenbeck
Biblical Studies Student Projects
Within the paper, major Lukan themes are portrayed. The birth narrative is reimagined with major themes of the narrative, especially the purpose of the birth narrative to Theophilus, Luke's mentor. The paper defines and identifies Christology and discipleship which is formed from Luke. The paper illustrates what Jesus really means by stating the first century was an "evil and adulterous generation" (Luke 9:41). The essay concludes with the passion narrative and personal challenges that I have faced as studying the book of Luke.

Explaining Guatemalan Vigilantism, Bryant Mcconkie
Explaining Guatemalan Vigilantism, Bryant Mcconkie
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
Ripped from his home in Concepción, Guatemala, the evening of October 13, 2015, Mayor Bacilio Juracán was brutally beaten, doused with gasoline, and burned to death by attackers convinced he had orchestrated the murder of a political rival they supported. In just this one isolated incident, the town hall, various cars, and at least six additional buildings were burned along with the mayor (“Linchan y Queman” 2015). A growing number of similar lynchings—vigilante attacks in which victims of the mob are severely injured or killed—across Guatemala have thrust Guatemalan vigilantism into the public consciousness, perplexing governments and political theorists alike …
