A Cross-Cultural Exploration: Global Methods Of Contraception And Family Planning, Cora Pereira
A Cross-Cultural Exploration: Global Methods Of Contraception And Family Planning, Cora Pereira
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In today's world, women are attempting to take control of their reproductive choices. Some have been met with roadblocks that may prohibit or limit access to women's healthcare centers and family planning services. This research explores women’s reproductive health and contraception usage and the impact of cultural influences globally. Cultural adversities may overshadow the benefits of having access to healthcare facilities along with contributing to the circulation of inaccurate information. This may prevent or deter women from accessing healthcare facilities and methods of family planning. Understanding variation in the United States and in other cultures will contribute to the global …

Genome Mining For Anti-Crispr Operons Using Machine Learning, Bowen Yang, Minal Khatri, Jinfang Zheng, Jitender S. Deogun, Yanbin Yin
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Motivation: Encoded by (pro-)viruses, anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins inhibit the CRISPR-Cas immune system of their prokaryotic hosts. As a result, Acr proteins can be employed to develop more controllable CRISPR-Cas genome editing tools. Recent studies revealed that known acr genes often coexist with other acr genes and with phage structural genes within the same operon. For example, we found that 47 of 98 known acr genes (or their homologs) co-exist in the same operons. None of the current Acr prediction tools have considered this important genomic context feature. We have developed a new software tool AOminer to facilitate the improved …

A Ludic Generation: Bridging Architecture, Games, And Technology For More Playful Spaces, Jade Lefebvre
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
In a world dominated by mundane environments, this thesis proposes a novel approach to designing public spaces that integrate game design principles and extended reality technology. By embracing the inherent ludic behavior found in human nature and games, I aim to elevate everyday experiences.
This research delves into the capabilities of extended reality technology, psychology of play and its cultural and societal background, psychology of human archetypes, and game design components as an extraction for architectural typologies. Key findings reveal that by analyzing game components, design languages are formed and can be used to develop feasible architectural typologies.
The significance …
The Armed Forces Of Ukraine: From The Collapse Of The Soviet Union To The Russian Invasion, Gunnar Bash
The Armed Forces Of Ukraine: From The Collapse Of The Soviet Union To The Russian Invasion, Gunnar Bash
Master's Theses
The Armed Forces of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Збройні сили України (ЗСУ), Zbroyni Syly Ukrayiny, (ZSU)) were once internationally unknown, having fought no wars since the fall of the USSR in 1991. However, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ZSU has become a topic of international debate and one that is discussed daily between major think tanks and war studies institutions, along with the world’s most powerful militaries. Looking back to 1991, I discuss how the ZSU came to be, how they dealt with Russian and partisan transgressions in Ukraine, and how they have evolved from their interactions with the West …

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
With the advancements of technology in modern times, the use of remote or unmanned expeditions and surveillance systems has risen in prevalence in the military industry. The ability to accomplish objectives without jeopardizing human lives has become paramount to military operations. To accomplish this, the military has used unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, and unmanned underwater vehicles, or UUVs. These vehicles take the form of drones, equipped with cameras and/or sensors, that are controlled remotely to obtain information without directly involving human lives. It has recently become of interest to combine the two drones, to be able to allow for …

Cntr Design And Proof Of Concept For Liquid Metal Rotating Fuel Tubes, Catherine Carver, Caroline Dowling, Miguel Alessandro Lopez, Ben Rosenberg, Dan White
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Modern chemical engine technology is insufficient to fulfill humanity's aspiration to explore deep space. The 900 s Isp that Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) engines can achieve is sufficient to enable missions like manned missions to Mars. When employing a storable propellant like hydrogen, methane, ammonia, etc., extravagant missions like this call for a specific impulse of at least 900s to be successful. Consequently, High-Performance Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (HP-NTP) is necessary for space travel for it to take an acceptable length of time. A human voyage to Mars that lasts less than 15 months will be possible thanks to HP-capacity NTP's …

Interest in lightweight composite overwrapped pressure vessels for military, aerospace and industrial sectors, just to name a few, has grown greatly in recent years. For the military and specifically the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, the main objective of the composite overwrapped pressure vessel is to replace the steel tanks that hold high pressure gasses in the new generation submarines to reduce overall weight of the submarine. The following analysis will show the development of a composite overwrapped pressure vessel using an aluminum liner from soda cans and a 90-0-90-0 overwrap of 2x2, 3,000 filament twill weave carbon fiber with an …
Interlinking Between Income Tax, Citizenship And Democracy? A Case Study Of Canada And China, Jinyan Li
Interlinking Between Income Tax, Citizenship And Democracy? A Case Study Of Canada And China, Jinyan Li
Conference Papers
The interlink between taxation, citizenship and democracy appears to be obvious in Western democracies: citizens are voters, taxpayers and beneficiaries of public spending funded by tax revenues. The literature on the politics of taxation suggests that democratic institutions affect taxation at every stage of the policy-making process, the type of elections and governance model influence the level of redistribution and complexity of the tax system, democracies generally choose policies that are more favorable to the poor than non-democracies, the tax mix varies with the nature of the political regime, and more repressive governments rely less on personal income taxation. Political …

One Image, One Thousand Words? Discussing The Outer Limits Of Resorting To Visual Digital Evidence In Cases Involving International Crimes, Solon Solomon
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Visual digital evidence plays a cardinal role in international law, particularly when it comes to international criminal law and the documentation of international crimes. This Article argues that resorting to visual digital evidence in cases involving international crimes should take place with cognizance of the prejudicial bias that such pieces of evidence can exert. In that sense, echoing the general impact of digital evidence on international criminal law, as stressed in the Berkeley Protocol on Digital Open Source Investigations as well as the Leiden Guidelines on the Use of Digitally Derived Evidence, this Article discusses why international courts as well …
Miren’S Story: The Evacuation Of A Child Refugee From The Basque Country In 1937, Julia Palmer
Miren’S Story: The Evacuation Of A Child Refugee From The Basque Country In 1937, Julia Palmer
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Ten-year-old Miren Alonso was one of almost 4,000 Basque children evacuated from the Basque Country in northern Spain to Southampton, England by the Basque Government in May 1937, during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). This article, based on extensive oral testimony, provides a firsthand look at a historical event that remains largely unknown to most people. It is also one of only a few long-term studies of the evacuation from the perspective of an individual. This is a summary of Miren’s experience before, during, and after the evacuation, framed within the social, political, and historical context of the period. Her …
Inter-Subjectivity: How Should A Spanish Oral Historian Analyse The Oral Life Stories Of Eta Activists?, Nicolás Buckley
Inter-Subjectivity: How Should A Spanish Oral Historian Analyse The Oral Life Stories Of Eta Activists?, Nicolás Buckley
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
The Basque pro-independence terrorist group ETA (an acronym for what translates to ‘Freedom for the Basque Country’) announced a definitive ceasefire in 2011. A year later, I began a PhD on how the Basque conflict could be understood from the life stories of ETA activists. After completing my research, I asked myself: What kind of tensions emerged during the interview process with ETA activists who collaborated in my research taking into account my family background and my Spanish identity? Instead of just appearing as a bidirectional relation between the narrator and the interviewer, inter-subjectivity reveals more powerful mechanisms as it …

Queer Mother, Hybrid Monster: Serpentine Hybridity And Monstrous Motherhood In D’Arras And Spenser, Farah R. Paterson-Cisco
Theses and Dissertations
Disparate, deformed, and hybridized bodies of women have appeared in mythology and literature in myriad allegorical incarnations as representations of monstrosity. The monstrous serpent-woman hybrid form can be traced back quite far, though at the point when one reaches antiquity, literary examples meld into the religious, mythological, and folkloric. These hybrid beings also embodied meanings particular to their time and culture that work to distinguish them as literary characters, presenting a compelling case for the consideration of the hybridized and deformed figure as a threat to patriarchal systems. Contemporary readings through the lens of feminist, gender, and disability frameworks offer …

Blacklash: Phenomenological Hermeneutics In Black Dance, Darvejon A. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The horrors inflicted on Black bodies, souls, and spirits in the United States during the transatlantic slave trade, the Jim Crow era, and the current era (2023) have a lasting legacy of trauma metabolized through the body and transmuted generationally. Jones uses this data to contextualize the work of Black dance artists as hermeneutic phenomena in which the Black dance artist is a hermeneut tasked with delivering a message of the Black body/spirit complex: “I AM HUMAN. DO NOT KILL ME.” This paper examines how Black dance artists frequently petition for their survival — incessantly subjugated to the interpreter’s empathy, …

The aim of this paper is to present new information pertaining to the demographic profile of the juvenile burial assemblage (n=39) from a Late Holocene site located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. CA-ALA-329 is commonly referred to as Ryan Mound and now bears the Muwekma Ohlone name of Mánni Muwékma Kúksú Hóowok Yatiš Túnnešte-tka, which means Place Where the People of the Kúksú (Bighead) Pendants are Buried. This site has been extensively studied and has contributed significantly to our understanding of life on the Bay during the Middle and Late Periods. However, most of the …
Goemai/Ankwei Religiosity: Understanding Indigenous Divinity In Relation To Christianity, Edward Muge
Goemai/Ankwei Religiosity: Understanding Indigenous Divinity In Relation To Christianity, Edward Muge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Postcolonial/decolonial thinking developed in response to modernity’s colonial logic that glorified and universalized the Western locus of enunciation, subjectivity, and history. The prioritization of Western epistemology, hierarchization of being based on race, gender, and religion, and the universalization of Western Christian religion relegated all other modes of being, knowing, and accessing the Divine to the periphery. For a long time, indigenous people have accepted the Western linear worldview that makes them the exemplars of the whites (Euro-Americans) in their primordial state of Western history and development. The goal of the Western colonial matrix of power is the subsumption of …

The Dynamics Of Sustainable Livelihoods And Agroforestry In Gunungkidul Karst Area, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Eka Sulistiyowati, Setiadi Setiadi, Eko Haryono
Forest and Society
The livelihoods of farmers in developing countries are often associated with the existence of forests, especially agroforestry. The dynamics of agroforestry and livelihoods could not be separated from the political context and developments in Indonesia. In this paper, the dynamics of Sustainable Livelihood Assets (SLA) owned by smallholder farmers are explored using three political sequences, namely the New Order Era, the Reform Era, and the Post-Reform Era. The result showed that the development of agroforestry in Gunungkidul had been primarily influenced by political initiatives that have a connection with vegetation coverage, livelihood assets, and species composition in the systems. The …

Military Officers As Neo-Classical Professionals: Guardians Of The Republic, Not Merely Servants Of The Regime, Rob Atkinson
Military Officers As Neo-Classical Professionals: Guardians Of The Republic, Not Merely Servants Of The Regime, Rob Atkinson
University of Memphis Law Review
This paper is the first step in developing a neo-classical theory of the military officer corps as a functionalist profession. It unpacks the central paradox of Samuel P. Huntington’s The Soldier and the State: Why does an account that begins with a call for a highly professionalized officer corps to obey the orders of any legally legitimate civilian regime end with the promise that humanity can achieve both security and redemption if all the nations of the world adopt core military values? How can “militarize the military,” Huntington’s solution to the classical question of civilian/military relations—Plato’s “Who guards the guardians?”—come …

Limits On Biomedical Research: Whether, Why, And How, Christine Grady
Limits On Biomedical Research: Whether, Why, And How, Christine Grady
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
This article examines the limitations of laws and regulations in regulating biomedical research. While laws and regulations can serve as guardrails to limit certain research studies, they are often blunt instruments that struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of scientific progress. Moreover, laws in one jurisdiction may not be binding on others, making it difficult to regulate the global scientific community. The article argues that regulatory parsimony should be exercised, imposing regulations only where they work and not where they are unhelpful. The article also explores the ethical considerations surrounding biomedical research and its impact on society, including …

Widening The Lens From Genesis 19:5 To Genesis 18 And 19: A Remedy For Transmitted Blindness, Kelly Olson
Obsculta
This article is the product of an exercise in scriptural interpretation. The text of Genesis 18 and 19 were chosen due to an awareness of a common theme propagated by culture and the desire to better understand the content of the text using tools of interpretation that connect ancient text with contemporary human experience in hopes to open access to a diverse population that nurtures and elevates creation rather than divide and harm marginalized populations.
Rock Art And State Formation In Ancient Egypt, Luke Trull
Rock Art And State Formation In Ancient Egypt, Luke Trull
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The process of state formation in Egypt has been variously modeled. Lapidary tableaux from the eastern and western deserts of Egypt have been dated stylistically to the later period of state formation, the Late Predynastic. This thesis provides an overview of select theories on state formation, with particular focus on ancient Egypt. Those theories are then used as a lens, through which three rock art tableaux might be better understood and dated. This thesis will examine specifically the chronological stages of state formation outlined by Anđelković. After dating two other rock art tableaux to the Late Predynastic Period, I assign …
A Constant Presence Of Absence: The Construction Of (In)Visibility And Immigrant Deaths In The Borderlands, Haley Planicka
A Constant Presence Of Absence: The Construction Of (In)Visibility And Immigrant Deaths In The Borderlands, Haley Planicka
Undergraduate Theses
The same nation that champions itself as a cultural “melting pot” is the very same that allows thousands of migrant bodies to rot in the heat of the United States-Mexico borderlands. It is through the sociopolitical debasement of immigrants to “bare life bodies” that thousands are made invisible and erased through their deaths, with little recognition or accountability taken on behalf of government institutions. Hiding behind the conveniently harsh desert terrain to mask any sense of culpability, the United States government exercises a sort of invisible hand over immigrant lives that is reinforced through harmful policy, Border Patrol’s “bare life” …
