Incels, Violence, And Masculinity: How Masculinity And Membership To Online Communities Shape Perceptions Of Violence, Meghan Scarlott
Incels, Violence, And Masculinity: How Masculinity And Membership To Online Communities Shape Perceptions Of Violence, Meghan Scarlott
Student Theses
As online involuntary celibate (incel) forms have grown, they have become dominated by violent and misogynistic rhetoric. There have also been instances of offline violence being motivated by incel ideology and anti-feminist beliefs. Past research has established a link between inceldom and violent rhetoric through analysis of incel forum posts and activity. However, comparisons between non-incels and incels regarding masculinity and violence have rarely been conducted. We used a survey design to compare incels and non-incels on three factors: support for violence, inceldom characteristics, and internalized masculinity. Consistent with prior research, incels held more negative views of women and feminism …

“Confining The Enemy”—Halford Mackinder’S Theory Of Containment And The Conflict In Ukraine, Michael Hochberg, Leonard Hochberg
Naval War College Review
Before George Kennan outlined his vision of containment, Halford Mackinder articulated a vision of maritime geostrategic logic that prioritized some geographic locations over others. Because Mackinder’s writings have been marshaled to assess the ongoing U.S. commitment to Ukraine, it is important to appreciate how his theory applies to the current crisis.
The Cuban Missile Crisis At Sea—Avoidance Of Nuclear War Not Left To Chance, Theodore Voorhees
The Cuban Missile Crisis At Sea—Avoidance Of Nuclear War Not Left To Chance, Theodore Voorhees
Naval War College Review
Many contradictions emerge from the nine published accounts of the confrontation between the Soviet submarine B-59 and American antisubmarine-warfare units during the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. Assessing those accounts reveals that no participant should be anointed as “the man who saved the world,” and that the peaceful conclusion of the confrontation should not be attributed to good luck.
Smart Balancers Kill Many Birds With Few Stones—Sino-Russian Security Cooperation In The Maritime Domain, Maximilian Ernst, Tongfi Kim
Smart Balancers Kill Many Birds With Few Stones—Sino-Russian Security Cooperation In The Maritime Domain, Maximilian Ernst, Tongfi Kim
Naval War College Review
Minimizing the costs and risks of balancing is crucial for a coalition facing stronger opponents—such as China and Russia facing the United States and its partners. The motives of Sino-Russian security cooperation should be understood within the context of a full spectrum of balancing strategies in international relations and the relatively lower risk of escalation in the maritime domain.
The European Union’S Quest To Become A Global Maritime-Security Provider, Christian Bueger, Timothy Edmunds
The European Union’S Quest To Become A Global Maritime-Security Provider, Christian Bueger, Timothy Edmunds
Naval War College Review
The European Union (EU) seeks to become a global maritime-security actor, yet strategic challenges influence its maritime-security strategy process. Is there a distinctive and coherent EU approach to global maritime security, and how should the EU address the growing range of maritime challenges, including the intensification of militarized competition in the Indo-Pacific?
The Future Of Precision-Strike Warfare—Strategic Dynamics Of Mature Military Revolutions, John D. Maurer
The Future Of Precision-Strike Warfare—Strategic Dynamics Of Mature Military Revolutions, John D. Maurer
Naval War College Review
The precision conventional revolution, which yielded early U.S. military successes, is entering a more mature phase. Future great-power wars could tend toward protracted conflicts as superpowers seek to coerce each other without escalating to nuclear warfare. The proliferation and massing of precision conventional weapons may worsen such conventional military stalemates, with each side eviscerating the other’s power-projection capabilities.

Perceptions, Practices, And Barriers Of Athletic Trainers In The Military Setting Using Patient-Reported Outcomes In Practice, Nicole M. Lee, Justin P. Young, Lindsey E. Eberman, Eric Post, Kenneth E. Games
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The majority of athletic trainers (ATs) recognize the importance of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in clinical practice but encounter unique barriers that limit their implementation. There are no studies that have investigated PROs in the military setting. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions, practices, and barriers to implementing PROs in the military setting. Methods: We used a cross-sectional, web-based survey design. Emails were sent to 365 potential participants and 67 were eligible to participate (response rate=18.4%, years practicing in military setting=5.9 ± 5.8years). Participants were invited to complete a web-based survey regarding the uses, benefits, and …

Experimental Verification Of Pch-Em Algorithm For Characterizing Dsern Image Sensors, Aaron J. Hendrickson, David P. Haefner, Nicholas R. Shade, Eric R. Fossum
Dartmouth Scholarship
The Photon Counting Histogram Expectation Maximization (PCH-EM) algorithm has recently been reported as a candidate method for the characterization of Deep Sub-Electron Read Noise (DSERN) image sensors. This work describes a comprehensive demonstration of the PCH-EM algorithm applied to a DSERN capable quanta image sensor. The results show that PCH-EM is able to characterize DSERN pixels for a large span of quanta exposure and read noise values. The per-pixel characterization results of the sensor are combined with the proposed Photon Counting Distribution (PCD) model to demonstrate the ability of PCH-EM to predict the ensemble distribution of the device. The agreement …

Flying By Ml Or Cnn Inversion Of Affine Transforms, Lloyd Van Warren
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes how to automate the reading of dials, gauges, and instruments using machine learning (ML) methods. This process can be described as analog to digital conversion through an air gap without any direct electronic connection. The goal is to convert the values of existing instruments into digital values for control and monitoring without requiring any intrusion, changes, or upgrades to the instruments being observed. Images of instrument faces can be distorted by various kinds of noise, but this can be overcome using a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) approach similar to handwriting recognition. One advantage of this …
The Voice Of The Singers At The Watering Places: Victory Songs As A Celebration Of Recreation, J Christian Doling
The Voice Of The Singers At The Watering Places: Victory Songs As A Celebration Of Recreation, J Christian Doling
Liberty Theological Review
Victory songs were sung by women to welcome home the men from victorious war. Some prophetic variants appeared from these songs that had a theology of salvation and recreation. Beside the message of the songs, the context of these songs also show that recreation was a major theme of these musical compositions. Warfare was about the expansion of creation from an ordered center in the Ancient Near East. For Israel the center was Yahweh’s presence with Israel being a new Eden. Recreation of the chaotic lands around Israel required that Israel went to war to subdue those lands and people. …
Remembering And Forgetting: The Commemoration Of The First World War And The Spanish Influenza Pandemic In Salt Lake City, Utah, Bethany Kathleen Gustafson
Remembering And Forgetting: The Commemoration Of The First World War And The Spanish Influenza Pandemic In Salt Lake City, Utah, Bethany Kathleen Gustafson
Theses and Dissertations
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, American culture has experienced a renewed interest in pandemic events, including the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919. Based on research carried out in cemeteries and monuments in Salt Lake City, Utah, this paper compares commemoration practices relating to the Spanish Influenza pandemic and the simultaneous events of First World War within the city. Such research provides evidence that warfare enjoys a greater presence in places of social memory than does disease, suggesting an inequality in the cultural value placed on different causes of death. This outcome is the result of numerous factors and …

Copyright And Political Campaigns: How Much Control Should A Copyright Owner Have Over The Use Of Their Musical Work In A Political Campaign, Jared Zim
University of Miami Business Law Review
Music often tells a powerful story, driving emotional connections. As a result, politicians rely on music in every aspect of their political campaigns from political advertisements to campaign rallies. There is a long history of such political uses of music, often without an artist’s permission. While most disputes over such uses have ended in either settlement or the campaign stopping use of the infringed work, former President Donald Trump’s unauthorized use of music on the campaign trail sparked countless artist complaints. The complaining musicians feared any implication that they endorsed Trump and did not want any association with a political …
Strengthening International Institutions By Enforcing Norms: The Way Forward For Prosecuting Aggression, Dr. Nadia Ahmad
Strengthening International Institutions By Enforcing Norms: The Way Forward For Prosecuting Aggression, Dr. Nadia Ahmad
San Diego International Law Journal
Strengthening institutions that enforce the prohibition on the use of force and prevent aggressive acts of war should be a priority in international law, as it struggles to respond collectively to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Aggression is both prohibited in the Charter of the United Nations and in the Rome Statute, and the United Nations Security Council is blocking enforcement action in both international institutions. This Article explores alternative avenues of accountability for the crime of aggression in international law, and recommends the United Nations General Assembly, with the government of Ukraine, establish a hybrid international tribunal for aggression …
Star Trek, Star Wars, Or Battlestar Galactica—The Occurring Privatization Of Space Exploration, And The Need For “Global” Regulations, Marty Levers
San Diego International Law Journal
Privatized space travel is not innately bad because of its commercial nature. Commercialization leads to efficient innovation; and our scientific pursuits benefit from advancements in technology in every space-related industry. This is not to say that privatized space travel is not without disgust and dissenters. As a dissenter, Buzz Aldrin questioned Elon Musk’s Mars proposal by arguing, “Well, now, when your [rocket] lands on Mars with people, is there going to be anything down there for you to live in or do?” Buzz Aldrin is not alone in his questioning of the motives behind mega corporations’ space projects. Billionaire-funded space …
Tax Fairness By Convention: A Defense Of Horizontal Equity, Ira K. Lindsay
Tax Fairness By Convention: A Defense Of Horizontal Equity, Ira K. Lindsay
Florida Tax Review
Horizontal equity is the principle that people who earn equal income should owe equal tax. It has gotten a bad name. Although horizontal equity remains a textbook criterion of tax fairness, scholarly literature is largely hostile. Scholars ranging from the legal theorist Louis Kaplow to philosophers Thomas Nagel and Liam Murphy question its conceptual coherence and normative significance. The crux of the case against horizontal equity is that it seems irrational to worry about the relationship between pre-tax income and tax obligations rather than determining tax policy in light of what our best theory of distributive justice tells us is …

The Black Sea Grain Initiative: Russia’S Strategic Blunder Or Diplomatic Coup?, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
International Law Studies
On July 22, 2022, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Türkiye, and the United Nations signed a groundbreaking agreement to allow for the safe transport of grain, related foodstuffs, and fertilizer from three Ukrainian ports to global markets. Concurrently, a second (lesser known) agreement was concluded between the United Nations and Russia that would allow the unimpeded export of Russian food and fertilizer (including raw materials to produce fertilizers) to world markets. These agreements were hailed as a critical solution for the impending global food crisis and the safety and security of neutral shipping in the Black Sea resulting from the Russia-Ukraine …

Filling the gap between theoretical and practical application, this collection of essays by leading scholars and practitioners revitalizes the application of virtue to the modern military environment and answers the question, “Why did the service component choose this value?” Case studies and vignettes in each chapter reinforce main arguments and drive further reflection. After reading this book, readers will not have to accept military-prescribed virtues at face value; they will have obtained an understanding and a moral map for dealing with ethical …
