Operational Research And Counter-Battery Fires In The Canadian Corps, 1917-18, Brendan Hogan Sep 2023

Operational Research And Counter-Battery Fires In The Canadian Corps, 1917-18, Brendan Hogan

Canadian Military History

This article examines the operational research conducted by the counter-battery staff office (CBO) in the headquarters of the Canadian Corps during the First World War. It challenges the argument presented by most historians of operational research, who contend that the discipline originated with the 1935 Tizard Committee and came to fruition during the Second World War and expands upon the initial inquiry performed by scholars J.S. Finan and W.J. Hurley in a 1997 journal article. While the staff of the CBO never used the term “operational research” to describe their scientific studies, they were undoubtedly its practitioners through their innovating, …

Empires Rise: An Approach To Worldbuilding In Modern Fantasy Fiction, Anthony John Rudd Sep 2023

Empires Rise: An Approach To Worldbuilding In Modern Fantasy Fiction, Anthony John Rudd

Masters Theses

Worldbuilding is a critical element to storytelling and involves much more than creating a setting for a narrative – it serves to establish a credible foundation on which authors give life to their creation. There are many great authors who have mastered the art of worldbuilding and their creations can serve as a primer for aspiring authors. This thesis explores critical elements of worldbuilding, provides examples from notable fantasy and science fiction authors such as Tolkien, Jordan, King, and others and explores my approach to incorporating those elements into my own writing.

Turning Heartache Into Hope: How Fantasy Reveals Spiritual Truth About Sin, Suffering, And Redemption, Sophia Raffaelle Bricker Sep 2023

Turning Heartache Into Hope: How Fantasy Reveals Spiritual Truth About Sin, Suffering, And Redemption, Sophia Raffaelle Bricker

Masters Theses

This paper examines the problem of evil and suffering through the literary genre of fantasy. Seminal texts written by Christians in this genre present the problem of sin and death through themes and representative characters but also tempers the reality of suffering with the presence of Christ figures, who bring redemption to the characters and story world through an act of sacrifice. Following the examples of these seminal fantasies and building on my personal experience of loss, I approach the problem of sin and suffering in excerpts from my novel in progress, The Mountain Pass Keeper, by presenting an older …

“Go, Then, To The Front As Temperate Men:” The U.S. Army, Temperance Advocacy, And Lessons Learned To 1873, Megan M.S. Nishikawa

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation examines the long history of attempted liquor controls applied within the American army, from pre-revolution to the Civil War, culminating with a close look at the Union’s Army of the Potomac. This work details how the Union’s battle to control the effects of intoxicating liquors and sober up drunk troops from the commencement of hostilities in 1861 to 1865 reflected the historic efforts of the antebellum temperance movement, and describes how the experience of war prepared the next generation of temperance crusaders to rebuild a more profoundly religious, effective, and female driven temperance movement in the post-war decade.

Does International Humanitarian Law Confer Undue Legitimacy On Violence In War?, Kieran R.J. Tinkler Sep 2023

Does International Humanitarian Law Confer Undue Legitimacy On Violence In War?, Kieran R.J. Tinkler

International Law Studies

International humanitarian law is lauded as a civilizing force that seeks to limit the effects of war for humanitarian reasons. There is, however, an increasing sense that IHL has facilitated rather than restrained military operations by conferring undue legitimacy on violence in war. This article focuses on the nature of the relationship between legitimacy and IHL to ascertain whether this is indeed the case. It concludes that, while IHL alone cannot confer "normative legitimacy" on battlefield conduct, it does frame "empirical legitimacy." Whether such legitimacy is unwarranted is, ultimately, best judged by reference to morality. Yet insistence on the pre-eminence …

China’S New Law On Foreign Relations: Transforming The Rules-Based International Order With Chinese Characteristics, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo

International Law Studies

In 2023 China adopted a comprehensive Law on Foreign Relations. Although the law is intended to shape China’s diplomatic relations and its cultural, economic, and other exchanges, as well as China’s relations with the United Nations and other international organizations, implementation of the law will be guided by (inter alia) Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. The law makes clear that China’s foreign relations will be conducted to uphold its system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, safeguard its sovereignty, unification and territorial integrity, and promote its economic and social development. This revisionist “rule by …

This paper highlights the need for our Rethinking Education towards a global common good and cultivating New Era Universities for the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR). 4IR represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work, and relate to one another. It is a new chapter in human development, enabled by extraordinary technological advances commensurate with those of the first, second, and third industrial revolutions. Indeed, the 4th Industrial Revolution measures up with the Post-Capitalist Society, involving policies catering to human living needs, enabling people to have a Neo-humanist outlook, and come together to form a universal and more evolved …

Resistance To Dna Interstrand Crosslinks In Escherichia Coli Arises Through Prevention Rather Than Repair, Travis Kim Worley Sep 2023

Resistance To Dna Interstrand Crosslinks In Escherichia Coli Arises Through Prevention Rather Than Repair, Travis Kim Worley

Dissertations and Theses

DNA interstrand crosslinks are particularly lethal lesions that form in DNA when certain molecules intercalate between complementary strands of DNA and form covalent bonds with both strands. Once formed, these lesions present an absolute block to replication and transcription, ultimately resulting in cell death. Because of this lethality, chemicals that form DNA interstrand crosslinks are found in nature as defensive chemicals produced by plants and microbes. Moreover, crosslinking agents have proven effective the treatment of dysplastic conditions and are often first line chemotherapeutics.

However, cancer cells can become resistant to DNA interstrand crosslinks. Unlike other DNA lesions, the double-stranded nature …

The Legal Boundaries Of (Digital) Information Or Psychological Operations Under International Humanitarian Law, Tilman Rodenhäuser Sep 2023

The Legal Boundaries Of (Digital) Information Or Psychological Operations Under International Humanitarian Law, Tilman Rodenhäuser

International Law Studies

“Information operations” or “psychological operations” have long been part of armed conflicts. Among Western militaries, they are commonly understood as the employment of communication or other means to influence the views, attitudes, or behavior of adversaries or civilian populations to achieve political and military objectives. Chinese military strategy describes “psychological offense and defense” as “a combat action that uses specific information and media to influence the psychology and behavior of the target object through rational propaganda, deterrence and emotional guidance based on strategic intentions and combat missions.” Likewise, Russian military doctrine elaborates on concepts such as “psychological warfare” and on …

The Hangman Followed The Feast, Maxwell C. Miller

Student Research and Creative Projects 2022-2023

This paper explores the dual nature of Alexander the Great’s policies of expansion during his reign from 336 to 323. It demonstrates the Persepolis was not an anomaly. Rather Alexander’s rule was more multifaceted than scholars have previously recognized. In places like Persepolis, Alexander would show his true side. As his power grew, he began to believe, he was, in fact, a god. In this logic those that resisted him would meet a punishment befitting those who disobeyed a deity. That day he would slaughter men, women, and children. That day he would burn the city to the ground, destroying …

Still Lacking Self-Reflection After All These Years? (De)Stabilizing Factors Of Transatlantic Relations According To German And Us Foreign Policy Experts Between 2011 And 2017, Ulrich Franke, Hermann Kurthen

Peer Reviewed Articles

This article compares the trends and theoretical positions found in the recent academic literature on the status and trajectory of transatlantic relations with the beliefs of 96 German and US foreign policy experts. The qualitative data are derived from open-ended in-depth interviews about the political, economic, and cultural factors that influence transatlantic cooperation and friction. Conducted in Berlin in 2011 and in Washington, D.C., in 2017, the interviews correspond with optimist and pessimist perceptions found in the academic literature and align roughly with realist, respectively, liberal/institutionalist and constructivist theoretical positions in International Relations theory and left/right political leanings. The study …

The Code Of Life And Death, Braden R. Leach Sep 2023

The Code Of Life And Death, Braden R. Leach

Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies

Biotechnology is advancing at an astonishing clip, but our safeguards are decades behind. Given new technologies and economies of scale, it is possible for nefarious actors to assemble deadly viruses from scratch using synthetic DNA ordered off the internet. The Select Agents statute helps to prevent malicious actors from acquiring dangerous pathogens, but the Department of Health and Human Services has interpreted it to not cover synthetic DNA. Recognizing the gap, HHS issued guidance recommending that gene synthesis companies verify their customers to ensure their legitimacy and screen genetic sequences for matches to pathogen sequences. Unsurprisingly, voluntary guidance has not …

From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith Sep 2023

From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper examines the transformation of the Spartan military tradition from the Persian Wars to the Theban Ascendency. The Battle of Thermopylae marked the height of the Spartan military ethos. However, the strain of their military culture forced the Spartans to dilute their old mores over time. Their old cultural and military practices became unsustainable as military innovation increased. The Battle of Sphacteria clearly illustrated the deterioration of Spartan military ethos and the need for innovation. Straddling the line between tradition and innovation, Spartan military ethos received its death blow at the Battle of Leuctra.
