Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal Oct 2023

Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The article analyses early European knowledge about Belu, a historical region in Central Timor which, although “belonging” mostly to the Dutch colonial sphere, still had a position of cultural-ritual centrality on a Timor-wide level. Before the mid-nineteenth century, the region was, from a Dutch point of view, largely unknown in terms of political hierarchies, social structure, and economic opportunities. However, three officially commissioned authors, A.G. Brouwer, W.L. Rogge, and H.J. Grijzen, wrote extensive reports about Belu in 1849, 1865, and 1904, in which they attempted to understand local society and the opportunities they offered the colonial state. The article explores …

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Mapping Of Air Quality Monitoring In Cairo Using Sentinel-5 Satellite Data And Google Earth Engine, Sara Sameh, Fawzi Zarzoura, Mahmoud El-Mewafi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Air pollutants including Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and Sulphur dioxide (SO2) cause serious damage to human health and the environment. This research aims to assess built-up seasonal variations of air pollution maps over Cairo city in Egypt using remote sensing data. LST data was obtained from the MODIS Terra Satellite Data, specifically the MOD11A1 V6 product, from January to December 2022. The Sentinel-5 project utilizes the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) sensor to capture images across different spectral bands, enabling precise monitoring of air pollution levels. The concentration data of NO2, CO, and SO2 were extracted from Sentinel-5P using …

Nanozymatic Activity Of Zr-Based Mofs: Tuning The Coordinatively Unsaturated Metal Sites For Enhancing Hydrolytic Activity Toward Peptide Bonds, Xu Keyu, Xia Liwei, Xing Keyu, Cheng Yunhui, Xu Zhou Oct 2023

Nanozymatic Activity Of Zr-Based Mofs: Tuning The Coordinatively Unsaturated Metal Sites For Enhancing Hydrolytic Activity Toward Peptide Bonds, Xu Keyu, Xia Liwei, Xing Keyu, Cheng Yunhui, Xu Zhou

Food and Machinery

Objective: To develop efficient and stable artificial proteases and investigate the relationship between coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and hydrolysis activity of peptide bond. Methods: Three zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) with different coordinatively unsaturated sites (12-connected Zr-MOF, 6-connected Zr-MOF, and 4-connected Zr-MOF) were prepared to modulate protein hydrolase activity. The protein hydrolase activity of three Zr-MOFs was evaluated by the hydrolysis rate of bis-glycopeptide (Gly-Gly) as an indicator. Subsequently, soy protein, surimi protein and casein were hydrolyzed using the best performing protein hydrolase nanoenzymes, and the hydrolysis products were separated using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and the hydrolysis efficiency of the three …

Differentiating between real and imaginary places on a map is not necessarily a strength of undergraduates--or ChatGPT--in a basic world regional geography course. Using a video, The 15 Countries that people think are FAKE, as a launching tool, students undertake an exercise in determining which places are real.

Design And Simulation Of A Location Privacy Protection Scheme Based On Zero-Knowledge Proof For Military Iot, Mingjie Shi, Chengyu Xie, Chuanfu Zhang Oct 2023

Design And Simulation Of A Location Privacy Protection Scheme Based On Zero-Knowledge Proof For Military Iot, Mingjie Shi, Chengyu Xie, Chuanfu Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In the military Internet of Things (IoT) combat environment, the location privacy issue becomes a key challenge. An innovative location privacy protection scheme based on zero-knowledge proof is proposed to ensure that in unreliable communication channels, the location information of combat units can be verified without revealing their specific coordinates, so as to achieve the goal of protecting sensitive location information. Based on the idea of cryptography, by using zero-knowledge proof, through algebraic circuit, rank-1 constraint system(R1CS), quadratic arithmetic programs(QAP), and other steps, the position coordinate information proof problem is transformed into a point verification problem on a polynomial …

Becoming Avian: Amazonian Featherworks From The John P. O’Neill Collection, Madeline R. Blanchard

LSU Master's Theses

In 1998 ornithologist John P. O’Neill donated an ethnographic collection of 434 objects he was gifted from researcher Charles Fugler or purchased from persons in Pucallpa, Peru, during his time there studying Amazonian birds. I evaluate 18 feathered objects. According to O’Neill, the cultures responsible for the items are the Cashinahua, Aguaruna, Achual, and Arawak. Eighteen of these items are beautifully crafted arrangements of feathered clothing and objects. The collection includes five headdresses, five bouquets, a hat, a necklace, three tassels, a backrack, a scarf, and a hair tie.

The objects and the seventeen species of bird used are active …

The Impact Of The Ukrainian-Russian Conflict On Military Modernization In The Eastern Flank, M Grochlaska

UBT International Conference

The Ukrainian-Russian conflict that erupted in 2014 has become one of the most important geopolitical events in the international arena and has had a significant impact on the situation in Eastern Europe. This presentation aims to analyse the effects of this conflict on the modernisation of armed forces in the Eastern Flank region, in particular the NATO and Eastern Partnership countries.

In the context of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, many countries on the Eastern Flank have undertaken significant modernisation efforts in their armed forces. The introduction of new technologies, the purchase of advanced weaponry and the development of defence capabilities have …

Cyber Threats Risk Analysis In State Policies In Guaranteeing National Security, Bahri Gashi, Bashkim Smakaj, Ngadhnjim Brovina, Arian Kadriu Oct 2023

Cyber Threats Risk Analysis In State Policies In Guaranteeing National Security, Bahri Gashi, Bashkim Smakaj, Ngadhnjim Brovina, Arian Kadriu

UBT International Conference

Cyber threats, generally including hybrid warfare, are among the greatest challenges that states and organizations are facing in modern times. This is due to the significant evolution of technology in recent years, which has made a vast amount of information available to individuals and organizations. Such threats can cause serious damage to critical infrastructure, such as transportation, energy, and water resources, as well as communication and financial systems. They can also impact a country's national security and political stability.

To address this threat, states have implemented various policies and measures to ensure national security against the backdrop of cyber security …

Impact Of Niger Delta Crisis And National Security In Nigeria: Appraisal Of The Amnesty Programme Granted, Kamal Tasiu Abdullahi, Bashir Dan-Inna Oct 2023

Impact Of Niger Delta Crisis And National Security In Nigeria: Appraisal Of The Amnesty Programme Granted, Kamal Tasiu Abdullahi, Bashir Dan-Inna

UBT International Conference

The fragility of the nation’s take-off, as the historical antecedent, created Nigeria’s socio-economic, cultural and political woes. The Nigerian historical developments are better explained by the adage that says “when a fowl perches on the rope, it and the rope automatically become unsettled.” This largely remains so till this moment in Nigeria’s history as the various events portend particularly in the Niger Delta region. The character and attitude of the Federal Government to the agitation in the region is well known and documented. The use of force to keep the people down and exploit their oil and gas resources could …

The Challenges Of Kosova In The Field Of Counterintelligenc, Fatos Rushiti, Llokman Mirtezani Oct 2023

The Challenges Of Kosova In The Field Of Counterintelligenc, Fatos Rushiti, Llokman Mirtezani

UBT International Conference

The latest attack in the Monastery of Banjska by a group of Serbian terrorists makes the security sphere in Kosova even more challenging. This happens at a time when the state is not in the most favorable geopolitical position in the region, primarily due to the lack of a political agreement with Serbia. Serbia, not only through hybrid warfare but also through terrorist actions, is attempting to create chaos within the territory of Kosova. This hostile effort by Serbia cannot happen without the assistance of potential collaborators in Kosova. In this context, my analysis aims to highlight the facts and …

Vulnerability In Times Of War: The Necessity Of The Moral Third, Hille Haker Oct 2023

Vulnerability In Times Of War: The Necessity Of The Moral Third, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Vulnerability as a critique of the one-sidedness of the principle of autonomy is at risk of overemphasizing the positive dimension of vulnerability. Moreover, in the discourse on vulnerability, the threat of dehumanization (or moral vulnerability) has not been scrutinized enough ethically. Therefore, the ethics of vulnerability is insufficient when faced with the force of war that requires the conceptualization of vulnerability for political-ethics. The Russian war in Ukraine demonstrates this weakness in a striking way: the called-for openness to the other as well as an active form of nonviolence, as promoted by Judith Butler, may not be an option in …

Awakening The Law Of Contraband In The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Martin Fink Oct 2023

Awakening The Law Of Contraband In The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Martin Fink

International Law Studies

Following the collapse of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, both Russia and Ukraine announced measures against shipping that may have introduced counter-contraband operations into the maritime dimension of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The law of contraband, which is at the heart of the law of naval warfare, regulates such operations. The law of contraband has, however, not been often used in current conflicts and some of its details are not crystalized as generally accepted law. Awakening this instrument in the current conflict brings questions for both belligerents and non-State parties, some of whom have adopted a position of qualified neutrality that …

Arms Control And Deterrence In The Age Of Cross-Domain Coercion, Damon Coletta Oct 2023

Arms Control And Deterrence In The Age Of Cross-Domain Coercion, Damon Coletta

Space and Defense

For deterrence, now, first seek arms control. The old relationship linking deterrence, defense, and arms control served U.S. policy makers for decades during the Cold War. It was manifest through the Spirit of Geneva (1955) and the Reykjavik Summit (1986). Much later, during the rise of cross-domain coercion and following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the same idea reemerged in NATO’s Warsaw Communique (2016).

Communicating Cyber Consequences, Timothy Goines Oct 2023

Communicating Cyber Consequences, Timothy Goines

Space and Defense

More consideration ought to be accorded “loud” cyber weapons for signaling resolve in 21st century deterrence contests.

“Deterrence is at times a necessary or useful instrument of foreign policy, but the correct and prudent use of deterrence strategy is by no means self-evident or easily determined in all circumstances.”

In their seminal text, Alexander L. George and Richard Smoke thoroughly examined the topic of deterrence, tracing its historical roots and conducting case studies on its use. The product of this intense study was a formula that encapsulates the essence of deterrence theory. “In its simplest form, deterrence is merely a …

China's Military Space Strategy: A Dialectical Materialism Perspective, Sam Rouleau Oct 2023

China's Military Space Strategy: A Dialectical Materialism Perspective, Sam Rouleau

Space and Defense

China’s military space strategy accommodates in significant ways the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) ideological commitment to dialectical materialism. This Marxian commitment persists and manifests in China’s investment in space power despite the Party’s widely acknowledged development of state capitalism to guide China’s economy.
