Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses challenges with detecting attacks on computer networks within a Federated Learning (FL) framework, when labeled instances are few. We explore the integration of active learning (AL) and semi-supervised learning (SSL). AL efficiently uses data that would otherwise be wasted or require substantial time for labeling. SSL provides capacity to train models that have a limited amount of labeled data, by utilizing additional unlabeled data that is available. We show how FL combined with AL or SSL can realize a detection system that adapts and trains quickly to new networks, reducing the total amount of data labeling needed. …

Hit The Reset Button: Video Games, Platforms, And Changing Antitrust Vertical Merger Policy, Cahill Maffei
Hit The Reset Button: Video Games, Platforms, And Changing Antitrust Vertical Merger Policy, Cahill Maffei
Student Scholarship
For decades, antitrust law has treated vertical mergers as almost per se legal. Courts and scholars embraced the economic theories of the Chicago School, which predict that vertical mergers almost always lead to efficiencies that benefit consumers through lower prices. As a result, vertical mergers are almost never challenged and those that are usually fail. More recently, politicians, regulators, and pundits have become increasingly concerned with the growing concentration of wealth and power among America’s large technology corporations. Part of their dominance can be explained by the rapid rise of platform business models, which through network effects can entrench dominant …

Droned In: The Acquisition And Motivational Differences Between Autocracies And Democracies, Pete R. Hagan
ALL - Honors Theses
Drone technology has become a revolutionary development in warfare. They allow a nation to conduct offensive operations far from any soldier or base. As such, they have spread rapidly over the past few decades to incorporate many of the world’s foremost military powers. This thesis sought to discover the motivations and methods of acquisition of drones between different regime types. The research found a correlation between autocracies and democracies importing drones from similarly aligned states. Secondly, autocracies were found to be motivated to acquire drones due to a foreign supply excess and democracies were motivated by a domestic desire for …
The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos
The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos
English (MA) Theses
The Dictator Novel in YA Latinx Fantasy explores the power of the dictator novel in Latinx literature, specifically within the young adult fantasy genre. Drawing upon the work of Jennifer Harford-Vargas to examine the relationship between the forms of power and the power of the narrative form and how this creates ways to defy and rebel against repressive authoritarian figures. The young adult Latinx fantasy novel calls for a challenge to the authoritarian presence that occupies these imagined worlds that reach beyond the cycle of oppression and injustices that have silenced generation after generation. These YA Latinx fantasy novels use …
Mrs. Dalloway As A Window For Understanding Life, Kristen Venegas
Mrs. Dalloway As A Window For Understanding Life, Kristen Venegas
English (MA) Theses
Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway may be dismissed as fiction, and fiction consequently is dismissed as fantasy. However, the novel enables readers to practice an intellectual exercise of meta-awareness that extends beyond the pages and onto real world phenomena. Under a cognitive neuroscience perspective, Mrs. Dalloway is a literary masterpiece due to its hyper- realistic execution of the intimacies of life. Through the narrative style of free-indirect discourse, Woolf illustrates what occurs in the minds of characters as they develop their own perceptions of reality and identity, exposes the fear and inadequacies of mankind’s distress in times of chaos and disorder …

Greetings in the name of Christ! Across two seminaries, across several states, and across this Advent and Christmastide, we have gathered devotions from several students- both at CTSFW and CSL- to guide us in our consideration of this season. As new theologians and workers in the Church, we have a chance to encourage our brothers and sisters and stir each other up to look to Christ. So who is this Christ? He is the culmination of the entire Scriptures, and so we find Him everywhere.
The books of Ezra and Haggai are center stage in the Advent portion: God provides …

The Future Of Terrorist Use Of Improvised Explosive Devices: Getting In Front Of An Evolving Threat, Austin C. Doctor, Samuel Hunter
Psychology Faculty Publications
Because of their outsized impact—as well as the wide availability of device components—violent extremists in the United States consider improvised explosive devices a valuable part of their arsenal. They are easy to make, difficult to combat, and cause significant harm and disruption. Yet this threat is not static. Violent extremists continue to innovate, drawing on emerging technologies and creative problem solving. The onus of initiative requires that the counterterrorism mission community looks over the horizon to identify emerging threats. In support of this need, the authors offer a forward-leaning taxonomy of emerging threats related to terrorist use of IEDs in …
The Bronze Harvester: Ravaging And Plundering In Greek Warfare, Nicholas Lindberg
The Bronze Harvester: Ravaging And Plundering In Greek Warfare, Nicholas Lindberg
Classics
This article argues that the purpose of ravaging in Greek warfare was not to goad the enemy into fighting or to cause systematic economic harm but to facilitate plundering. The cereal harvest was commonly chosen as a time for invasion, because it maximized the amount of plunder an invading force could expect to find in the enemy countryside. While ravagers were unlikely to cause permanent economic harm to a community as a whole, they could imperil the livelihoods of individual farmers, both directly through theft and destruction and indirectly by preventing farmers from processing the harvest in a timely fashion. …

Black Land: Research Note On The Heirs’ Property To Poverty Pipeline In Louisiana, Ifeyinwa F. Davis, Lauren Hall
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Successful heirs’ property reform—the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act (UPHPA)—is widespread in the United States. Despite these advancements, Louisiana falls behind. Louisiana is the only state in the Deep South that has not enacted legal reform to protect heirs’ property owners. Heirs’ property locks many Black Americans into persistent poverty and economic oppression, eliminating generations of Black American wealth. This research note describes and examines these issues. Articulating the history of systemic legal oppression of Black land ownership, this article demonstrates how the current legal state shuns Black Americans economically and sociopolitically disadvantages them. It also examines how enacting …
