Perhaps Russia’s most notorious disinformation campaign to date was Operation INFEKTION, an activemeasures campaign designed to persuade the world that the United States was responsible for the creation of the AIDS virus (Boghardt, 2009; Selvage & Nehring, 2019). The effort, perhaps more properly referred to by its Russian codename, Operation Denver, began in 1983 with the planting of a fictious letter to the editor in The Patriot, an Indian newspaper created some years earlier by the KGB for the purposes of spreading pro-Soviet propaganda. The letter, entitled “AIDS may Invade India,” was purported to be written by a respected American …

Echoes Of The Spanish Civil War In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
Echoes Of The Spanish Civil War In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
Journal of Tolkien Research
The Spanish Civil War had a profound effect on the literature of the 1930s and 40s; however, it has been almost neglected in Tolkien studies. This article examines both Tolkien's potential views of the Civil War and their effect on his writings of the late 1930s such as the emerging story of Numenor. The dearth of primary sources can be rectified by studying the position on the War taken by other British Catholic intellectuals. Very likely Tolkien viewed the Civil War primarily as a religious conflict and was shaken by the highly publicized cases of anti-clerical violence. The combination of …

Clausewitzian Theory Of War In The Age Of Cognitive Warfare, Amber Brittain-Hale, Amber Brittain-Hale
Clausewitzian Theory Of War In The Age Of Cognitive Warfare, Amber Brittain-Hale, Amber Brittain-Hale
Education Division Scholarship
We can reconceptualise warfare by contrasting Clausewitz with the modern practice of cognitive warfare, as evidenced by Ukraine’s defence methodologies. The strategic orchestration of ‘infopolitik’ and the sophisticated use of social media can shape narratives and public perception. This article revisits Clausewitz’s tenet of war as a political instrument and juxtaposes it with contemporary conflict’s multidimensional tactics. By scrutinising Ukraine’s digital and psychological warfare tactics, one may question the applicability of Clausewitz’s framework, seeking to understand if these novel dimensions of warfare compel a redefinition or an expansion of his thesis to navigate the complexities of contemporary geopolitical confrontations.

Ai Empire: Unraveling The Interlocking Systems Of Oppression In Generative Ai's Global Order, Jasmina Tacheva, Srividya Ramasubramanian
Media Studies - All Scholarship
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to captivate the collective imagination through the latest generation of generative AI models such as DALL-E and ChatGPT, the dehumanizing and harmful features of the technology industry that have plagued it since its inception only seem to deepen and intensify. Far from a “glitch” or unintentional error, these endemic issues are a function of the interlocking systems of oppression upon which AI is built. Using the analytical framework of “Empire,” this paper demonstrates that we live not simply in the “age of AI” but in the age of AI Empire. Specifically, we show that …

Haiti: Confronting An Immense Challenge, Irwin Stotzky
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
This article analyzes the history of Haiti, from its origins as a slave colony of France, which was the richest colony in the Americas, to its war of independence leading to the first Black independent nation in the Americas, to its economic re-enslavement under the power of France and then the United States. The article discusses the great harm the French caused the Haitian people by imposing through force a ransom of billions of dollars that has led Haiti to its present position of being on the brink of becoming a failed state, with all of the disastrous consequences for …

Beyond The Bell: Rebuilding Care, Civic Learning And Creativity Within Youth Spaces, Michelle R. Haapala
Masters Projects
The purpose of this research is to investigate high school age students’ opportunities within formal classroom settings to engage in care, civic learning, and creativity within a suburban, publicly-funded charter school. This study used thematic analysis and coding methods to organize and find patterns in the qualitative data from surveys distributed to education professionals at Canton Preparatory High School in Canton, Michigan. The goal is to establish a foundation of the perception of care, civic learning, and creativity within school environments and classroom settings. Overall, education professionals rated these categories positively, but with a closer investigation, a disconnect is found. …

Human-Robot Interactions: Insights From Experimental And Evolutionary Social Sciences, Eric Schniter
ESI Working Papers
"Experimental research in the realm of human-robot interactions has focused on the behavioral and psychological influences affecting human interaction and cooperation with robots. A robot is loosely defined as a device designed to perform agentic tasks autonomously or under remote control, often replicating or assisting human actions. Robots can vary widely in form, ranging from simple assembly line machines performing repetitive actions to advanced systems with no moving parts but with artificial intelligence (AI) capable of learning, problem-solving, communicating, and adapting to diverse environments and human interactions. Applications of experimental human-robot interaction research include the design, development, and implementation of …

Evaluating Militant Decision-Making With Information Science: The Irish Republican Movement During The "Troubles", Joshua C. Eastin, Emily Kalah Gade, Michael Gabbay
Evaluating Militant Decision-Making With Information Science: The Irish Republican Movement During The "Troubles", Joshua C. Eastin, Emily Kalah Gade, Michael Gabbay
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Why do militant groups decide to escalate or deescalate their use of violence in conflict? Examining the case of the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland, we analyze groups that adopt violence as a political strategy and evaluate factors that influence its application. To do so, we adopt a novel empirical approach to the study of militant groups. Drawn from information science, this approach enables estimation of variable influence and uncertainty within structured case studies, and is thus ideal for topics such as militant decision-making where systematic data collection is difficult.

Administrative Convenience Or Deliberate Reform? The Impacts Of The Colonial Judicial Legacy Of The Pre-Colonial Justice System In South-Western Nigeria, Adewale Adekunle Adeyeye
Administrative Convenience Or Deliberate Reform? The Impacts Of The Colonial Judicial Legacy Of The Pre-Colonial Justice System In South-Western Nigeria, Adewale Adekunle Adeyeye
LLM Theses
In pre-colonial times, the ethnic groups that independently existed in the territory now called Nigeria had organized systems of government. However, the sweeping force of nineteenth-century colonialism erased most of these pre-colonial governments’ institutions and replaced them with the British system. Notably, in South-Western Nigeria (Yorubaland), historical evidence revealed the existence of a constitutional monarchy with organized branches of government. Especially, the pre-colonial judicial branch/justice system of the Yoruba monarchy was radically altered by colonialism. Using the interdisciplinary methodology, this research answered questions related to the structures and procedures of the pre-colonial justice system in South-Western Nigeria and how it …

Gadianton Robbers As Guerrilla Warriors
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Guerrilla warfare has become depressingly familiar to us from places like China, Nicaragua, Angola, Cuba, Korea, the Spanish Sahara, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Although guerrilla tactics have received much attention and achieved notable success in the so-called "Cold War," they are not really new. On the contrary, they can be identified in ancient times-and the Book of Mormon provides a particularly clear example of them.
Temple Bibliography
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Temple worship and service were common elements in ancient Near Eastern societies. Connected with the temple system were various ritual practices. Present-day scholars find fascination and mystery while studying these sanctuaries and their environs, and seem never to exhaust the possibilities in writing about new discoveries.
Armor In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The types of armor used in various civilizations are determined by a combination of technology, natural resources, economy, military practices, and artistic conventions. Although there are few detailed descriptions of armor in the Book of Mormon, the basic pattern can be outlined and is quite unlike the armor of Western Europe.

The text of Richard L. Anderson's 1988 first annual Book of Mormon Lecture is now available. Entitled "Religious Validity: The Sacramental Covenants in 3 Nephi," this paper demonstrates the covenantal nature of the teachings of Christ in the New and Old Testaments, a crucial feature of doctrine that was lost in the Apostasy.

Inoculant To Influence: Cultivating Critical Citizenship By Foregrounding Ontology Through Kenneth Burke And Walter Fisher’S Rhetorical Frameworks, Mark Griffin
English Department Theses
Scholars interested in exploring the potency of the writing modality of critical pedagogy for molding students into proactive citizens will find the integration of Kenneth Burke’s Dramatism and Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm instrumental, offering tools essential for cultivating a rhetorical awareness adept at navigating narratives in the 21st century. Synthesizing Burke’s rhetorical dialectic between the nature of reality and our understanding of it with Fisher’s concept that the human condition is a narrative condition yields insights into the critical writing process. This integration fosters a rhetorical awareness, serving as an inoculant to influence, countering the prevailing persuasive elements within today’s …
