Native American and Alaska Native (NA/AN) persons are resilient and have learned to overcome the intergenerational effects of colonization and find new ways to be Native American and Alaska Native in this contemporary life. Learning and well-being are integral values for Native American and Alaska Native people, but finding an appropriate way to approach education and learning can be difficult for Native American and Alaska Native people, especially when historically, the colonial-based systems have been created for them to fail. Because cultural matching and identity safety (CM/IS) for Native American and Alaska Native people in other environments (e.g., psychotherapy, child-welfare …

Trends in advanced sciences and technology
Background: Benzo[h]quinolines have attracted a lot of interest because of their biological characteristics, especially their capacity to impede cell proliferation, for this reason it is essential to utilize their high activity for new, powerful anti-cancer agents’ discovery. Objective: The main objectives are to synthesize de-novo benzo[h]quinolines and fused analogues then evaluate their anti-cancer activities. Methods: Our target compounds 1a-d were prepared through Knoevenagel condensation followed by Michael addition. Compounds 1a-d were further cyclized via reactions with different reagents particularly, formic acid, formamide, acetic anhydride and carbon disulfide to obtain fused derivatives 2-5 (a-d) respectively. Structures …

Elaboration Of Diquinanes To Access Trifunctional Angular Triquinanes And Designed Dna Polymerase Α Inhibitors, Spencer M. Webber
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Natural products are of great significance to the pharmaceutical industry in the development of new drugs. Diquinane or bicyclo[3.3.0]octane is a conspicuous structural unit existing in the carbo-frameworks of a wide range of natural products such as alkaloids and terpenoids. These diquinane-containing molecules not only exhibit intriguing architectures, but also showcase a broad spectrum of significant bioactivities, which draw widespread attention from the global synthetic community. A more specific group of compounds containing a diquinane moiety with one extra 5-membered ring are called the angular triquinanes. In this work, we have developed a general synthetic scheme to the angular triquinanes. We …

UAVs are becoming a crucial tool in modern warfare, primarily due to their cost-effectiveness, risk reduction, and ability to perform a wider range of activities. The use of autonomous UAVs to conduct strike missions against highly valuable targets is the focus of this research. Due to developments in ledger technology, smart contracts, and machine learning, such activities formerly carried out by professionals or remotely flown UAVs are now feasible. Our study provides the first in-depth analysis of challenges and potential solutions for successful implementation of an autonomous UAV mission.

Often referred to as “revolving door” restrictions, the U.S. Government has devised numerous laws, policies and procedures designed to combat unethical or anti-competitive conduct that may stem from a Government employee’s decision to leave federal service. The laws range from ethics restrictions designed to minimize the appearance of impropriety while a federal employee endeavors to leave the Government, to criminal laws, which seek to punish conflicts of interest and improper conduct that may occur after Government service concludes.
In addition to the ethical and criminal considerations that must be taken into account when navigating the Government’s myriad post-Government employment restrictions, …

This article provides an explanation of the unique and critical role of members of the Service Judge Advocate General’s Corps, not only as attorneys providing legal services to commanders, staff, personnel, and family members, but also as Guardians of Ethics for the military, the Profession of Arms. Moreover, military lawyers are key leaders who are responsible to lead or guide others to the right ethical decision. And when Judge Advocates are not present at the table to provide sage, educated, measured, advice—or fail to speak up and address potential ethical issues that arise or they are ignored— military leaders do …

A Legal Herstory Of Wwii ‘Comfort Women’ — Chapters: Past, Present, And Beyond, Linny Kit Tong Ng
A Legal Herstory Of Wwii ‘Comfort Women’ — Chapters: Past, Present, And Beyond, Linny Kit Tong Ng
LL.M. Essays & Theses
This paper delves into the legal accountability and historical narrative, which go hand in hand, surrounding the comfort women system implemented by the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII. These women, including my late grandmother from South Korea, were forced into sexual slavery, servicing Japanese soldiers across the Asia-Pacific. Despite being one of the most significant atrocities in history, with victims from 10 countries and between 20,000 to 500,000 individuals, the plight of comfort women remains relatively unheard of.
The politicization of the comfort women movement has been a barrier to both acknowledgment and justice. My grandmother's silence for 80 years …

Women And Peace Theory And Civil Conflict Intensity, Byung-Deuk Woo, Hoshik Nam
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Do improved women’s descriptive representation in legislative branches and women’s participation in civil society decrease the intensity of civil conflicts? Is the impact of women’s presence in legislative branches on the conflict intensity magnified by women’s participation in civil society, and vice versa? In this study, we aim to expand the constructivist argument that equal gender roles in politics and civil society can bring about less intensive internal armed conflicts. Relying on time-series cross-national data on 151 countries from 1960 to 2016, we demonstrate that the increases in women’s descriptive representation in parliaments and women’s participation in civil society tend …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Targeting dysregulated protease expression and/or abnormal substrate proteolysis, highly selective inhibition of pathogenic proteases by monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) presents an attractive therapeutic approach for the treatment of diseases including cancer. Herein, we report a functional selection method for protease inhibitory mAbs by periplasmic co-expression of three recombinant proteins-a protease of interest, an antibody Fab library, and a modified β-lactamase TEM-1. We validate this approach by isolation of highly selective and potent mAbs inhibiting human matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9).
Evil, Ontology, And Scripture: A Diachronic Analysis Of Augustine Of Hippo's Privatio Boni Concept, Jamie G. Boucher
Evil, Ontology, And Scripture: A Diachronic Analysis Of Augustine Of Hippo's Privatio Boni Concept, Jamie G. Boucher
Dissertations
Augustine of Hippo’s Privatio Boni concept—the idea that evil is not a substance, but the privation of good in a substance—is the most influential early systematic theodical attempt within Christianity to exculpate a good God from responsibility for evil. By approaching Privatio Boni as the intricate interplay of Augustine’s views on evil, ontology, and Scripture, this dissertation aims to clarify misunderstandings surrounding the concept and determine if there is biblical warrant for it. Chapter 1 addresses issues of background, problem, purpose, and justification before introducing a delimited three-staged methodology of establishing context, engaging in diachronic analysis, and conducting a comparative …

Historical Trauma Informed Approach To Treatment: A Proposed Suicide Prevention Program For Native American Youth, Christine E. Faris
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Suicide is a significant public health concern across the world. It is the second leading cause of death for children and young adults ages 10-34 (CDC, 2016). In 2021, suicide rates were highest among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons, and AI/AN youths had the highest rates of suicide compared to their same-aged peers from other racial and ethnic groups (Stone, Mack, & Qualters, 2021). Historical trauma, or unresolved trauma caused by colonization that gets passed down from generation to generation, has been used as a framework for understanding the high rates of social problems and suicide that plague AI/AN communities. …

Production And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Botulinum Toxin Produced In Nicotiana Benthamiana, Kornchanok Sangprasat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Botulism is an uncommon but serious neurological condition caused by the botulinum toxin produced by the gram-positive bacterium named Clostridium botulinum. Common symptoms of botulism include muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, respiratory failure, muscle weakness, and potentially death. Currently, two types of antitoxin are used: equine-derived heptavalent antitoxin and human-derived immunoglobulin (BabyBIG®). However, treatment with heptavalent antitoxin may lead to hypersensitivity reactions, while BabyBIG®, which is produced in low yield, is used only for children. This research focuses on developing three anti-BoNT monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), 1B18, C25, and M2, which will be produced using Nicotiana benthamiana as a …

The Role Of The Moscow Patriarchate In Supporting The Russian-Ukrainian War, Bohdan Synchak
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article examines the role of the Moscow Patriarchate in supporting the Russian-Ukrainian war. It provides numerous examples of the Russian Orthodox Church’s (ROC) endorsement of Putin’s state ideology. The complexities of the ROC’s interactions with its branches abroad are outlined, highlighting both the alignment and contradictions in the statements of ROC leaders in Ukraine, the United States, Estonia, and other countries where public support for the war by representatives of the Moscow Patriarchate has been observed. The study tracks changes in the rhetoric of the ROC’s leader, Patriarch Kirill, from the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in …

An Intersectional Analysis Of Findings From Humboldt County: The California Cannabis Worker And Equity Survey, Jennifer A. Smith
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study explores how intersectional axes of identity, particularly gender and race, shape the experiences of precarity and resistance among cannabis workers in Humboldt County amid the industry's ongoing transition to legalization. Drawing on survey data from a diverse sample of 58 cannabis workers, the analysis revealed complex dimensions of precarity, including structural, physical, socioemotional, and material issues. Findings indicate that BIPOC workers, particularly men, face heightened structural precarity compared to their white counterparts, while the intersection of race and gender exacerbated vulnerabilities for BIPOC women and beyond binary individuals. Despite these challenges, workers demonstrated resilience and advocacy, emphasizing their …

This Essay interrogates the reasoning behind the retrenchment toward LGBTQ rights progress that has taken place since marriage equality. With marriage rights for same-sex couples now "on the books," the Supreme Court's treatment of same-sex couples in both Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Comm'n and 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis reveals the status quo's hesitancy to recognize same-sex relationships on equal footing. Retrenchment, however, only describes the moment itself; it alludes to but offers no comprehensive or satisfying theory that identifies the motives behind the moves. This Essay theorizes from within the context of the Supreme Court's LGBTQ …

In Silent Covenants: Brown v. Board of Education and the Unfulfilled Hopes For Racial Reform, the late Derrick Bell refined his theory of racial progress in the United States by merging his interest convergence and racial sacrifice theses into a theoretical “two-sided coin” he called “racial fortuity.”1 Bell’s original interest convergence thesis posited that racial progress for Blacks would only occur if their interests in obtaining equality for themselves and the interests of the dominant White establishment in granting such equality “converged.”2 This theory famously underpinned Bell’s interpretation of Brown and the Supreme Court’s eagerness to overturn …

Chemical biological radiological nuclear threats are at an important point in the agenda of world health today, as theycan cause mass deaths. B. mallei attracts attention as a potential biological warfare agent due to its features such as multidrug resistance,a rapid transmission mechanism via aerosol, the absence of a complete treatment protocol for the infection it causes, and the absence ofan approved vaccine for protection against the bacteria. B. mallei suspect samples must be studied by experienced personnel in biosafetylevel III laboratories. B mallei is a difficult and troublesome pathogen to diagnose and many unknowns about B. mallei today. Therefore, the …

Crop damage attributed to pest birds is an important problem, particularly in low-income countries. This paper describes a prototype system for pest bird detection using a Conv1D neural network model followed by scaring actions to reduce the presence of pest birds on farms. Acoustic recorders were deployed on farms for data collection, supplemented by acoustic libraries. The sounds of pest bird species were identified and labeled. The labeled data were used in Edge Impulse to train a tinyML Conv1D model to detect birds of interest. The model was deployed on Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense (nodes) and XIAO (Base station) …

Companies seeking to do business in Africa often focus more on challenges they need to address, rather than opportunities presented to them. The need to manage their investments across diverse countries, population profiles, infrastructure development levels, and local capabilities is viewed in terms of complexity. However, improved situational understanding will better inform investment decisions regarding product movements among points of origin, production, and consumption. Several aspects of logistics may be considered in this regard, but we focus on customer-facing logistics. We assume that few companies have the capability and resources to both produce and deliver products to end-buyers in a …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This creative dissertation highlights the feminist leadership qualities of a social revolutionist, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a native of Abeokuta, Nigeria. Her struggle for equity and justice profoundly encouraged the empowerment of Indigenous women during her time. The undeniable truth is that black women have played a pivotal role in the fight for equal rights and justice, particularly in the United States. While the social struggles of American black female revolutionaries such as Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Dorothy Height, Ella Baker, and Dorothy Cotton are documented and celebrated, little or nothing is known about their African counterparts. In Breathing Hard in Beautiful Places, Lars Chinburg explores his connections to the people and places that have made him who he is in a collection of personal essays. The collection is inspired by the talents of many writers–Bill Bryson’s wry travel observations, Norman Maclean’s lyricism on the interplay of nature and family, Sigurd Olson’s gorgeous descriptions of place, and David Sedaris’ knack for drawing hilarity out of the prosaic, among many others.
Many of the essays touch on the power of play as a force for good and …
