The Security Dilemma And Conflict In Space: Impossible Or Inevitable?, Mackenzie Enholm Jan 2024

The Security Dilemma And Conflict In Space: Impossible Or Inevitable?, Mackenzie Enholm

Journal of Strategic Security

Space has been identified as the next warfighting domain. With tensions simmering between the great spacefaring nations amid a space arms race, or at the very least a race for superior space technology, this article will examine such tensions through the lens of the security dilemma. Do the technology escalations between the great space powers and dual-use space technologies make space conflict inevitable? The United States, China, and Russia continue to develop advanced counterspace capabilities with the ability to target other space systems and satellites. Given the nature of states to maximize their own security amid uncertainty in space, physical …

Asymmetry In The Digital Age: Cyber Deterrence Strategies For Small States, Tony Yuan Li Jan 2024

Asymmetry In The Digital Age: Cyber Deterrence Strategies For Small States, Tony Yuan Li

Journal of Strategic Security

In an era where cyberwarfare poses an invisible but potent threat to national security, traditional deterrence theories fall short in providing nations with a viable strategy to defend themselves. This is especially the case for small states, where limited national resources and cyber capabilities prevent them from effectively deterring larger powers. This paper investigates whether small states can achieve cyber deterrence, and the means to do so. This research challenges the preconception that small states are at a disadvantage in cyber contestation, and instead proposes that their small size offers unique defensive benefits. A smaller attack surface, faster incident response …

In A Hell Of Our Own Creation: Spatial Context And The Wehrmacht’S Genocidal War In Eastern Europe, 1941–1943, Charles Joseph Calcaterra Jan 2024

In A Hell Of Our Own Creation: Spatial Context And The Wehrmacht’S Genocidal War In Eastern Europe, 1941–1943, Charles Joseph Calcaterra

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A multitude of social, ideological, psychological, and environmental factors encouraged German servicemen to willingly commit atrocities in Eastern Europe during the Second World War. How should historians contextualize which factors held greater influence over servicemen deployed to different sectors of the vast Eastern Front? Charles Calcaterra highlights soldiers’ responses to their surrounding environments—the landscape of Eastern Europe—to explain why frontline divisions killed and destroyed indiscriminately in accessory to the Holocaust while rearguard personnel socially justified roundups, executions, and the horrid maltreatment of Red Army prisoners of war. Through the lens of military geography, the spatial contexts that fostered frontline units’ …

An Archaeological Investigation Of Communities Of Practice Among Coastal Georgia Potters, Elizabeth Straub Jan 2024

An Archaeological Investigation Of Communities Of Practice Among Coastal Georgia Potters, Elizabeth Straub

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

The Mission period in the southeastern United States (beginning around 1565 AD) was characterized by dramatic social and demographic change. Coastal tribes, which include the Guale, Mocama, Orista, and Yamasee, among others, were simultaneously faced with the challenge of negotiating new relationships with Europeans and the global economy, the spread of new diseases, an influx of refugees displaced by violence, and the threat of increasingly prevalent slave raiding. Since most historical documents about this region were written by Spanish men, the experience of Native American women has been neglected. This project addresses this disparity by focusing specifically on one of …

The Crime Of Aggression: Its Nature, The Leadership Clause, And The Paradox Of Immunity, David Luban Jan 2024

The Crime Of Aggression: Its Nature, The Leadership Clause, And The Paradox Of Immunity, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The paper, written for a research handbook, critically surveys some fundamental philosophical, historical, and doctrinal issues in the crime of aggression. The two introductory sections set the theoretical issues in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and explain the origins of criminalizing aggression under the heading of “crimes against peace.” Section 3 explores an ambiguity between aggression as first use of force and aggression as unprovoked use of force, while section 4 discusses the doctrinal distinction between acts of aggression and wars of aggression.

Sections 5 and 6 turn to the theory of aggression. Section 5 examines modern versus …

All ETDs from UAB

CULTURAL CONNECTEDNESS AND NATIVE AMERICAN MENTAL HEALTH SHARYN W. HILLIN EDUCATIONAL STUDIES IN DIVERSE POPULATIONS ABSTRACT Recent research has indicated a possible connection between the destruction of Native American culture and communities and mental health disparities among Native Americans in the United States. While numerous studies have been conducted among Native Americans in western regions of the United States that establish a relationship between cultural connectedness and mental health resiliency, no such relationship has been investigated in the southeastern region of the United States, particularly within the state of Alabama. Using a blended ethnographic phenomenological methodology, ten Poarch-Creek Indians in …

This paper investigates and implements a miniaturized microwave system for microstrip linear array antenna that operates in X-band (10.1 GHz), S-band (3.4 GHz) and C-band (5.6 GHz). The microwave system consists of three parts: a power divider, a directional coupler, and a matching network stub. These systems feed a linear array (16 elements) of patch antennas loaded with resonance planar omega structures array (160 elements) distributed in both patch (64 elements) and ground (96 elements) as the metamaterial structures for miniaturization purpose. The 1-to-2 divider feeds two directional couplers that act as phase shifters. The couplers fed a set of …

Prohibition In Sanford: Local Lives Questioning A National Narrative Presented Through Data, Discourse Analysis And Digital Mapping, Lindsey K. Yeazell Jan 2024

Prohibition In Sanford: Local Lives Questioning A National Narrative Presented Through Data, Discourse Analysis And Digital Mapping, Lindsey K. Yeazell

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

This thesis uses a microhistorical methodology to examine the social impact and lived experience of Prohibition in Sanford, Florida, and the surrounding area – an historically "dry" community. Historiographical claims from state, regional, and national studies are tested through data sampling of Sanford Municipal Court Records; close readings of more than 200 Sanford Herald articles; and an oral history with a local museum curator based on family tradition.

This is an evidence-driven thesis. A thirty-percent sampling of 23,000 Sanford Municipal Court Records covering the Prohibition era (1920-1933) enables detailed analysis of alcohol-related arrest and enforcement patterns based on race, gender, …

Enhancing Cyber Resilience Through Traffic Generation Patterns In Complex Networks: A Study On Cascading Failures, Aymar Le Père Tchimwa Bouom, Jean-Pierre Lienou, Wilson Ejuh Geh, Frederica Nelson, Sachin Shetty, Charles Kamhoua

VMASC Publications

Network resilience is the capacity of a network to maintain and restore its fundamental operations during or after a failure. This paper investigates the resilience of communication networks with heterogeneous nodes, with host nodes that generate and receive packets and routers that only forward packets. We focus on how traffic generation patterns, defined as the distribution of data packet creation across hosts, affect network resilience. While previous studies identified optimal host placements that balance traffic loads and enhance network performance, this research explores how traffic generation patterns influence network resilience, particularly during cascading failures, where the failure of one node …

Counterterrorism Uses Of Force: The Laws Of War And Jus Ad Vim, Salomon, Paolo Jan 2024

Counterterrorism Uses Of Force: The Laws Of War And Jus Ad Vim, Salomon, Paolo

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Al Qaeda’s terror attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, introduced heretofore unseen issues under International Humanitarian Law. After Al-Qaeda’s attacks, the Bush administration began its Global War on Terror by invading Afghanistan in order to find those responsible for the attacks on September 11, 20001. This invasion caused Al-Qaeda to flee into Pakistan’s Tribal Areas in order to evade American forces. The Bush administration began employing drone strikes in Pakistan’s Tribal Areas to degrade Al-Qaeda’s ability to conduct operations against the United States. The Obama administration continued and expanded the use of drone strikes. Amid the use …

City Beautification And Homelessness: Differing Priorities Of Cities Considered Beautiful And Ugly, Katia Davis Jan 2024

City Beautification And Homelessness: Differing Priorities Of Cities Considered Beautiful And Ugly, Katia Davis

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The downtown area of a city is often considered the economic hub where people come together as a society to engage in consumerism, recreation, and build relationships. Cities use the downtown area to showcase the beauty and appeal of the area to attract new residents or retain current residents. One thing that affects many downtown areas is the presence of visible homelessness. Homelessness is often seen as an unsightly issue that affects local businesses, residents, and tourism. Local governments can choose to push the homeless presence out of downtown or create an environment that helps those in need. This paper …

Abortion Pills: Us History And Politics, Carrie N. Baker Jan 2024

Abortion Pills: Us History And Politics, Carrie N. Baker

Open Educational Resources: Textbooks

This is the first book to offer a comprehensive history of abortion pills in the United States. Public intellectual and lawyer Carrie N. Baker shows how courageous activists waged a decades-long campaign to establish, expand, and maintain access to abortion pills. Weaving their voices throughout her book, Baker recounts both dramatic and everyday acts of their resistance. These activists battled anti-abortion forces, overly cautious policymakers, medical gatekeepers, and fearful allies in their four-decade-long fight to free abortion pills. In post-Roe America, abortion pills are currently playing a critically important role in providing safe abortion access to tens of thousands of …

A Post-Colonial Criticism Of Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, Kaitlyn R. O'Dell Jan 2024

A Post-Colonial Criticism Of Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, Kaitlyn R. O'Dell

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The representation of Indigenous land-based cosmologies within Ernest Callenbach’s Ecotopia communicates a real perception of our world through the constructed imaginative society within this speculative fiction novel. Ecotopia is an alternative Pacific West Coast society that counters the dominant United States model in its holistic and green approach. This green society relies heavily on Indigenous ideology but lacks actual Indigenous voices or communities within this white idealized society. This research provides an example of the deconstruction of this popular novel to its main problematic components, establishing why the use of Indigenous beliefs and values can cause negative implications to the …

Louise De Marillac: Ingenuity, Mission, And Mystique, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Jan 2024

Louise De Marillac: Ingenuity, Mission, And Mystique, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil profiles Louise de Marillac as “a prototype social worker whose social service interventions highlight how twenty-first-century social issues echo those of the seventeenth century.” In response to the political, religious, and social upheaval in seventeenth-century France, she and Vincent de Paul founded the Confraternities of Charity and the Daughters of Charity. These groups made innovative use of women’s leadership and organizational skills to provide the poor with quality care. McNeil explains how Louise’s “approach to serving people in need remains relevant for social work practitioners today.”

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article provides a theoretical overview of the Ukrainian legislative framework addressing the issue of judicial protection of personal non-property rights of military chaplains. Additionally, it justifies the necessity of restoring the institution of military courts for a more effective protection of the personal non-property rights of military chaplains in Ukraine. The theoretical analysis method is employed through its theoretical-multiple variety under implementation approaches. It has been established that the specific nature of military service involves risks to the life and health of military chaplains, as there are various factors that can lead to injuries, concussions, other health impairments, capture, …

Imperial Adolescence In Kenzaburō Ōe's "Prize Stock", D'Yanna Coffey

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The study of adolescents in Postcolonial Studies is a growing area of research. This thesis defines Imperial Adolescence, a critical framework that be used to examine the development of adolescents in imperial settings, applies it to Kenzaburō Ōe’s “Prize Stock,” and encourages postcolonial scholars to add to a steadily discourse. “Prize Stock” tells the story of a black American airman captive in a rural Japanese village, and Imperial Adolescence is applied to the novella’s adolescent narrator. The four stages of Imperial Adolescence (Childhood, Early Adolescence, Puberty, and Middle Adolescence) are used to trace the impact of Postcolonial elements (such as …

Using State And Local Governments’ Purchasing Power To Combat Wage Theft, Courtlyn G. Roser-Jones Jan 2024

Using State And Local Governments’ Purchasing Power To Combat Wage Theft, Courtlyn G. Roser-Jones

Washington and Lee Law Review

Regulatory efforts to curb wage theft are failing. And for good reason: these laws generally empower individual workers to pursue their rights when employers neglect to pay them what they are owed and deter employers with substantial penalties. But the vast majority of workers do not take formal action against their employers. So, when the penalties for committing wage theft are almost entirely triggered by claims workers do not bring, they do not deter employer behavior. Instead, because the likelihood of being penalized at all is so low, some employers make profit-maximizing decisions to commit wage theft on a large …

Ship Shaping: How Congress And Industry Influenced U.S. Naval Acquisitions From 1933-1938, Henry H. Carroll

Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award

Studying shipbuilding politics across time can yield key insights into present-day shipbuilding acquisition reform issues, such as the effects of naval industry consolidation and potential “ally-shoring” of warship production on domestic political support for future naval funding. Past studies of naval acquisitions during the late interwar period often focus on how President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Navy Department prepared the nation for the beginning of World War II. However, Congress and the shipbuilding industry played an often-overlooked role in creating the political support needed to expand the Navy during the tumultuous late interwar period. Self-interested domestic interest groups were …
