Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie Apr 2024

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project uses an historical archaeological approach to analyze the processes of cultural negotiation between disparate social groups living in a remote borderland in the early to mid-nineteenth centuries. Florida, first colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s was passed to the United States in 1821 as part of the young nation’s nascent Manifest Destiny. The Seminoles experienced multiple colonial conflicts, dealt with new diseases, and selected aspects of European culture to incorporate into their daily practices of lifeways.

Archaeological studies of culture change tend to focus on the product of colonial interactions rather than the processes of change that …

Chemtrails: Deadly Skies Or Dangerous Misinformation?, Abigail Foust Apr 2024

Chemtrails: Deadly Skies Or Dangerous Misinformation?, Abigail Foust

Undergraduate Research Symposium

A common sight on a clear day is a thin strip of white across the otherwise blue sky: A contrail. Most people do not think anything of these contrails, and assume they have little to no impact on the world at large. Suppose for a moment, however, that they are not as harmless as some believe. Suppose these cloud trails are actually composed of dangerous chemicals, and are being used by sinister forces in a conspiracy to kill off the weak, mind-control the population, or simply dull our minds in preparation for a government takeover. As far-fetched as this may …

Hogan's Heroes: Fact Or Fiction?, Mark Granicke Apr 2024

Hogan's Heroes: Fact Or Fiction?, Mark Granicke

Undergraduate Research Symposium

When it first debuted in 1965, Hogan’s Heroes was not met with the fondness it later garnered. Set in Stalag 13, a fictional German Luftwaffe (Air Force) prisoner of war (POW) camp during World War II (WWII), the show follows the American POW Colonel Robert E. Hogan and his band of compatriots as they run a secret sabotage operation within the camp under the nose of the inept camp commandant Colonel Wilhelm Klink. Hilarity ensues as Hogan and crew outwit the Germans, portrayed as bumbling idiots, in all sorts of missions, from smuggling prisoners, stealing plans, blowing up trains, and …

Island-Hopping With Chinese Characteristics—What The Prc Is Doing In The Pacific Islands, Why It Matters, And Why The Time Has Come To “Block And Build”, Cleo Paskal

Naval War College Review

China’s engagement with western Pacific island nations and its pursuit of influence over their affairs are driven by its conception of comprehensive national power and a need for reliable access from which it might challenge the U.S. military and eventually displace it from the region.

Reluctant Retrenchment—America’S Response To The Rise Of China, Robert S. Ross

Naval War College Review

China’s rise augurs a power transition that challenges the preeminent security position of the United States in East Asia and has led to an incoherent retrenchment that both undermines that position and complicates efforts to recapitalize the Navy to face that challenge effectively.

Oplan 1003v—Operation Iraqi Freedom From A Planner’S Perspective, Don Thieme

Naval War College Review

Unlike the political decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and the violent insurgency that followed, the operational planning that went into the invasion has not been studied granularly. This history of that planning effort offers rich insight both for historians and for planners who may be called on to plan another major conventional combined-arms operation in the future.

Meso-Scale Seabed Quantification With Geoacoustic Inversion, Tim Sonnemann, Jan Dettmer, Charles W. Holland, Stan E. Dosso Apr 2024

Meso-Scale Seabed Quantification With Geoacoustic Inversion, Tim Sonnemann, Jan Dettmer, Charles W. Holland, Stan E. Dosso

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Abstract Knowledge of sub-seabed geoacoustic properties, for example depth dependent sound speed and porosity, is of importance for a variety of applications. Here, we present a semi-automated geoacoustic inversion method for autonomous underwater vehicle data that objectively adapts model inference to seabed structure. Through parallelized trans-dimensional Bayesian inference, we infer seabed properties along a 12 km survey track on the scale of about 10 cm and 50 m in the vertical and horizontal, respectively. The inferred seabed properties include sound speed, attenuation, density, and porosity as a function of depth from acoustic reflection coefficient data. Parameter uncertainties are quantified, and …

Interview No. 1792, Osvaldo Velez

Combined Interviews

Mr Velez grew up in Segundo Barrio during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. He associates those times with gang warfare because of the introduction of guns. He also remembers that in Segundo Barrio, many families lived in tenements. With the number of people living in the tenements, there were a lot of activities in the community, including social gatherings, parties, and family parties. In the absence of technology, most time was spent outside, whether it was hearing local gossip, visiting family and friends, or socializing; that was life in a small community. He lived in a tenement on the corner …

Horizontal Federalism & The Big State "Problem", Elizabeth Beske

California regulates pork; does it offend the Constitution that pork producers in other states must comply with its regulations if they want to sell Californians pork? In National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, the Supreme Court emerged sharply divided in its approach to the practical extraterritorial spillover effect of the in-state regulations of a tantalizing market. Although a fractured majority of the Court upheld California’s Proposition 12 against a dormant Commerce Clause challenge, at least five Justices registered profound discomfort, with one dissenter expressly inviting consideration of the problem through the lens of other clauses. This Article analyzes “the …

Combating Terrorism To Promote National Security In Nigeria: Libraries And Information Centres To The Rescue, Udemezue Joseph Ogugua, Jovita Amarachi Ikeagwuani Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Terrorism is a hydra-headed monster and should be stamped out for the benefit of humanity. Fighting terrorism to enthrone national security should be at the front burner of government stakeholders especially this time that non-state actors operate with impunity. The paper discusses the role of libraries and information centres in combating terrorism and promoting national security in Nigeria. Specifically, the paper examines terrorism and national security, terrorism in Nigeria, the role of libraries and information centres in the fight against terrorism to promote national security. It also looks at the challenges encountered by libraries and information centres in the fight …

Thermal Frontal Polymerization – Applications In Coatings And Composites, Maria Martinez Apr 2024

Thermal Frontal Polymerization – Applications In Coatings And Composites, Maria Martinez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal frontal polymerization has long been used as a method to cure composites and coatings. However, this is the first time these applications have been used without the use of a catalyst, for the case of composites and coatings.

Chapter 2 discusses how to optimize cure-on-demand, thin layer coatings, using frontal polymerization. Previously, for the use of curing thin layer coating using thermal FP, it was known to just make the formulation viscous enough, as this would prevent premature quenching caused by heat loss. It was discovered that for a given layer thickness, a minimum viscosity and initiator concentration were …

Gnsi Decision Brief: A Covert Competition And A Competition Over Covert Action, Jeff Rogg Apr 2024

Gnsi Decision Brief: A Covert Competition And A Competition Over Covert Action, Jeff Rogg

GNSI Decision Briefs

The U.S. is entering an era of global competition that is drawing comparisons to the Cold War. Similarly, the U.S. is again facing key problems in one of the most secret and sensitive areas of national security: covert action. This decision brief will scrutinize the shortcomings in the existing architecture for covert action and identify questions facing policymakers who would use this crucial, yet controversial, instrument of statecraft to provide an advantage in strategic competition.
