Mythprint is the monthly bulletin of the Mythopoeic Society, a nonprofit educational organization devoted to the study, discussion, and enjoyment of myth and fantasy literature, especially the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams. To promote these interests, the Society publishes three magazines, maintains a World Wide Web site, and sponsors the annual Mythopoeic Conference and awards for fiction and scholarship, as well as local and written discussion groups.

Among the manuscripts left by Earl C. Davis were a large collection concerning various aspects of the history of the Bible, which are collected here. Lecture XV is a Bibliography covering the collection of lectures.

Davis left a single sheet with seven books under the title, “A Few Books Worth Reading.” This is included here along with a compiled list of references used in the earlier lectures, nearly 60 of them. This latter list has been created by Earl's grandson Davis Baird.

John Stevens is a retired PM/WRA Program Manager with extensive experience running multi-million-dollar conventional weapons destruction (CWD) programs in Vietnam, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Balkans, and Ukraine. Since December 2014, Stevens has been re-employed as a Senior CWD Advisor with PM/WRA. In this capacity, he conducted fresh CWD assessments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Guinea-Bissau, Lao PDR, Senegal, Serbia, and South Korea.

However, that premise is no longer guaranteed as unmanned systems and vessels begin to embark on the waters. As the international community and U.S. legislators grapple with whether the law of the sea and domestic maritime law must adapt to accommodate the newest seafarers, it becomes evident that they need to be fully prepared to answer questions of liability and responsibility regarding unmanned vessels. A 2024 book titled “How Sanctions Work, Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare” by Narges Bajoghli, Vali Nasr, Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, and Ali Vaez argues that sanctions have had no impact on the behavior of the Islamic Republic in Iran (IR hereafter) and have instead inflicted pain on the ordinary Iranians. While the book does offer a useful description of the evolution of the sanctions against the IR, it fails in its analysis and conclusions.

Nevertheless, an increasing number of armed conflicts are currently being fought in dense urban environments. As a result, the risk of collateral damage and harm to civilians has drastically increased, making it significantly more difficult to adhere to international humanitarian law (“IHL”) and the rules of war.

This essay takes its inspiration from a series of addresses given by the former slave and radical abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Douglass hailed the promise of photography to bring forth democratic modes of representation. He saw in photography the power to bring distances up close and level social hierarchies by revealing the common humanity of those below with those above. Douglass, however, hedged his optimistic view. He saw that the “vast power” of photography also came with great danger. It can reveal truth but it can also foster error depending on “the master we obey.” It is this double-edged power of …

This paper examines the effectiveness of United States Army Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFABs) in training and advising partner militaries while preserving conventional force readiness. A shortage of volunteers, the manpower demands of embedded security, and lack of a Congressional funding authority have made SFABs and the conventional force less ready for operations. These challenges will be analyzed through the lens of institutional theory to identify systemic threats to the viability of SFABs. Why do ongoing genocides persist despite global condemnation? This paper examines the challenge of ending ongoing genocides and argues that the persistence of genocides can be largely attributed to the interaction of structural factors and triggers with inadequate responses at the national, regional, and international levels. The analysis focuses on the genocidal experiences of the Yezidi and Rohingya communities, which were triggered by the 2014 attacks in Sinjar, Iraq, and the 2017 actions in Rakhine State, Myanmar. This paper explores meso-level approaches to atrocity prevention that incorporate a wider array of local expertise at all stages, from early warning to transitional justice. Specifically, we treat meso-level approaches as encompassing local leadership and advocacy across bottom-up processes, grassroots efforts, victim-led activism, and civil society mobilization. We draw from two contemporary cases of mass atrocities, Ukraine and Syria, which exemplify such efforts, using primary interview data with meso-level actors. First, we examine atrocity risk early warning in Ukraine, where prescient local expertise at the meso-level failed to influence international responses, asking what went wrong and what more could be …

Modern jurisprudence consistently treats the U.S. military as legally distinct, imposing different standards for service members’ constitutional rights, Federal Tort Claims Act lawsuits, and Title VII protections than it does for their civilian counterparts. The legal foundation for this treatment relies in large part on the constitutional military structure, which empowers Congress to prescribe rules and regulations for the “land and naval Forces” and exercise extensive power over “armies.” Usually, both entities—armies and the larger “land and naval Forces”—are considered synonymous with the modern-day all-volunteer force (“AVF”). Forecasting mass atrocities is a central concern for academics, policymakers, and practitioners, but determining where and when mass atrocities will occur is far from straightforward. Over the last few decades, researchers around the world have developed several forecasting models. Some of these models—like the Political Instability Task Force model or the Australia Forecasting Project model—have emphasized quantitative assessments of the risk of mass atrocity. Others—like the UN Framework of Analysis for Atrocity Crimes—have focused on how case-specific factors coalesce to impact the onset of mass atrocity. Lecture III, "The Origin of the Books of the Old Testament, Part 1," discusses the scholarly efforts, known in 1916 as "higher criticism," that bring careful historical and linguistic analysis to the study of biblical texts. Davis illustrates that text clearly shows that the Old Testament cannot be simply the received word of God because of various problems, including the idea that Moses could describe his own death, double accounts of creation and of the flood.
