Ai Enabled Autonomic, Safe, And Interactive Intrusion Response System, Damodar Panigrahi
Ai Enabled Autonomic, Safe, And Interactive Intrusion Response System, Damodar Panigrahi
Theses and Dissertations
The exponential rise in internet usage has precipitated a corresponding surge in cyber threats, underscoring the urgent need for advanced cybersecurity solutions. While traditional intrusion detection systems (IDS) can identify these threats, their inability to self-recover leaves systems vulnerable. Intrusion response systems (IRS) have been developed to address this, aiming to auto- matically restore systems to their desired state post-security breach. However, current IRSs often necessitate manual intervention and may not be su!ciently robust against sophisticated threats. To overcome these limitations, we propose an AI-powered Autonomic, Safe, and Interactive Intrusion Response System called ‘Intrusion Response System Digital Assistant (IRSDA)’. IRSDA …
A Graduate Recital In Voice, Matthew C. Stephens
A Graduate Recital In Voice, Matthew C. Stephens
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The thesis will consist of program notes for my graduate vocal performance recital. The recital included a variety of music from the composers Stanislaw Moniuszko, Wolfgang Mozart, Carl Loewe, Michael Costa, and John Philip Sousa. Each piece was accompanied by program notes that included a brief biography of the composer, information about the piece, text and translation, and a performance reflection. In this recital, I wanted to have a program of pieces that were rarely, if ever, performed. I’m personally part Polish from my moms’ side, which sparked a desire to include something in Polish. The Mozart aria was one …
A Cloud Of Witnesses: Captivity Among The Society People Of Colonial Pennsylvania, Jenifer L. Ishee
A Cloud Of Witnesses: Captivity Among The Society People Of Colonial Pennsylvania, Jenifer L. Ishee
Theses and Dissertations
In 1760, Jean McCord Lowry published a journal detailing her three years of captivity among the Delawares of Pennsylvania and the French Catholic authorities in New France during the Seven Years’ War. Lowry was a member of a religious community known as the Society People that strictly adhered to the codes, rules, and ordinances of the Scottish National Covenant of 1638 and the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643. This sect emerged from a series of European imperial conflicts that led to internal divisions within the Covenanter community. The Society People in Scotland, Ireland, and colonial America believed themselves the …
Just Do Something: Framing A Movement To Fight Fascism, Heather-Ann Layth
Just Do Something: Framing A Movement To Fight Fascism, Heather-Ann Layth
Theses and Dissertations
This study seeks to better understand antifascist activism, in part to add sociological perspectives to the antifascist movement and better understand a group publicly maligned by negative portrayals by politicians and the media. This study is important because fascism is already doing real damage to marginalized Americans and represents a real threat of further identitarian and authoritarian oppression. Yet, the movement against growing fascism has been painted as a boogeyman in the public eye. Efforts to stop neo-Nazis and white supremacists from gathering are not discussed in terms of fighting fascism but rather in terms which criminalize and demonize antifascists. …
Machine Learning Classification Of Drones, Birds, And Bird-Like Drones Using Radar Micro-Doppler, Camera Imagery, And Radar-Camera Fusion, Kester Magalong Nucum
Machine Learning Classification Of Drones, Birds, And Bird-Like Drones Using Radar Micro-Doppler, Camera Imagery, And Radar-Camera Fusion, Kester Magalong Nucum
Theses and Dissertations
Counter-drone systems employ sensors such as radars and cameras to detect, track, and identify drones. These systems can confuse birds with drones, and the advent of bird-like drones exacerbates this problem. This thesis explores radar micro-Doppler, camera imagery, and their fusion for drone and bird classification. First, micro-Doppler models of quadcopters, birds, and bird-like drones were developed to generate a dataset of synthetic spectrograms for training support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, Naïve Bayes, and convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers. Second, transfer learning was applied on YOLOv10, a recently developed You Only Look Once object detector model, to detect and classify …

Long Live The Cruel King Of England: A Character Analysis Of Shakespeare’S “Henry V”, Georgia L. Coomer
Long Live The Cruel King Of England: A Character Analysis Of Shakespeare’S “Henry V”, Georgia L. Coomer
The Confluence
This essay revisits Shakespeare's "Henry V," questioning the common belief that the character embodies the ideal Christian king and heroic military leader. Through careful textual analysis and references to existing literary scholarship, it argues that beneath Henry's esteemed image lies a ruler driven by political strategy, moral ambiguity, and a willingness to act ruthlessly. The analysis highlights three key aspects of Henry’s character: first, his tendency to shift moral responsibility onto others, especially in his discussions with Canterbury about the war with France; second, his capacity for imaginative cruelty, as seen in his threatening speech at Harfleur; and third, his …
Cybersecurity And Global Threats: A Comparative Analysis Of Estonia And Russia’S Policies, María Paula Morales Palacios
Cybersecurity And Global Threats: A Comparative Analysis Of Estonia And Russia’S Policies, María Paula Morales Palacios
The Confluence
As digital technology continues to reshape the foundations of modern life, the question of how states respond to cyber threats has become increasingly urgent. This paper examines how political systems shape national cybersecurity policies by comparing Estonia and Russia, two countries facing similar external threats but governed by vastly different structures. Estonia’s democratic framework emphasizes transparency, citizen participation, and international cooperation, while Russia’s semi-authoritarian model centers on state sovereignty, centralized control, and strategic offensive capabilities. Drawing on key historical events, including the 2007 cyberattacks on Estonia and the 2016 attacks on Russian banks, the paper explores how each state’s political …
The Endurance Of West African Textiles Through The Ages, Sarah Isak-Goode
The Endurance Of West African Textiles Through The Ages, Sarah Isak-Goode
The Confluence
West Africans have a long history of creating distinctive textiles. Yet, they are frequently misunderstood. Though often bold, the patterns and colors used in textiles have a subtle meaning. Separately and together, many of these patterns and symbols represent an unspoken language among natives. Research from the pre-colonial era to the contemporary era has shown that these textiles have persisted because of the reverence West Africans hold for both their heritage and personal expression. Further research is recommended to gain understanding of these textiles, from both the past and the present, as well as the West Africans who have intently …

Frontlines Of Influence: State Vs. Nonstate Disinformation Campaigns, Lily Wershbale
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
This paper examines the evolution of disinformation campaigns conducted by state and nonstate actors, focusing specifically on Russia and the Islamic State as representative case studies. Through historical examples and qualitative comparative analysis, this research identifies the similarities and differences in disinformation’s role in actors’ core missions, resource allocation, and targeting decisions. This paper further explores the implications of artificial intelligence on disinformation campaigns, investigating how emerging technology will impact the influence operations of state governments and nonstate organizations alike. The findings reveal that while the ultimate intent of both state and non-state actors is to destabilize societies, their approaches …
Shifting Us Strategies: Preventing China’S Continued Military Aggression Through Unrestricted Warfare Tactics Targeting Supply Chains, Andrew P. Downs
Shifting Us Strategies: Preventing China’S Continued Military Aggression Through Unrestricted Warfare Tactics Targeting Supply Chains, Andrew P. Downs
Master's Projects and Capstones
Strategic competition between the United States and the People's Republic of China (PRC) has developed into a complex multi-domain struggle encompassing military, economic, and trade aspects. This research demonstrated that the current U.S. deterrence strategy is mismatched in its ability to engage with the PRC and its use of asymmetric tactics. While the US continually depends on technological advantage through expensive platforms, the PRC is developing more subtle ways in which to subvert the US' ability to respond to an expanding China. While the US response has focused on conventional means, the PRC has adopted Unrestricted Warfare as a counter …

From Essential To Expendable – Montagnards, Kurds, And U.S. Army Special Forces In Vietnam And Northern Iraq, Jake Brooks
Masters Theses, 2020-current
In the Vietnam and Iraqi conflicts, the U.S. Army Special Forces teamed up with indigenous ethnic monitories to bring the fight to all corners of the battle space, and to take advantage of their immense local knowledge and strategic locations. The Montagnards of Central Indochina and the Kurds in Northern Iraq allied with the Special Forces for a number of reasons: protection from their ruling governments, recognition for their movements for autonomy, increased access to better medicine and equipment, and the opportunity to strike back at their historical enemies. The Montagnards and Kurds taught the Green Berets how to better …
An Equitable High: Indigenous People Must Have A Seat At The Table For The Future Business Of Psychedelics, How Affirmative Patent Rights Can Ensure Indigenous Inclusion, Meghan Ricci
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
Political turmoil led to the halt of medical research into hallucinogens, yet efforts are now underway to begin exploring their therapeutic properties following a pathway created by cannabis. However, as hallucinogens are gaining traction as potentially untapped therapeutic avenues for illnesses like anxiety, addiction, and PTSD, comes the risk of endangering or altering centuries-long indigenous use. An Equitable High seeks to examine the history of psychedelic drugs while evaluating avenues to provide equal access and adequate protections for indigenous communities as legalization and monetization efforts surrounding hallucinogens grows.
Routine Activity Theory And The Severity Of Terrorist Act, Yiwei Song
Routine Activity Theory And The Severity Of Terrorist Act, Yiwei Song
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Terrorist incidents have increased dramatically in the past several decades, leading to significant casualties and property damage worldwide. While prior studies grounded in lifestyle exposure theory have explored how victim demographics, lifestyle, and routine activities influence the likelihood of victimization, this study applies Routine Activity Theory to examine whether increased guardianship in the form of target security reduces the severity of terrorist incidents. Using data from 15,138 terrorist incidents in 2015 from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), this study investigates the relationship between offender motives, target security, and the severity of attacks, measured by fatalities, injuries, and property damage. Furthermore, …

The Only Thriller J.R.R. Tolkien (Never) Wrote: Jungian Shapes Of Evil In “The New Shadow”, Martin Hauberg-Lund Laugesen, Bo Kampmann Walther
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien's The New Shadow, a fragment set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, offers a rich but often overlooked exploration of the psychological and cultural implications of peace following the defeat of Sauron. Although Tolkien abandoned the project, dismissing it as a mere “thriller”, the text presents significant insights into the dynamics of generational conflict, the origins of Evil, and the moral challenges of a post-heroic world. This paper examines The New Shadow through a dual lens: first, by contextualizing Tolkien’s depiction of good and evil within Christian ethical frameworks, and second, by applying Carl Gustav Jung’s psychological …

The Design Of Time: Envisioning The Future Through Science Fiction Production Design In The Alien Franchise, Josephine Spanier, Charles Howard
The Design Of Time: Envisioning The Future Through Science Fiction Production Design In The Alien Franchise, Josephine Spanier, Charles Howard
Honors Thesis
In filmmaking, the production designer works closely with the director and cinematographer to ensure cohesion and uniqueness in the film’s visual design. This collaboration often provides the designer with a strong degree of influence on the film’s final look, thus shaping the thematic and visual impact of a film on the audience. In highly stylized and fantastical genres, such as science fiction, production design plays an especially important role in creating worlds that may be entirely different from the one we currently live in, while still reflecting the real-world context in which the film was made. This phenomena can particularly …
Cyberterrorism And International Laws: Need For Cyber Inclusion, Carla A. Lechette-Danberry
Cyberterrorism And International Laws: Need For Cyber Inclusion, Carla A. Lechette-Danberry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cyberterrorists use cyberspace to communicate their threats and conduct their actions to intimidate their political, religious, or ideological control. The literature reviewed on cyberterrorism and international law has been limited and continues to develop as cyberterrorists develop their skills and capabilities to conduct cyberattacks. A gap exists in the literature on how nation-states respond to a cyberattack, cyber warfare, or cyberterrorism under international laws and policies. The problem is that international laws are being outpaced by the development of new technology, which cybercriminals and cyberterrorists can circumvent in order to escape punishment for a cyberattack. The purpose of this basic …

Environmental And Labor Exploitation In Dominican And Haitian Sugar Cane Plantations: A Failure To Achieve Sustainable Development Goals, Norah S. Mosquea
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper explores the dual issues of labor and environmental exploitation in sugar cane plantations in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, focusing on these countries' actions in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Chapter 1 outlines the relevant SDGs, particularly those addressing labor conditions and pollution reduction. It discusses several types of pollution and its impact on laborers and surrounding communities, framing these impacts within the concept of environmental justice. Additionally, it explains how plantation-related pollution degrades all four types of ecosystem services, emphasizing cultural ecosystem services that affect people's overall well-being. Chapter 2 inspects the historical context, …
Unilateralism’S Double-Edged Sword: Understanding The Impact Of The United States’ Unilateral Actions Towards Afghanistan And Iraq, Kayla Amanda Matthews
Unilateralism’S Double-Edged Sword: Understanding The Impact Of The United States’ Unilateral Actions Towards Afghanistan And Iraq, Kayla Amanda Matthews
Master's Theses
This thesis will explore the effects of the United States' unilateral actions throughout the war on terror. Has the United States pursuing unilateral actions in Afghanistan and Iraq equated to an increase in anti-Americanism, leading to increasing terrorist acts that endanger its national security? The answer is yes. Although, from what this research will reveal anti-Americanism begins to be refueled in these countries but not due to any current direct conflict between the above-referenced nation-states and the United States. Previous research reveals that the United States' relationship with unilateralism was not a new phenomenon that arose during the war on …
Hooves, Paws, And Patriarchy: Reimagining A Multispecies Society In Late Chosŏn Korea, Jenny Paszik
Hooves, Paws, And Patriarchy: Reimagining A Multispecies Society In Late Chosŏn Korea, Jenny Paszik
Theses - ALL
In late Chosŏn Korea, domesticated animals were more than passive fixtures of human society and culture, but rather active participants in the negotiation of social power dynamics. This paper proposes a species-inclusive reading of Chosŏn society, focusing on the eighteenth century, to expand our understanding from a patriarchal system to a kyriarchal framework. This thesis examines how horses, dogs, and sacrificial animals were enmeshed in intersecting hierarchies of gender and social class in urban and peripheral spaces. I argue that while interactions and conceptions of animals were shaped by the prevailing Confucian worldview, these relationships also worked reciprocally to reinforce, …
Computational Imaging And The Shifting Ground Of Digital Journalism Ethics, Wasim Ahmad
Computational Imaging And The Shifting Ground Of Digital Journalism Ethics, Wasim Ahmad
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation investigates how United States-based professional photojournalists are using computational imaging technologies in their smartphones from a diffusion of innovations perspective. Computational imaging can be considered “on-the-fly” photo manipulation, performing tasks such as blurring out the background the way a larger Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera can, or simulating lighting that didn’t exist on the scene. As image manipulation was previously viewed as taboo in photojournalism (Reaves, 1992), the increased usage of smartphones with computational imaging embedded in software could have wide-reaching implication for ethics research regarding the industry. In-depth interviews with newspaper and …

This paper aims to analyze the characteristics and narrative structures of female hero characters in Tang Dynasty chuanqi stories, using renowned works from Chinese literature, such as Nie Yinniang, Hongxian, and The Biography of Xie Xiaoe as examples. It also explores the literary development and historical context that contributed to the formation of these figures. Furthermore, this study examines the connections between the female heroes in Tang chuanqi and the contemporary social environment. It investigates how the political landscape and women's status during the Tang Dynasty influenced the actions of these female heroes and how these stories, in turn, reflect …
Breaking The Ice: China And Lawfare In The Arctic, Sophia Toner
Breaking The Ice: China And Lawfare In The Arctic, Sophia Toner
Honors Theses
This thesis examines China's engagement with international legal frameworks in the Arctic through a lawfare lens, using a structured analytical framework to assess whether Chinese activities constitute lawfare. Focusing on two key cases—China's involvement in submarine cable infrastructure and its navigation of the Northern Sea Route—the research applies Andrea Beck's three-part definition of lawfare: "(1) the misuse of the law in order to, (2) achieve a military objective, and (3) undermine the legal framework." The analysis reveals that China's Arctic engagement does not fully constitute lawfare according to this definition. Rather than misusing legal frameworks, China operates within existing structures …

Creative Expression Through Worldbuilding: A Study On The Connections Between Literature And Music Through Analysis Of Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive, Lauralei S. Palmer
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the worldbuilding connections visible throughout fantasy literature and musical works. Though their tools seem different, authors, composers, and performers use equivalent techniques to draw in their audiences and produce an immersive, emotional experience. This research focuses on American author Brandon Sanderson’s highly detailed worldbuilding in his epic fantasy series, The Stormlight Archive. The Stormlight Archive exhibits the three pillars of worldbuilding: completeness, invention, and consistency. This research also examines Franz Liszt’s Les Préludes, a symphonic poem based on Alfonse Lamartine’s poem, Ode. Finally, this thesis culminates in the fusion of literary and musical worldbuilding in description …

Maroon Science: A Counterstory Of Apocalypse, Abolition, And Abandonment, Kenjus Watson
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This Critical Race Counterstory explores "Maroon Science," covert and adaptive knowledge systems rooted in African Sacred Sciences, as a means of navigating the dystopic polycrisis of anti-Blackness, Black youth suicide, and climate destruction. Framed through Apocalyptic Education, the work begins at the end, the inevitable collapse of western schooling and broader state systems it supports, to foreground fugitivity as essential to Black autonomy. The track maps connections between Black Indigeneity, ecological adaptation, and the concealment necessary for maroon communities to evade capture. The layered counterstory portrays Maroon Science as contingencies for African epistemologies of survival, flourishing in ungovernable pockets of …
