Structure-Function Analysis Of The Dopamine Transporter In The Presence Of Synthetic Cathinones And Amphetamines, Shari Melissa Radford
Structure-Function Analysis Of The Dopamine Transporter In The Presence Of Synthetic Cathinones And Amphetamines, Shari Melissa Radford
Open Access Theses
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a monoamine transporter that regulates dopamine (DA) neurotransmission by clearing DA from the synapse. DAT is acted on by a number of psychostimulant drugs, which block reuptake and potentiate DA signaling. Several inhibitors of DAT, both amphetamines and cathinones, also cause reversal of transport. Previous research has shown the importance of a conserved salt bridge in another monoamine transporter, the serotonin transporter, in amphetamine-induced efflux. In our studies here, we engineered a mutant Drosophila melanogaster DAT (dDAT D475N) designed to interrupt this salt bridge and examine the effects on amphetamine- and cathinone-induced efflux in vitro. …
The Application Of Natural Language Processing To Open Source Intelligence For Ontology Development In The Advanced Persistent Threat Domain, Corey T. Holzer
The Application Of Natural Language Processing To Open Source Intelligence For Ontology Development In The Advanced Persistent Threat Domain, Corey T. Holzer
Open Access Dissertations
Over the past decade, the Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) has risen to forefront of cybersecurity threats. APTs are a major contributor to the billions of dollars lost by corporations around the world annually. The threat is significant enough that the Navy Cyber Power 2020 plan identified them as a “must mitigate” threat in order to ensure the security of its warfighting network.
Reports, white papers, and various other open source materials offer a plethora of information to cybersecurity professionals regarding these APT attacks and the organizations behind them but mining and correlating information out of these various sources needs the …
Drone Zoning, Troy A. Rule
Drone Zoning, Troy A. Rule
North Carolina Law Review
The growing popularity of small civilian drones has generated a wide array of complex and unprecedented regulatory challenges. Many of these challenges, such as keeping drones away from manned aircraft, are matters that the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) is clearly authorized and well equipped to address. However, several other drone policy challenges relate solely to drones’ potential to disrupt landowners’ privacy and to otherwise interfere with activities on the ground. The nature and severity of these conflicts often varies greatly depending on a drone’s specific location; drone uses that are welcomed in some city neighborhoods may be prohibitively disruptive in …

Rediscovering The Bible For Involvement And Insights For Spiritual Growth For The Restoration Church Member, John F. Woodward
Rediscovering The Bible For Involvement And Insights For Spiritual Growth For The Restoration Church Member, John F. Woodward
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation proposes that many individuals in the Restoration Church, an early nineteenth-century American church movement founded by Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell that today includes hundreds of Churches of Christ/Christian Churches, are experiencing spiritual malnourishment, while finding in the tradition a lack of resources, rhetoric, or guidance to stem the hunger. Section 1 describes the influence of contextualization, tracing the history of the Restoration Movement back to its early philosophical and social influences that resulted in a rationalist and Biblicist interpretation of the Bible that focused primarily on conversion and church organization, while distracting attention from spirituality and divine …

Maritime Advanced Geospatial Intelligence Craft For Oil Spill Response: Selected Resources And Annotations, C. Reid Nichols, Nikolaos I. Xiros, Jeanne Pavy
Project Documentation
This selection of resources highlights the utility of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) for use in marine spill response. Each entry is followed by a brief summary and evaluation of the source (i.e., the annotation). Most annotations will define the scope of the source, list significant cross references, and identify relevant USV capabilities. There is no attempt to provide actual hypotheses, data, or graphics, especially concerning cited articles published in refereed journals. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Relevance relates to the citation’s presentation of capabilities that …
The 1994 Rwandan Genocide: The Religion/Genocide Nexus, Sexual Violence, And The Future Of Genocide Studies, Kate E. Temoney
The 1994 Rwandan Genocide: The Religion/Genocide Nexus, Sexual Violence, And The Future Of Genocide Studies, Kate E. Temoney
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In recent genocides and other conflicts—for example, the Sudan, Burma, and now Iraq—sexual violence and religion have received increasing but modest systematic treatment in genocide studies. This essay contributes to the nascent scholarship on the religious and sexual dimensions of genocide by providing a model for investigating the intersections among religion, genocide, and sexual violence. I treat the Rwandan genocide as a case study using secondary and primary sources and proffer the reinforcing typologies of “othering,” justification, and authorization as an investigatory tool. I further nuance the influences of religion on forms of sexual violation by arguing that religion indirectly …

The Chief Justice And Statutory Construction: Holding The Government's Feet To The Fire, Pratik A. Shah
Cardozo Law Review
The article examines Chief Justice John Roberts' approach to statutory construction, highlighting his tendency to limit government overreach by narrowly interpreting statutes, particularly in federal criminal law and agency deference cases. His decisions reflect a commitment to curbing prosecutorial and agency discretion, ensuring the government operates within legal boundaries.

Summary Reversals In The Roberts Court, Edward A. Hartnett
Summary Reversals In The Roberts Court, Edward A. Hartnett
Cardozo Law Review
The article examines the use of summary reversals by the Roberts Court, arguing that these decisions—where the Court reverses lower court rulings without full briefing or oral argument—serve important administrative functions and address specific types of errors, despite longstanding criticism. The author identifies patterns in the areas of law and types of errors targeted by these reversals, concluding that the practice persists due to its utility in maintaining judicial hierarchy and efficiency, even as critics question its propriety.
A Theoretical Analysis Of Isis Indoctrination And Recruitment, Trevor Hawkins
A Theoretical Analysis Of Isis Indoctrination And Recruitment, Trevor Hawkins
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper is an attempt to use various theories in the social sciences as a tool to understand the mechanisms employed in ISIS indoctrination and recruitment tactics. There is a discussion of theories that have been developed in the field of influence psychology, rationalizing the context of indoctrination within this area of study. There is a discussion of proposedly relevant materials in philosophy, specifically simulacrum and linguistic deconstruction. These components are extrapolated to interpret a first person account of ISIS indoctrination, the first-ever ISIS recruitment film, and a Radical-Islamist periodical Inspire Magazine. Using a form of propaganda film analysis, and …

The Effects Of Colonization On The Aztecs: Early Colonial Period 1521-1550, Manuel Lechuga
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This study is about the effect of the Colonization on the Aztecs, focusing on the early colonial period, which lasted from 1521 to about 1550. The Spanish sought out to colonization Mexico, which would put the Aztec culture in the rearview. With cultural hegemony, the Spanish had a template on how to conquest and colonize.
Winning At The Graduate Level Of Warfare: Six Core Factors Of A Successful Counterinsurgency Campaign And The Example Of Sierra Leone, John D. Rimann
Winning At The Graduate Level Of Warfare: Six Core Factors Of A Successful Counterinsurgency Campaign And The Example Of Sierra Leone, John D. Rimann
Honors Theses
The most common form of warfare so far in the 21st Century has been insurgencies and counterinsurgencies, types of warfare which are particularly challenging for industrialized Western nations to wage effectively. This paper identifies six factors of primary importance which form the key to a successful counterinsurgency campaign. These factors are legitimacy, clarity, beneficial geopolitical factors, restraint, intellectual understanding, and an enduring commitment. This paper argues that these factors must all be present for a counterinsurgency campaign to succeed, and argues that without these factors being accounted for a counterinsurgency will fail. The British humanitarian intervention in Sierra Leone in …

Can International Criminal Law Deter Rebel Groups? The Case Of Uganda, The Lord's Resistance Army, And The International Criminal Court, Julia Reilly
Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
How does a state’s commitment to international criminal accountability mechanisms affect the tactics of rebel groups fighting against it? I examine the conflict between Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army, spanning four phases from 1996 until 2015, and parse out whether Uganda’s stance on the Rome Statute and the International Criminal Court affected the LRA’s propensity to target civilians. I use descriptive statistics of civilian and military casualties and qualitative case studies, drawing largely on newspaper and NGO reports of events in the conflict. I find that the affect of Uganda’s signaling on justice on the LRA’s civilian targeting is …
Preparation Of Aminoalcohols And Their Application For The Synthesis Of Heterocycles And As Potential Sensors For Nerve Agents, David L. Sellers
Preparation Of Aminoalcohols And Their Application For The Synthesis Of Heterocycles And As Potential Sensors For Nerve Agents, David L. Sellers
Dissertations
Oxazoles and oxazolines are important heterocyclic scaffolds commonly used in pharmaceuticals and optoelectronic materials. Traditionally these heterocyclic compounds are prepared by condensation methodology that suffers from poor reactivity when using electron deficient or sterically crowded reaction partners. Condensation methods also exhibit low tolerance of many functional groups as the reactions typically use strong acids and high temperatures. This dissertation describes an alternate strategy for the formation of these compounds by employing an epoxide opening followed by oxidation to form these heterocyclic compounds.
Epoxide opening reactions with primary aliphatic, allylic, and benzylic amines, aminolysis reactions, often achieve high yields regardless of …

Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt
Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
A latin square of order-n is an n x n array over a set of n symbols such that every symbol appears exactly once in each row and exactly once in each column. Latin squares encode features of algebraic structures. When an algebraic structure passes certain "latin square tests", it is a candidate for use in the construction of cryptographic systems. A transversal of a latin square is a list of n distinct symbols, one from each row and each column. The question regarding the existence of transversals in latin squares that encode the Cayley tables of finite groups …

In precontact Samoa, extended families, āiga, and villages, nu‘u, demonstrated their social and political cohesion in periodic, competitive displays of conspicuous consumption, hospitality, and in warfare. Demonstrations of economic capacity and military superiority increased their sociopolitical capital and established, or maintained, their claims to social and political power. These competitive rituals were central features of precontact social organization: the fa‘asamoa.

Effects Of A Virtual Church On The Perceived Spiritual Well-Being Of The Elderly: A Qualitative Study Of Participants In A Virtual Religious Community, Sonia L. Russell
Education Doctoral
The study purposed to ascertain if the virtual church is a viable alternative to brick and mortar church; and uniquely tailored to virtual teleconference church. It delved into the perceptions of the elder population regarding the phenomenon of virtual church. The study also sought to determine whether there are obstacles in either physical or virtual churches that would impede spiritual growth and can be overcome. Suler’s analysis of virtual church attendee’s experiences guided this qualitative study and theoretical framework. The research was conducted through in-depth, semi-structured interviews consisting of open-ended questions. The questions explored the perceptions of elderly congregants of …

The Coin Conundrum: The Future Of Counterinsurgency And U.S. Land Power, Thomas R. Mockaitis Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Counterinsurgency (COIN) continues to be a controversial subject among military leaders. Critics argue that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made the U.S. military, particularly the Army, "COIN-centric." They maintain that equipping U.S. forces to combat insurgency has eroded their conventional war fighting capabilities. Those committed to preserving and even enhancing COIN capabilities, on the other hand, insist that doing so need not compromise the ability of the military to perform other tasks. They also point out that the likelihood of even a mid-level conventional war remains low while the probability of unconventional engagements is high. This monograph reviews …
