Habitus, The Writings Of Irish Hunger Strikers And Elias's The Loneliness Of The Dying, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan
Articles
»Habitus, die Texte der irischen Hungerstreikenden und Elias', Die Einsamkeit der Sterbenden'«. Elias maintained that over the course of several centuries death has become associated with greater shame and embarrassment feelings due mainly to four interwoven processes. In this paper we consider how these specific processes or 'special conditions' Elias referred to, in conjunction with other processes, shaped the experience of dying and the image of death for twentieth century Irish hunger strikers.
Sotxtstream: Density-Based Self-Organizing Clustering Of Text Streams, Avory C. Bryant, Krzysztof J. Cios
Sotxtstream: Density-Based Self-Organizing Clustering Of Text Streams, Avory C. Bryant, Krzysztof J. Cios
Computer Science Publications
A streaming data clustering algorithm is presented building upon the density-based selforganizing stream clustering algorithm SOSTREAM. Many density-based clustering algorithms are limited by their inability to identify clusters with heterogeneous density. SOSTREAM addresses this limitation through the use of local (nearest neighbor-based) density determinations. Additionally, many stream clustering algorithms use a two-phase clustering approach. In the first phase, a micro-clustering solution is maintained online, while in the second phase, the micro-clustering solution is clustered offline to produce a macro solution. By performing self-organization techniques on micro-clusters in the online phase, SOSTREAM is able to maintain a macro clustering solution in …
Prefaces And Postscripts: Walzer’S Just And Unjust Wars At Age 40, David Luban
Prefaces And Postscripts: Walzer’S Just And Unjust Wars At Age 40, David Luban
Georgetown Law Faculty Lectures and Appearances
This paper was written as a keynote address for a conference on Michael Walzer’s Just and Unjust War on the 40th anniversary of its publication. It discusses the significance of the book, and examines the updating prefaces Walzer wrote to the five editions of the book and his methodological postscript to the fifth edition. The paper contrasts Walzer’s philosophical method with that of analytic just war theory, arguing that Walzer’s use of historical cases and the analytic use of imaginary “toy” cases serve different philosophical ends. Noting that Just and Unjust Wars appeared the same year as the Additional Protocols …
Desperate And Determined Men: West Virginia's Lincoln County Feud, Brandon Ray Kirk
Desperate And Determined Men: West Virginia's Lincoln County Feud, Brandon Ray Kirk
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Lincoln County Feud occurred between 1878 and 1890 in the Harts Creek community of Lincoln and Logan counties, West Virginia. The aim of this thesis is to determine the causes of the feud, explore factors that contributed to its escalation, and identify reasons for its conclusion. The Lincoln County Feud arose out of personal grievances between prominent residents Paris Brumfield and Canaan Adkins, intensified due to the changing socioeconomic nature of the Harts Creek community, transformed into a contest among merchants for economic and political supremacy, and concluded with the elimination or outmigration of anti-Brumfield factions. Late nineteenth century …
Zones Of Entanglement: Nigeria's Real And Imagined Compounds, Joseph Godlewski
Zones Of Entanglement: Nigeria's Real And Imagined Compounds, Joseph Godlewski
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
This article is part of TDSR, Volume XXVII, Number II, 2017
From the article abstract: This article examines the architectural and discursive configurations of traditional walled compounds in Nigeria. It begins by discussing the spatial and social organization of compounds in different regions of the country, focusing on the impermanent structures of the Èfik in and around the southeastern port city of Old Calabar. It then examines archival evidence to highlight the ways that compounds have been rhetorically constructed by European observers and post-independence scholars. It concludes that a more productive reading results from understanding the compound as a zone …

Augustana College: Thriving Through Change, Eric Huizinga
History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
World War II brought about many changes for the United States. Colleges and Universities had to deal with this change just as any other individual or organization did during the war. This paper looks specifically at how the war impacted Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Using the Selective Service and Training Act of 1940, this paper shows the steps taken by Augustana's president, Conrad Bergendoff, to combat the school's declining student population. It emphasizes the school's reliance on its traditional values for spiritual guidance as well as showing the proactive steps taken by Bergendoff and the Augustana community to …

Formulation And Evaluation Of Fast Disintegrating Sublingual Atropine Tablets For The Potential Treatment Of Acute Organophosphates Toxicity, Alhussain Aodah
Formulation And Evaluation Of Fast Disintegrating Sublingual Atropine Tablets For The Potential Treatment Of Acute Organophosphates Toxicity, Alhussain Aodah
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Organophosphates (OP) are chemicals found in certain pesticides and in nerve agents such as sarin. Toxicity with these agents can lead to death. On August 2013, 1,300 civilians were killed using sarin gas in Syria by the Assad regimen. The lack of prepared medical facilities, and the availability of appropriate treatmentsignificantly contributed to the high percent of causality. Further, worldwide pesticides toxicity affects 3 million people annually. Therefore, it is imperative that antidote to treat OP toxicity are readily available in a dosage form that is acceptable cost, effective, and user friendly. Atropine sulfate (AS) is the first-line antidote forOP …
Hopeful Voices: Reflective Perspectives On Ways To Advancing Higher Education Development In Post-Civil War Liberia, Lauren E. Bournique
Hopeful Voices: Reflective Perspectives On Ways To Advancing Higher Education Development In Post-Civil War Liberia, Lauren E. Bournique
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Liberia’s recent civil war that end in 2003 negatively impacted the higher education system of Liberia, which is now in the process of further development. In the summer of 2016, a qualitative phenomenological case study was conducted consisting of eighteen interviews with administration, faculty, and students from four Liberian universities: Liberia International Christian College (LICC) (8), University of Liberia (UL) (7), Stella Maris Polytechnic (1), and Cuttington University (1). Furthermore, a National Commission of Higher Education (NCHE) advisor was interviewed. The hope is for this research into Liberian higher education development following the civil war to inspire Liberians, nongovernmental organizations …
When Personalities Dominate, Stability Fails: Great Britain’S Shifting North American Military Strategy, 1768-1775, Anna Page
Honors Thesis Collection
History may be written by the victors, but war is not a solo act. Yet the narrative surrounding the American Revolutionary War makes it seem as though the other major actor in the conflict, Great Britain, only reacted to the events in the North American colonies and yielded no personal motives to ultimately declare war. Responsibility for deciding to go to war in 1775 is essentially removed from British pre-war political and military leaders. Limited discussion is held about the exogenous factors that would have influenced British decision makers. This thesis, however, seeks to fill that gap. It assesses how …
Moral Psychology And Degenerate Regimes In Plato's Republic, Peiying Zhu
Moral Psychology And Degenerate Regimes In Plato's Republic, Peiying Zhu
Honors Thesis Collection
The degenerate regimes and individuals have been a neglected topic in the literature on Plato’s moral psychology in the Republic. This thesis contributes to the currently limited literature on degradation, and explores the following issues in the interpretation of Plato: the validity of the city-soul analogy across all regimes, including both the just city and the unjust cities, the cause of degradation, and the bad-making feature in the degenerate regimes. In defense of my account of the badness of degradation, I also examine the hydraulic model of desire, and offer an interpretation that resolves an apparent tension between the …

Seize The Window: Targeted Killing’S Uses And Limitations In Counterterrorism Strategy, Jillian Kutner
Honors Thesis Collection
Since the beginning of the War on Terror in 2001, the United States has employed a plethora of methods to destroy terrorist organizations, ranging from conventional war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, to espionage and, more recently, cyber warfare. However, with the advent of drones, the United States has increasingly relied on one particular strategic tool for fighting global terror: targeted killing. Namely the assassination of a leader or key member of a terrorist group to disrupt or destroy the organization. Though the effectiveness of targeting has improved in recent years, strategic options regarding how to capitalize on instances of …

Learning To Learn: Military Learning In Disaster Relief Operations, Caroline Bechtel
Learning To Learn: Military Learning In Disaster Relief Operations, Caroline Bechtel
Honors Thesis Collection
How does the military learn in disaster relief operations? The American military has long played a critical role in international responses to natural disasters. Its forward-deployed resources, manpower, and other unique capabilities make it a critical asset for the larger disaster relief community. While the U.S. military and scholars alike have poured considerable resources into understanding how the military learns in traditional operations, this literature fails to provide a compelling explanation for how and why the military learns in non-combat operations. Interviews with involved officials and primary source evidence of learning suggests that the military is better at learning in …

Abstract
In this thesis, I discuss the necessities that make employees want to work and stay with their current employer. I will discuss and define leadership then discuss flex time and unlimited vacation time as forms of benefits. Under demographics I will discuss education, age, gender, and geography. By discussing business size I will show that some benefits are more feasible for larger companies than smaller businesses. Lastly, I will briefly discuss globalization and its effects on employee retention. Throughout the text, appendixes will be referenced which can be found after my references pages at the end of the thesis.
The Evolution Of Communications In The Military As It Relates To Leadership, Palmer Lipscomb
The Evolution Of Communications In The Military As It Relates To Leadership, Palmer Lipscomb
Integrated Studies
Abstract
The evolution of communications in the military as it relates to leadership will review the different means and methods of communications that have been used throughout U.S military history. This will be accomplished using a chronological format. Starting in the Revolutionary time when horseback riders and written communications were the primary means for commanders to relay orders to subordinates, through the invention of the telegraph, that was one of the most significant communications methods developed during the first one-hundred years of United States history. From the telegraph to wireless technology and finally to present day and the widespread use …
Hyaluronidase: A Potential New Treatment For Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, C. Leblanc, Robert Stern
Hyaluronidase: A Potential New Treatment For Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, C. Leblanc, Robert Stern
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (New York) Publications and Research
Acute respiratory distress syndrome, also known as diffuse alveolar damage, is an acute injury to the lungs. Patients experience severe shortness of breath and require mechanical ventilation. It is not a specific disease, but an acute lung dysfunction associated with a variety of disorders: pneumonia, shock, sepsis, and trauma. A similar lesion occurs in newborn infants, called hyaline disease of the newborn. It occurs in premature babies and has the same pathophysiological mechanism as acute respiratory distress syndrome. Hyaline membranes are a pathologic feature of acute respiratory distress syndrome, consisting of basophilic structures that coat alveolar surfaces. They prevent oxygen …
Effects Of The Kinematic Model On Forward-Model Based Spotlight Sar Ecm, David T. Pyles
Effects Of The Kinematic Model On Forward-Model Based Spotlight Sar Ecm, David T. Pyles
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) provides a high-resolution remote image formation capability for airborne platforms. SAR image formation processes exploit the amplitude, time, and frequency shifts that occur in the transmitted waveform due to electromagnetic propagation and scattering. These shifts are predictable through the SAR forward model which is dependent on the waveform parameters and emitter flight path. The approach to develop an electronic countermeasure (ECM) system that is founded on the SAR forward model implies that the ECM system should alter the radar's waveform in a manner that produces the same amplitude, time, and frequency shifts that a real …
The European Immigration Crisis: An Analysis Of How Terror Attacks Have Affected Immigrant And Refugee Populations In Western Europe, Taylor M. Scimeca
The European Immigration Crisis: An Analysis Of How Terror Attacks Have Affected Immigrant And Refugee Populations In Western Europe, Taylor M. Scimeca
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The 2015 European Immigration Crisis brought an unprecedented number of immigrants to parts of Western Europe as millions of people fled war-torn and politically unstable countries. Similar to the increase in immigrants, Western European countries have also been combatting the rise of terror attacks throughout Europe. The increase in immigration coupled with an increase in terror attacks has caused anti-refugee sentiments among some Europeans and demands for stricter immigration policies. This paper examines how terrorism has impacted refugee and immigrant populations throughout Western Europe with a focus on Germany, France, and Belgium following the 2015 European Immigration Crisis.

Excerpt: "The prophet Micah lived during a time of political turmoil and transition. Sound familiar?
For a large portion of the eighth century BC, the Assyrian Empire conducted a massive military conquest of Israel and Judah. During the time of Micah, Samaria had already fallen, and King Hezekiah was in the midst of fervent preparations of protecting Jerusalem for an inevitable Assyrian invasion. At the time, the Assyrian Empire was the largest empire the world had ever known. They were creators of a formidable army with advanced weaponry and military tactics, including psychological warfare. This military supported the empire's ambitions …
