Synthesis Of Complex/Multifunctional Metal (Hydr)Oxide/Graphite Oxide/Aunps Or Agnps Adsorbents And Analysis Of Their Interactions With Chemical Warfare Agents, Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis Feb 2017

Synthesis Of Complex/Multifunctional Metal (Hydr)Oxide/Graphite Oxide/Aunps Or Agnps Adsorbents And Analysis Of Their Interactions With Chemical Warfare Agents, Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

One of the most widely used chemical warfare agent (CWA) is mustard gas, which is a highly toxic blistering agent. In this study we investigated the interactions of mustard gas surrogates’ vapors on zinc and zirconium hydroxides and their composites with graphite oxide (GO) and/or Au or Ag nanoparticles. Even though a small quantity of reports about the detoxification of CWAs on metal oxides is reported in the literature, almost all of these studies are performed in the liquid phase. Both herein reported Zn(OH)2 and Zr(OH)4 showed a good adsorption performance, with the former being photoactive under visible …

Great Power Politics In The Twenty-First Century: The Ukrainian Example, Oksana Byeha Feb 2017

Great Power Politics In The Twenty-First Century: The Ukrainian Example, Oksana Byeha

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The rebirth of the Cold War threatens a potential nuclear crisis. This thesis draws attention to this danger if the ongoing US - Russian confrontation is ignored. Its main focus however is on the behavior of the Russian Federation: and how its domestic and foreign policies have contributed to this situation. The thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction provides a short history of the Cold War and a brief preface to the first chapter. Chapter I, Russia Versus the United States, focuses on the Western-Russian differences and the policies derived from this. In …

The Challenge Of Protecting Transit And Passenger Rail: Understanding How Security Works Against Terrorism, Brian Michael Jenkins Feb 2017

The Challenge Of Protecting Transit And Passenger Rail: Understanding How Security Works Against Terrorism, Brian Michael Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

Terrorists see transit and passenger rail as an attractive target. Designed for public convenience, trains and stations offer terrorists easy access to crowds of people in confined environments where there are minimal security risks and attacks can cause high casualties. This report examines the unique attributes of the terrorist threat, how security measures against terrorism have evolved over the years, and their overall effectiveness.

Does security work? Empirical evidence is hard to come by. Terrorist incidents are statistically rare and random, making it difficult to discern effects. The fact that terrorists focus most of their attacks on targets with little …

Ekphrasis: A Dutch-American Farmer Looks At Bruegel, Keith Fynaardt

Northwestern Review

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting The Return of the Herd (1565) is the subject of a dramatic poetic treatment and the point of departure for a fictional journey concerning Bruegel’s famous picture “the lost season.” The Ekphrasis is an extended version of a Prologue and Epilogue for an in-progress novel.

Gregory Of Tours, The Eastern Emperor, And Merovingian Gaul, Robert Winn Jan 2017

Gregory Of Tours, The Eastern Emperor, And Merovingian Gaul, Robert Winn

Northwestern Review

Gregory of Tours (538-594) was a historian of his time and place. His primary concerns were shaped by his theological, ecclesiastical, and political commitments: western orthodoxy, the Roman Catholic Church, and Merovingian Gaul. It thus is surprising that in his famous Ten Books of Histories he takes a more than passing interest in the eastern Roman Emperor and empire. This article explores Gregory’s passages on imperial Rome and argues that they were intended to highlight the virtues and vices of particular Merovingian kings in comparison with particular Roman emperors. Also, Gregory meant to subtly point to the dangers of Merovingian …

From The Hammer To The Fist: The Pleasures And Dangers Of March, Progress And Protest In Creating Social Justice From The First Wave To The Present, Colleen J. Denney Jan 2017

From The Hammer To The Fist: The Pleasures And Dangers Of March, Progress And Protest In Creating Social Justice From The First Wave To The Present, Colleen J. Denney

Journal of International Women's Studies

The visual history of the British suffrage campaign for social justice began with elegant, organized pageants of pictorial unity; but the beautiful spectacles were not enough to convince the British government of women’s desire for equality under the law. Militant activists of the Women’s Social and Political Union (hereafter WSPU) eventually employed aggressive tactics, letting go of the restrained politics of respectability. This study examines the link between the visual protests of first-wave activists and those of second- and third-wave advocates, in order to establish a dialogue about the presumed transgressions of women’s bodily presence and feminists’ use of body …

Suicide Terrorism: Motivations Beyond Religion And The Role Of Collectivism, Nasser Momayezi, Michael Lewis Momayezi

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

More than fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks, Americans still lack an understanding of what motivates people to commit an act that causes such horror and devastation. This article attempts to explain suicide bombing by considering some deep underlying cultural dimensions of this act. It focuses on the type of society that supports suicide bombers and the conditions that lead communities to condone such attacks. Social support is one of the strongest constraints on the use of suicide bombing. The article argues that members of a collectivist society are more willing to support extreme measures when they are threatened by …

The Mental Health Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical Review Of Research, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson Jan 2017

The Mental Health Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Critical Review Of Research, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Many scholars assert that Indigenous peoples across the globe suffer a disproportionate burden of mental illness. Research indicates that colonialism and its associated processes are important determinants of Indigenous peoples’ health internationally. In Canada, despite an abundance of health research documenting inequalities in morbidity and mortality rates for Indigenous peoples, relatively little research has focused on mental health. This paper provides a critical scoping review of the literature related to Indigenous mental health in Canada. We searched eleven databases and two Indigenous health-focused journals for research related to mental health, Indigenous peoples, and Canada, for the years 2006–2016. Over two …

Organizing In The Shadows: Limits On Union Organization Of Undocumented Day Laborers, Paige Coomer Jan 2017

Organizing In The Shadows: Limits On Union Organization Of Undocumented Day Laborers, Paige Coomer

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

This Note illustrates how the current US labor scheme acts as an impediment to union organization of undocumented day laborers. While the market for these contingent workers grows, so too does the need for worker protection from abuses. However, unions face legal and structural barriers that prevent them from effectively organizing day laborers. Ultimately, these legal and structural barriers show that the US labor scheme as a whole is incapable of effectively responding to the needs of day laborers, and by extension, to the needs of a globalized, migrant workforce. My Note argues that by failing to adapt to changes …

Place, Memory, And The Civil War: Historic Memory And The Mechanisms Of Interpretation At Civil War Sites In Arkansas, Walter Wright Porter Jan 2017

Place, Memory, And The Civil War: Historic Memory And The Mechanisms Of Interpretation At Civil War Sites In Arkansas, Walter Wright Porter

Student Theses and Dissertations

Public understanding of the Civil War is a product of various sources that sometimes offer competing interpretations of the conflict and its meaning. Among these sources are Civil War sites that can offer connections to the past through the tangible element of place. Questions arise regarding the nature of the interpretation offered and the mechanisms historic sites use to relate their narrative to the public. Porter examines the issue through a study of six Civil War-related sites in Arkansas, assessing the scope and presentation of each site’s story. The initial part of the study examines the nature of historic memory …

Prospects For The Rule Of Law In Cyberspace, Keir Giles Mr. Jan 2017

Prospects For The Rule Of Law In Cyberspace, Keir Giles Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The application of international law and legal principles in cyberspace is a topic that has caused confusion, doubt, and interminable discussions between lawyers since the earliest days of the internationalization of the Internet. The still unresolved debate over whether cyberspace constitutes a fundamentally new domain that requires fundamentally new laws to govern it reveals basic ideological divides. On the one hand, the Euro-Atlantic community led by the United States believes, in broad terms, that activities in cyberspace require no new legislation, and existing legal obligations are sufficient. On the other, a large number of other states led by Russia and …

Critical Theory And Global Development, David Ingram Jan 2017

Critical Theory And Global Development, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This chapter explores recent research by critical theorists concerning theories of (under)development. Drawing from the research of Thomas McCarthy, Axel Honneth, Jurgen Habermas, Amy Allen, Nancy Fraser, and others, the author explores some of the divergent responses critical theorists have given toward the theory and practice of global developmental assistance. Some theorists defending a strong modernist approach to development (e.g., McCarthy, Habermas and Honneth) appear to endorse a logic of development that works within a domesticated model of capitalist markets and lending practices; others (Allen and Fraser) reject this approach. The chapter raises questions about how development that fits within …

Aposematism: An Alternative Hypothesis On How We Discover Medicinal Organisms, Nemer E. Narchi Jan 2017

Aposematism: An Alternative Hypothesis On How We Discover Medicinal Organisms, Nemer E. Narchi

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The most widely accepted theories as to how primates select medicinal organisms are based on smelling-tasting bitter, and most of the times toxic, plants (Etkin & Ross, 1982; Johns, 1990). In primates, however, the senses of smell and taste are not as dominant as vision, an evolutionary trait which has been proven to be one of the most favored. I present a perspective claiming that aposematism, the conspicuous coloration displayed by toxic organisms, may play an important role in human recognition of medicinal organisms. This paper represents an open invitation for ecological anthropologists and ethnobiologists to generate empirical data that …

Manhattan_Project.Exe: A Nuclear Option For The Digital Age, David Laton

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

This article explores the possible implications and consequences arising from the use of an artificial intelligence construct as a weapon of mass destruction. The digital age has ushered in many technological advances, as well as certain dangers. Chief among these pitfalls is the lack of reliable security found in critical information technology systems. These security gaps can give cybercriminals unauthorized access to highly sensitive computer networks that control the very infrastructure of the United States. Cyberattacks are rising in both frequency and severity and the response by the U.S. has been ineffective. A cyber-weapon of mass destruction (CWMD) implementing an …
