Reduced-Drift Virtual Gyro From An Array Of Low-Cost Gyros, Richard Vaccaro, Ahmed S. Zaki Feb 2017

Reduced-Drift Virtual Gyro From An Array Of Low-Cost Gyros, Richard Vaccaro, Ahmed S. Zaki

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A Kalman filter approach for combining the outputs of an array of high-drift gyros to obtain a virtual lower-drift gyro has been known in the literature for more than a decade. The success of this approach depends on the correlations of the random drift components of the individual gyros. However, no method of estimating these correlations has appeared in the literature. This paper presents an algorithm for obtaining the statistical model for an array of gyros, including the cross-correlations of the individual random drift components. In order to obtain this model, a new statistic, called the “Allan covariance” between two …

Sports Leaders, Sensemaking, And Self-Preservation: Uncovering The Real Crisis In Sport, Daryl L. Jones Feb 2017

Sports Leaders, Sensemaking, And Self-Preservation: Uncovering The Real Crisis In Sport, Daryl L. Jones

Student Scholarship

The sports industry often experiences critical, high-risk situations related to crisis management decisions. Devastating consequences often occur because of the methods used by sports leaders in processing information associated with crisis. As chaotic as these crisis-based events may be; often times the true antecedents of crisis result from practices and processes that exist within, not outside of, sports organizations. Despite the global economic impact and increasing significance of sports, there is a shortage of empirical research to help us understand key influences on industry leaders, specifically related to times of crisis. The factors that impact the formation of perspectives and …

Protecting The Upper Chesapeake Bay: Fort Hollingsworth (1813-1815), Elk River, Cecil County, Maryland, James G. Gibb, William E. Stephens, Peter C. Quantock, Daniel G. Coates, Ralph Eshelman Feb 2017

Protecting The Upper Chesapeake Bay: Fort Hollingsworth (1813-1815), Elk River, Cecil County, Maryland, James G. Gibb, William E. Stephens, Peter C. Quantock, Daniel G. Coates, Ralph Eshelman

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Fort Hollingsworth, erected in April 1813 by the citizens of Cecil County, Maryland, was a small breastwork that protected the upper reaches of the Chesapeake Bay and the “backdoor” to Philadelphia during the War of 1812. Fort Hollingsworth saw brief action in 1814. After the war, it was demolished and the land returned to farming. Geophysical surveying, exploratory soil borings, detailed topographic mapping, and focused excavation conducted by the Archeological Society of Maryland convincingly and economically identified the footprint of Fort Hollingsworth. Methodological considerations are here coupled with a discussion of vernacular fortifications and the implications that unconventional fortifications have …

The Sunken Vessels Of Chauncey And Yeo In Lake Ontario, Ben Ford Feb 2017

The Sunken Vessels Of Chauncey And Yeo In Lake Ontario, Ben Ford

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Naval power was central to controlling the Great Lakes and, by extension, the interior of North America during the War of 1812. On Lake Ontario, the naval conflict took the form of an arms race with virtually no actual engagements. As a result, few vessels were lost during the war. With the signing of the Rush-Bagot Agreement, however, both belligerents sold vessels and put others in storage, resulting in the wrecks of lost or abandoned war vessels all over the lake. Many of these vessels have been located and studied over the last century. This paper reviews the vessels that …

An Examination Of John Burton’S Method Of Conflict Resolution And Its Applicability To The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, John Kenneth Steinmeyer Feb 2017

An Examination Of John Burton’S Method Of Conflict Resolution And Its Applicability To The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, John Kenneth Steinmeyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper argues that the interactive problem-solving workshops created by political scientist John Burton and applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by social psychologist Herbert Kelman, while not, as yet, resulting in a just and permanent peace agreement, are effective in resolving intractable conflict, and, if persistently used, can significantly help to produce such an agreement. This is done by closely examining two books of Burton and a series of articles by Kelman to describe their process; the characteristics of intractable conflict are also reviewed from the work of social psychologist Daniel Bar-Tal. It is then argued that the psychological elements …

History, Egyptology, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Case Study From A Biblical Foundation, Michael G. Hasel, Ph.D. Feb 2017

History, Egyptology, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Case Study From A Biblical Foundation, Michael G. Hasel, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

This is a case study that follows the principles developed in the first conference paper presented in the Biblical Foundations for Faith and Learning Conference (Cancun, 2011) and specifically applies these principles to a problem in the narrow field of History, Egyptology, and the Bible. Due to political and ideological reasons the field of Egyptology has been largely isolated from biblical studies and the history of Canaan and Israel. In recent years, minimalist biblical scholars have challenged the long-held consensus that the peoples, places, and polities of Canaan and Israel existed in the second millennium. The biblical references to these …

Mismeasuring Humanity: Dangers Of "The Contemporary Orthodoxy", Vincent M. Smiles Feb 2017

Mismeasuring Humanity: Dangers Of "The Contemporary Orthodoxy", Vincent M. Smiles

Headwaters

The various unjust discriminations (racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc.) that plague society are tied to the larger question of how human lives and minds are regarded in society as a whole. Humans have always had a problem of mismeasuring the “other,” but this problem is compounded by promotion, from powerful voices, of the view that humans are just so much physics and chemistry, that the mind is the brain, and that humans are deluded about the power of consciousness and freedom. Daniel Dennett refers to the latter as “the contemporary orthodoxy,” as though it is the view of humanity that all …

From the moment Rodi Alvarado Pena married a Guatemalan army officer at the age of 16, she was subjected to intensive abuse, and all her efforts to get help where unsuccessful. Her husband raped and sodimized her repeatedly, attempted to abort their child by violently kicking her in the spine, dislocated her jaw, attempted to cut her hands off with a machete, kicked her in her genitals and used her head to break windows. He terrified her by bragging about his power to kill innocent civilians with impunity and all of Rodi’s pleas for help from the Guatemalan government were …

Waiting For Gluskabe: An Examination Of Maine's Colonialist Legacy Suffered By Native American Tribes Under The Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act Of 1980, Joseph G.E. Gousse Feb 2017

Waiting For Gluskabe: An Examination Of Maine's Colonialist Legacy Suffered By Native American Tribes Under The Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act Of 1980, Joseph G.E. Gousse

Maine Law Review

Legends of the Wabanaki people tell of a mythical demigod named Gluskabe. Immortalized through the cultural traditions of the Wabanaki—from the Mi’kmaq, Abenaki, and Passamaquoddy to the Maliseet and the Penobscot—Gluskabe appears as an integral component of each tribe’s variation of the Creation Myth, as well as numerous other tales and stories. Most prominently, Gluskabe is known for his role in creating the Penobscot River and divining proportion and harmony in the natural world, using his power to reduce the size of the once-giant land animals to establish the first village, legend holds that Gluskabe retired to the southernmost portion …

Does Society Need Imo Medalists?, Man Keung Siu

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

With a title that sounds provocative but with no intention to embarrass the organizers and participants of the event of IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) this article should be seen as the sharing of some thoughts on this activity, or more generally on mathematical competitions, by a teacher of mathematics who had once helped in the coaching of the first Hong Kong Team to take part in the 29th IMO held in Canberra in 1988 and in the coordination work of the 35th IMO held in Hong Kong in 1994. The author tries to look at the issue in …

Why The Classroom Is A Sacred Place For Me And Why I’Ll Keep Venturing Out Into “No-Man’S Land”… Even During These Abortion Wars, Rose Holz

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Faculty Publications

The classroom, as I see it, is not a place where I impose my views. It is a place for the free exchange of ideas even—no, especially—if they differ from my own. Otherwise, how else are we going to learn? Otherwise, how else are we going to get to know each other—maybe even like each other—even if sometimes we hold radically different views? And of course again, I would be lying if I didn’t mention just how many times I’ve miserably failed in this regard. But I’m also happy to report how over the years I’ve managed to achieve a …
