‘A Matter Of Opinion’: British Attempts To Assess The Attrition Of German Manpower, 1915–1917, Louis Halewood Apr 2017

‘A Matter Of Opinion’: British Attempts To Assess The Attrition Of German Manpower, 1915–1917, Louis Halewood

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Revisionist historians of the Western Front have demonstrated that Britain had no alternative but to wage a war of attrition to defeat Germany. However, the effort to assess this process has been neglected in the historiography. This article explores British attempts to gauge the success of their strategy of wearing down German manpower. Efforts in London proved unable to supply a convincing answer. Using General Headquarters’ dubious estimates from the front, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig argued that his strategy was working. Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s inability to confound these estimates shaped his decision to permit the Passchendaele offensive.

The New Information Governance Playbook For Addressing Digital Age Threats, Philip Favro, Donald Billings, David Horrigan, Adam Kuhn

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The demand within organizations to manage the growth of electronic information has never been greater. Organizations across the spectrum of industry verticals are generally struggling to address the onslaught of data they both generate and receive. While there is nothing new to this trend, companies should be concerned about new threats arising from that data. From lax internal protocols and unsecured corporate networks to malicious insiders and cyber criminals, these threats—if left unchecked—could threaten the viability of the enterprise.

Let’S Stop Playing Games: A Consistent Test For Unlicensed Trademark Use And The Right Of Publicity In Video Games, Arlen Papazian Apr 2017

Let’S Stop Playing Games: A Consistent Test For Unlicensed Trademark Use And The Right Of Publicity In Video Games, Arlen Papazian

William & Mary Business Law Review

Courts cannot agree on how to handle cases centered on unlicensed use of a trademark or celebrity’s likeness in video games. Two tests have arisen as the primary standards by which to judge such cases: the Rogers test and the transformative-use test. However, in an area of law muddled by multiple standards and the inconsistent application of those standards to a relatively new medium, neither test can adequately balance mark holder rights with the constitutional rights of video game developers. In this turmoil, large video game companies take advantage of marks and licenses knowing the rightful holders will have little …

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field is greatly promoted as a career path for students in recent years, and the demand for individuals specializing in STEM disciplines is expected to rise. Often, when considering STEM, one thinks of careers related to medicine, laboratory settings, or the pure sciences. However, in examining only these aspects of STEM, we may errantly overlook the impacts that P-20 education may have in using STEM as a means for improving student lives. One unique aspect of STEM is its role in helping to improve our well being as individuals and society as a …

"Returning To The Root" Of The Problem: Improving The Social Condition Of African Americans Through Science And Mathematics Education, Vanessa R. Pitts Bannister, Julius Davis, Jomo Mutegi, Latasha Thompson, Deborah Lewis Apr 2017

"Returning To The Root" Of The Problem: Improving The Social Condition Of African Americans Through Science And Mathematics Education, Vanessa R. Pitts Bannister, Julius Davis, Jomo Mutegi, Latasha Thompson, Deborah Lewis

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

The underachievement and underrepresentation of African Americans in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines have been well documented. Efforts to improve the STEM education of African Americans continue to focus on relationships between teaching and learning and factors such as culture, race, power, class, learning preferences, cultural styles and language. Although this body of literature is deemed valuable, it fails to help STEM teacher educators and teachers critically assess other important factors such as pedagogy and curriculum. In this article, the authors argue that both pedagogy and curriculum should be centered on the social condition of African Americans – …

The Narrator, The Mute, And The Familiar: Configurations Of Children In War Films, Kiyomi Wilks Apr 2017

The Narrator, The Mute, And The Familiar: Configurations Of Children In War Films, Kiyomi Wilks

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis undertakes the examination of how and why children often figure prominently in films about war. Rather than accept the common argument that innocence is what makes children compelling as victims and objects of observation, this thesis argues that children in war films subvert dominant narratives about war and victimhood by asking questions that pierce through accepted narratives, revealing the child as an agent in possession of an adult knowledge that seems to run contrary to attempts to display the child as a naive innocent. The children in the three movies under examination-- The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) …

The Global Positioning System, Brendon Baker

Physics Capstone Projects

This research study explores the Global Positioning System (GPS), its history, and the process of discovery needed to create the most accurate GPS possible, as well as the contemporary applications of GPS technology. Starting with the first satellite in space, GPS has been a work in progress. Originally pursued by the military for improvements to military tactics, GPS has become integrated into the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. How GPS determines location is a dichotomy, with simplistic theory and complex application. Many factors go into GPS to provide a consistent, accurate location. The orbital planes the …

The In-Between: Tea Talks, Lexa Walsh

The In-Between: Tea Talks

Created by Lexa Walsh and participating diners and writers

The In Between: Tea Talks is a series of intimate facilitated discussions over home cooked meals that bring together conflicting populations of artists, activists and workers to discuss topics affecting them in the Bay Area. The project gathers artists, writers, tech workers, “sharing economy” laborers (Uber and Lyft drivers, AirBnB hosts) and their critics (taxi drivers, tenants rights activists) together in a hospitable environment so each may share their positions in a safe yet open and critical dialogue. Each position is respectfully held in the space. The conversations are documented in …

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford Apr 2017

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford

History ETDs

In the fall of 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton sent Kit Carson and about four hundred men on a punitive campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians of the high plains. The resulting battle was one of the largest in the history of North American Indian Wars. Yet this conflict has been relegated to historical obscurity.

In this paper, I examine why Kit Carson’s 1864 Adobe Walls Campaign remains obscure, I measure the success of the mission, and place it in the larger context of nineteenth century Indian Wars, particularly those prosecuted against Plains tribes.

Is President Trump More Like Viktor Orbán Or Franklin Pierce, Thomas Keck Apr 2017

Is President Trump More Like Viktor Orbán Or Franklin Pierce, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

Perhaps the most pressing question facing U.S. political science today is how best to understand the Donald Trump presidency. In helping us along toward this goal, I draw on two styles of contemporary political science research—historical analysis of cycles of American political development and interpretive analysis of constitutional politics—as well as my own direct participation in local grassroots organizing since November 2016. The two bodies of existing literature run far wide of the central current of mainstream political science, and drawing directly on my own first-hand experience is even more atypical, but there are important lessons to be drawn from …

The 1942 Laconia Order, The Murder Of Shipwrecked Survivors And The Allied Pursuit Of Justice 1945-46, G. H. Bennett

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article examines the post-war trials of three German naval officers in connection with the Laconia order of 1942. It sets their behaviour, and the order, in the context of maritime custom and the practices of the German submarine arm between 1939 and 1945. It establishes linkages between the three trials and highlights the British Admiralty's faltering pursuit of the German submarine arm over the supposed practice of murdering shipwreck survivors from Allied vessels.

Death, Taxes, And Property (Rights): Nozick, Libertarianism, And The Estate Tax, Jennifer Bird-Pollan Apr 2017

Death, Taxes, And Property (Rights): Nozick, Libertarianism, And The Estate Tax, Jennifer Bird-Pollan

Maine Law Review

Over the last twelve years the estate tax has been eviscerated. Evolving from a tax at 55% on all estates over $675,000 to a tax at only 35% on estates over $5.12 million per person ($10.24 million for a married couple); the estate tax now taxes only about 5,300 estates per year, as opposed to over 58,000 estates in 1999. In an era of language decrying class warfare, why abandon this project of the estate tax? Is it too late to save the tax? Are there reasons to save it? Why have an estate tax in the first place? Libertarian …

Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho Apr 2017

Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho

Theses and Dissertations

Legislative acts, political discourse, and social movements have highlighted how who immigrants are and where they are from play a substantial role in how they are received. Ewing (2012) noted that decisions regarding the U.S. immigration system are “often shaped more by public fears and anxieties than by sound public policy” (p. 2). The media often ignore the multiple challenges faced by immigrants and instead focus solely on their legal status (Nittle, 2012). Experiencing prejudice, on an individual and institutional level, has detrimental effects on the individual’s physical well-being, emotional well-being, and achievements and success in life. Research has indicated …

A Darwinian Look At Atonement Theory, A. Rachel Ritchie Apr 2017

A Darwinian Look At Atonement Theory, A. Rachel Ritchie

Dialogue & Nexus

After presenting various atonement theories, especially in light of evolutionary explanation, I conducted a brief survey among students to determine their level of theological understanding and scientific literacy. Based on this data, I conclude that students are given a poor education in theology. This paucity of wisdom needs to be mitigated. I offer some suggestions for rectifying this lacuna.
