A Review Of Prosthetic Hand Control Signal Source, Feng Du, Gongfa Li, Du Jiang, Ying Sun, Guozhang Jiang, Jianyi Kong
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Human limbs systemic function is complicated and the feedback is very abundant. How to make sure hands signal source becomes a very complicated conundrum with the push of development. After the theory of control is proposed, researchers spend much time on doing research. With the development of science technology, the requirement of prosthetic hands’ multi-perceived information feedback is higher and higher in biomedical field and ammunition industry. Research on signal source about hand prostheses become a hotpot for long time. Nowadays, control signal sources are used to control prosthetic hand include mechanical movement, voice, reconstructed fingers, EMG, EEG, MEG and …

Development Of Semg Sensing Techniques For Hand Prostheses, Wanfen Xu, Gongfa Li, Disi Chen, Zhe Li, Jianyi Kong, Guozhang Jiang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In order to make prosthetic hands acting like human hands as much as possible and improve the biomimetics and intelligence, it is necessary to add multi-sensor perception system on electric prosthetic hand system. In this paper, the theory of sEMG and its signal analysis technology are introduced. SEMG sensing techniques for hand prostheses are surveyed. These sensing techniques include tactile and slip sensing, proximity sensing, cold and hot sensing, and multi-sensing fusion. Meanwhile these prosthetic hands sensors and sEMG sensing techniques are compared. Some further researches and developing trend of sEMG sensing techniques for hand prostheses are indicated.
Child Soldiers Recruitment And Use In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo: An Ethical Perspective, Ismael Matambura
Child Soldiers Recruitment And Use In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo: An Ethical Perspective, Ismael Matambura
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The Great Lakes Region in Africa, is living today in constant insecurity and leadership instability for more than two decades. This situation affects the Congo and most of its neighboring countries in the East. This crisis gets its roots, among others, in the colonization since the “scramble for Africa” in 1885. This region has never experienced a long running period of political stability and peace. On the destructive colonizer’s method of “divide and conquer,” one could add ethnic conflict that led to horrible situations, including the genocide in Rwanda. From 1885 to 2006, year of the first peacefully elected government, …
Mindfulness For Teachers: A Plan For Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Growth, Bryan Meyer
Mindfulness For Teachers: A Plan For Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Growth, Bryan Meyer
MA TESOL Collection
Stress is a malady pervasive in today’s culture, which schools are not immune. Teachers are under pressure to raise standardized test scores while students spend more of each day sitting in their seats trying to learn increasingly more abstract concepts at younger ages. All of this leads to a stressful environment. However, there are tools and skills that can be learned to minimize the stress an individual encounters and provide a means to live with more engagement, creativity, and happiness. The author uses his twenty years of meditation and yoga experience to create materials that teachers can implement in their …
William Walker And The Seeds Of Progressive Imperialism: The War In Nicaragua And The Message Of Regeneration, 1855-1860, John J. Mangipano
William Walker And The Seeds Of Progressive Imperialism: The War In Nicaragua And The Message Of Regeneration, 1855-1860, John J. Mangipano
Dissertations
For a brief period of time, between 1855 and 1857, William Walker successfully portrayed himself to American audiences as the regenerator of Nicaragua. Though he arrived in Nicaragua in June 1855, with only fifty-eight men, his image as a regenerator attracted several-thousand men and women to join him in his mission to stabilize the region. Walker relied on both his medical studies as well as his experience in journalism to craft a message of regeneration that placated the anxieties that many Americans felt about the instability of the Caribbean. People supported Walker because he provided a strategy of regeneration that …
Virtual Futures: Transfiguring Borders And Transcending Boundaries, Brittany Marie Pickens
Virtual Futures: Transfiguring Borders And Transcending Boundaries, Brittany Marie Pickens
Theses and Dissertations from 2017
This project argues that mind uploading and virtual reality are the most likely solutions to the human-driven climate change that will render the Earth unlivable. Drawing on scientific research, the speculations of science fiction, and critical theory, this project first argues that this solution is most probable because it exploits current capitalist trends and does not demand the sacrifice of luxury; concomitantly, it functions as a solution to problems outside of climate change and human survival regarding human health, progress, evolution and [interstellar] exploration. This project further explores: 1) what problems mind uploading could solve and to what extent; 2) …

The Healing Of America: The Path To Reconciliation, Michael Lee Spangle
The Healing Of America: The Path To Reconciliation, Michael Lee Spangle
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The 2016 presidential election exposed the presence of wide divisiveness in U.S. culture between political groups, racial groups, levels of education, rural and city areas, and religions. Expressions of polarization between groups occurred in episodes of violence, protests, marches, and disrespectful behavior among candidates. This article suggests that reconciliation between groups will not occur without a commitment to facing the truth about social problems in America, forgiveness for harms committed, demonstration of concern for the social welfare of the disadvantaged, and commitment to serving as agents of peace. Included is a case study that demonstrates how one community used many …
Becoming Whole Again: A Qualitative Study Of Veterans' Return To Civilian Life, Katherine Mitchell
Becoming Whole Again: A Qualitative Study Of Veterans' Return To Civilian Life, Katherine Mitchell
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Veterans returning from the recent Middle East wars report struggling with a variety of transition issues related to wartime experiences and due to the socialization they received as part of their indoctrination into military life. Many veterans experience practical and emotional adjustment challenges related to experiences common to military personnel regardless of combat exposure that may not appear for months or years after separating from the military. Much of the existing research has focused on quantitative measures of veterans’ transition. There is a need for a greater qualitative research focus on understanding the subjective experience of coming home and what …
The Effects Of Historical Trauma And Gender On National Identity Within The Hmong Diaspora, Kalia Vang
The Effects Of Historical Trauma And Gender On National Identity Within The Hmong Diaspora, Kalia Vang
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
Since 1975 the Hmong have settled in the West as a diasporic group. Their involvement in the Vietnam and Secret Wars with the United States in Southeast Asia had forced the group to flee their homes in the mountain tops of Laos. This political migration has since forced Hmong leaders to reframe Hmong national identity in the diaspora, specifically in the United States. With this, certain aspects and perspective from Hmong women on the Secret War were marginalized. Thus, this research asks the following question: why is national identity interpreted differently within the Hmong diaspora? This research project is broken …

Peril And Promise: Emerging Technologies And Wmd, Natasha E. Bajema, Diane Dieuliis
Peril And Promise: Emerging Technologies And Wmd, Natasha E. Bajema, Diane Dieuliis
Research and Case Studies
Emerging technologies are transforming life, industry, and the global economy in positive ways, but they also have significant potential for subversion by states and nonstate actors. National security experts, lawmakers, and policymakers have become increasingly concerned about the interactions among a number of emerging technologies that could alter and increase the threats from weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Many emerging technologies have an indirect impact on the WMD space, but only a handful are likely to have direct enabling effects for state and nonstate actors seeking WMD. Such technologies are expected to have serious effects on both the nature of …
How World War Ii Affected The Economic And Social Life Of East Tennessee, Stuart N. Shelton
How World War Ii Affected The Economic And Social Life Of East Tennessee, Stuart N. Shelton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Much has been written about America’s entry into World War II. However, little attention has been given to the war’s effects on the social and economic lives of the people of East Tennessee who both benefited and suffered from the presence of many wartime facilities and industries. World War II also affected those civilians living and working on the home front. While its men had to fight in foreign lands, the region had to deal with food, housing, and labor shortages, the changing roles of women and African-Americans, and even the presence of enemy prisoners of war. This paper intends …

In the summer of 2016 a technology revolution swept the world from an unsuspecting place, a mobile game called Pokémon: Go. Almost immediately upon release, this application reached white-hot growth with a user-base spanning the globe, sparking new methods of interacting with communities. Behind the app, a driving force of the popularity, is the technology known as augmented reality (AR). This innovative medium, which intersects the “real-world” with the “digital-world,” is set to impact many aspects of life. As planning professionals are closely involved with the development and growth of communities, this thesis serves as a tool to determine how …

Defending Reconstruction, Allen C. Guelzo
Defending Reconstruction, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
There are no Reconstruction re-enactors. And who would want to be? Reconstruction is the disappointing epilogue to the American Civil War, a sort of Grimm fairy tale stepchild of the war and the ugly duckling of American history. Even Abraham Lincoln was uneasy at using the word “reconstruction”—he qualified it with add-ons like “what is called reconstruction” or “a plan of reconstruction (as the phrase goes)”—and preferred to speak of the “re-inauguration of the national authority” or the need to “re-inaugurate loyal state governments.” Unlike the drama of the war years, Reconstruction has no official starting or ending date. ( …

Harvey Kurtzman was an American cartoonist and editor. He is most famous for writing and editing the parodic comic book MAD from 1952 until 1956 and writing the “Little Annie Fanny†strips for Playboy magazine from 1962 to 1988. Kurtzman is known for his satirical display of popular culture, social critique, and his meticulous work methodologies through satirical engagement. Kurtzman critiqued, denounced and ridiculed cultural figures, politicians, and out of control consumerism. This essay will explore Kurtzman’s work through published examples and interviews. I will explore his early works, his work with MAD and several publications following his tenure with …

Chapter 1 will focus on defining the concept of lawfare and drafting an operational definition of lawfare. Chapter 2 focuses on the evolution of the lawfare doctrine established by the People's Republic of China (PRC), identifies the current lawfare operations conducted by the PRC in the fields of maritime, airspace, cyberspace, and outer space, and analyzing the implications of PRC lawfare operations …
Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg
Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg
Masters Theses
The objective of this thesis is to apply commonly held statistics in the world of missiology regarding folk Islamic practices to the least likely country for such practices to be found, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is believed by most to be the birth-site of an austere, strict, orthodox form of Islam, responsible for the nature and nurture (education, promotion, and financing) of Islamic extremism. Conversely, I posit that through tracing the development of Wahhabism and its current global influence on Islam, its literalist interpretation becomes a profitable tool for the student of anthropology, missiology, and cross-cultural studies to gain a …
Empirical Challenges To Studying Terrorism And Homicide, Joseph K. Young, Erin M. Kearns
Empirical Challenges To Studying Terrorism And Homicide, Joseph K. Young, Erin M. Kearns
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The study of terrorism has bridged multiple scholarly domains. Terrorism is discussed within political science as a form of political violence (Crenshaw 1981) related to civil conflict (Findley and Young 2012) and interstate war (Findley, Piazza, and Young 2012). Terrorism is studied within criminology as a form of criminal violence along with homicide and assault, and under political crime as a form of oppositional action put alongside sedition and treason (J.I. Ross 2006). In scholarly work, it is becoming increasingly more common to see works on terrorism connected to political violence (e.g., Thomas 2014) or political crimes (e.g., Chermak, Freilich, …
