Evaluating Missionary-Care Responsibilities: A Guide For Sending And Supporting Churches, Donald Hall
Evaluating Missionary-Care Responsibilities: A Guide For Sending And Supporting Churches, Donald Hall
Masters Theses
A thoughtful approach to global missions requires a team of support personnel. This team, composed of the sending church, the supporting churches, the missions agency and other supporters, is effective when it works together to recruit, train, and maintain a healthy missionary workforce, but a sub-standard support structure jeopardizes the mission. Sadly, many sending churches do not properly understand or fulfill their missionary-care roles and responsibilities. This project provides a biblical, philosophical, and practical methodology by which churches can properly evaluate their responsibilities and address gaps in their missionary-care ministry. In the model presented in this paper, the sending church …
Islamist State: Various Visions?, Shehab Wagih
Islamist State: Various Visions?, Shehab Wagih
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes original texts produced by ideologues and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, Qaeda and Islamic State to deduce their vision for the Islamist State. The thesis reveals the positions of the three movements from the institutions of Caliphate, Sharia, and Democracy, in addition to their tolerance of using violence as a strategy to install the Islamist State. The thesis concludes that the three movements are willing to install the Islamist Caliphate and apply Sharia law. Yet, they disagree on the strategy that has to be applied to achieve this end. The thesis explains the reasons behind the disagreement …
Correlating Ethnographic Data With Spatial Analysis Of Archaeological Sites: A Case Study From Ca-Ora-507 And The Aliso Creek Region, Matthew V. Stever
Correlating Ethnographic Data With Spatial Analysis Of Archaeological Sites: A Case Study From Ca-Ora-507 And The Aliso Creek Region, Matthew V. Stever
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Ethnographers in the early 20th century compiled notes and published reports and books concerning the cultures and life-ways of the California Indians. Among these are the Juaneño (Acjachemen) and Gabrielino (Tongva) peoples.
This study aimed to correlate ethnographic data with methods of spatial archaeology and GIS analysis to test if the privately owned resource collecting areas and tribal boundaries described in the ethnographies could be seen archaeologically. Centered on CA-ORA-507 (an ancient chert quarry), the study shows that the boundaries between these resource areas are culturally derived as well as a part of the greater pattern …
Interpretation Catalysts In Cyberspace, Rebecca Ingber
Interpretation Catalysts In Cyberspace, Rebecca Ingber
Faculty Scholarship
The cybersphere offers a rich space from which to explore the development of international law in a compressed time frame. This piece examines the soft law process over the last decade of the two Tallinn Manuals – handbooks on the international law of cyber warfare and cyber operations – as a valuable lens through which to witness the effects of “interpretation catalysts” on the evolution of international law. In prior work, I identified the concept of interpretation catalysts – discrete triggers for legal interpretation – and their influence on the path that legal evolution takes, including by compelling a decision-making …

China Maritime Report No. 2: The Arming Of China’S Maritime Frontier, Ryan D. Martinson
China Maritime Report No. 2: The Arming Of China’S Maritime Frontier, Ryan D. Martinson
CMSI China Maritime Reports
China’s expansion in maritime East Asia has relied heavily on non-naval elements of sea power, above all white-hulled constabulary forces. This reflects a strategic decision. Coast guard vessels operating on the basis of routine administration and backed up by a powerful military can achieve many of China’s objectives without risking an armed clash, sullying China’s reputation, or provoking military intervention from outside powers.
Among China’s many maritime agencies, two organizations particularly fit this bill: China Marine Surveillance (CMS) and China Fisheries Law Enforcement (FLE). With fleets comprising unarmed or lightly armed cutters crewed by civilian administrators, CMS and FLE could …
Cybercrime Deterrence And International Legislation: Evidence From Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks, Kai-Lung Hui, Seung Hyun Kim, Qiu-Hong Wang
Cybercrime Deterrence And International Legislation: Evidence From Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks, Kai-Lung Hui, Seung Hyun Kim, Qiu-Hong Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we estimate the impact of enforcing the Convention on Cybercrime (COC) on deterring distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. Our data set comprises a sample of real, random spoof-source DDOS attacks recorded in 106 countries in 177 days in the period 2004-2008. We find that enforcing the COC decreases DDOS attacks by at least 11.8 percent, but a similar deterrence effect does not exist if the enforcing countries make a reservation on international cooperation. We also find evidence of network and displacement effects in COC enforcement. Our findings imply attackers in cyberspace are rational, motivated by economic …

Low-Cost Jetting System; Space And Naval Warfare Systems Command (Spawar), Carson B. Bush, Daly Sombat, Charles J. Kleeman
Mechanical Engineering
SPAWAR, a research and development side of the U.S. Navy, needed a way to bury classified payloads below the seafloor in order to anchor the devices. They currently use a jetting system that costs around $20,000 to do it, and they desired a cheaper system capable of performing the same tasks. SPAWAR presented the project to Cal Poly Mechanical Engineers as a senior project in the fall of 2016.
The design team that decided to take on the project was interested in creating the system with two key factors in mind in order to make the device less expensive.

The Double-Edged Sword: Globalization And International Islamic Terrorism, Yara Toutounji
The Double-Edged Sword: Globalization And International Islamic Terrorism, Yara Toutounji
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates the relationship between globalization and international Islamic terrorism in the modern age of the twenty-first century. It argues that globalization acts as a double-edged sword by both empowering terrorism and, at the same time, international Islamic terrorism is a defensive reaction to the very process of globalization itself. Also, it argues against the dominant Western discourse, which labels Islam as the main cause of international Islamic terrorism by applying a critical discourse analysis that aims at reconstructing the dominant discourse. Along these lines, this work advances that three main underlying sets of popularly held international grievances involving …
Reconstructing Whiteness In Ambrose Bierce, Jordan Weber
Reconstructing Whiteness In Ambrose Bierce, Jordan Weber
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This essay analyzes the works of American author, journalist, and satirist Ambrose Bierce through the lens of whiteness studies. It compares Bierce's work to the popular literature. Its primary investigation is into the ideological project of white-identity and national reunion as it is played out in sentimentalist war memoirs and plantation romances that flooded the market at the end of the 19th century. Analyzing Bierce's war writing, horror fiction, and journalism it tracks a formation of whiteness counter to the popular narratives of the era.
The Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On The Archaeology At Edwards Air Force Base, Jessica Amanda Porter-Rodriguez
The Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On The Archaeology At Edwards Air Force Base, Jessica Amanda Porter-Rodriguez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
A series of severe and prolonged droughts occurred throughout the Northern Hemisphere between approximately 1150 BP to 600 BP. This phenomenon is referred to as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly and has been shown to have differentially impacted various regions of the world. Previous studies have suggested causal links between the Medieval Climatic Anomaly and observed culture change.
The goal of this study was to examine the Antelope Valley region of the Mojave Desert for evidence of impacts on human populations related to the Medieval Climatic Anomaly. To achieve this goal, a sample selection of archaeological sites was chosen from lands …
Deadly Hostility: Feud, Violence, And Power In Early Anglo-Saxon England, David Ditucci
Deadly Hostility: Feud, Violence, And Power In Early Anglo-Saxon England, David Ditucci
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the existence and political relevance of feud in Anglo-Saxon England from the fifth century migration to the opening of the Viking Age in 793. The central argument is that feud was a method that Anglo-Saxons used to understand and settle conflict, and that it was a tool kings used to enhance their power. The first part of this study examines the use of fæhð in Old English documents, including laws and Beowulf, to demonstrate that fæhð referred to feuds between parties marked by reciprocal acts of retaliation. This assertion is in opposition to Guy Halsall’s argument that …
Experimental Study Of Bubble Rupture During Shock-Fluid Interaction, Subhalakshmi Chandrasekaran
Experimental Study Of Bubble Rupture During Shock-Fluid Interaction, Subhalakshmi Chandrasekaran
Theses
Head injuries are associated with exposure to high energy explosive detonation. There are four distinct types of blast induced neurotrauma (BINT): 1) these caused by supersonic shock waves propagating in the atmosphere (primary), 2) high velocity impact of shrapnel and debris (secondary) 3) acceleration and deceleration of the body and collision with the solid objects in the field (tertiary) and 4) exposure to high temperature and toxic gases (quaternary). One of the mechanisms implicated in non-impact primary blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is cavitation. It is hypothesized that cavitation can occur in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) layer, brain interstitial fluid, …
Smoking As A Form Of Persistence In A Christian Nipmuc Community, Jessica Ann Rymer
Smoking As A Form Of Persistence In A Christian Nipmuc Community, Jessica Ann Rymer
Graduate Masters Theses
The goal of this thesis is to determine the role that smoking played in the gatherings taking place at the Sarah Burnee/Sarah Boston farmstead and what its presence meant for the Nipmuc who gathered there. Previous work has firmly established that the farmstead functioned as a site of communal feasting for the Hassanamesco Nipmuc using ceramic and faunal evidence, and Heather Law in her 2008 thesis suggested that the site may have operated as an “informal tavern” based on her analysis of the glass assemblage. In all of these studies clay tobacco pipe fragments were utilized for stem bore diameter …
Expendable: Eight Soldiers From Massachusetts Regiments Executed For Desertion During The United States Civil War, Stephen F. Ragon
Expendable: Eight Soldiers From Massachusetts Regiments Executed For Desertion During The United States Civil War, Stephen F. Ragon
Graduate Masters Theses
The written history of the United States Civil War provides limited analysis on the topic of desertion and execution for desertion in the Army of the Potomac. The specific numbers involved are well documented. With the exception of occasional narratives on the executions themselves, there is no examination of the human decisions taken; beginning with the soldier’s choice to desert. In addition, while the military court-martial trial was rigid in its structure and process, it allowed for discretion in the sentencing phase. Human choice exerted its greatest influence in the aftermath of the trial as the sentence was reviewed up …
21st-Century Challenges Of Command: A View From The Field, Anna Simons Dr.
21st-Century Challenges Of Command: A View From The Field, Anna Simons Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Leadership receives a tremendous amount of attention, but what about the day-to-day command challenges that confront O-4s, O-5s, and O-6s in today’s war zones? What has command entailed over the past decade and a half for special operations force (SOF) commanders who have deployed to Afghanistan (and Iraq) either to lead or to work under Special Operations Task Forces (SOTFs) or Combined Joint Special Operations Task Forces (CJSOTFs)? In both theaters, officers have had to contend with various competing hierarchies and significant churn. What then might the Army and military do to obviate or mitigate these and other problems? The …

Faculty Scholarship
Amici curiae, legal experts in international and constitutional law, believe that a majority of the en banc panel in Bahlul v. United States, 840 F.3d 757 (D.C. Cir. 2016) (en banc), mistakenly affirmed Ali Hamza Ahmad Suliman al Bahlul’s conviction by a military commission for a non-international war crime. The main concurring opinion in that case misconceived how international law defines the jurisdiction of law-of-war military commissions. As amici argue below, it is the Constitution—not international law—that limits the jurisdiction of lawof-war military commissions.
New Models Of Citizen Participation: Perennial And The Syrian Crisis – A Case Study, Matthieu John
New Models Of Citizen Participation: Perennial And The Syrian Crisis – A Case Study, Matthieu John
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
The development of transnational connections has fostered non-state actors and enabled the rise of new models of citizen participation in the global stage. Nowadays, digital tools offer social activists new means to act. This work studies the case of Perennial, a project led by two Canadian entrepreneurs, whose vision is to master social algorithms of civic participation and turn them into a public resource for all civil society. This study attempts to test if the theory on transnational activism applies to the case of Perennial. It suggests that information flow, skillful individuals, the density of transnational advocacy networks, and digital …
Ending Human Trafficking: A Stakeholder’S Challenge, Dennis V. Blanco
Ending Human Trafficking: A Stakeholder’S Challenge, Dennis V. Blanco
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
The paper analyzes the concepts, theories, causes, and methods of human trafficking as culled from various contemporary policy capacity literature which tackle human trafficking as thematic consideration and topical affair. It posits the question of the what, why, and how of human trafficking and attempts to answer these questions using an integrative review approach of literature. A critical component of the paper is its analysis and discussion on the current and prevailing stakeholder institutions, actors and agents engage in human trafficking and the corresponding challenges, opportunities and directions it needs to do to stop human trafficking.

Conversations On The Global South – Locating Duterte In Davao: An Interview With Jose Jowel Canuday, Jose Jowel Canuday, Lisandro E. Claudio
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Since our last issue, the new strongman president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has captured the attention of local and international news. He has been a controversial president, waging a war on drugs that has led to as many as 7,000 deaths according to some news reports and human rights advocates. Commentators in the Philippines and abroad continue to ask: What explains his continued popularity? For this installment of “Conversations on the Global South,” our Managing Editor, Jose Jowel Canuday (JC) removes his editorial hat and recalls the many years he spent as a journalist in Duterte’s home city of …

Two Types Of Gods: Narratives And Imagined Orders Of Islamic Spain, Brian Beegan
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the role in contemporary Spanish cultural politics of two historical narratives from Spain’s Islamic era: St. James and Convivencia. I argue that these narratives serve different political agendas as Spain comes to terms both with its past and the challenges of Muslim immigration in the present.
Abstinence-Only Sex Education In The United States: How Abstinence Curricula Have Harmed America, Moira N. Lynch
Abstinence-Only Sex Education In The United States: How Abstinence Curricula Have Harmed America, Moira N. Lynch
University Honors Theses
Abstinence-only sex education has been a prominent form of reproductive health information for adolescents in the United States. Abstinence-only sex education programs often provide data that is incorrect or factually misleading, even though they are funded with federal dollars. Because of the dated and biased information presented in abstinence-only classrooms, gender stereotypes are reinforced to base women’s worth on their sexuality, traditional marriage is touted as the paramount societal norm, and groups such as LGBQT are marginalized. Facets of abstinence-only programs such as virginity pledges do not demonstrate success in preventing premarital sexual intercourse, but may lead to adverse outcomes …
