"Be A Missionary Every Day": Evangelical Missionary Stories And The Mission Field At Home, Lauren Elizabeth Hamblen
"Be A Missionary Every Day": Evangelical Missionary Stories And The Mission Field At Home, Lauren Elizabeth Hamblen
All Theses
In evangelical churches, missionaries were regarded as heroes, and their stories were used to evangelize, entertain, and inspire. Missionary stories have been a regular feature of Sunday School lessons and religious periodicals for children since the nineteenth century, and practically every evangelical denomination dispenses them to children in some form. This project looks specifically at stories published by the two groups who carried the flag of foreign mission work in post-WWII America, Fundamentalists and Southern Baptists, between 1950 and 1980. Although the explicit purpose of these stories was to inspire an interest in foreign missionary work, even a cursory reading …

New Perspectives On The History Of The Ohio Valley Frontier, 1750-1838 : Connecting Recent Scholarship With Public Interpretation., Ellen Rich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to interpret for the public both the native and white perspectives of the conquest and colonization of the Ohio Valley frontier by Anglo-Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Its focus is a planned museum exhibition, “Conquering the First American West: The Ohio Valley Frontier, 1750-1838,” which explores interactions between American Indians and Anglo-Americans on the Ohio Valley frontier and their consequences. The introduction justifies the need for the exhibition and outlines its major arguments. The second section examines the historiography of the conquest of the Ohio Valley and shows why stronger public interpretation is needed. …

The Optimal Defense Of Networks Of Targets, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson
The Optimal Defense Of Networks Of Targets, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson
ESI Working Papers
This paper examines a game-theoretic model of attack and defense of multiple networks of targets in which there exist intra-network strategic complementarities among targets. The defender’s objective is to successfully defend all of the networks and the attacker’s objective is to successfully attack at least one network of targets. Although there are multiple equilibria, we characterize correlation structures in the allocations of forces across targets that arise in all equilibria. For example, in all equilibria the attacker utilizes a stochastic ‘guerrilla warfare’ strategy in which a single random network is attacked.
Examining The Role Of Law Of War Training In International Criminal Accountability, Laurie R. Blank
Examining The Role Of Law Of War Training In International Criminal Accountability, Laurie R. Blank
Utah Law Review
Training and dissemination of the fundamental rules and principles of law of armed conflict (LOAC) is the first step in any process to ensure lawful military operations. A soldier, a military unit, an entire military must know the rules and parameters for appropriate, lawful and effective action during armed conflict. In the same manner, accountability for violations of LOAC — whether individual criminal accountability or state responsibility — is an equally essential tool for enforcing the law. Exploring the intersection between these two endpoints of the spectrum of LOAC implementation highlights how training and accountability can actually work together to …
Electrogenerated Chemiluminescent Studies Of 9,10-Diphenylanthracene, Rubrene, Tris(2,2'-Bipyridine)Ruthenium(Ii) Species, And Their Derivatives For Sensitive Detection Of Biomolecules, Pradip Bastola
Dissertations
This dissertation explored and investigated the coreactant electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) properties of unmixed and mixed systems of highly efficient ECL emitters, such as 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA), rubrene (RUB), and tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) [(Ru(bpy)32+)] species as well as their water-soluble derivatives, which can serve as ECL labels for sensitive bioanalysis of single or multiple analytes. The screening of most favorable common ECL coreactants, their concentration effects along with the effect of working electrode materials on ECL behavior, and energy transfer related interactions between ECL emitters were systematically investigated. In addition, a strategy for improvement of ECL signals with the use of …

Marksburg: The Evolution Of Administration, Trade And Economics From 12-15th Centuries, A.D., Claire E. Beach
Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses
Between the fifth and eighth centuries AD, central Europe experienced large amounts of migration. Known as the Völkerwanderung, an estimated 750,000 people moved in bands of 10,000-20,0002 across Europe. As these bands moved across Europe, many established settlements on tribal or village systems. These new peoples created a hierarchy, setting themselves above those they defeated. Despite being socially marginalized, the original peoples remained technically free and retained full rights to their lands under the allodium system. The word allod is of Frankish origin and indicates property inherited along family lines. The right to allodial lands could not be revoked by …

Object Language
In the current era we in the Western, developed world, have almost universal free and uninhibited access to almost every piece of information in existence. Increasingly, regardless of the source, material presented to us as fact has become increasingly suspect. Together, these two things mean this endless stream of data is useless. The question is how to combat this decline, how to reverse the process of a meaningless, constant data-dump. The answer lies in the language used to communicate information. Language is the means by which we communicate complex ideas and knowledge from person to person. Language is …

Digital Anti-Forensics: An Implementation And Examination, Stephanie Dachs
Student Theses
The rise of computer use and technical adeptness by the general public in the last two decades are undeniable. With greater use comes a greater possibility for misuse, evidenced by today’s incredible number of crimes involving computers as well as the growth in severity from that of cyber hooliganism to cyber warfare. Although frequently utilized for privacy and security purposes, the vast range of anti-forensic techniques has contributed to the ability for hackers and criminals to obstruct computer forensic investigations.
Understanding how anti-forensics may alter important and relevant data on an electronic device will prove useful for the success and …
Biocidal Defeat Agents Produced By Silver-Iodine Nanoenergetic Gas Generators, Ivan Davila
Biocidal Defeat Agents Produced By Silver-Iodine Nanoenergetic Gas Generators, Ivan Davila
Theses and Dissertations
Nanostructured aluminum (Al), iodine pentoxide (I2O5) nano-rods, and silver oxide (Ag2O) nanoparticles, (Al-I2O5-Ag 2O) were used to compose the ternary thermite composition that serves as a Nanoenergetic Gas Generator (NGG). This composition produces biocidal gases giving the mixture the ability to destroy highly pathogenic microorganisms or bacteria. The dissemination of the biocidal gas in combustion chamber was observed using a high-speed camera. The testing of NGG combustion process against the living Escherichia coli (E.coli) K-12 strain cells, that were cultivated/placed on the sample/chamber surfaces, demonstrated that iodine and silver atoms clouds were deposited to the bacteria surface. The 10/75/15 wt …
Ion Trap Miniaturization Considerations: Space-Charge Effects In Cylindrical Ion Traps And Misalignment Effects In A Two-Plate Linear Ion Trap, Yuan Tian
Theses and Dissertations
Portable mass spectrometers provide convenience for applications where conventional mass spectrometers are not suitable. However, a series of miniaturization issues show up in small mass spectrometers, specifically mass analyzers, that need to be thoroughly addressed before further miniaturization. The work in this dissertation focuses on miniaturization issues of ion trap mass analyzers. Space-charge is one of the major issues in small ion traps affecting their analytical performance. It limits ion trapping capacity when ion-ion repulsion causes spreading of a packet of ions. Simulation studies on the relationship between different trap dimensions and trapping capacity was done on a geometry-optimized cylindrical …
Mirna Expression Changes In Arsenic-Induced Skin Cancer In Vitro And In Vivo., Laila Al-Eryani
Mirna Expression Changes In Arsenic-Induced Skin Cancer In Vitro And In Vivo., Laila Al-Eryani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Arsenic is a naturally prevalent metalloid. Chronic arsenic ingestion through drinking water causes skin cancer. Arsenic-induced cancer mechanisms are not well defined. Epigenetic changes, including microRNA expression changes, might be playing a role. This dissertation investigates the impact of miRNA expression changes in arsenic-induced skin cancer. MiRNA expression was measure and compared using 3 different techniques, RTq-PCR, hybridization arrays and RNA-sequencing. MiRNAs differential expression in skin lesions was phenotype- and stage-related. Immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT) were transformed by chronic low arsenite exposure serving as a model for arsenic-induced skin carcinogenesis. Early changes in miRNAs and target mRNAs contribute to arsenic-induced …

Get Thee To A Nunnery: Unruly Women And Christianity In Medieval Europe, Sarah E. Wolfe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will argue that the Beowulf Manuscript, which includes the poem Judith, Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum, and the Old-Norse-Icelandic Laxdæla saga highlight and examine the tension between the female pagan characters and their Christian authors. These texts also demonstrate that Queenship grew fragile after the spread of Christianity, and women’s power waned in the shift between pre-Christian and Christian Europe.

Does Machiavelli’S The Prince Have Relevant Lessons For Modern High-Tech Managers And Leaders?, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
When we think of Machiavellian conduct in technology companies, we think of cut-throat, cunning, behaviour. Cut-throat competition in technological innovations can be the barrier to market entry (Lee, 2014). The lean philosophy is that managers and leaders are to strive for the efficient and effective use of resources in order to overcome this barrier and gain competitive advantage. In order for there to be cut throats, there have to be cut-throat technology innovation leaders and managers. What the lean philosophy lacks is guidance on how to achieve an efficient and effective use of resources in a cut-throat competitive environment. The …
Products Of Circumstance: Eighteenth-Century Runaway Indentured Servant Advertisements In A Changing Atlantic World, Amanda Page Mcgee
Products Of Circumstance: Eighteenth-Century Runaway Indentured Servant Advertisements In A Changing Atlantic World, Amanda Page Mcgee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although indentured servitude remained a viable source of labor in colonial America and eighteenth-century England, newspaper advertisements demonstrated the transformations of the perceptions associated with indentured servants in the midst of a changing Atlantic World. Not only were indentured servants perceived as a type of commodity in the rising consumerist culture of the eighteenth century; but, the perceptions of these individuals – reflected in runaway newspaper advertisements – changed depending upon the political, social, and economic circumstances in which they existed. The volatile nature of colonial life combined with the social, economic, and political implications of the changing Atlantic World, …

This portfolio seeks to provide both a multidimensional analysis of war and a means of instructing students to appreciate its significance as a driving force of history using three different components.
The syllabus project provides a long-term view of how the various wars and conflicts came to be and progressed in Western Civilization in the modern era.
The chapter-length paper shows the ravaging effects that war and conflict can have on a physical landscape and the environment in which the conflict takes …
For King And Country: Reconsidering The Great War Soldier In Britain, 1914-1945, Nicholas John Schaefer
For King And Country: Reconsidering The Great War Soldier In Britain, 1914-1945, Nicholas John Schaefer
Master's Theses
In the postwar period historians argued that the horrors of the First World War created an irreparable disconnect between soldiers’ pre and postwar lives. Scholars led by Paul Fussell and Eric Leed presented the Great War as a futile waste of life for a meaningless cause. This historiography argues that the generation which survived the Western Front returned to Britain as jaded shells of their former selves unable to relate to their old lives and families. Bitterness and apathy replaced belief in cause and country. In contrast, recent historiography asserts that British soldiers maintained belief in their country’s cause and …

Sympathy For The Devils: An Analysis Of The Villain Archetype Since The Nineteenth Century, Michel Martin Del Campo
Sympathy For The Devils: An Analysis Of The Villain Archetype Since The Nineteenth Century, Michel Martin Del Campo
Theses and Dissertations
The portrayal of villains has changed dramatically since the late nineteenth century. Modern villains are not necessarily punished, and they are presented as relatable or at the very least sympathetic. An analysis of the major events that shook the Western World in the last century reveals a pattern that links the classical style villain to the modern anti-villain via sociological and cultural changes. The Victorian period showed the West that the British Empire was not eternal and could be threatened. Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula represented these fears and forced the Victorians to reexamine everything from their belief in …

Mencipta Dengan Menghancurkan: Signifikasi Semiotis Kekerasan Dan Reproduksi Identitas Sosial, Geger Riyanto
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
In this article, I want to show the semiotic signification of violence which made its representation profoundly essential in cultural life. My argument is we cannot fully comprehend the social nature of violence provided we view it merely as an act to satisfy the desire to harm the other or to seize a contested scarce resource. As it gave off the impression of negating the others, violence, whatever its motive, tend to be interpreted as the sign of one’s commitment toward his/her group while considerably strengthening the group’ sense of identity. It is this semiotic signification of violence, I argue, …

Blood Antiquities: Preserving Syria’S Heritage, Claire Stephens
Blood Antiquities: Preserving Syria’S Heritage, Claire Stephens
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The recent large-scale looting of archaeological sites across Syria at the hands of ISIS has brought the devastating effects of the illegal international antiquities market into stark relief. Not only are these illicit excavations irreparably destroying human history, they also enable ISIS to sell Syria’s cultural property to fund their jihad. This note examines the international and domestic laws that regulate this illicit antiquities trade. This note further identifies that, while these laws provide a meaningful legal framework, their ineffective implementation prevents them from effectively regulating the illicit antiquities market. Without effective market regulation, buyers in art market countries will …
