Development Of Gene Silencing Technique For Crop Protection Against Soil-Borne Fungal Disease, Guo Huishan, Gao Feng, Zhao Jianhua, Zhang Bosen
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Crop disease caused by soil-borne fungal pathogens is one of the major threatens to agriculture nowadays. Due to the lack of efficient control method, it is becoming a key factor to restrict sustainable development of agricultural production in China. Gene silencing (or RNA silencing, RNAi) is an important pathway in eukaryotes that regulates gene expression based on sequence homology. Gene silencingbased technology has been widely used as a new strategy for plant protection. In this review, we summarized occurrence and general prevention method of crop disease caused by soil-borne fungi, and introduced recent advances and applications of RNA silencing in …

The Conduct Of Hostilities And International Humanitarian Law: Challenges Of 21st Century Warfare, International Law Association Study Group On The Conduct Of Hostilities In The 21st Century
International Law Studies
The International Law Association Study Group on the Conduct of Hostilities in the 21st Century was established in 2011 and held its first meeting in 2012. The Study Group has explored numerous issues arising from the relationship between international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law in the conduct of military operations, technological challenges posed by new weapons systems, and the basic principles of IHL in the conduct of hostilities. In 2015, the Study Group established three working groups focusing on core issues within IHL in relation to the conduct of hostilities in modern warfare. These working group topics …
Development Of An In-Situ Passive Sampling Device For Munitions Compounds And Sulfate, Joseph K Warren
Development Of An In-Situ Passive Sampling Device For Munitions Compounds And Sulfate, Joseph K Warren
Master's Theses
Passive sampling is a novel method of analyte concentration from the environment that strives to bring greater ease to field sampling regimes than traditional liquid-solid phase extractions (SPE). It is easier to deploy than a Niskin bottle or CTD rosette, and easier to recover than hoisting up dozens of liters of water. Passive sampling also offers the opportunity for wider exploratory studies, as compounds can be selectively extracted back in lab, rather than having to select a particular phase SPE and follow phase-specific elution methods. In this study, Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymer (EVA) was used as a marine sorption and …
Facilitating The Transition From Military Instructor To Academic Educator: Cognitive Apprenticeship In Teacher Induction At The United States Air Force Academy, Thomas T. Swaim
The Qualitative Report
This article examines teacher induction in the military undergraduate education context. The U.S. Air Force Academy relies on approximately 520 military and civilian instructors to educate nearly 4000 future military officers each year. These educators must be highly skilled and unquestionably capable in their abilities to teach these future leaders. Many of these instructors derive from highly technical active duty operational career fields (such as pilot, missile operator, etc.). This article reveals how Collins’, Brown’s, and Newman’s (1989) theory of cognitive apprenticeship is manifested within teacher induction experiences at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Using a qualitative multiple-case study approach, …

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION“The Solid & the Shifting”: Evolutionary Form, Darwinian Time, and the Greek Ideal in the Early Works of Virginia WoolfByJoseph KreutzigerDoctor of Philosophy in English and American LiteratureWashington University in St. Louis, 2017Professors Melanie Micir, Robert Milder, Steven Meyer, Vincent Sherry, Zoe Stamatopoulou_____________________________________________________________________ “Now is life very solid or very shifting?” Virginia Woolf asks in her diary of 1931, a question she claims haunts her in its contradictions. This dynamism between the solid and the shifting aspects of life and temporality is fundamental to an analysis of Woolf’s writing process. It resonates throughout the narratives of her …
Avoidance Responses Of Minke Whales To 1–4 Khz Naval Sonar, Petter H. Kvadsheim, Stacy L. Deruiter, Lise D. Sivle, Jeremy A. Goldbogen
Avoidance Responses Of Minke Whales To 1–4 Khz Naval Sonar, Petter H. Kvadsheim, Stacy L. Deruiter, Lise D. Sivle, Jeremy A. Goldbogen
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Minke whales are difficult to study and little information exists regarding their responses to anthropogenic sound. This study pools data from behavioural response studies off California and Norway. Data are derived from four tagged animals, of which one from each location was exposed to naval sonar signals. Statistical analyses were conducted using Mahalanobis distance to compare overall changes in parameters summarising dive behaviour, avoidance behaviour, and potential energetic costs of disturbance. Our quantitative analysis showed that both animals initiated avoidance behaviour, but responses were not associated with unusual dive behaviour. In one exposed animal the avoidance of the sonar source …
Robust Odorant Recognition In Biological And Artificial Olfaction, Nalin Katta
Robust Odorant Recognition In Biological And Artificial Olfaction, Nalin Katta
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Accurate detection and identification of gases pose a number of challenges for chemical sensory systems. The stimulus space is enormous; volatile compounds vary in size, charge, functional groups, and isomerization among others. Furthermore, variability arises from intrinsic (poisoning of the sensors or degradation due to aging) and extrinsic (environmental: humidity, temperature, flow patterns) sources. Nonetheless, biological olfactory systems have been refined over time to overcome these challenges. The main objective of this work is to understand how the biological olfactory system deals with these challenges, and translate them to artificial olfaction to achieve comparable capabilities. In particular, this thesis focuses …
Corpus Linguistics As A Tool In Legal Interpretation, Lawrence M. Solan, Tammy Gales
Corpus Linguistics As A Tool In Legal Interpretation, Lawrence M. Solan, Tammy Gales
BYU Law Review
In this paper, we set out to explore conditions in which the use of large linguistic corpora can be optimally employed by judges and others tasked with construing authoritative legal documents. Linguistic corpora, sometimes containing billions of words, are a source of information about the distribution of language usage. Thus, corpora and the tools for using them are most likely to assist in addressing legal issues when the law considers the distribution of language usage to be legally relevant. As Thomas R. Lee and Stephen C. Mouritsen have so ably demonstrated in earlier work, corpus analysis is especially helpful when …
Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke
Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
In human-performance-driven fields such as the social and behavioral sciences and education, there is a particular risk for a disconnect between current research and applied practice. Often, new findings require policy changes and workforce re-education before being applied in a meaningful way. Therefore, a continuous need for practitioner professional development and continuation training exists to ensure informed practices. This presentation is motivated by these needs and aims to help flight training professionals to make informed decisions when designing and conducting flight training events. Based on a conceptual framework of cognitive and behavioral theories in learning, a variety of common training …

Context At The International Criminal Court, Hassan Ahmad
Context At The International Criminal Court, Hassan Ahmad
Pace International Law Review
In this article, I propose a contextual approach to ICC jurisdiction normatively to be adopted by the Court’s Office of the Prosecutor and Pre-Trial Chamber in investigating and eventually prosecuting crimes under the Rome Statute. Under this contextual approach, I contend that both the Prosecutor and Pre-Trial Chamber are able to consider evidence outside the traditional notions of territorial and temporal jurisdiction to conceptualize a conflict in its entirety. The totality of cross-border and inter-temporal evidence should be considered when deciding whether to investigate attacks that the Prosecutor has a reasonable basis to believe fall within the Court’s jurisdiction. Procedurally, …

Bayesian Network Analysis For Diagnostics And Prognostics Of Engineering Systems, Marc D. Banghart
Bayesian Network Analysis For Diagnostics And Prognostics Of Engineering Systems, Marc D. Banghart
Theses and Dissertations
Bayesian networks have been applied to many different domains to perform prognostics, reduce risk and ultimately improve decision making. However, these methods have not been applied to military field and human performance data sets in an industrial environment. Methods frequently rely on a clear understanding of causal connections leading to an undesirable event and detailed understanding of the system behavior. Methods may also require large amount of analyst teams and domain experts, coupled with manual data cleansing and classification. The research performed utilized machine learning algorithms (such as Bayesian networks) and two existing data sets. The primary objective of the …

Containerizing Containment: The Automation And Globalization Of The National Security Waterfront, 1945-1997, John Douglas Forrest
Theses and Dissertations
After the introduction of the cargo container and related automation systems in the late 1950s, the numbers of maritime laborers who worked along the piers and aboard ship along American waterways steadily declined. In the late 1950s, tens of thousands of longshoremen and merchant mariners plied their respective trades, but the process of “containerization” reduced their numbers by nearly 70 percent by the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Department of Defense (DoD) similarly containerized and automated its cargo handling during this era. The introduction of the container also had negative consequences for defense maritime policy. Containerization of the National …
A Curvelet Prescreener For Detection Of Explosive Hazards In Handheld Ground-Penetrating, Julie White
A Curvelet Prescreener For Detection Of Explosive Hazards In Handheld Ground-Penetrating, Julie White
Theses and Dissertations
Explosive hazards, above and below ground, are a serious threat to civilians and soldiers. In an attempt to mitigate these threats, different forms of explosive hazard detection (EHD) exist; e.g, multi-sensor hand-held platforms, downward looking and forward looking vehicle mounted platforms, etc. Robust detection of these threats resides in the processing and fusion of different data from multiple sensing modalities, e.g., radar, infrared, electromagnetic induction (EMI), etc. The focus of this thesis is on the implementation of two new algorithms to form a new energy-based prescreener in hand-held ground penetrating radar (GPR). First, B-scan signal data is curvelet filtered using …

In this study, 6 research questions were addressed. The first question asked whether a statistically significant relationship exists between teachers’ experience …
Testing The Life History Approach: Assessing Cultural Bias In Archaeological Mussel Shell Assemblages In The Tombigbee River Drainage, Sarah Kate Mckinney
Testing The Life History Approach: Assessing Cultural Bias In Archaeological Mussel Shell Assemblages In The Tombigbee River Drainage, Sarah Kate Mckinney
Theses and Dissertations
Zooarchaeological mussel shell assemblages can be affected by an array of biases, one of which is cultural bias. Cultural biases may be exhibited in the transport of mussels from nonlocal mussel beds, and/or in preferential taste. There are a few methods used to help determine if cultural biases are at play (e.g., nestedness and detrended correspondence analysis). This thesis aims to test a new method, the life history approach, to determine if it is a viable method for assessing cultural bias in prehistoric mussel assemblages from the Tombigbee River drainage. Shell assemblages from the drainage previously have been demonstrated to …

Testing And Validating Deployment Profiles Of The Canisterized Satellite Dispenser (Csd), Stephen Tullino, Eric Swenson
Testing And Validating Deployment Profiles Of The Canisterized Satellite Dispenser (Csd), Stephen Tullino, Eric Swenson
Small Satellite Conference
Planetary Systems Corporation (PSC) developed the Canisterized Satellite Dispenser (CSD) to provide a more secure and predictable deployment system for CubeSats of different sizes. The CSD is designed to provide predictable and consistent payload deployment performance. Though the CSD has proven its safety and reliability, there is still not enough data required to predict accurately CSD linear and angular deployment rates. In the first phase of research, various computer models were developed and tuned in order to compare their predictions with respect to experimental in-lab deployments, and to understand better the deployment dynamics and the variables that affect performance. The …

Proxy Conflict Turned Civil Crisis: Understanding Syrian Political Movements To United States Foreign Policy, Katherine Barymow
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The Syrian crisis in terms of its crimes against humanity has surpassed most politicians’ wildest expectations: it seems that with every passing news cycle the west is informed of new atrocities commited against innocent Syrian civilians, in addition to violence perpetrated by Syrian Islamists themselves against westerners in ill-advised cries for help. The extent of bloodshed can be both horrifying and mystifying to the average American. How is it possible that the international community allows these crimes to proliferate and self-perpetuate in this modern day-in-age? Hearts sink with every image of a child in dire straights as a result of …

High-Assurance Cyber Space Systems For Small Satellite Mission Integrity, Daria Lane, Enrique Leon, Dexter Solio, Daniel Cunningham, Dmitrie Obukhov, Francisco C. Tacliad
Small Satellite Conference
As the complexity of embedded computing platforms continues to grow, small satellites are increasingly deployed with operating systems having known cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Using common exploit techniques, potential intruders may compromise the capabilities and the integrity of the space mission. Moreover, the prominent use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products in small satellites also increases the probability of attack via widely known vulnerabilities associated with commercially manufactured parts. System developers frequently assume that software and hardware components communicate through specified interfaces and primary data paths, but these assumptions cannot be fully guaranteed. By architecting secure space vehicle and ground control systems with …
