Innumerable Views Of The Sunshine State: Locating Florida In The Literature Of The Everglades And Central Florida, Chelsea M. Torregrosa Jan 2018

Innumerable Views Of The Sunshine State: Locating Florida In The Literature Of The Everglades And Central Florida, Chelsea M. Torregrosa

Theses & ETDs

Florida literature is not merely a part of Southern literature, but rather its own category of writing. Its prose and poetry cannot be defined except as the sum of its parts, so this thesis explores two regions of Florida: the Everglades and Central Florida. The Everglades chapter examines Karen Russell’s Swamplandia!, Peter Matthiessen’s Shadow Country, and Campbell McGrath’s poems “A City in the Clouds” and “The Everglades.” It identifies magic, Southern influence and outlaw culture, and conservation of land as prominent themes in Everglades literature. In the Central Florida chapter, it analyzes Susan Lilley’s poem “Fall,” Nathan Holic’s 15 Views …

Women At War In The Borderlands Of The Early American Northeast, Debra Meyers Jan 2018

Women At War In The Borderlands Of The Early American Northeast, Debra Meyers

Civil War Book Review

Women at War in the Borderlands, describes the numerous ways in which women assumed wartime roles across the northeast borderlands during the early modern period in the New World. She asks us to embrace the idea of more fluid gender roles for women in a world in which European and Native American women actively participated in wars that helped shape politics, social structures, and ideologies.

Caring For Muslim Ministry Workers In North America, Mike Urton Jan 2018

Caring For Muslim Ministry Workers In North America, Mike Urton

Great Commission Research Journal

Numerous studies have been conducted on the causes of undue stress among missionaries serving overseas. This article represents the first such study conducted among missionaries working domestically among diaspora people groups. The focus is on a particular group of diaspora missionaries in North America, namely those serving among Muslims. It includes a survey of missionaries in this context who were asked to list their top stressors in ministry. The results are organized into relevant categories, along with suggested coping methods for these stressors. It concludes by demonstrating how caring for these missionaries will assist the broader Christian community in Muslim …

Nuclear Stability With Russia And North Korea Workshop Write-Up, Russia Maritime Studies Institute

RMSI Research

On January 12th, the college convened a group of nuclear stability and regional experts in Newport, Rhode Island for an unclassified discussion of the incentives U.S. adversaries might have for nuclear first use. Our aim was to identify the most probable and most dangerous pathways as well as the impetus for nuclear use. Based on these pathways, we generated a series of policy recommendations for the U.S. national security community and the U.S. Navy.

Substitutes In Hell: Schemes Of Atonement In The Ezra Apocalypses, Meghan Henning Jan 2018

Substitutes In Hell: Schemes Of Atonement In The Ezra Apocalypses, Meghan Henning

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

This book is one of the first modern collections of studies on important aspects of the Ezra figure that combines both Jewish and Christian traditions. The volume opens with a study of Ezra in rabbinic literature and continues with four chapters on 4 Ezra, discussing its dimensions of time, future agents and visionary practices as well as reminiscences of 4 Ezra in the Armenian Script of the Lord's Infancy. The following chapters study the relationship of 4, 5 and 6 Ezra, the nature of 5 Ezra and dissimulation strategies in 6 Ezra. The last chapters concentrate on the important discovery …

Sanctions And The Blurred Boundaries Of International Economic Law, Perry Bechky Jan 2018

Sanctions And The Blurred Boundaries Of International Economic Law, Perry Bechky

Faculty Articles

Economic sanctions are often said to occupy a middle space between communiqués and combat. As this description makes clear, sanctions are a political tool – but a political tool that operates through economic regulation. They are simultaneously economic and political. Their dual nature seems to place sanctions in a twilight zone, neither truly in nor out of the academic discipline of international economic law (“IEL”). Sanctions tend to be marginalized in IEL scholarship, generally taking little space in the IEL literature and at the podiums of IEL conferences and courses. While economic sanctions loom large today in headline news and …

A "Dry" Country: The Failure Of The Eighteenth Amendment, William Gay Jan 2018

A "Dry" Country: The Failure Of The Eighteenth Amendment, William Gay

A with Honors Projects

Spawned from years of social activism from the Temperance Movement, mostly on the part of women’s rights and religious groups, Prohibition was created as a response to combat America’s love of “devil rum” and other intoxicating spirits that seemed to plague the minds and livers of America’s men. While pure in its intentions of stemming alcoholism and domestic abuse, Prohibition morphed into a lawmaking catastrophe that laid the foundation of organized crime all across the country and demoted many citizens to the status of a criminal--yet after the fact proved to be what many believe to be a necessary growing …

Pedagogical Contraband: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Student Engagement During Simulations, Stephen Austin Henderson Jan 2018

Pedagogical Contraband: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Student Engagement During Simulations, Stephen Austin Henderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of students who are taught using simulations in survey history courses. Although simulations have been studied in a variety of domains, few studies have examined the use of simulations to teach history. Further, most of the previous research on simulations has been quantitative in nature, and one goal of the proposed study is to go into greater depth than typically allowed for by quantitative methodologies and examine the lived experiences of students in a college-level history class who are participating in simulations. Results suggest that the five phases of …

Liberals Vs Romantics: Challenges Of An Emerging Corporate International Criminal Law, Carsten Stahn Jan 2018

Liberals Vs Romantics: Challenges Of An Emerging Corporate International Criminal Law, Carsten Stahn

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

Holding bystanders and corporate agents accountable for international crimes is often at the periphery of international criminal justice. Based on its liberal foundations, international criminal law has traditionally been strongly centered on individual agency. In the industrialist cases after World War II, individual criminal responsibility was used to demonstrate and sanction corporate involvement in crime. Ideas of corporate criminal responsibility have been voiced in the post-war era and in the context of the negotiations of the Statute. In recent years, they have witnessed a renaissance in several contexts: the jurisprudence of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the Malabo Protocol of …

Physicochemical, Spectroscopic Properties, And Diffusion Mechanisms Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules In Mof-74-Mg/Zn: A Quantum Chemical Investigation, Gemechis Degaga Jan 2018

Physicochemical, Spectroscopic Properties, And Diffusion Mechanisms Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules In Mof-74-Mg/Zn: A Quantum Chemical Investigation, Gemechis Degaga

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In petroleum refining industries, the fracturing process allows for the cracking of long-chain hydrocarbons into a mixture of small olefin and paraffin molecules that are then separated via the energetically and monetarily demanding cryogenic distillation process. In an attempt to mitigate both energetic and capital consumptions, selective sorption of light hydrocarbons by tunable sorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), appears to be the most promising alternative for a more efficient gas separation process. MOFs are novel porous materials assembled from inorganic bricks connected by organic linkers. From a crystal engineering stand point, MOFs are advantageous in creating a range …

Choreographing Conflict: Inspiring Change Through Visual And Physical Representations, Rachel Nayer Jan 2018

Choreographing Conflict: Inspiring Change Through Visual And Physical Representations, Rachel Nayer

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines how art can support and stimulate personal and social change. It addresses the natural and ever-present existence of conflict and analyzes how using the body as a tool for communication can viscerally represent themes of disagreement and resolution. The work of Israeli choreographers Yasmeen Godder and Hillel Kogan are analyzed in a case study to explore different methods of choreographing conflict. Both works successfully, yet contrastingly, demonstrate how the body adds power and emotion to an idea. Parallel to the research component of this thesis is the original choreographed work, Ecotones. The creative method behind Ecotones …

Fake News: Latinos, Representacion, Ciudadanizo Y Trump, Grace Thieme

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis uses in-depth analysis of historical Los Angeles Times articles to trace the changing representations of the Latino community in the media. Focusing on themes of patriotism and citizenship, this thesis draws out the subtleties of syntax and semantics that silently influence public opinion. The Zoot Suit Riots and the Chicano Moratorium serve as the main historical backdrop, leading to a concluding exploration of Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric surrounding immigration and the Latino community.

Defining 'Good': Exploring The Meaning Of Politics And Its Relation To The Personal, Tarai Zemba Jan 2018

Defining 'Good': Exploring The Meaning Of Politics And Its Relation To The Personal, Tarai Zemba

Scripps Senior Theses

The US is currently experiencing a confusing and problematic shift in politics under Donald Trump, who continues to disrupt the status quo of American democracy. Such a reality begs us to ask the question of what politics means, and what it should mean for the future. Throughout history, many philosophers and theorists, such as Thomas Hobbes and Max Weber, have identified the meaning of politics as obedience and domination over others. However, such an interpretation is incredibly dangerous, closely aligning with the historical values of authoritarian and totalitarian governments.

Political theorist Hannah Arendt provides a solution to this dilemma, exposing …

An Historical Analysis Of Women’S Emergence Into Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership: Eastern Michigan University, A Case Study, Cheyenne Luzynski Jan 2018

An Historical Analysis Of Women’S Emergence Into Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership: Eastern Michigan University, A Case Study, Cheyenne Luzynski

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The implementation of Title IX has increased women’s participation rates in intercollegiate athletics tenfold, yet women’s representation in athletic leadership remains marginal compared to men. As such, the purpose of this study was to understand the social construction of gender as it relates to intercollegiate athletic leadership at Eastern Michigan University. The study explored the history of sporting activities as a mechanism to shape and perpetuate masculine and feminine culture. These values (i.e, competitiveness and cooperativeness) were institutionalized in higher education as sex-segregated physical education and athletic functions. This historical case study applied organizational and institutional theory analyzing the institutional, …

Licensing & Law Who Owns An Avatar?, Tyler T. Ochoa, Jaime Banks Jan 2018

Licensing & Law Who Owns An Avatar?, Tyler T. Ochoa, Jaime Banks

Faculty Publications

Both players and game developers have great influence over how avatars—via their assembled components— manifest in digital game play. Developers craft their foundational platforms and draw on those infrastructures to craft dynamic code that enables movements, appearances, and abilities. But those potentials call into question whether avatars are avatars until they are played—players click avatars into being, customize their bodies and attire, drive their actions and interactions, and sometimes bring them outside the game world through physical representations. So, given avatars’ joint reliance on developers and players, and given legal frameworks such as copyright law, who really “owns” a video …

The Shadow In The Light: The Dark Romanticism Of Francisco De Goya, Elizabeth Burns-Dans Jan 2018

The Shadow In The Light: The Dark Romanticism Of Francisco De Goya, Elizabeth Burns-Dans

Theses

The work of Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) is impressive both in its skill, and in its scope; but perhaps most strikingly in its diversity. This diversity has cultivated a crisis-narrative of Goya’s life; his famed artistic darkness only appeared following significant ‘crisis moments’ in his life. This research contends with this narrative by analysing a collection of Goya’s earlier, lesser-known artworks, the Tapestry Cartoons. The cartoons provide a powerful comparison to the collections of his later years, such as the Black Paintings (1819–23) and the Disasters of War (1810–20). Framing this analysis is the influence of Dark Romanticism, which was …

International Cybertorts: Expanding State Accountability In Cyberspace, Rebecca Crootof Jan 2018

International Cybertorts: Expanding State Accountability In Cyberspace, Rebecca Crootof

Law Faculty Publications

States are not being held accountable for the vast majority of their harmful cyberoperations, largely because classifications created in physical space do not map well onto the cyber domain. Most injurious and invasive cyberoperations are not cybercrimes and do not constitute cyberwarfare, nor are states extending existing definitions of wrongful acts permitting countermeasures to cyberoperations (possibly to avoid creating precedent restricting their own activities). Absent an appropriate label, victim states have few effective and nonescalatory responsive options, and the harms associated with these incidents lie where they fall.

This Article draws on tort law and international law principles to construct …

Veterans' Stories Of Substance Use, Recovery, And Moral Injury : An Exploratory Study, Chelsea Faria Jan 2018

Veterans' Stories Of Substance Use, Recovery, And Moral Injury : An Exploratory Study, Chelsea Faria

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This explorative/descriptive study investigates veterans’ stories of substance use/misuse, recovery, and moral injury. 12 male veterans participated in semi-structured interviews and answered questions about how their motivations for substance use/misuse and recovery changed prior to, during, and after their military service. Participants were also asked if they experienced moral injury while in the military, and if this precipitated or motivated substance use/misuse. The purpose of this study was to determine how the military impacts a veteran’s substance use/misuse and recovery. Qualitative research on moral injury is minimal, and this study aimed to address that gap in the literature. The study …

Critical Peace Pedagogies At The American Center For Civil And Human Rights And The Canadian Museum For Human Rights: A Comparative Case Study, Ion Vlad Jan 2018

Critical Peace Pedagogies At The American Center For Civil And Human Rights And The Canadian Museum For Human Rights: A Comparative Case Study, Ion Vlad

Doctoral Dissertations

The struggle for racial equity in the United States and Canada is ongoing. Troubled historical legacies in both countries have present-day implications. African Americans and Indigenous Canadians are still two of the most marginalized populations from the standpoint of socioeconomics and political representation (Giroux, 2013; Vickers, 2012). In order to redress these problems, human rights and peace education have to pose structural questions and expose systemic unbalances. In the recent past, neoliberalism has had a major influence on the organization and content of American and Canadian formal education, obscuring some of these structural questions (Ravitch, 2013). In this context, human …

Voices From The Middle: Examining The Lived Schooling Experiences Of Black Males In A Predominantly White Middle School, Donham Douglas Kauffman, Jr. Jan 2018

Voices From The Middle: Examining The Lived Schooling Experiences Of Black Males In A Predominantly White Middle School, Donham Douglas Kauffman, Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Being labelled as qualifying for special assistance simply by being a Black male is common, as with five Black males at my professional educational institution. This study elicits the voices of these Black males in such areas as their personal perception of academic achievement, school improvement needs, and staff misunderstandings of Black males. Because this research elicits voices of Black males missing from the current research literature (Howard, 2014), the participant researcher decided to use these ethnographic accounts to glimpse into the minds and schooling experiences of these students. This study should advance the research literature on Black male students …

Twelfth Grade Students’ Perceptions Of Linked Learning Pathways, Scott Weimer Jan 2018

Twelfth Grade Students’ Perceptions Of Linked Learning Pathways, Scott Weimer

Theses and Dissertations

During the era of standardized testing in California, Central High School District (CHSD- pseudonym) had created a single course of study that all students were expected to follow to maximize results on state exams. This single course of study was not relevant to a large majority of the students who graduated from the district and they were not prepared for life after graduation. The new accountability system has allowed CHSD to expand the course of study that is being offered. The district has several programs that follow the Linked Learning model which uses project based learning to pair core academic …

Exhibition: Impossible Landscapes 不可能的仙山, Yi Bing (Bing-Yi Huang) 黄冰逸

Zhou Documents

There are two documents: the Exhibition checklist and a scholarly essay written by Zhang Yuxing. The eassy examines artist's philosophy of All Things (万物) through three conceptual threads: Ruins-View — the use of ink to render nature as ruin rather than landscape, encompassing large-scale environmental works such as the Emei Waterfall series; Transformation of Form — an exploration of the transformation between wave, sound, and matter, corresponding to the Wave Archaeology series; and World-Making — the invention of an imagined dynasty known as the "Lotus Dynasty" through handscrolls, in which poetry replaces warfare as the power. The essay also traces …

R2h And The Prospects For Peace: An Essay On Sovereign Responsibilities, David Luban Jan 2018

R2h And The Prospects For Peace: An Essay On Sovereign Responsibilities, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay examines novel threats to peace – social and political threats as well as military and technological. It worries that familiar conceptions of state sovereignty cannot sustain a legal order capable of meeting those threats, not even if we understand sovereignty as responsibility to protect human rights. The essay tentatively proposes that recent efforts to reformulate state sovereignty as responsibility to humanity – ‘R2H’ for short – offer a better hope. Under this reformulation, states must take into account the interests of those outside their sovereign territory as well as those of the of their own people – in …
