Enforcing A Prohibition On International Espionage, Jared Beim Jan 2018

Enforcing A Prohibition On International Espionage, Jared Beim

Chicago Journal of International Law

Peacetime espionage is an incredibly important and common occurrence in modern international relations, yet its legal status is far from clear. This Comment explores the practice’s legal background, as well as the arguments for and against its legality. While there can be many benefits to peacetime espionage, and while few countries have “clean hands,” it seems unworkable to overcome the presupposition that most espionage is an “intervention” as defined by the ICJ in Nicaragua v. U.S., even if the prohibition on espionage is often unenforced. With the conclusion that most peacetime espionage is likely illegal under international law, this Comment …

Nuwc Universal Undersea Gripper, Matthew Delia, Austin Cordova, Michael Ferreira, William Karabots Jan 2018

Nuwc Universal Undersea Gripper, Matthew Delia, Austin Cordova, Michael Ferreira, William Karabots

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

The main objective of the "Let it Grip" 2017-2018 NUWC Universal Undersea Gripper project was to design an effective and efficient individual gripper capable of securing a pay- load of various sizes, shapes, and orientations. This an important and relevant project being that the current way of securing payloads throughout the duration of a mission involves pre-installed molds that can only hold a payload of a specific size and shape. Though there were many ways to improve upon the current payload-carrying apparatus, the team decided to focus on finding the optimal shape and material of a potential universal gripper.

After …

Coin Doctrine For The 21st Century Gwot: Improvements For Battling Al Qaeda In The Western Sahel, Caleb Archuleta Jan 2018

Coin Doctrine For The 21st Century Gwot: Improvements For Battling Al Qaeda In The Western Sahel, Caleb Archuleta

Honors Program Theses

This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach in examining the United States role in the conflict in Mali and Niger. As a strategic locale in a region that is plagued with conflict, the U.S. is faced with increasing involvement across Africa, specifically the Western Sahel. With an Al Qaeda that continues to shift, change, and grow, the U.S. is faced with a War on Terror that is increasingly difficult to contain or succeed in. In an effort to shift the narrative to one from counterterrorism to one of counterinsurgency, this paper takes an in depth look at the political, geographical, sociocultural, …

Playing To An Audience: A Review Of Revelatory Events, Kevin Christensen Jan 2018

Playing To An Audience: A Review Of Revelatory Events, Kevin Christensen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Ann Taves’s book offers a comparative look at the origins of three groups, among them Mormonism. While she does not address the issue of competing explanations by each group about their origins or how to best navigate among them in terms that are not self-referential, that crucial circumstance is modeled by Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. So I, too, have a pattern that applies to my arguments just as much it does to those offered by Professor Taves. Where her book attempts to solve the puzzle of Joseph Smith, my review offers a test of her rules …

Terrorist Celebrity: Online Personal Branding And Jihadist Recruitment And Planning, Ari Weil Jan 2018

Terrorist Celebrity: Online Personal Branding And Jihadist Recruitment And Planning, Ari Weil

Pomona Senior Theses

Shifts in culture and technology have changed the manifestation of celebrity in modern society, culminating in the practice of internet microcelebrity, where one views followers as fans, produces content consistent with a personal brand, and engages in strategic interaction with devotees. This thesis examines how those effects have also changed how terrorists present themselves and operationalize celebrity status. An original typology of terrorist celebrity is presented: traditional, martyr, and internet micro-celebrity. Two in-depth case studies of terrorist micro-celebrities are analyzed: Anwar al-Awlaki of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Junaid Hussain of the Islamic State. The case studies are …

Identity Dissonance And Power Sharing: Institutional Mechanisms For Mitigating Counter-State Violence, Matthew Kirchman Jan 2018

Identity Dissonance And Power Sharing: Institutional Mechanisms For Mitigating Counter-State Violence, Matthew Kirchman

Theses & ETDs

One of the most significant trends in modern political history is the reduced prevalence of traditional interstate wars and concurrent spike in the number and intensity of non-international armed conflicts (NIACs). In particular, NIACs based in a contestation of identity between the state and its constituent national communities pose an important question to academics and policymakers: how can top-down institutional reforms reconcile group differences in order to forge a stronger, more unified state identity and reduce the potential for violent conflict? This paper posits that differences in the underlying causes – termed “proximate identity crises” – of such conflicts influence …

Novel Antibiotic Design: Synthesis And Optimization Of N-Heterocyclic Oxazolidinones, David J. Bruch Jan 2018

Novel Antibiotic Design: Synthesis And Optimization Of N-Heterocyclic Oxazolidinones, David J. Bruch

Theses & ETDs

Over the past few decades there have been very few breakthrough discoveries in the field of antibiotics. Designing an effective drug is not a simple task, and requires a long and grueling selection and optimization process. The analogue approach is a very effective method in drug design and was applied to the N-aryl-oxazolidinone moiety in an effort to explore the structure activity relationship among this series. Dr. Tucker proposed a heterocyclic aromatic species as a substituent for placement at the N-aryl site of the oxazolidinone moiety. Specifically, we hoped to replace the N-phenyl “B-ring” in the active linezolid oxazolidinone core …

The War Isn’T Over: The Decolonial Praxis Of Laying Bare Environmental Violence In The #Nodapl Movement, Sadé Holmes Jan 2018

The War Isn’T Over: The Decolonial Praxis Of Laying Bare Environmental Violence In The #Nodapl Movement, Sadé Holmes

Theses & ETDs

Modern/colonial states and corporate interests perpetually engage in industrial practices that cause environmental violence ( NYSHN and WEA 2014 ), and th is is a continuation of the logics of modernity/coloniality that developed at the onset of settler colonialism in the Americas (Mignolo 2000; Quijano 1991). Decolonial art plays an integral role in the formation of responses to modernity/coloniality (Maldonado-Torres 2002) and environmental violence, which can be clearly seen within the #NODAPL movement (Martineau and Ritskes 2014). This thesis engages in a qualitative content analysis of creative writings of contemporary Indigenous women artists in a #NODAPL-inspired issue of the Apogee …

Facing The Future: Reading Reproduction Through Science And Speculative Fiction, Rory Sharp Jan 2018

Facing The Future: Reading Reproduction Through Science And Speculative Fiction, Rory Sharp

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationship between biological reproduction and the future in three works of science and speculative fiction, Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men , Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga , and Octavia Butler’s Lilith’s Brood . Each work is shaped by an imaginative change to the operation of reproduction. Applying critical frameworks ranging from Lee Edelman’s No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive to bell hooks’ “Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance” I argue that these narratives reflect contemporary cultural anxieties about who, and what, should be reproduced from one generation to the next. I begin by looking …

El Pulpo Y El Presidente: Las Causas Del Golpe De Estado Guatemalteco De 1954, Blaise Defranco

Theses & ETDs

The Guatemalan coup d’etat of 1954 was widely considered to have a significant impact on both US policy and Guatemalan society; it provoked the decades-long civil war, in which tensions between the Guatemalan armed forces and impoverished rural class finally came to a head. It was also proof of the success of newer, psychological warfare tactics employed by the CIA as a means of interfering with what they perceived to be international threats, and the outcome of the operation PBSUCCESS began a new era of US covert operations. Despite what is known about the operation and its aftermath, many questions …

The Fabric Of War: Wool And Local Land Wars In A Global Context, Madelyn Shaw, Trish Fitzsimons Jan 2018

The Fabric Of War: Wool And Local Land Wars In A Global Context, Madelyn Shaw, Trish Fitzsimons

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During the nineteenth century, exponential growth in sheep pastoralism in Australia and New Zealand, and in less predictable locales such as the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and Rapanui (Easter Island), fueled the alienation of Indigenous peoples from their lands. The sheep and their wool, at the heart of these ‘grass wars,’ fed a global industry that supported another kind of war – the mass, cold climate warfare characterizing the century between the Crimean and Korean wars. Not until the second quarter of the nineteenth century did mechanization and factory organization affect wool production, as assiduous Australasian sheep husbandry bred wool staples …

Smallpox Bioterrorism Preparedness: The Importance Of Technology And Education For Early Detection And Response, D Taylor Jorgenson-Rathke Jan 2018

Smallpox Bioterrorism Preparedness: The Importance Of Technology And Education For Early Detection And Response, D Taylor Jorgenson-Rathke

Theses and Graduate Projects

The use of biological agents as weapons has been prevalent throughout history. Only when the US experienced a bioterrorist attack in 2001 did additional funding begin to invest in preparing for other potential attacks. These initial investments, along with others, have funded preventative measures such as mass surveillance through biosensor technology and the development of preparedness programs such as the Laboratory Response Network and Hospital Preparedness Program. Based on learnings from previous outbreak events, in the event of a bioterrorist attack involving smallpox early detection will be the key to initiating a rapid and effective response. Additionally, further measures need …

The Effect Of Unemployment On Democratic Warfare, Andres Rakower Jan 2018

The Effect Of Unemployment On Democratic Warfare, Andres Rakower

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This study was done to see the effects of a war on the economy and the internal politics of the United States. In selecting the engagement, we would study we agreed the Iraq War would be aided by a large amount of sampling of public opinion that was more nuanced than in previous wars. The Iraq War was a very complicated war, as it was controversial from the beginning and became a political issue while continuing to be a war fought by Americans abroad. Based on the literature, there were many starting effects and assumptions that were accounted for such …

When The Clocks Strike Thirteen: Political Repression In Modern America (1990-2015), Faiza Begani Jan 2018

When The Clocks Strike Thirteen: Political Repression In Modern America (1990-2015), Faiza Begani

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Abounding acts of repression committed in democracies have continued to be overlooked and under-analyzed by many researchers and scholars due to "democratic exceptionalism". As the United States enters yet another consecutive year of declining political satisfaction and freedom. It has become pertinent that as conflict study researchers, scholars, and readers alike that there is a basic understanding of coercion including acts that have been committed within our own countries. Countless scholars have focused conflict study research on underdeveloped or emerging democracies, yet many have overlooked the seamy side of developed ones. This article aims to explain the relationship between the …

Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez Jan 2018

Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Why do women and children join insurgency groups? The subject has been a matter of extensive debate, with experts offering theories of motivation on well-known groups such as the National Liberation Front (FLN) or the Irish Republican Army (IRA). However, there has been a small amount of work comparing two insurgency groups and their participants to one another. This paper addresses the underlying reasons for why women and children join insurgencies, explicitly focusing on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey from their origins to the present. The paper uses interviews from …

Submission Or Subversion: Women With Shaved Hair In Media, Thea Cheuk Jan 2018

Submission Or Subversion: Women With Shaved Hair In Media, Thea Cheuk

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

“It is quite obvious that the shaving of heads fundamentally damages the physical and moral integrity of those people for whom it was intended,” Fabrice Virgili asserts in his book Shorn Women: Gender and Punishment in Liberation France (135). For centuries, hair has been held as a standard of feminine beauty, therefore a lack of it has a long and storied history as well. Records of head shaving as a form of punishment for women can be traced back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. Shaving a woman’s head was a sign of sin and shame, and stripped them of …

Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett Jan 2018

Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett

CMC Senior Theses

Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …

Lang And Law: Analyzing Representations Of Law, Justice, And Violence In The Films Of Fritz Lang, Dante Fresse Jan 2018

Lang And Law: Analyzing Representations Of Law, Justice, And Violence In The Films Of Fritz Lang, Dante Fresse

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the representations of Law, Justice, and Violence in the German and American films of Fritz Lang. Through an overview of legal and social unrest in Germany and courtroom drama, criminal conviction, mob violence, and police corruption in America, Lang challenges the legitimacy of Law and shows how it is subverted by outside forces. At other times, Lang shows Law working in collusion with criminal agencies or against the interests of the public. In doing this, Lang’s films present images of legal decay in the urban sphere, prompted by anxieties which come about through spatial alienation, city structure, …

Destruction, Reconstruction, And Remembrance: Exploring 'Memory' And 'Environment' Through Pennsylvania World War I Memorials In France, Amy Collins Jan 2018

Destruction, Reconstruction, And Remembrance: Exploring 'Memory' And 'Environment' Through Pennsylvania World War I Memorials In France, Amy Collins

Honors Theses

After examining the substantial efforts at land reclamation and environmental mitigation accompanying the State of Pennsylvania’s construction of memorials after World War I in France, I discovered a strong relationship between post-war memorialization and environmental mitigation in the areas in which the environmental consequences of WWI continue to affect humans and wildlife. My research illuminates how cultural impulses to build memorials that acknowledged the vast losses, acts of valor, and victories heavily influenced mitigation of France’s ecologically damaged Western Front. Many of France’s former battlefields, particularly in the devastated area known as the Red Zone, weren’t accessible to visitors before …
