Ukraine At The Crossroad In Post-Communist Europe: Policymaking And The Role Of Foreign Actors, Ryan Barrett
Ukraine At The Crossroad In Post-Communist Europe: Policymaking And The Role Of Foreign Actors, Ryan Barrett
Dissertations
As the mounting protests from Maidan Square in Kyiv led to the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovich, Ukrainians found themselves at an unavoidable fork in the road in their history. For years the country had become a new frontier of Western influence, forcing a decision between tightening economic and cultural ties with Western countries or with Russia. The basic question many Ukrainians now faced included choosing between their Soviet past or a potential liberal democratic future. Furthermore, the Russian takeover of Crimea became the first major invasion of a European country since 1968. This military maneuver stunned the international community …

Co-Creating Spaces Of Critical Hope Through The Use Of A Psychosocial Peace Building Education Course In Higher Education In Protracted Refugee Context: Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, Staci Bokhee Martin
Dissertations and Theses
An unprecedented 65.6 million persons are forcibly displaced (e.g., refugees, asylum-seekers, IDPs). Half are youth. Hope is often the feeling that sustains youth through intolerable conditions. Basic education in protracted areas is seen as a protective factor that nurtures hope and psychosocial wellbeing in the lives of children and youth. This research sought to extend this concept to the higher education in protracted refugee context, where refugees (ages 18-35) were able to co-create spaces of hope that recognized their own agency and their ability to question the status quo while developing critical thinking skills. Based on a theoretical framework of …
Free Speech In Wartime: Sedition Acts During The Presidencies Of John Adams And Woodrow Wilson, Juliana M. Hafner
Free Speech In Wartime: Sedition Acts During The Presidencies Of John Adams And Woodrow Wilson, Juliana M. Hafner
Honors College Theses
This paper analyzes two time eras in which the United States federal government created and passed two sedition acts: in 1798 with President John Adams and in 1918 with President Woodrow Wilson. Both ultimately affected American’s freedom of speech during wartime, as well as during times of peace. This analysis addresses the specific acts themselves, the overall political atmosphere in each time period, including who were considered the country’s “enemies,” in-depth consideration of one court case per era, the government and public reaction to the acts, and the overall impact that both eras had on the development of American Constitutionalism. …

'Not Cruelty But Piety': Circumscribing European Crusading Violence, Susanna A. Throop
'Not Cruelty But Piety': Circumscribing European Crusading Violence, Susanna A. Throop
History Faculty Publications
Was there such a thing as “crusading violence”? Traditionally the crusading movement has been sharply distinguished from other forms of Christian violence motivated, or at least justified, by religion. However, we have increasingly come to recognize the difficulties of drawing clear-cut boundaries between crusading and other aspects of western European culture in the Middle Ages. This chapter assesses the ways in which crusader violence was like and unlike other forms of medieval Christian violence.

Overcoming Barriers To Effective Missions, Kelvin Okey Onongha
Overcoming Barriers To Effective Missions, Kelvin Okey Onongha
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"Much today is known regarding the Great Commission of Christ to the church before his ascension for which every member is called to actively engage in missions until Christ’s Second Coming. The Greek word ethne, translated in English as “nation” is better understood as people groups (Matt 28:19). The challenge and responsibility of the Adventist Church, therefore, is to reach the diverse and numerous people groups proximal and distant, by employing all possible means and methods that God has provided for this task. The assignment undoubtedly may appear daunting, however, it still is “mission possible.” For this goal to be …
The Jacobean Peace The Irenic Policy Of James Vi And I And Its Legacy, Roger B. Manning
The Jacobean Peace The Irenic Policy Of James Vi And I And Its Legacy, Roger B. Manning
Quidditas
King James VI and I furnishes the example of an early modern monarch who pursued a policy of peace that worked to his disadvantage. This irenic policy arose more from circumstances than conviction. As king of Scotland, he had learned to distrust the violent and warlike members of the Scots nobility, and diplomacy and conciliation were the only instruments he had to deal with these ruffians. Despite aspersions upon his manhood, he led attempts to suppress their rebellion, and when he succeeded as king of England, he possessed more military experience than any English monarch since Henry VII. Those of …
High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy Of The V18 And V26 Bands Of Trans-1,3-Pentadiene, Minh Tran
High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy Of The V18 And V26 Bands Of Trans-1,3-Pentadiene, Minh Tran
Chemistry Honors Papers
A high-resolution absorbance spectrum of trans-1,3-pentadiene was obtained using a quantum cascade laser-based spectrometer. All spectra were calibrated using a methanol reference spectrum generated by SpectraPlot using the HITRAN Database. The frequency uncertainty is estimated as 0.002 cm-1. Two peaks at 976.69 and 1003.50 cm-1 were assigned to ν18 and ν26 bands respectively. Supporting calculations of the anharmonic vibrational frequencies and rotational constants were performed at the MP2/cc-pVTZ level of theory. Two specific motions were assigned to the vibrational modes ν18 and ν26. A spectrum of the ν26 band was …

The Representation Of The U.S.-Mexico Border In Television News: Textual Analysis On Bodies And Security Enforcement, David Gonzalez Hernandez
The Representation Of The U.S.-Mexico Border In Television News: Textual Analysis On Bodies And Security Enforcement, David Gonzalez Hernandez
Global Media Journal México
This article analyzes how television news has enhanced the role of representation of the United States-Mexico border in themes such as immigration, theme represented in “spectacular” ways related to “warfare”. Using textual analysis on TV reports, my aim is to show how local television network news in the United States (NBC) and Mexico (Televisa) construct the representation of the U.S./Mexico border through a particular conflicting vision to account for border enforcements and interventions on both sides and with similar visual strategies. The analysis centers on actual “visual text” or television news reports, which tries to demonstrates how assumptions guide the …

Anesaki Masaharu's Reception Of Leo Tolstoy And His Failed Attempt At Finding The Faith, Susanna Fessler Phd
Anesaki Masaharu's Reception Of Leo Tolstoy And His Failed Attempt At Finding The Faith, Susanna Fessler Phd
East Asian Studies Faculty Scholarship
Among the voices opposed to the Russo–Japanese war of 1904–5 was that of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who published an essay titled Bethink Yourselves, arguing against hostilities. The essay was translated and published in Japanese, but gained little traction among the intelligentsia in Japan. There was, however, one strong voice that supported Tolstoy’s ideas: that of the religious studies scholar Anesaki Masaharu. Anesaki’s response to Tolstoy’s essay was at once a commentary about the spiritual state of Japan at the turn of the century and also a veiled criticism of the Japanese government.

Summer Learning Loss And Summer Programming: How To Build A Cohesive Mathematics Education, Jill Osborne
Summer Learning Loss And Summer Programming: How To Build A Cohesive Mathematics Education, Jill Osborne
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students across the world are learning at an incredible rate. By the end of each academic school year, most students have amassed a large amount of knowledge. But what happens to that knowledge over the summer? Research shows that most students make no academic gains over the summer; some even regress in their content knowledge. In order to build a cohesive education across academic school years, research has shown that attending a summer academic program may help. Students that attend a summer learning program may be more successful the next academic year, which in turn builds to a greater overall …

The Thin Blue Line Of Theodicy: Flannery O’Connor, Teilhard De Chardin, And Competitions Between Good/Good And Evil/Evil, Sue Whatley
Faculty Publications
This essay explores the concept of theodicy in Flannery O’Connor’s works of fiction. O’Connor’s fiction complicates the subjects of good and evil, moving the reader through what seem to be competitions not only between good and evil, but also between actions of good and actions of evil. Characters align themselves with one force, then another, in a constantly fluctuating system, and there is no traditional pattern of Christian warfare that we would expect orthodox Catholic writing to produce. Sometimes, evil brings about the resolution of the narratives, and sometimes actions of good fail to redeem. It is only through the …

Forgotten Soldiers: Burials On The Texas Frontier And Shifting Perceptions Of Military Interment, Anthony Schienschang Ii
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This research examines the interrelation between civilian and military burials on the Texas frontier in the 1850s with further discussion about the drivers for changing military burial practices. A soldier’s life on the Texas frontier is briefly outlined along with some of the difficulties facing service members living in border forts. Special focus is placed on examining the socio-economic differences between officers and enlisted personnel, as well as the recording of deaths on the frontier. As a case study, the condition of the proposed location of the Fort Gates cemetery is explored and brief analysis of data gathered from the …
