Do It Yourself But Never Alone: Creating Social Change From Punk To Politics, Joe Mageary
Do It Yourself But Never Alone: Creating Social Change From Punk To Politics, Joe Mageary
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This presentation will use punk rock culture as a context within which to address the question of how decentralized social movements can focus the energy of concerned citizens on direct action and meaningful change-making. Goals of the presentation include: addressing how do-it-yourself (DIY) punk culture is engaging in social activism as a response to social injustice; demonstrating how punk is using the arts for social engagement; and providing an example of how punk can be a form of empowerment via radical education.
These points will be illustrated through the presentation of original qualitative research conducted by the presenter during a …

The Great War: Stories Inspired By Items From The First World War, Jerrett Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
For the one-hundred-year commemoration of “The War to End all Wars,” eleven prize-winning authors and renowned artist Jim Kay (Harry Potter: The Illustrated Edition) come together to create eleven beautiful short stories loosely tied around an object from WWI, all from the perspective of a child. The book features artwork between each story with a dark, two-page spread in the style of German Expressionism and noir art.

Fundamentals Of Strategy—The Legacy Of Henry Eccles, Scott A. Boorman
Fundamentals Of Strategy—The Legacy Of Henry Eccles, Scott A. Boorman
Naval War College Review
Each generation must educate leaders for modern high command, creating an intellectual organization for the study of strategy and an environment conducive to original, valid, and valuable strategic insights. There are few better starting points than the pioneering contributions of the U.S. Naval War College in the age of Admiral Henry E. Eccles.
The Naval Battle Of Paris, Jerry W. Jones
The Naval Battle Of Paris, Jerry W. Jones
Naval War College Review
It was only a diplomatic “battle,” but disputes among the victors of World War I over the disposition of the German navy and freedom of the seas threatened to poison relations between Britain and the United States and nearly disrupted the Paris Peace Conference. The episode speaks to the importance of cooperation for peace and security.

Gunboats For China’S New “Grand Canals”?—Probing The Intersection Of Beijing’S Naval And Oil Security Policies, Andrew Erickson, Lyle Goldstein
Naval War College Review
China’s seaborne energy imports have become as vital a lifeline as was a waterway known as the “Grand Canal” in the central part of the nation a millennium ago. But the strategic environment is very different today. Scholars of the Naval War College’s China Maritime Studies Institute examine how Chinese analysts perceive their oil-security challenges.

The Heart Of An Officer—Joint, Interagency, And International Operations And Navy Career Development, James Stavridis, Mark Hagerott
Naval War College Review
The Navy’s current system for developing Unrestricted Line officers is stretched to the breaking point. External realities and circumstances unique to the Cold War produced the existing system. Changed conditions now necessitate reform and point to a comprehensive “three track” system for line officers.
The Navy’S Changing Force Paradigm, Robert C. Rubel
The Navy’S Changing Force Paradigm, Robert C. Rubel
Naval War College Review
The U.S. Navy finds itself on the cusp of a shift in the makeup and use of its forces as fundamental as that from sail to steam or from the battleship to the aircraft carrier. The shift has, in fact, already begun. Is the Navy truly ready and willing to take the next steps?

In this excellent monograph, Michael Evans argues that Australia has a dis- tinctive way of war that focuses on con- tinental defensive strategies. These strategies, for most of its history, have been abandoned by statesmen uphold- ing Australia’s extended vital interests in a favorable regional and world order. In other words, Australian military strategists instinctively think about homeland defense, especially of the air and sea-lanes connecting Australia to the world, but their political leaders in- evitably require them to adapt their strategies to intervening around the world as a member of coalitions of like-minded liberal democracies. In the United States, …

During France’s Algerian War (1954– 62), the French journalist Henri Alleg sided with the insurgents. Arrested by French authorities in June 1957, Alleg was detained and tortured. During his confinement he managed to write and smuggle out an account of his experi- ences. Originally published in 1958, The Question was quickly banned by the French government, the first such action France had taken since the eigh- teenth century. The book nonetheless became a sensation.

China, Fragile Superpower, Toshi Yoshihara
Naval War College Review
According to Susan Shirk, China suffers terribly from the “wag the dog” syn- drome. Shirk argues rather persuasively that China is saddled with a host of in- ternal problems, ranging from wide- spread social unrest to rampant political corruption, that have sharply intensi- fied insecurities among Chinese leaders with respect to their hold on power. Such perceptions of vulnerability have in turn heightened Chinese sensitivities to slights by Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, slights that accordingly threaten to arouse potentially uncon- trollable national passions and, in the process, stimulate regime-toppling im- pulses at home.
The Tao Of Deception, John R. Arpin
The Tao Of Deception, John R. Arpin
Naval War College Review
Ralph D. Sawyer, noted scholar of Chi- nese strategic thought, has produced an enlightening study of the beginnings and the evolution of deception in Chinese political and military history. Contrary to some contemporary commentators, China has a long martial tradition. Warrior leaders and military heroes permeate both historic and contempo- rary Chinese literature, as well as mod- ern movies. Deception has long been an integral part of Chinese warfare. Draw- ing on the classic works of Chinese mil- itary thought, Sawyer demonstrates that deceptive practices and unorthodox ap- proaches are the norm rather than the exception.

In China’s Nuclear Forces Larry Wortzel has delivered an exceptional mono- graph that demands the attention of both nuclear strategists and China ex- perts. The author, a leading authority on China, Asia, national security, and military strategy, is currently serving as a commissioner on the congressionally mandated U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. He previ- ously served as the director of the Asian Studies Center and vice president for foreign policy at the Heritage Founda- tion. Mines And Underwater Ieds In U.S. Ports And Waterways, Scott C. Truver
Naval War College Review
Abroad spectrum of nontraditional and asymmetric threats challenges U.S. maritime homeland security. The smuggling of drugs, arms, and people; vesselborne improvised explosive devices, like that used by terrorists against the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in October 2002; proliferation of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-explosive weapons of mass destruc- tion and disruption; piracy and organized crime; overexploitation of marine re- sources and the destruction of marine habitats; environmental attacks and trade disruption; political and religious extremism; mass migration flows; global health threats (e.g., the spread of infectious diseases like SARS and avian flu)—all these and more pose far-reaching dangers for …
Building Maritime Security In Southeast Asia, Victor Huang
Building Maritime Security In Southeast Asia, Victor Huang
Naval War College Review
Today’s globalized economy is intricately interconnected and is heavily dependent on maritime trade in order to sustain the movement of energy, raw materials, and finished goods. The arteries of global trade include the narrow waterways of Southeast Asia, with about a third of the world’s trade and half its oil transiting through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore alone. As China and India continue their strong growth, sea trade through the straits is expected to increase correspondingly.
Chinese Evaluations Of The U.S. Navy Submarine Force, Gabriel Collins, Andrew Erickson, Lyle Goldstein, William Murray
Chinese Evaluations Of The U.S. Navy Submarine Force, Gabriel Collins, Andrew Erickson, Lyle Goldstein, William Murray
Naval War College Review
The U.S. Navy submarine force has set the standard in undersea warfare for at least half a century. America’s submarines made a vital contribution to victory in the Second World War, and they formed an elite force of truly innovative capabilities during the “cold war at sea” with the Soviet Navy. Since the end of the Cold War, the submarine force has been a leader among U.S. military warfighting communities in transforming itself to remain relevant against mili- tant Islamist extremism and other emerging threats.

“A Striking Thing”, James R. Holmes
Naval War College Review
The voyage of the U.S. Navy’s “Great White Fleet” constituted an exercise in personal leadership on the part of President Theodore Roosevelt and in inter- national leadership on the part of a United States announcing its arrival as a world power. Sixteen battleships, eight armored cruisers, six torpedo-boat de- stroyers, and associated auxiliaries steamed out of Hampton Roads in December 1907, embarking on a world cruise.
Air Force–Navy Integration In Strike Warfare, Benjamin S. Lambeth
Air Force–Navy Integration In Strike Warfare, Benjamin S. Lambeth
Naval War College Review
One of the most remarkable aspects of American joint-force combat capa- bility today is the close harmony that has steadily evolved since the 1991 Persian Gulf War in the integrated conduct of aerial strike operations by the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, along with the latter’s closely associated Marine Corps air assets. This under-recognized and little-appreciated aspect of the nation’s warfighting posture stands in marked contrast to the more familiar and con- tested relationship between the two services in the roles and resources arena, where a fundamentally different incentive structure has tended to prevail and where seemingly zero-sum battles …

A Cooperative Strategy For 21st Century Seapower, James T. Conway, Gary Roughead, Thad W. Allen
Naval War College Review
A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower” represents an historical first. Never before have the maritime forces of the United States—the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard—come together to create a unified maritime strategy. This strategy stresses an approach that integrates seapower with other elements of national power, as well as those of our friends and allies. It describes how seapower will be applied around the world to protect our way of life, as we join with other like-minded nations to protect and sustain the global, inter-connected system through which we prosper.

Naval War College Review
As most of you are well aware, for over a century the College has played a unique role in the analysis and formulation of national maritime strategy and policy as well as national grand strategy. Over the past two years, the Naval War College has found itself once again in a key position to support the leadership of our maritime forces, and of those of our global partners, in thinking through the implications of a new set of global security challenges and opportunities (see the “President’s Forum” in the Autumn 2006 issue of the Review).

The Eighteenth International Seapower Symposium, held in Newport 16–19 October 2007, provided a fitting occasion for the unveiling of a new maritime strategy for the Navy and the nation. This document, signed jointly for the first time in such a case by the Chief of Naval Operations, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and the Commandant of the Coast Guard, marks what may in fu- ture times be seen as a historic turn for America’s sea services in the direction of a new global regime of intensified maritime security cooperation.
