Little Russia: Patterns In Migration, Settlement, And The Articulation Of Ethnic Identity Among Portland's Volga Germans, Heather Ann Viets
Dissertations and Theses
The Volga Germans assert a particular ethnic identity to articulate their complex history as a multinational community even in the absence of traditional practices in language, religious piety, and communal lifestyle. Across multiple migrations and settlements from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, the Volga Germans' self-constructed group identity served historically as a tool with which to navigate uncertain politics of belonging. As subjects of imperial Russia's eighteenth-century colonization project the Volga Germans held a privileged legal status in accordance with their settlement in the Volga River region, but their subsequent loss of privileges under the reorganization and Russification of …

Living With The Promise Of Violence: The State And Indigenous People In A Militarized Frontier, Augusto B.; Gatmaytan
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Despite its significance in postwar Philippine history and its continuing relevance today, scholars have largely neglected militarization, especially as experienced by indigenous peoples. Drawing on fieldwork data from 2009 to 2010, thisarticle outlines a phenomenology of the terror experienced by an indigenous community in Agusan del Sur province at the hands of state paramilitary forces involving their own datu. Neil Whitehead’s “poetics of violence” is applied to the analysis of the community’s understanding of the state and its violence. It ends with reflections on the relevance of the community’s experience in relation to issues of continuing “Lumad killings” and the …

This article presents an examination of two artworks by the late Cuban- American artist Félix González Torres, focusing primarily on the destructive strategies and theological potential of his work. After describing the activist and counter-monumental dimensions of «Untitled» (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) (1991) and «Untitled» (Lover Boys) (1991), the author examines these two pieces, as well as the artist’s life more generally, through the lens of queer martyrdom and queer theology to postulate a hagiographic take on González Torres’ life and oeuvre. Iago The Moor Killer: The Geo-Political Context Behind Shakespeare's Othello, Elisha A. Hamlin

Shakespeare’s Othello is often viewed as an example of seventeenth century Renaissance binaries. Critics make distinctions when reading the play between hero and villain, Moors and Europeans, and between civilization and barbarity. These definitions are all complicated by Iago’s presence in the play. Iago, whose name implies he is actually a Spaniard, frames the play in a geo-political context. Because of Iago’s presence, Othello provides a picture of England’s position in the seventeenth century geo-political climate. Shakespeare is giving his English audience a particular political message.

The world is becoming increasingly more interconnected with technological advances leading to more and more globalization. It is important to see how globalization affects society, especially in the lesser developed post-conflict regions of Africa. The theories of liberalism, Marxism, and realism all offer plausible, yet strikingly different theories on the relationship between globalization and conflict. This paper conceptually examines the dominant theories of globalization and conflict, then uses open-source panel data on globalization and conflict in Africa to empirically test which theory is supported by the data, then tests if there is a correlation between the rate of globalization and …

It might appear presumptuous to quote a soldier at the outset of what is essentially a naval paper; however, if one recalls that "Generals-at-Sea" were the first admirals, one is reminded of the basic indivisibility of warfare in which light Wellington's remark remains most apposite. That Jellicoe's Jutland flagship was named the Iron Duke adds to the appeal of the quotation.

In this age, the terms "war" and "peace" do not suffice to describe the complex realities with which the statesman and the soldier must grapple. "Unengaged force warfare" is a concept that transcends this difficulty and allows us to examine the critical challenges that face our nation today. The most active frontier in unengaged force warfare at present is at sea, and it is here that the eventual outcome of unengaged force warfare may well be decided.
