The Calculated Risk In Strategy, R. Gordon Hoxie

Naval War College Review

At the highest levels the science of warfare and statesmanship have always been inseparable, So, likewise, political and military strategy cannot be dissociated, particularly in the challenges we face and will continue to face with Communism.

Disarmament - The World's Enigma, Robert O. Coulthard Aug 2018

Disarmament - The World's Enigma, Robert O. Coulthard

Naval War College Review

Like war, disarmament is not a new concept. Its history runs concurrently with that of warfare. From the earliest days it has always been customary to disarm the conquered after his defeat in order to eliminate future threats.

The Theory And Principles Of War, J. A. Huston Aug 2018

The Theory And Principles Of War, J. A. Huston

Naval War College Review

My theme this morning is stated to be "The Theory and Principles of War." I am going to try to consider just a little bit here something of the nature, the types, and the theory of war; something of the interrelationships between the use of force and policy in applying these theories; something as to how these apply to strategic considerations.

Concepts Of General And Limited War, R. E. Osgood

Naval War College Review

It is a great pleasure to be back again and to discover how much more you seem to know since I left. I am going to assume that your general level of sophistication in strategic matters ls so great that I can dispense with this terrible semantic bind of defining general and limited war and assume that no very precise definitions are necessary in order to get us off the ground.

Posttraumatic Growth: The Lived Experience Of Recurrent And Multiple Trauma Survivors Of Kenya’S Skirmishes, 2007 Post-Election Violence, And 2009 National Level Oil Tanker Fire Explosion, Jane C. Lang'at Aug 2018

Posttraumatic Growth: The Lived Experience Of Recurrent And Multiple Trauma Survivors Of Kenya’S Skirmishes, 2007 Post-Election Violence, And 2009 National Level Oil Tanker Fire Explosion, Jane C. Lang'at

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current research has associated the benefits of posttraumatic growth (PTG) with high levels of stress and trauma that challenge the victim’s assumptive world. The literature reveals that extensive research on PTG has been done on the American, European, and Asian continents but not on the African continent. Yet, how trauma survivors make meaning out of their lived experiences may not be the same globally. This universal phenomenon may also have varied interpretations based on the frequency, intensity, and scope of the traumata, along with the survivors’ socio-economic status (SES) and other benefits and risk factors. In addition, anticipation for high-risk …

Resource Conflict Literature: Reading Indigenous Struggles, Alok Amatya Aug 2018

Resource Conflict Literature: Reading Indigenous Struggles, Alok Amatya

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation identifies “resource conflict literature” as a genre of global literature and media that addresses neo-colonial conflicts over oil, minerals and other natural resources. I focus on twentieth and twenty-first century texts set in “resource frontiers,” i.e. places where native peoples struggle against the grab of mineral-rich lands and other resources by large corporations. The chapters of my dissertation study native struggles in three unique areas of the world, namely, east-central India (South Asia), the Niger Delta of Nigeria (Western Africa), and northern Iraq (the Arabian Peninsula). I identity a literary device – the “itinerary of conflict” – to …

A Comparison Of Benthic Habitats And Faunas Between The Miami Terrace (Proposed Calypso Pipeline Site) And The Pourtales Terrace (Coral Habitat Of Particular Concern), Laura Dell Aug 2018

A Comparison Of Benthic Habitats And Faunas Between The Miami Terrace (Proposed Calypso Pipeline Site) And The Pourtales Terrace (Coral Habitat Of Particular Concern), Laura Dell

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Quantitative photographs of benthic communities at two northern Miami Terrace sites, originally investigated as part of an environmental impact survey in advance of the proposed Calypso pipeline, and two Pourtalès Terrace sites, investigated as part of an exploration of deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems (DSCEs) within the Pourtalès Terrace Deep-water Coral Habitat Area of Particular Concern (CHAPC), were reanalyzed and compared for similarities and differences. Both terraces are part of an elongated lithified platform that parallels the southeastern Florida coast at depths averaging between 250 and 450 m. Although both sites have similar geological origins and lie under the Florida …

Determination Of Age-Related Differences In Activation And Detoxication Of Organophosphates In Rat And Human Tissues, Edward Caldwell Meek Aug 2018

Determination Of Age-Related Differences In Activation And Detoxication Of Organophosphates In Rat And Human Tissues, Edward Caldwell Meek

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanism of toxic action for organophosphates (OPs), originally developed as insecticides, is the persistent inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) resulting in accumulation of acetylcholine and subsequent hyperstimulation of the nervous system. Many OPs require bioactivation via cytochromes P450 to oxon metabolites which are anticholinesterases. Organophosphates display a wide range of acute toxicities. Differences in the OPs’ chemistries results in differences in the compounds' metabolism and toxicity. Acute toxicities of OPs appear to be principally dependent on compound specific efficiencies of detoxication, and less dependent upon efficiencies of bioactivation and sensitivity of AChE. Esterases, such as carboxylesterase (CaE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), …

A Network-Based Method For The Analysis Of Use And Function In Stone Tool Kits: Implications For Late Prehistoric Settlement Patterning In Northeast Mississippi, Jason Nathaniel Ervin Aug 2018

A Network-Based Method For The Analysis Of Use And Function In Stone Tool Kits: Implications For Late Prehistoric Settlement Patterning In Northeast Mississippi, Jason Nathaniel Ervin

Theses and Dissertations

A network-based method is developed for analyzing use in stone tool assemblages, where 'use' denotes the tasks for which chipped edges are suitable. Modeling chipped edges as nodes, use-wear and retouch as edge traversals, use-life trajectories of chipped edges as inter-connecting paths, and `tools' as subnetworks over which design tolerances are maintained on edge morphology, the method is an attempt to improve on existing models, allowing for complex, continuous change and multiple uses throughout a chipped edge's use-life. Avoiding analogy-based categories, the method is designed to highlight rather than obscure the possibilities for use and multi-use. Potential for integration into …

Writing A Moral Code: Algorithms For Ethical Reasoning By Humans And Machines, James F. Mcgrath, Ankur Gupta Aug 2018

Writing A Moral Code: Algorithms For Ethical Reasoning By Humans And Machines, James F. Mcgrath, Ankur Gupta

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The moral and ethical challenges of living in community pertain not only to the intersection of human beings one with another, but also our interactions with our machine creations. This article explores the philosophical and theological framework for reasoning and decision-making through the lens of science fiction, religion, and artificial intelligence (both real and imagined). In comparing the programming of autonomous machines with human ethical deliberation, we discover that both depend on a concrete ordering of priorities derived from a clearly defined value system.

Message Scheduling Optimization With Energy Constraints And Uncertain Demands In A Store-And-Forward Nanosatellite Communications Architecture, Michelle Song, Cherry Wakayama, Zelda Zabinsky Aug 2018

Message Scheduling Optimization With Energy Constraints And Uncertain Demands In A Store-And-Forward Nanosatellite Communications Architecture, Michelle Song, Cherry Wakayama, Zelda Zabinsky

Small Satellite Conference

We formulate message scheduling optimization models for a communications network architecture containing nanosatellites, gateways, and remote users. In this architecture, messages are to be scheduled at gateways and nanosatellites during certain contact time windows to be delivered to their associated remote users using a store-and-forward approach. Two deterministic models and one probabilistic model are presented which derive message paths and schedules while addressing short contact windows, limited energy capacity and uncertainty in link quality. In the probabilistic model, uncertainty in link quality is incorporated by representing the demand to each user with a random variable and formulating it as a …

Sigint: The Mission Cubesats Are Made For, Marcin Brodecki, Zeger De Groot Aug 2018

Sigint: The Mission Cubesats Are Made For, Marcin Brodecki, Zeger De Groot

Small Satellite Conference

The collection of radio frequency (RF) signals by means of interferometry is an area that shows great promise for small satellite applications and is a shared interest of business and the scientific and military community. SIGnals INTelligence or SIGINT is one of the oldest missions for satellites, especially for its subfield, ELectronic INTelligence (ELINT), the analysis and localization of RF-signals. Unfortunately, the accuracy that customers demand from such systems in order to merit their costs is often incongruent with detection techniques that rely on single nanosatellites (such as Angle of Arrival methods). Accuracy is strongly related to aperture size; rigid …

Improving Mission Success Of Cubesats, Catherine Venturini, Barbara Braun, David Hinkley, Greg Berg Aug 2018

Improving Mission Success Of Cubesats, Catherine Venturini, Barbara Braun, David Hinkley, Greg Berg

Small Satellite Conference

As a concept, the CubeSat class of satellites is over 15 years old. The first CubeSat satellites were launched in 2003 and a few more in 2006. In recent years, CubeSats have proliferated at an astonishing rate. What started as a largely academic exercise has taken on much greater significance, with commercial entities gearing up to produce vast constellations of the small but capable spacecraft. Amidst all the hype one fact tends to get overlooked: CubeSats do not have a great record of mission success. This presentation provides simple, actionable recommendations that should improve the likelihood of mission success for …

Three Dimensional Passive Localization For Single Path Arrival With Unknown Starting Conditions, Britt Aguda Aug 2018

Three Dimensional Passive Localization For Single Path Arrival With Unknown Starting Conditions, Britt Aguda

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Introduced in this paper is the time difference of arrival (TDoA) conic approximation method (TCAM), a technique for passive localization in three dimensions with unknown starting conditions. The TDoA of a mutually detected signal across pairs of detectors is used to calculate the relative angle between the signal source and the center point of the separation between the detectors in the pair. The relative angle is calculated from the TDoA using a mathematical model called the TDoA approximation of the zenith angle (TAZA). The TAZA angle defines the opening angle of a conic region of probability that contains the signal …

Hydrodynamics Of An Anguilliform Swimming Motion Using Morison’S Equation, Naga Sasi Devarakonda Aug 2018

Hydrodynamics Of An Anguilliform Swimming Motion Using Morison’S Equation, Naga Sasi Devarakonda

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the hydrodynamic performance of anguilliform swimming motion is computed using Morison’s equation. This method was shown to predict the servo motor torques well. The anguilliform swimming motion is sinusoidal with increasing amplitude from head to tail. A “wakeless” swimming motion proposed by Vorus and Taravella (2011) with zero net circulation is considered.

This method is compared to the existing slender body theory and is validated with reference to the experimental results of NEELBOT-1.1 (Potts, 2015). The results for the study indicates that self-propulsion speed of the motion is independent of the oscillating tail amplitude at a constant …

Thietmar Of Merseburg's Views On Clerical Warfare, Benjamin Joseph Wand Aug 2018

Thietmar Of Merseburg's Views On Clerical Warfare, Benjamin Joseph Wand

Dissertations and Theses

The tenth-century German bishop was more than just a spiritual leader, he was also a territorial lord with secular power. These bishops also lived in an environment where violence was sometimes a way of life. His culture contained a social dynamic that saw violence as a tool for defending and maintaining honor and as a mechanism for dispute resolution. Therefore, some bishops behaved violently, either to defend their diocese from threats or to serve their own political intrigues. In some instances bishops were said to be more skilled in warfare than secular lords. However, while some clergy participated in warfare …

Firewalls, especially at large organizations, process high velocity internet traffic and flag suspicious events and activities. Flagged events can be benign, such as misconfigured routers, or malignant, such as a hacker trying to gain access to a specific computer. Confounding this is that flagged events are not always obvious in their danger and the high velocity nature of the problem. Current work in firewall log analysis is manual intensive and involves manpower hours to find events to investigate. This is predominantly achieved by manually sorting firewall and intrusion detection/prevention system log data. This work aims to improve the ability of …

RSat, developed by the Naval Academy, is an existing set …

Breakpoint Analysis Of Modis Vegetarian Cover Change In Southern California Deserts, Rebecca Baiman Aug 2018

Breakpoint Analysis Of Modis Vegetarian Cover Change In Southern California Deserts, Rebecca Baiman

STAR Program Research Presentations

This study applies time series breakpoint analysis to look at Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data of southern California. Past studies have looked at this desert land using Landsat data in order to analyze any changes the environment has gone through due to renewable energy development or other factors. This study develops a method for utilizing structural change models to study the DRECP land area. Focusing on breakpoints, this study found that most positive breakpoints represented years with high rainfall. Additionally, sandy washes with little vegetation did not yield any breakpoint between 2000 and 2018. This study can be used …

The Longevity Of American Terrorists: Factors Affecting Sustainability, Brent L. Smith, Jeff Gruenewald, Katie Ratcliff, Paxton Roberts, Madeline Brice

Research Projects

This project was an outgrowth of two previous NIJ projects being conducted under NIJ’s Research and Evaluation on Domestic Radicalization to Violent Extremism program area. The first of these projects, which ended in 2015, focused upon testing one of the most prominent theoretical models of extremist radicalization -- identity and framing theory. One of the findings from examination of this theoretical model is consistent with the notion that “people want to be associated with a winner.” Recruitment and commitment, crucial to the lifespan of any terrorist movement, improve when the movement has been able to commit successful terrorist incidents (Freilich, …
